I've eaten at Tamarindo Latin Cuisine before and had a lovely experience, which is why what happened tonight was such a disappointment. Tonight was my mom's birthday, which also happens to be Valentine's Day. We had a 6:30 pm reservation and arrived a few minutes early. When we checked in, we were told there were 4-5 parties ahead of us and we'd need to wait. Fine. It's a busy night. I totally understood. I suggested we wait at the bar, only to be told they couldn't accommodate guests there. Weird, I thought, so my mom and I waited in the full-to-packed lobby area. For nearly 45 minutes. With a reservation. When we were finally seated, it was immediately clear something was very wrong. No parties were actually eating. Some guests were sitting with empty tables or boxes, clearly finished eating and just waiting to escape. But no food was actually being eaten. We soon learned why. The entire restaurant was being handled by one server, who was also bartending. Once seated, we waited about 20 minutes with no water, no menus for drinks, and no utensils before the server reached us. She was kind, professional, and clearly doing everything she possibly could, but she was completely overwhelmed and unsupported. Drinks took about 30 minutes. We ordered food at the same time. The food never arrived. We watched multiple parties leave without eating. Some may have walked out entirely, and honestly, I don't blame them. We ordered a second round of drinks, still hoping things might turn around. They didn't. By 8:45 pm, more than two hours after our reservation, we were told our food was "coming right out." But at that point, it was simply too late. I paid for our drinks and we left hungry. (And, man, I was looking forward to that mofongo.) This was not the server's fault. She was doing her absolute best under impossible conditions. This was a management failure, full stop. Understaffing a restaurant on Valentine's Day to this degree is not a fluke. It's a decision. It's a shame, because Tamarindo has a thoughtful Caribbean menu and, based on past visits, real potential. But execution matters. Tonight was a complete sh*tshow, and sadly, it's not an experience I'm willing to repeat. I truly hope the server got a stiff drink and a raise. She earned both. read more

But I made a reservation two weeks in advance and we still waited over an hour to be seated. What made it more frustrating was watching walk ins get seated before us. I tried to give the restaurant the benefit of the doubt. Then the table next to us mentioned they had been there since 6:30 PM and by 8:35 PM they had only received two glasses of wine and still no food. At that point it felt like more than just a small delay. I completely understand that issues come up, but with only around 20 to 30 people in the restaurant, it did not seem like the kitchen should have been that backed up. We also never saw our server. I started with the Queso Frito Con Mermelada De Guayaba--crispy fried cheese paired with sweet guava marmalade. It was the perfect balance of salty and sweet, and honestly, I could've eaten a second round. For my main, I had the steak with rice and beans, and it was everything you want in a comfort dish--tender, flavorful, and deeply satisfying. I paired it with a passion fruit mojito, which was refreshing, tropical, and not overly sweet. A perfect sip between bites. But what truly made the night was Nina. The tastiest food I've had up here yet! I'm part Cuban, and my family moved here from Florida 2 1/2 years ago. We were spoiled, finding Cuban food all around the Tampa Bay area. We love everything about South Carolina but missed our Cuban restaurants--until we discovered this gem in Simpsonville! We went to Tamarindo Latin Cuisine last night for the second time. The first time we had to wait over a half hour for a table but this time there was no wait. For a Friday night only four tables full. The first time we went we thought the food was great. This time we felt the food was even better and excellently prepared. One of us ordered steak and onions the other braised ribs. The flavor and seasoning were delicious. One thing that has changed is they seem short-staffed. One person indicated that it was due to changes in immigration policy that perhaps they do not have the workers they had before. I don't know if that is or isn't the case but I do known the ambiance is wonderful with several locations for selfie photo ops, theres a decent sized side room for small events, and theres no wait for being seated and the food is delicious. We didn't wait too long for the food, but it took awhile for the cocktail with one bartender also being a server. This may be a nice quiet place to have intimate drinks with an appetizer. I would recommend this restaurant /venue and please just say have grace and patience with the short staff. The community really needs to revisit Tamarindo and support their business and enjoy the good food! My rojas Sangria was delicious by the way! read more

Friends and I made a 5pm reservation for Friday May 1, 2026, for 6 people. We were dining before a play right down the street. While the food was exceptional, I have to say our visit was NOT. Our table was not ready when we arrived. We were the only people in the restaurant, and it still took over 15 minutes just to get seated and water for the table. We were told that the bartender was not in yet and we could not have drinks. Then we were given the option to behind the bar and make them ourselves. Luckily the bartender showed up just as we began that endeavor. Told the server/bartender we were on a schedule for the play. It still took another 20-30 minutes before we received drinks, one of the glasses was broken (honest mistake). After being there an hour our order was finally taken. I guess the kitchen was short staffed as well as our server informed that she was helping there to get out food out