Been going here for years but never actually left them a review. So came here for lunch at 1 pm. First thing always is you have to wait to be seated. It can be hit or miss if you catch a waitress attention to get seated. As usual, it took a few minutes to get a waitress to seat me. Let's talk about the food. Our waitress was Cecilia, very nice lady. Asked for our drinks first and then brought the chips and the salsa and cabbage for our table. Salsa- I do like their salsa which has a nice kick and spice to it. Good thickness that clings to the corn tortilla chips well. 5 stars Their corn chips- not thin and not greasy. Can hold the salsa without breaking. I like it 5 stars I ordered the beef enchilada with red sauce along with rice and beans . Nothing too spectacular with the enchilada... just beef wrapped in the corn tortilla and adding red sauce and cheese. Overall good portion of rice and beans. Can't complain since I know what to expect from El rosal. Overall, I frequent el rosal enough to say that their food is good that I do come back. read more

This Mexican plan is surprisingly very good. Not sure why the reviews are bad here. We went to celebrate my future MIL's birthday. The server is very nice, she gave abundant chips, gave bean dips and salsa (only one serving of dips though, which makes sense but wants to make it clear). I have ordered a chicken torta, the chicken is pounded very thin, nice crispy and well breaded. Inside there's lettuce (not a big fan, should have asked not to put), tomatoes, nice bean spread. The bread is very nice and lightly toasted. The fries are ok though. Everyone on the table enjoyed their foods as well. The ambiance is average but food is very good. Highly recommend. The portions are pretty big too so I had enough leftover for another lunch. They do have chip and salsa as you wait as well. It was quiet the day we went. Had lunch with my friend today. When I got to El Rosal place was packed! Luckily my friend already got us a table. She said she was seated right away. Our waitress brought us chips and salsa and water soon after being seated. I enjoyed the salsa it had a good flavor. We didn't have to wait long before our waitress took our order. I ordered a Chile Relleno Burrito. Food came out at a perfect time. I was able to catch up with my friend before digging in. My plate was hot so that made me happy . Burrito was so good! I loved it!!!! The green sauce was absolutely delicious! And the portion was a great size I was only able to eat half . So yummy! I'm going to be craving this burrito for sure. My friend loved her food as well. I noticed they had a full bar in the restaurant. I'd love to come back and have a margarita. read more

This is an update that I don't like making:( I, like so many of us Modesto folks have enjoyed so many meals here. My daughter & I have ordered the EXACT same thing for over a decade. burrito supreme dry chicken on side. never a problem. The salsa today was off for the first time ever. I enjoy mixing my salsa w/sour cream (that comes on burrito). We all have our little things. And the reason I say dry as it comes w/red sauce automatically. I let Lexi know the salsa was off and could I get some enchilada sauce instead? I mean ... it comes w/sauce anyway. She said sure no problem. She delivers a teeny weeny maybe .25 oz. Plastic cup w/the sauce. Now...here we go... this is where it turns the bill comes. A very unsweet gal named Lexi with a "I don't care rolling her eyes trying to inform me of the logistics of their entry system " type attitude brings bill and voila... that teeny sauce a whopping $1.35 . When I asked her about it.. she was so rude & condescending... I'm about 30 years her elder. She said she had to charge me. Wait... doesn't it come with sauce? She said yes. Well, I'm simply asking for my sauce now as the table salsa didn't taste right. You know....that weird feeling in your mouth it had turned acidic. Anyway, I asked for a mgr. as she said there was nothing she could do. goes away, comes back and it's off the bill. But not without a lecture that this is a one time deal. I said fine.. in the future, I'll just ask for my sauce on side up front just in case salsa off. no charge that way. It's silly and ridiculous. So, if you don't ask for sauce on the side up front, then you will get charged. I let her know with her snarky attitude I would be updating my review and her name would be the highlight. She did NOT care. And snarkily spelled her name for me with a smile. This is it folks... the younger generation. The cost of goods and trying to find good employees has ended with the gals we've seen working there for years. :( so sad. back to Standiford location. For a little bit. Hopefully she will move on by the time I give them my patronage. read more

I'm leaving one star, but it needs an explanation. I went there with a $50 gift card (been there a few times in the past and been very happy). The food was good as well as the service, should be 4-5 stars right? When we went to pay for lunch we gave the gift card, after awhile she brought back the card with the bill and said you only have $12 (forgot the exact amount) on this card. The card was new, and thought it weird that the person that gave us the card as a gift told us it had $50 on it. Not knowing otherwise, we paid the remainder and left. My wife told the person that gifted her the card and she was positive it had $50 she even kept the receipts and activated the card while in the restaurant. After getting home my wife was able to look up the card (I don't have a clue how) and noticed the card was charged the entire amount of the bill and then charged again the remainder (plus we paid the rest of the bill with our debit card). My wife called the restaurant and was told a manager needed to handle it. Over the course of three weeks she has made many calls and gone back to the restaurant, only to be told they didn't have a manager there again. After three weeks this is no longer a mistake. It's incompetence and theft. Too bad for the staff at this restaurant, they try hard and put out good food. Do to management or lack of they ruined the business to us. I'm really sad to have to leave this review because I've truly loved this place. I've been coming here for years, usually once or twice a week, because I enjoy the food so much. Unfortunately, my last three visits have been very disappointing due to the service. My water and Pepsi were never refilled unless I asked, I had to flag someone down just to place my order, and again to get the check. It felt like I was constantly trying to get someone's attention. I'm honestly really bummed about it and unsure if I'll be back, which makes me sad because this used to be one of my favorite spots. read more

