For our entrees we chose shrimp mofongo- which we really see in small cities being that it is the national dish of Puerto Rico- and the paella for one. Both were wonderful. Decided to check it out for dinner on a Friday night and was shocked it was so empty. It's only a matter of time before this place fills up! I'm assuming baseball season will have this spot packed. This is the second location (original is on woodruff rd). If you look up the other location- they have fabulous reviews and rightfully so. They have daily specials, lunch specials and happy hour! A DJ on Saturday afternoons as well as brunch. We sat at the bar and Vanessa took great care of us. She gave us great recommendations. I love that they make their own drink mixes! It makes all the difference in quality. We tried a mango mojito and Pisco passion. Both were yummy! Pisco passion is strong fyi. The mood for something filling/delicious was fulfilled and then some! We both got mofongos which come with your choice of plantains: sweet, green or trifongo. We only tried the trifongo with roasted pork (which was amazing) but our favorite was the shrimp al ajillo (garlic shrimp). For the record- last time I had mofongo this good & flavorful I was in Puerto Rico. Safe to say we LOVED everything about both dishes. Still thinking about the garlic sauce with the shrimp! Chefs kiss! And the crispy pork belly pieces on top of the plantains that just melt in your mouth! The Ribeye steak board was recommended by a local (also dining at the the bar). He RAVED about the steak and the sides it comes with. Apparently only this location has a magical creamed corn dish as one of the sides for the all steak boards. Will be back to see how magical it really is! Ambiance is hip & fun with a splash of casual elegance. Great for a family dinner, date night, girls night- whatever. The only downside to planning your visit here is the parking. No private lot & street parking is scarce. I believe there's a garage across the street? Tonight was my mom's birthday, which also happens to be Valentine's Day. We had a 6:30 pm reservation and arrived a few minutes early. When we checked in, we were told there were 4-5 parties ahead of us and we'd need to wait. Fine. It's a busy night. I totally understood. I suggested we wait at the bar, only to be told they couldn't accommodate guests there. Weird, I thought, so my mom and I waited in the full-to-packed lobby area. For nearly 45 minutes. With a reservation. When we were finally seated, it was immediately clear something was very wrong. No parties were actually eating. Some guests were sitting with empty tables or boxes, clearly finished eating and just waiting to escape. But no food was actually being eaten. We soon learned why. The entire restaurant was being handled by one server, who was also bartending. Once seated, we waited about 20 minutes with no water, no menus for drinks, and no utensils before the server reached us. She was kind, professional, and clearly doing everything she possibly could, but she was completely overwhelmed and unsupported. Drinks took about 30 minutes. We ordered food at the same time. The food never arrived. We watched multiple parties leave without eating. Some may have walked out entirely, and honestly, I don't blame them. We ordered a second round of drinks, still hoping things might turn around. They didn't. By 8:45 pm, more than two hours after our reservation, we were told our food was "coming right out." But at that point, it was simply too late. I paid for our drinks and we left hungry. (And, man, I was looking forward to that mofongo.) This was not the server's fault. She was doing her absolute best under impossible conditions. This was a management failure, full stop. Understaffing a restaurant on Valentine's Day to this degree is not a fluke. It's a decision. It's a shame, because Tamarindo has a thoughtful Caribbean menu and, based on past visits, real potential. But execution matters.
