I know this restaurant if famous for their french cuisine, which we'll try next time, but so far breakfast and pastries were just ok. Nothing spectacular, and nothing wrong. This restaurant has been here since 1947. Not a fly-by-night place, obviously. Susan's grand-parents hung out here in the early '60s when they sailed down from NHYC. The menu is massive. Something for everybody. If you find that you are in Ensenada, this is a MUST. Susan and I started with the Queso Fundido - melted cheese - next was a table-sIde Caesar's Salad. Now, I know how to make a traditional Caesars, and this rendition was exactly to my specifications. My entree was wild-caught Abalone. This dish in LA (few restaurants even have it) would have cost of $90 at least. Here, I paid $13.00 and I only ate half of it, since there was so much. I had breakfast on the sidewalk patio so can't comment on the inside or dinner menu but breakfast was solid. Seems to be about the nicest place to eat in the immediate area - not necessarily the best - but nicest. I wanted something healthy to start the day and the fruit plate with granola and yogurt was perfect. I added an almond croissant for about $1 US just for good measure. The menu seemed to have the normal Mexican breakfast fare so you'll probably be covered if you have a mixed group. read more

Thank you Yelpisphere! My wife and I were looking for a hearty breakfast that wasn't too filling but just enough to last us until we found a place to eat lunch on our wine tasting excursion up Highway 3. Since we alternated picking restaurants for every meal we had on our 4 day stay in Ensenada, my wife immediately turned to Yelp to help make her decision between the two cafes on opposite sides of the street. Based on the reviews and her craving of chiliquilles, we opted for El Rey Sol. Uniquely French and Mexican, my omelette de camarones was so delicious, but it was more the sauce than the omelette itself. If I had to nitpick, the eggs were slightly over cooked and I would have rathered the sauce be under the omelette rather than on top, but the flavor profile was intense and very memorable. So much so, I will definitely order this again on my return trip. My wife's chiliquilles were good, but she has had better. The pastries were amazing! The service was impeccable and the presentations were nice. For a change of pace from traditional Ensenada cuisine, this place was a definite gem! read more

This restaurant has a very unique and formal vibe out here in downtown Ensenada. I've visited El Rey Sol two times and have been greeted with a warm welcoming. The pianist sets the mood. What El Rey Sol is most known for are its French pastries and this is what we came in for one fine morning. Sadly enough though, they do not start making these pastries until after about 12 noon! We asked to see if any were left from the day before and there were none. Needless to say this was very disappointing! We opted then to have breakfast here. We were attended by Ismael who did a pretty decent job. How could it be any other way - the guy told us he has worked there for 25 years. What stands out about El Rey Sol breakfasts is their value. They serve pretty large portions, We ended up paying about $13 each! This included coffee refills and some pastries like chocolate filled ones and some of those Mexican pastries that look like elephant ears. I ordered the fruit plate since I wanted to eat light as we were going to a paella festival right after eating at El Rey Sol. The only complaint I have is that the fruit plate was full of papaya which is a fruit I simply detest. There weren't very many strawberries in my plate either. They serve the fruit with plain yogurt and granola. Papaya aside the plate was not bad! Most of my friends and even my BF seemed to like the food here. You can even get machaca! I have tried the pastries here at El Rey Sol and must admit they are good! I'm not so sure about how authentically French they are but like them anyway. One of the most recommended pastries are their "Monjitas" which my friend Lorena B. really wanted us to try. They also serve a variety of fruit tarts and if I am not mistaken they also sell eclairs. El Rey Sol is on one of Ensenada's main drags. I like the decor here. It's pretty cute. They have a piano player during breakfast which I think is pretty unique - although most of the tunes he played made me ill.Then again I am REALLY picky with my music tastes. Their restroom was pretty clean. Parking around here can be difficult to find but we have been lucky the two times we came. read more

The service is impeccable. We loved our waiter. They work for tips in Mexico so be generous. The food was good, but not mind blowing. It's average french fare. Do not miss the dessert stand outside of the restaurant. You will not find a more flavorful fruit tart in Baja or the Unites States. We didn't get a chance to try all the desserts, but we enjoyed every one we tasted. There is very little parking nearby so you should walk from a local hotel or Uber in. It is in the nicer part of Ensenada, two blocks away from the rowdy bars on the north side. read more

At one time one of the top 50 restaurants in the world. The menu is extensive and i bet their chefs could create anything one might wish for. Though known for European Cuisine their Mexican dishes rival Caesar's in Loreto and even Del Mar in Guaymas. I love their Huachinango La Veracruzana a gracious serving of fish with many perfectly cooked vegetables and an out of this world tasty red sauce. Everything on their menu, plus service, and decor is perfect. Meals are priced far below value. If it weren't for Ensenada being the home of the world's best fish tacos, were i to live in Ensenada, Mexico i would eat every meal at El Ret Sol. read more

There were several of us and between us all we tried the omelete de nopal, pancakes, machaca, the chilaquiles rojos and the specialty of the house their French toast. No one had a single complaint. We stopped here while visiting in Ensenada and had coffee with desserts. Well the coffee was AMAZING!!!!!!! The desserts didn't disappoint and the atmosphere was great. We ate outside on the sidewalk cafe and it was a great experience up until three ladies sitting directly behind me decided to light up and start smoking. Being that I'm a non-smoker I could have enjoyed my time better with them not there. I strongly recommend having a smoking and non-smoking patio area. Come to Ensenada and go to a French restaurant? Why not?! One of the hardest things about Mexico is finding a good cup of coffee in the morning. This restaurant understands breakfasts, really well. Half the menu is french breakfasts, do yourself a favour and order the pastries. The pastries, about four various croissant-types, are fresh and delicious. I had the eggs benedict (twice, we came two days in a row) and they're tasty and authentic. The other half of the menu is Mexican breakfasts, there is a super "sampler" called the Mexican potpourri that has a bit of everything on it. And the coffee? Great. I would have liked to try this restaurant for supper, but there's only so many meals one can pack into a trip. I do know that this is my favourite breakfast in Ensenada and I will return for that for certain. read more

We stayed at Villa Marina Hotel for Valentine's day weekend and ate breakfast at this restaurant twice. All the staff gave us superior service both times. The ambiance was so nice too. The piano was going playing lovely tunes and when the pianist wasn't on, the music was pleasant as well. The food was great. One day we only ordered pan dulce which hey bake everyday and tea and even that was great! Will definitely visit next time we stay in the area. read more

The service staff is inattentive and needs to be asked multiple times for tea, and the check. Also, they never came by to ask about the food. The food is mediocre at best. My wife got the juevos rancheros. What came out was a mostly cooked over easy egg. The white was still runny but that made the refried beans look even more appetizing. I asked for a recommendation between 2 things and the server gave me the recommendation of the highest priced item on the menu (not one of the 2 things). The Mexican potpourri consisted of overlooked eggs, bland shredded beef, soggy chilaquiles. The atmosphere was fine. The piano player was very good. Avoid this place and go somewhere else. read more

Not tasty at all and food was served on the colder side. The restaurant is known for delicious French pastries. We ordered some and they were dry and tasteless.