quickly. As I said earlier, the food was AMAZING, but when it finally made its way to the table we had 15 minutes to eat and be out the door. Plus, some plates were missing key ingredients which took more time to procure. I probably would have left it at that but... Since we were in a huge hurry at this point, one of our group paid the entire bill to be split later. The final straw for us. was that our server added an 18% large party tip and the proceeded to let us tip another $50.00 on top of that. Yes, we should have noticed it but after everything else we went through at least HONESTY would have been appreciated. Tried to email the restaurant directly but it bounced back. They were in the process of renewing their liquor license when we went so it wasn't quite as bustling as I believe it has been in the past. Our group still had a great time nonetheless. Service: our server was great! She helped recommend some entrees for our group since it was our first time visiting and she also took the time to explain the more traditional menu items. Food: The food was great! I had the seafood paella for one and it was MASSIVE. Could easily have fed two people. We were visiting only for the day and found this gem. We enjoyed Tamarindo very much. Spacious. Great decor and awesome ambiance. Staff were very friendly. We visited only for drinks as we already had dinner but ended up trying their lentils soup and the mofongo appetizer. Both were flavorful. The food smelled delicious. We also had several different drinks regular mojitos, pina colada, passion fruit mojitos and Frío Frío (tequila drink). Wish we had an extra day in town to try other dishes. Tamarindo was about a block away from our AirBnB in Simpsonville, I kept driving by it and mentioning to my son that we should check it out. After 2 days of eating at a few other places that weren't great, I was hoping this would be the place that turned things around.. and it DID NOT disappoint. The decor is beautiful and the music was popping!! My son and I had a great time singing along to the music. Diego, our server, was amazing! We're Hispanic, so we kind of chatted a little bit about where we're from and he was really helpful with his drink and food recommendations and he was really very attentive. The food was delicious! Every dish was spectacular. The chicharrones de pollo reminded me of visiting the Dominican Republic in the summers when I was a kid. The plantains sliders ..you get 3 ...they were very good and a bit crispy...I probably would have liked a slightly less crisp plantain...but that is me. The plantain "mash" was like mashed potatoes but very dense The trea leches dessert was delicious and honestly the best past. And plenty to share or for 1-4 people. Went here for the first time on 1/14/23 for the wife's birthday dinner. I was excited to try a new place and had very high hopes. I was a bit disappointed. Now it wasn't the food or service. The food was phenomenal and the service was excellent. I ordered the Grilled Chicken Breast - Pechuga de Pollo a la Parilla (With Mashed Potatoes and Sauteed Vegetables). The chicken was tender and juicy and was really good. The vegetables (broccoli and cauliflower) were great along with the mashed potatoes, cabbage and tomato. And one of the best gin & tonic's I've ever had. However, this place is really small and really crowded, and I don't do small crowded places well. And it was really loud, mostly due to the music blasting out of the speakers, and the customers trying to talk above everyone else and the music. There were 7 of us and holding a conversation was almost impossible. Now, with all that having been said, yes, I am planning a return trip when the weather warms up a bit. They have a really nice patio and I do want to try out. Honestly, I think the patio area is about the same size as the inside. Only open since September, this is a new highly recommended local restaurant. We made reservations and walked right in. Debora was our server and her smile made us feel welcome. She was very knowledgeable about the menu. We started with their house empanadas (trio of Patelitos) they have 4 to choose from, beef, chicken, shrimp, and cheese. They come beautifully displayed on a rack... they were really good, like we got full on them and wondered "how we gonna eat the rest of our food" Jason got a Kailua colada, which was perfectly mastered with coffee beans on top. I got the tamarind Margarita.. It looked innocent enough but it had a punch to it. Our entrees came out and I got something similar to a Cuban sandwich but this one has got extra goodies in it... I'm just a sucker for pickles. J got the grouper filet with coconut sauce, really fresh and flavorful. The presentation of all their offerings were beautifully plated. The whole restaurant, so much thought went into all of it. As soon as you walk in it's a Latin sensory experience from your eyes to your mouth and into your tummy. As the server is taking our drink order another party walked out saying "you forgot about us" to the server and walking out. Should've been a red flag. Took 1 hour to just get our drink order out, appetizers took just as long. We didn't see our server again for 30 mins after we had our appetizers. Once we put in our meal order it took another hour to get our meal. We sat down at 7:00 pm, our entrees did not come out till around 10:00 pm. We were then given our 3 checks and from the get go the waiter told us to double check them because "they were probably wrong". I thought, then why would you still bring them wrong?. Well they were wrong. I had dishes from another guest on my ticket and our drinks were not 1/2 off as advertised. All 3 checks were wrong and 1 even had a drink they had not ordered at all. I decided on a farmer's plate from the brunch menu, which came out as a gourmet dish of eggs, ham and cheese, with smashed plantains and pickled onions.
