If I walk into your eatin' establishment and you're offering me free beans(with bacon) along with free chips and salsa you have already earned yourself two stars before my order has been placed. On to the food. El Rey provides your full range of Mexican food with amazingly good meat. I have only sampled the carne asada but I will assume all others are equally delicious. What sets them apart is the taco bar. Not the finest taco bar I have seen, that can be found at Tacos Gavilan, but here you can select any salsa/topping and have the taco master add it to your order as he prepares it. This is especially awesome if you are ordering a burrito, which is in my opinion their specialty. This place used to be very good years ago, however the last time I had it their meat was lacking flavor and extremely dry. You can order cooked meat by the pound here and they will give you tortillas , salsas etc. The last time we got it, The salsas were not good and the tortillas were hard. The food tasted great,i got a torta which was huge and easily can be shared or saved for seconds later. My wife got a taco plate which she thoroughly enjoyed as well. They also have a large selection of unlimited salsa's, toppings, and beans. In a town where taco stands come a dime a dozen, it is really rare to find a place that could inspire one, such as my self, to write a review. Now, in assessing the quality of a taco or even a taco shop, it is important to look at more than just the quality of the asada, but to also look at the quality of service and the attributes that makes this place notable. First, I bring attention to the carne asada tacos: delicious, meaty and served on a soft fresh sheet of goodness. In the mist of my carnal gluttony, my eyes met what appeared to be a small child wrapped in foil. A look closer and it is none other than a Cubana torta. Layers of asada, carnitas, el pastor, meat and meat. The tortas really are their claim to fame, daring to to eat 2 for a free meal. Like I said earlier, a taco is a taco is a taco. Unless the taco stand serves up a nice salsa bar, which is the case here. Salsas are fresh. Stocks the usual and predictable: limes, radishes, carrots, jalapenos, but wait! Frijoles de olla and caramelized onions with tortilla chips. Just to illustrate the value here, I got a taco (which are larger than most places) with all the salsa bar awesomeness for 2 bucks. Which puts them a head and shoulders above the rest. Just to address the comments made by my fellow yelpers, the girl behind the counter did speak English and the cook said "good morning." I found that the meat was marinaded well and that it was perfectly cooked. Sorry that their experience wasn't good, but it shouldn't deter you from one of this earth's greatest pleasures. I eat here every time I'm in town. The only downside is the parking situation, small parking lot and small spaces. Well I live around the Corner from El Rey and it's just a typical Mexican Fast Food Joint! It is actually pretty disgusting too - you never know when the food you are getting is fresh, at time when I have visited El Rey, (when I'm lazy to make something at home) when their at best the food is just pretty much just OK but there has been times that I been there and Chicken looks like it's been sitting there for days as some of the Salsas just look old! The all you can eat beans taste plain. The tacos off Pastor are also plain! The Guacamole Salsa comes from gallon Avocado processed liquid and they doctor it up with their own cilantro and onions also the grilled Onions have like some kind of Lime taste to them which kills the natural sweetness on the Grilled Onions! The last time I went there Restaurant had a very Humid Thick disgusting smell and it grossed me out - I haven't been there since. We were craving some Mexican food and we stumbled upon El Rey through Yelp. We decided to give it a try and it was amazing!! The service was fast and they had a great salsa bar with a variety of salsa and free beans. I had the carne asada, al pastor and carnitas tacos and they were all delicious! My favorite would have to be the Al Pastor. The meat was tender, juicy and flavorful. I will definitely be back for some tacos and maybe even an al pastor burrito. read more

(NO PROB !) the women running the counter just took charge and set me up FAT !! with 3- large trays of Carne Asada, Chicken, and Pastor, they Also included ALL THE EXTRAS!!, Heaps of WARM soft Tortillas, Even Heaps of Hard shell tortilla too ! pints of all their excellent salsas and even included a tray of grilled red chiles & onions too! it came with loads of beans & rice and chips (all included at no charge with the big order. When I went there to pick it all up , The staff were all over it ! they had it perfectly packaged and bagged, it was fresh & hot , and they even helped me put in all in my vehicle (talk about good service!!) the price was a HUGE VALUE ! If they had an option to grade them ZERO stars I would. I stopped in for a torta this morning around 9 am. Asked for a simple Carne Asada Torta. I got my Torta and it was pretty big which justified for the overpriced Torta at $10.76 including taxes. I took it to go. Well when I was ready to eat it, just realized they had given me a huge Torta on a huge bread, not much filling with meat or anything else but BREAD. The bread was like 2 or 3 day old HARD bread. This is the most authentic Mexican food we have had in the greater LA area. My husband always orders chicken taquitos but I always find them, thin, over fried with a piece of shriveled piece of meat in them. NOT this place, they were the size of big fat cigar, and the meat inside was moist and tender. The condiment bar had everything you could ever want on your plate, including free frijoles charros (delicious). The salsa madre has a great flavor but beware it is very very spicy. The tacos were very large and delicious (that includes the "taco lites"). We can't wait to go back. We came here at my uncle's insistence, as this is one his favorite lunch places. Huge servings, about $10 per plate, but it did not disappoint. We arrived immediately in front of the lunch crowd- apparently, this is the place to go for lunch! It was busy the entire 45 minutes we spent there for lunch. We all ordered Carne asana taco combo plates, with the beans and rice (notmally, I ignore the sides