If disappointment had a flavor, it would be the fajitas at El Charro. I ordered fajitas expecting that classic sizzling, seasoned, mouthwatering experience. What I got instead was what I can only describe as lightly warmed, paper-thin sadness. The meat was dry, completely unseasoned, and so thin I'm pretty sure it qualified as deli meat. I've had better flavor from airport food... and that's saying something. No sizzle, no aroma, no personality. Just a plate that looked like it gave up halfway through cooking. Service? Let's just say it matched the food--uninspired and forgettable. The only positive is that this meal actually helped my diet because after a few bites I had zero desire to keep eating. So technically... thanks for that? Would I come back? Only if I needed a reminder of what fajitas are not supposed to be. 0/10 for flavor 10/10 for reinforcing my self-control read more

What a great find in Turlock! I've never been here.. but based on the handy dandy reviews on Yelp... well, gave it a try. We were greeted immediately. cute inside with a full bar. a few beer handles too! even an IPA was flowing. it was packed. We were immediately served the warmest crispiest nice & salty chips! And the salsa... loved the salsa! I ordered the 1 item with beans and rice. $15.50. Cheese enchilada w/red sauce. The green sauce has pork in it:( our server was friendly and knowledgeable about menu. my friend ordered the carne asada tacos. I enjoyed my dinner. I would not rate the red sauce as my favorite. But it was good. I will definitely go back. also they have about 4 big screen TVs playing. Plenty of parking in back. I can't wait for warmer days as they have a cute little patio in front. read more

We decided last minute to host New Year's Eve at our place and didn't feel like cooking so I called around looking for a family meal. This was a same day order. The employee was very friendly and explained the different options available. My sister had mentioned eating here before and she loved ordering their Tequila lime chicken. So I decided to order a family meal of the chicken plus another family meal of a taco bar. They allowed two meats, I chose carnitas and asada. They mentioned each meal would feed 5/6 people. I would say that the chicken meal could probably feed 8. Overall everyone really enjoyed the food. Many of us were able to get seconds. Tortillas, lemons, salsas, chips, rice, beans were all included. I believe I paid $95 plus tax per meal. For the quality of food I think the price was fair. read more

WOW!! We had a party of 16 for lunch. Adrienne was our server and a perfect gentleman too. We are all seniors and each one of us was treated with the utmost respect. Small place, but full of patrons which is a good sign. Pretty loud place as everything. We got seated quickly. Staff was super attentive and food came out pretty quickly. Here for work and was hoping for some good Mexican food since I was in the Central Valley with a large Hispanic population. Taking a chance at looking at the yelp reviews I chose El Charro for dinner ordering the pollo enchiladas with verde sauce as my entree with no appetizers. Food was average as the chicken had no flavor and was hoping it would have been better. Entree portion size wasn't an issue. Chips were fresh and were not store bought but the real disappointment was the Pico de gallo or what can better be interpreted as something like Pace Picante sauce out of a jar. Had the salsa for the chips been house made it would most likely have been better. Service was solid and no complaints in that area. Overall 3 stars for my visit. read more

My chicken enchiladas were dry. The chicken tortilla soup was not enough broth. My carnitas taco was dry as well. This restaurant belongs in the desert. .. But the service was super good!!! The girls are very attentive and always refill ur water just right when you need a refill! And honestly it's all about the service!!! read more

We hadn't been to El Charro for years but really happy we went in. Good food and excellent service. The folks that work there are very nice and on the ball. It's a little chilly inside and needs some remodeling. The bathroom is dated and not the cleanest. We will definitely start going again! read more

We just beat the rush and our group of 14 could be accommodated. The staff was ridiculously attentive!!! The food was great! We all left with boxes cause the portions were ample. What a find El Charro was and we are so glad we found this gem. We were craving for Mexican food while in Turlock and again, thank you Yelp fam for your honest reviews. This place indeed deserved all the great reviews! We arrived around 2:30pm on a Sunday, 4/2/23 and the place was packed! We waited for about 20 minutes and we got seated. Adrian was our server and he was awesome! He was friendly, patient with all our questions and he engaged with us which you know how much customer service means to us. Adrian was attentive, cleared used plates and refilled our drinks quickly. He helped us with what was popular dishes and he was very honest with his recommendations, we appreciate that so much. The complimentary chips and salsa were delicious! Then our order quickly started to arrive. We ordered nachos supreme for appetizer and that was so delicious with so much fillings. The carne asada on top was delicious and gave the perfect protein to the meal. We ordered carne asada plate, 2 items combo with taco, chile relleno, enchiladas, carne asada burrito and quesadilla with carne asada. Yes, our family loves steak! Everything tasted so good. We enjoyed all our food. My son who is a picky eater enjoyed the carne asada that Adrian suggested for him. The servings were plentiful, some of us barely finished our meals. We were so happy that our cravings were satisfied. The place was classic, homey and the ambiance was comfortable. Love all the decor! Glad to have found this place before heading back home. Step inside to experience authentic Mexican cuisine. Chili Rellenos are outstanding. Large menu with many shrimp offerings. Don't think you could go wrong with anything on the menu. Drinks looked interesting. Service was adequate, prompt and courteous. Customers and TVs are loud, hard to carry on normal conversation. Decorations will take you to Cancun! The food is always phenomenal! Never have a complaint regarding the food but unfortunately the service needs work. They are not very attentive to there customers. The younger ladies that work there stand around laughing n talking to eachother when they could be tending to there customers. We stopped in for a glass of ices tea and flautas and taquitos. They were the best in town! The beef was tender and delicious, no fat or gristle. The chicken was tender and flavourful. I came here as part of a group of 11. The staff were friendly and helpful, and got some tables put together quick. They start you off with chips and salsa, which are really good. I had to pace myself to make sure I didn't fill up on them. The wait staff were really attentive. I ordered the Camarones Veracruz, bacon wrapped shrimp stuffed with cheese, and they were amazing. Everyone else seemed to really enjoy their meals too. My friend got a wet burrito which was massive, and he wolfed the whole thing down. One of the kids in the group didn't like the salsa or something that was on his tacos, so they made him some new ones then and there. And when the manager found out that two of the people in our group were getting married two days later, he brought them tequila shots on the house to celebrate, which was nice. Aside from the food and the great staff, the dining area was comfortable and clean. If I lived closer, I'd probably go to El Charro fairly regularly. Excellent food & great, friendly service, which to me is a big part of making a loyal, repeat customer, of which I call myself after this first visit. My customer requested I bring food from El Charro when I brought lunch to his office because the entire staff loves the restaurant's food. But this review is based on the super chicken burrito with everything. Delicious! I'm not great at giving details on burritos so I won't. Just trust me, this burrito is the best I've tasted in a long long time. In the past few years, every place I've been to for a super chicken burrito has bean disappointing. They've all been bland. Bland...& filling. So for ~$6-$15, I had a blah lunch experience that satisfied my hunger. But not with El Charro's super burrito because this time I had an enjoyable one! If I could rate this place ten stars I would. The food was excellent. Best Mexican food we have found in the fifteen years we have been in the area. Normally we stay around Modesto but decided to venture into Turlock tonight. Boy are we glad we did. This hands down is the place to go for good Mexican food.
