We came on Sunday for a late lunch and the staff were very kind and helpful. We got the nachos which were absolutely amazing and had the perfect amount and ratio of beef to cheese. The best quick table service Mexican I've had in years. The classic fajitas were Fabulously delicious! I thoroughly enjoyed the dish I didn't even touch the rice and beans I was enjoying my meat and veggies so much. I was apprehensive because they said tomatoes were grilled in with the bell pepper and onions but went with it anyway. I now want grilled tomatoes in all my fajitas. It just added a pop and combine that with a slight squeeze of lemon wedge that accompanied my sizzling platter was a wow factor. Meat and veggies were well seasoned I can't even recall the last time I had well seasoned fajitas that the meat actually looked grilled. Speaking of meat I love the smaller strips makes for biting into the fajita so much easier and you aren't dragging an entire piece of steak of your prepared fajitas. Steak as I said had actually been grilled and adding a nice char along with the sizzle. What was even better the classic fajitas were on special on Mondays so I got them for 15$ and I appreciate and value the amount I received. I'm an east coaster and what has become the east coast norm for the average sit down restaurant is over 20$ thick tough non seasoned Grey meat and very little of it mainly bell peppers and onions and when I say mainly like 80/20. I love fajitas so I am excited to have found this deal so close to my new Iowa home. I can't wait to try the tamales and chilli rellenos my always go to Mexican favorites. My only complaint is I would greatly prefer and love whole beans be it pinto or black to be offered in place of refried. Restaurant was clean staff was very friendly and efficient. read more

I was looking for a business and I came across this restaurant. I walked in and I was greeted very warmly. I sat at the bar and the bartender h Got my drink gave me a few minutes to look over while I munched on the chips and salsa. I ordered the soup and it was really good. (I forgot to take a picture) The soup was full of chicken, rice and plenty of veggies. I highly recommend it. I know where I will be once winter comes along because I will be eating chicken soup there. Then I received the enchiladas supreme. They were really and full of flavor. What a great place!! My wife and I love this place. The food is fantastic!! I always get something a little bit different, the chicken soup!! It's a huge bowl filled to the brim with chicken, rice, and pico de gallo, swimming in a rich chicken stock. Man is it good!! Ask for limes and diced jalepeños on the side for an authentic cold stopper. My wife gets various things, but they are all great with huge portions. She eats on it for a couple days after our visit. The chorizo queso dip is excellent with your chips and salsa. The service is friendly and quick. I speak a tiny bit of Spanish so that makes it better. Try it!! Amigo means friend, and they love hearing it. They are all great people and we've never been treated poorly. The restaurant is good looking and clean. If there was a 3.5 rating, I'd be going with that - good service, decent chips and salsa, OK food, very good prices, and good sized serving sizes. My wife ordered the veggie fajitas, and that was a good choice - a nice mix of veggies and a good-sized serving, and served hot and flavorful. I got 2 beef tostadas - they were piled high with mostly ground beef and lettuce, but were pretty good. The tortillas could have been a bit crispier and the tomatoes were what we've unfortunately come to expect in the Midwest - slightly red and not much flavor. However, there was a bit of queso around the tortillas, which was very tasty, and I had more than I needed with just the two tostadas. Chips and salsa were good, and we even got a second bowl of salsa to add to our food. My wife got a Tecate, which was as you'd expect, and I got a lime margarita which was OK, but nothing spectacular. Our server was attentive - checking in regularly. Food came out fast, and is very reasonably priced, especially for the serving sizes. read more

Your run of the mill Mexican food. There's nothing too special about this place, but nothing for me to complain about either. When I eat here it just feels like 80% of the rest of the Mexican restaurants around the dsm area and I say that as not a bad thing. I've had good food and service here. When the restaurant has a lunch special called the "Speedy Gonzalez", they have set an expectation. And that expectation was met and exceeded. Lunch at Monterrey is F.A.S.T. with a capital F. Less than 5 minutes after placing our orders, the food was delivered to the table. It was hot, it was tasty and it was definitely Mexican food. No complaints. Chips and salsa were excellent. This location just does not impress me. My husband likes it fine though (but I write the reviews :)). They forgot my margarita and then made it seem like they didn't by saying "Oh it's coming. What flavor was is again?" If you really had it coming, you shouldn't have to ask what it was! This was after we had our food too. Then when it did come, it was disgusting! Tasted like a strawberry lip balm. I couldn't finish it because it was so gross. I never thought I'd say this but my dish (Enchiladas Guadalajara) had way too much cheese sauce on it. I mean my enchiladas weren't swimming, they were drowning. I felt sick to my stomach eating them. Even without the cheese sauce, they weren't impressive. Lots of changes in the past few months, and it feels like things are slipping. The new chips are not very good. We hoped they were a temporary thing or due to a supplier issue, but they've never gone back... Menus are totally different as of the beginning of March. Perhaps this is just a better way to pass through rising food costs, but it was noticeably different in terms of the layout. For less than 8 bucks, I got a very tasty dish that came in a huge portion. I loved the queso they smother on top. My dining partner got Hawaiian fajitas and he liked the sweetness the pineapple added to the dish. The shrimp in the dish gets a little over cooked because it sits on the skillet, which is really the only downside I found. Portions are very very large - you will have leftovers.
