As we were passing by Morris park and 180 St. just off the train station, when we saw this restaurant. We were not sure to come in as it didn't smell to food. Very clean! I didn't know or heard about this restaurant before so I had many questions about our orders. Gentleman who serve us was very knowledgeable and really nice! best of all, spoke clear English, which was great! He answer all my questions and even offer a little taste of horchata which was delicious! I had Pepper steak and my partner had Soup, both dishes were delicious. Ive been wanting to try this spot for a while. My friend had told me about their pupusas and I had to try them. I was not disappointed at all! I sat at the bar and had 3 pupusas 2 revueltas (pork & cheese) and 1 chicken and cheese. The revuelta was definitely my favorite. I came here for the pupusas and i got them! They were so good and if you like some spice in your food please add the green jalapeño sauce with them. The place is super casual and they even have a pool table in the back. The waiter was so nice and the best part was that the pupusas were only $2 each!!! So good! I will come back for more. read more

This restaurant deserves 5 stars for meeting our expectations: an affordable and authentic meal only blocks from the Bronx Zoo. I would not recommend it for large groups, and until they finish their decorating I would shy away from it as a date spot. The primary reason to go is the WONDERFUL food. My family was looking for lunch while visiting the Bronx Zoo, and encountered this gem on their grand opening. The restaurant decor had yet to be completed, the bare walls made us unsure whether they were serving yet. We felt reassured by the freshly printed menus, which are full of colorful images of the dishes. A note to tourists at the zoo, don't let the all-Spanish menu intimidate you, our waitress was patient and helpful in describing many dishes to my mother. The Horchata deserves a paragraph. I am very picky about my horchata, and criticize many NYC establishments for using a mix, which can leave a gritty texture on my tongue. This was homemade and authentic, with less sweetness then I expected. After tasting mine, the family bought a round for all of us. Bravo El Salvadoreño, your horchata was top notch. We began the meal with freshly fried chips and a simple salsa. The chips were light and still hot from the fryer. For lunch, I had the carne azada (it met my Los Angeles standards). We had ripe and well fried maduros, with a slightly crisped exterior and soft sweet center. Two of us raved about their huevo ranchero; the eggs were perfectly done, and accompanied by thick and warm handmade tortillas. We also sampled a tamales de elotes, which was served out of the husk, with a smooth consistency and accompanied by excellent sour cream. The restaurant is definitely geared to be a neighborhood favorite. As a tourist in the Bronx, I am delighted that we found a great spot, which is close to the Bronx Zoo! read more

This place serves up some of the best South American food we've had anywhere in New York City. We were skeptical when we first walked in because it had minimal decor and wasn't crowded. I'm glad we stuck around. It's great to have a place like this so close to the Bronx Zoo. The staff was friendly and patient with explaining the menu items. But more importantly, everything we had was delicious. I was particularly impressed with the breakfast items, including the huevos rancheros. I used to live in the Bronx and there are a lot of restaurants like this: family owned, small business, scant Yelp reviews (or no page at all), and only locals can tell you which ones are good or bad. El Salvadoreno is one of the good ones. This spot is Salvadorian food at its finest. We had a selection of different pupusas and tacos. I'd recommend 2-3 per person (ideally 2.5). I loved the bean and cheese pupusa, chicken and cheese pupusa, and the chicken taco. The fried chicken taco actually wasn't too good. The chicken is white meat and flavorful. The beans were perfectly prepared. The lettuce and tomatoes were also flavorful and en pointe. Prices were super cheap. The interior of this place is no nonsense. I also loved the selection of hot sauces. This spot is right near the Bronx Zoo and the food is better and more affordable than anywhere inside the zoo. read more

I don't speak Spanish well. The lovely waitress didn't speak English well. The translator on my phone couldn't reach the internet. Hilarity ensued as I tried to ask for vegetarian options. I ended up with a festival of beige food without a vegetable in sight. If you are also a veggie-lover and aren't fluent in Spanish, I thought it might be helpful for you to have some useful Spanish phrases. To say: Sorry, my understanding of Spanish is like that of a very stupid child. You could say, "Lo siento. Mi comprensión de español es como la de un niño muy estúpido." To say: I'm a vegetarian. You could say, "Soy vegetariano." For: What's good on your menu for someone who doesn't eat meat? You could say, "¿Qué me recomiendas de su menú para alguien que no come animales muertos?" To say: Are the re-fried beans made with pig fat, or with vegetable oil? You could say, "¿Los frijoles refritos hechos con manteca de cerdo o con aceite vegetal?" I hope this helps you have a better time at this restaurant than I had. I blame my own language skills and not the server. The regular customers seemed very happy with their meals. :( read more

If I could give less then one star I would. I ordered over the phone on a Monday at 2:45pm. Arrived at the location at 3pm to pick up the food. The place is empty and I was told consistently another 10 minutes, another 5 minutes. Until 45 minutes later that I walked out with my food because I could not wait anymore and felt that it was absolutely ridiculous. The place was not busy enough to justify the long wait and they seemed to not care or be apologetic about making the customer wait that long. read more

Food is ok but stop going there because they NEVER can make deliveries. First they tell you they only make deliveries before 8, i call at 7 and then they tell you they make deliveries untill 6pm. Then i call earlier than that and then they tell you they dont make deliveries that day..... Seriously.. How can you do business like that? ...
