Safe haven from a desert breakdown. Had to be towed into town and Marie and husband Jerry showed unbelievable kindness. Jerry even helped me fix my car. The motel itself is clean and a decent place to stay, but the people who run the place make all the difference in the world. A five star hotel is not always about amenities, it's about service. Marie, the manager, is one of the kindest people you could ever meet! My 18 year old son had run away from home and found himself (thankfully!) at the El Rey Motel. Marie knew something was suspicious and confronted him. She made him call me and I drove the 4 hours to pick him up. I called several times on our way to make sure he was still there and not once did she act as if I was putting her out at all, she only wanted to help. When we arrived I was an emotional wreck, she insisted that I lie down and try to rest before heading back home and even gave my husband and me a free room, some bottled water and a couple of sodas. I am forever in your debt Marie, really. As far as the rooms go, they are clean, cleaner than some more expensive places I have stayed at. The AC ran perfectly and I was able to rest before driving back home to San Diego. Thank you! read more

This place is hard to rate, because at that price point it should really be 5 stars, but it's not what I would call a 5 star hotel. The rooms are immaculately clean, except it is Nevada, so they smell like cigarette smoke. Theresa who was working the front desk, and cleaning the rooms, and always available is one of the nicest people I have ever met. The sheets and towels are scratchy, but somehow comfortable because they are so clean, and given with such a kind hand. If you are looking for a very inexpensive place to stay this is it. read more

Yes, 4 STARS! At $44 a night you can't beat it! My friends and I stay here fairly often while enjoying Lake Mohave and Cottonwood Cove. I actually prefer it to the "Cottonwood Cove" Resort - too many kids and you have to plan your trip months in advance due to vacancy limitations. Great: Clean bathrooms and hot showers with excellent water pressure. Extra cot in the closet in case of more people and CHEAP CHEAP CHEAP!!! Meh: Beds are not the most comfortable and the decor looks like it's right out of a 1970's pawn shop but it's a completely "No Frills" situation. Pillows are pretty flat so I always bring my own. Last time we arrived at 2:00am. I called Marie, the owner and told her beforehand when to expect us. You could tell that we had woken her up but she was still very appreciative of the "heads up" and accommodating. read more

Cheap, clean, cheery. Only $44/night (and that includes tax)! During an experimental bike tour this past weekend, we chose this establishment as our destination. After 101 miles on a bicycle, almost any place would be a welcome sight, but in the quickly darkening night sky, the bright lights spelling out "El Rey" acted like a lighthouse. Come here! The front desk lady was very friendly and advised us to take a long, hot shower, which we did. (Shower pressure was quite good.) Our room was decked out in 70s finery and the pink bathroom was charming in its own way. The bed could use a new mattress (springs were most definitely discernible). Overall, even though there aren't many lodging choices from which to choose in Searchlight, NV, this place is like a hole-in-the-wall diner: look beneath the surface for the value underneath. read more

For less than 45 bucks you can get a descent room here. If you just want a cheaper room before Laughlin or Las Vegas or Cottonwood Cove, make a stop here. Beds sheets have that smell of "just out of the dryer" so it feels clean, mattresses are ok. TV and cable box's work and old lamps and weathered dressers remind you of the good old days or an episode of "That 70's Show". It is not the Hilton but no rooms at any Hilton I know of go for 44 bucks. Showers are great and a room heater or AC does the job just fine. If you are one that just can't stand saving money you can always go down and bet the difference at the Search Light Nugget Casino, a great place with 2 dollar Black Jack and lots of machines. I was there on New Year's Eve, had a blast and a round of three mixed drinks was 8.50 and a cup of Joe to sober you up is 10 cents. You can even drop the room key off at the Casino. Oh, if you do want wi-fi they have it at the Casino and at the Mcdonald's both less than 200 yards walk. Been coming here for years and will continue to do so. read more

I wanted to like this place. I usually love motels like this, and--in that same vein--Yelp has rarely steered me wrong when trying to evaluate these sorts of high-kitsch, non-chain, throw-back motels, which are my preferred lodging style when I'm on the road. Indeed, I'm a low-amenity tenant, especially if the price corresponds to the relative levels of service and comfort. Ultimately, I'm primarily looking to sleep soundly and cleanly, without catching bedbugs; to shower the next morning; and to move on relatively early--though a little charm and some fringe comforts never go unappreciated. Beyond that, it's always nice not to see much in the way of non-bedbug insects, even if I'm fully able to tolerate a stray spider, or what have you. I can say, at least, that I did not contract bedbugs at the El Rey. However--echoing what one reviewer noted on TripAdvisor (a review which I only saw after I'd paid for and settled into the room)--there were some lovely insect casings under the sheets of *one* of the two beds in my room's modest accommodations. I'm savvy enough to know, at least, that they were not bedbugs--but it was still enough to make my skin reflexively itch. Likewise, the carpets were not just dingy: they were dirty, torn, and peeling away from the floor at nearly every corner. Some small solace was found in the fact that, at the very least, the second bed (on which I ultimately slept) had a mattress-case--essentially a glorified plastic bag, but whatever--enveloping the mattress, under its sheets, which provided a shaky semblance of protection from nocturnal creepers. And--again at the very least--the bathroom was mostly clean (a touch of mildew in the shower's grout, but otherwise spotless), making my morning ablutions entirely satisfactory----though I'd be remiss if I did not mention the nice, baseball-sized hole broken into the windowpane, which permitted a warm draft off the high-desert plain (and, presumably, would have presented an opportunity for voyeurs, were this dusty "camp that didn't fail" large enough to boast any). The more-than-minimum star-rating is thanks to the cleanliness of the water-closet, the friendliness of the front-desk staff(/owner?), and the admittedly inexpensive price ($44 a night) in a slice of Nevada where options are few and far between. That being said, I sadly can't say that I'd *recommend* El Rey based on my one night there--but there *is* a historical marker in the parking-lot that is not to be missed. read more