because they're too greasy, but these were pretty good). The roomie and I were hankering for some good, authentic Mexican food, so we dug through the stack of coupons on the kitchen table and found one for El Rey! We've driven by this little restaurant a few times, and always noticed how full the parking lot seemed. It is a small lot, so that may add to the illusion, but still. Inside it was pretty full too, which is impressive for after 9pm on a Monday night. And the sign on the door says they're open til 1am on Saturdays! Yessss! The menu is large and a bit intimidating. They have the usual stuff, like tacos and burritos, but they also have an extensive juice bar, al pastor and humongous cubanas tortas. I ordered the torta milanesa, and the roomie ordered tacos al pastor. And, yay coupons! The staff was really friendly, and the girl at the register answered my questions with a smile. We sat to wait for our to go order and noticed a salsa bar of epic proportions. They had six or so salsas, along with onions, cilantro, pickled red onions, nopal salad, lemons, limes, radishes, cucumbers, and jalapenos. It was almost ridiculous. Also, they have FREE BEANS! There's a little sign on the pot of beans that says (in Spanish) something to the effect of: "Welcome friends, have some beans to remind you of your homeland!" Super cute. So we stocked up on little cups of everything, got our drinks (the Jamaica is great by the way) and waited. It didn't take long at all, and when the smiling cook handed me my torta, he also heaped up some grilled onions, chile peppers, and a bag of chips! Gah, I just love free stuff. Especially if it's food. Everything was amazing. The tortillas were freshly made, the al pastor had an amazing flavor, the bread on the huge torta was soft and warm, the milanesa was crispy and delicious. All the little salsas were great, too. Average tacos. Carne Asada is better than the carnitas. They've got Cabeza if you like as well. My prob is that if you have cabeza why not Lengua as well. Your going for the same taste bud group or demograhic. Carnitas was not the maranaded type but was more of the roasted Pork Carnitas. Well done and slightly dry. Carne Asada had better flavor although. But again it wasoverly cooked and had a hint of being grilled. Salsa is a little suspect. One of them seemed spoiled. Sometimes u wonder about Yelpers and the ratings they give when reviewing. To each his own I guess, BUT I was somewhat disappointed coming here because I was super super excited to come here based on the solid 4-star average given to this establishment. Average is the best way to describe the food here. While it wasn't totally awful, it definitely wasn't that great. My dad ordered tacos de cabeza and of chorizo and he ate them but he said they lacked flavor, which is the same thing that happened to us with the ginormous tortas we ordered. My daughter and I both ordered the "Lambada" which was chorizo and egg with slices of lomo (pork meat). We should have only gotten one, one because they were so damn big, and two, because my daughter didn't like it. First off, IMHO, I believe that the bread being so big overpowered the meat in the torta as did the guacamole, which would have been better off being slices of avocado instead. Same thing happen ended with my wife's torta, which had lomo, ham and beef Milanesa. Sadly, the tortas didn't come together until salsa was added. But if you are into big portions, this is the place for you! Highlights of our visit were the FREE frijoles charros, which were very delicious and well seasoned( I coulda drank a gallon of the bean juice and been happy), the freshly fried tortilla chips they gave us, the salsa bar that included ensalada de nopal, and the fact that they had a big ol' bottle of hand sanitizer upon entering the restaurant. Oh yeah, if you're a futbol fan, they are Club America fans all the way and have the whole place decked out in Aguila memorabilia. This is a tiny shop, parking is awkward, if you can fit in, otherwise you park next door at 7-11. Everything I've had here has been pretty great. I personally love the self serve condiment bar with the sauces and I really love the chips and onions that you get with every order. I love their carnitas and the al pastor. The price may be a bit higher than your standard 99cent taco bar, but the portions are big and the food is great. So know that before you order your regular 5-6 tacos. I have yet to experience an establishment that can top El Rey for Mexican food. Los Michiocanos Inc. put their freshness on display with the freshest tortillas I have ever had. My favorite homemade salsa, which is second to none. They also have a large cauldron of complimentary beans which are delicious, Prices are very fair for the quality of food. The biggest P.I.T.A. is the parking. The lot only allows for like 5 cars to park in front of the business otherwise you are parking across the street. El Rey is awesome. We went to That 80's Bar and got hungry around midnight. We yelped for food and found this place open until 1. I'm not eating meat right now, so I ordered cheese enchiladas which came with rice, beans, and chips. It was delicious. I don't normally like eating enchiladas from restaurants because they don't compare to my moms, but these were amazing. The chips have this hint of lemon on them, so good. Impressive salsa bar. Lots of sauces, pico de gallo, several other toppings, free beans, AND the hot sauce cups are bigger than normal. Every type of salsa is excellent: RED SAUCE - Has the complexity of flavor that only comes with freshness. Moderately spicy--not scorching and not weak. Slightly smoky. GREEN SAUCE - Has the refreshing quality you hope for in a green sauce but still a good kick of spice. Flavorful, moderately chunky, and very fresh. CHIPOTLE - Extremely smoky. Complex flavors. A great alternate flavor to add to a bite every now and then or to mix into another sauce to add more smokiness IMO. AVOCADO SAUCE - Cooling, refreshing avocado. Not much spice. But like all these sauces, it's definitely made in-house and fresh. HABANERO (?) - Not sure if this is habanero or not, but it's the orange/yellow sauce. This was my fav. A little more spicy than the others. Not smoky like the red or chipotle. If you were going to pick a sauce to dip your chips in, this would be the one. read more