Waitresses were awesome. The food though was mediocre. It wasn't worth what I paid. I got a grilled fish taco. The fish was too salty. The cabbage was wilted hot not cold and crispy. The food was warm to say it's least the fish was hot the taco was hot. The plate was cold. It usually comes too hot, but you can't touch it so you made the rice and beans kind of cool. I don't know if you like soggy cabbage, hot cabbage go to this restaurant if you like the cabbage, cold and crisp, I would say maybe find a different restaurant Again. Service is phenomenal. Advice to future patrons. Do not sit in the booth next to the soda machine that is at work constantly. And you might tell your staff to wait to fill the ice machine (7 buckets of ice) when there are not guests eating in the booth 5 feet away. Food is reasonable and good. read more

Went here today to have lunch w/ a friend after running some errands. I've never been here before so it was my first time but a friend that she works with recommened the restuarant so we thought we'd give it a tey since it was one of their favs. #1 lol def dont wait for seating bc I got there first and read a please wait to be seated sign and stood there like a dummy lol. Just seat yourself hahahah Anywayss, so once I got there the waitress was quick to bring salsa and a cabage dip. I thought this looked really authentic and I'm not a salsa person but my friend loved it and thought the cabage etc was great. It did take a few minutes for our waitress to come over but she was pretty busy since we did eat at everyones lunch time about. The resturant seemed pretty full for a Wednesday. Once we ordered I got a BLT and my friend got a bean burrito. My BLT w/ fries was $9.95 and her bean burrito a la carte was $3.95 I believe. My family and ai have been very good paying customers for about 20 years now. The food is good but last night I bit into a Carne Asada Green Sauce Wet Burrito Supreme and felt a huge pain in my mouth. I recently got dental implants in which costs tens of thousands of dollars. I bit into a ROCK! Yes, you heard me right, a Rock! Not a bone or anything like that, it is a legit piece of a rock! I now have to go into my Dentist to make sure I didn't crack any of my Dental implants! I am completely blown away and El ROSAL #2 has now lost my family and I business! Met a friend here, I had not been here for years! Staff were wonderful! Sat down and immediately was served water and menus. I had the vegetarian tapatia, so delicious and flavorful! Always a solid go to for good Mexican food. The servers are always nice, quick, and keep the place clean. The food items are consistently, good, but some of them may have a very unique taste. For example, the salsa may not be your specific style that you enjoy or the refried beans might not be how you are used to having them prepared. The Mexican rice is OK, but could use just a little bit more flavor. They can get quite busy, but most of the time we never have to wait more than 5 to 10 minutes at most. I would say El Rosal 2 is one of the better el rosals, and worth the drive to bypass one that might be closer. read more

Chavez Spicy Burrito. I had the steak. It was super spicy which I love. Definitely glad they used red sauce here. Pretty tasty. I would get it with chicken next time just for kicks. The restaurant is located near a man street and had a steady stream of patrons. I overate on chips and salsa. I like thick salsa but this was runny. Still tasty. Load up on all those delicious carbs and wash them down with margaritas at El Rosal. This is one of I think four locations, but is the one closest to where my wife's family lived, so we are still in the habit. Plan on waiting. Come inside, put your name on the clip board and wait. You can also eat from the regular menu in the very nice bar, which has its own entrance as well as from inside the restaurant. Bar is very capable, so order what you want. They will be able to accommodate your wishes. Menu is quite extensive. All your regular Mexican favorites plus more. Breakfast, lunch and dinner. Extremely popular. Many, unique to most Americanos, soup options. But some are only offered on certain days. Menudo(sat and sun only). If you are hung over, menudo will do the trick for you. Very spicy and flavorful. Caldo De Res, basically beef stew, on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Carne En Su Jugo, beef in gravy (sat and sun only). Everyday soups include: Pozole (hominy corn in broth), Caldo De Pollo (Chicken soup) and Seafood Soup which will knock your socks off flavor-wise, made with fish and shrimp. I you are just along with the ride and just don't want to do Mexican, you can get salads, a bunch of chicken dishes, vegetarian meals or just a grilled cheese sandwich or hamburger. BUT...you are really missing out on a flavor voyage through Mexico food. Obviously, they have lots of variety dishes of steak, pork, seafoods and even a kids menu. Pleasant and competent Mexican classics, with lunch specials and adult beverages. My chimichanga didn't blow my socks off, but it also did not offend. They cook meat without spices and sauces, so everything depends on the sauce on top or dipped -- which is not my preference, but it was *nice* bland chicken, the salsa verde was flavorful, and the chimi exterior was nicely crisp without being greasy. Service was fine. Lunch portions are a size that will fill up a reasonable person but not send you back to the office groggy. read more
