Pernil is dry like the Sahara. More flavor on the meat when it was still alive. I don't know how they can present this as edible food. The habichuelas guisadas had a diabetic sweet taste. Honestly felt very half and half about this spot, and to be honest, in the Bronx especially, you can get much better hispanic food and service. What kept them from at least a 3 is how long we ended up waiting for food. I don't mind waiting for food, you can recover if its delicious, but here they try to disguise mistakes and flavors when you can't. To start, the appetizers, alcapurrias were too dry. Mayoketchu was saving the day on these, but not enough so. Tried to wash it down with coffee, but it tasted like water. My porkchops were dry, but I give them compliments on the way the beans were prepared. The carne guisada was almost as if it was prepared by a whole different kitchen considering it was moist, flavorful, and overall delicious. The best dish easily was the asopao de camarones. While I felt the broth could have been more shrimpy vs using the chicken broth used, it was still amazing. If they made everything like they made this, it would be a better establishment overall. The most RACIST resturant I ever experienced! They lied about the manager not being there when I wanted to order over $2000 worth of food for Thanksgiving. No one spoke English, but they laughed and spoke spanish for around 5 minutes. They didn't know I ordered there every year. Stopped in for dinner while working in the area. Nice, busy Spanish food place. I ordered chicken with yellow rice and plantains. Got a nice portion of chicken, it was really tasty, along with the rice which wasn't dried out. The plantains were soft and sweet. All in all it was a good meal that didn't break the bank. Great little spot for when you are craving authentic spanish food. We go to our usual little spots but decided to try this place on late New Year's day night. We had gotten the boneless chicken chunk combo with a side order of the pernil.The chicken chunks were good but the portion was a tad smaller and the chunks where more of.. well small chunks which did not contain much white meat. However, the white rice was really well made but we couldn't opt for Yellow rice as the beans are made into the rice. I don't mind the beans but some people like my bf is not a huge of it. We also got an order of the tostones -- these were made with love and it showed. The crispiness of these and they were far from dry. You can basically eat these alone without the mijito sauce. The pernil was just average. Not sure if it was because we came late but the meat was a bit on the dry side. The combo also came with a medium bottle soda and a salad. The food is good but they way they be lying about the prices robbing people is crazy. First the lady say the large carne guisa is $22 then when they guy ask her to charge me he said it's $20 then another guy said no its $24 plus tax. WTF??? Ridiculous trying to rob customers. The lunch special is seven bucks (choice of meat with beans, rice and sweet plantains) the portion is generous, awesome whole chickens as well. Rice and beans = perfect, pork sandwich is great and reasonable @ $5.50. Many value packed combos pork, chicken, beef and seafood with sides priced from 17 to 20 dollars. Gets very crowded during lunch and a bit chaotic so I mostly take out, parking is imposable. Clean large dining room with windows all around give a nice open feel to this restaurant. After reading about this place on NYT as being the temple of pork, I had to see it for myself. It was exactly what I expected and then some. The fried pork skin and deep fried pork chunks were delightful as well as the tostones and yellow rice and beans. The garlic sauce was so good that came with the tostones I dipped everything in it. $25 for a ton of food for two people and enough for two lunches of leftovers for the next day. The Patelitos were soggy, and the ground beef had the taste and consistency of "Golden Crust" style beef patties; not what I expected or wanted when ordering from a Dominican Style restaurant. Really mad at myself for going to the chicken spot across the street after playing basketball and not going to Bohio instead. As a kid growing up in the area I always walked by this place, mouth watering at all the delicious poultry on display. Not once did I enter Bohio. Moving out of the Bronx for a couple years and coming back now the gf and I walked the mean streets of the Bronx. Upon showing her the schools I went to and stores I use to shop in we ran into Bohio and since we were both hungry we stepped in for a nice lunch. Best decision we could have made. We chose a family meal which consist of a whole chicken, rice and beans, green salad, maduros, and a Coke. We also got 1/2 a lbs of chicharon. The chicken was so well seasoned and almost tasted hickory. I don't know how they do it but it's some good stuff. Beans are the best! they are seasoned jut right with a nice thick texture. I crave this place ever since going for the first time. I can't lie, the food is the best in the area. We've tried nearly every Dominican spot in the area and non comes close. Good thing about this spot is that they serve not only Puerto Rican dishes but Dominican and from what I saw Cuban food too. You can't be mad at that at all. It's a small walk from our apt but definitely worth it. Place is so good that it's been featured in numerous shows and magazines/newspapers.