I gave this 5 stars even though it is a bit old and shows its age. But the 5 stars is based on a motel room for $44 a night. That's tax and fees included! The bed was comfortable and I slept sound. The shower pressure is excellent although the shower head is a bit low for my 6 foot self. The staff is great and very helpful and would go beyond the call of duty if needed. Thank you so much for helping to make our celebration of life for our mom and dad wonderful. By the way, my family and friends occupied 5 of these rooms for this event. read more

As previously mentioned, it's not a five store resort, but it does get five stars for how well everything worked out and the cleanliness level. Stayed here for basically, a gathering of family for remembrance. Searchlight is the name of the town near "the river". My mom and step-dad spent many weekends in the 1970s and 80s there at the river, and they had requested that when the day came, they wanted to be memorialized there. He died first, mom died in 2009... In 2016, all the step-siblings and us got together at the river and it was just a fantastic weekend. As for the motel, we all made reservations there, and for the price we paid, they may as well have given it away. For once, we were the loud ones staying at a motel, we stayed up late and "remembered" the great times-out in the halls of this motel. I don't encourage anyone to try this for themselves, but I give this motel high ratings in respect to value. A place to sleep and bathe, and the most comfortable set of box springs I can ever remember sleeping on. They don't offer any fancy breakfast or room service, but all that is within a short walk in either direction, if you must. The staff were real people, humble and down right nice...the way folks use to be! The Motel was just the same! read more

9/19/2018 I read a similar review to the one I am about to write. My wife had stayed there with her late husband a number of times in the 2000's, and she told me they had beautiful rooms, with fire places, comfortable chairs, opera music was played throughout the grounds and breakfast was served daily by a wait staff. It was the first time in Santa Fe for me, so we were both excited to stay there while we visited Santa Fe. We checked in and the room we were given was very small and the queen size bed was right underneath the large window, length wise, not the headboard against the window but length wise, totally unacceptable. We were told we could switch rooms, so we checked the rooms toward the back, and found one and got the key, and began moving in. We were halfway moved in when I began to notice, there were no pictures/art on the walls (blank), no coffee maker, no clock, there was only one chair and it was a desk chair on wheels, no refrigerater. I attempted to use the phone, but it was not working. When I reported the phone problem, I was told they would make out a work order on it, and then was told the next morning, they did not have any phone repair folks and it would not be repaired during our stay, because the phone repair company was not available. Breakfast was not available, except for a coffee pot in the lobby.Since we had driven from Atlanta, we were in no mood to switch to a third room, and since we had our cell phones we could do without a room phone, but really!!!! There were no curtains on the single large window, only a large shade, which means if you pulled it up, you were exposed to the world. It would have been nice to have just curtains to filer the sun light from the beautiful Santa Fe mornings, instead of cutting it off completely with an ugly brown shade. We needed to wash some things in the laundry room the following day. Washing machine, no problem, but the dryer was not working due to over use for the day, and was told they needed to order a part. But was told there was another laundry room on the other side of the hotel. So later that evening as we were trying to locate the "other laundry room" I inquired in the office and was told they only had one laundry room. As I was walking out of the office, another hotel employee had escorted my wife to "the other laundry room" which was on the other side of the motel grounds. When I told the employee what the office told me he explained "oh, she is new".!! I also learned ownership had changed hand (twice) and they were renovating. And was it true pool memberships were available to the local populace? The maintenance men should be wearing some sort of uniform to identify themselves, I noticed one individual riding around on a golf cart, who looked like he may have just escaped from a chain gang. Lastly although we did not spend a great deal of time in the room, it would have been nice to have watched the news, but the tv picture was distorted and the people appeared short and fat. The staff were very friendly. I had made a list of issues, such as this review and took them to the office the morning of checkout and ask they be given to the manager. When I checked out there was even a note from the manager addressing any of my issues. I will mention that thee staff were very nice, even apologetic. My wife and I can make the best out of anything, so we didn't let motel issues keep us from having a great time in Santa Fe read more
