Despite being spoiled for choice when it comes to cuisines in NY, I think most would agree that despite having a plethora of Mexican food here, the execution is lacking, unless you know where to look. And if you know where to look, you will look in the Bronx, at places like this family restaurant, named for the canals of Mexico City. They have an extensive menu, covering tortas, burritos, tacos, sopes, quesadillas, toastadas, flautas, and much more. I zeroed in on an order of shrimp coctel and chile relleno, imagining the portions I'm used to in parts of Brooklyn and Manhattan. I was overwhelmed by the portion sizes, meant for someone with more capacity than me or a small family. In any case, we grubbed on both dishes. I'd say the dishes were lacking the oomph and flavor I had envisioned for the meal going in, but the prices, portion sizes, and the energy of the space still made the visit worth it in my book. A friend of mine took me here for a late lunch and it was great. We shared the guacamole with chips. I had the birria tacos, horchata and the tres leche cake. Everything was amazingly delicious. The service was very good. The place is medium size and well decorated. The outside doesn't look very clean or nice at all but I trusted the reviews on here and they were right on point. They were playing loud Mexican wedding type music. It was fun but I prefer a more quiet and relaxed atmosphere when I eat. I enjoyed myself and highly recommend this place. read more

I love this restaurant. I've lost county how many times I've gone. I work about a mile away. I walk to it, either with co-workers, or alone. The enchiladas con bistek y salsa rojas is probably my favorite thing to order. Anywhere. I've taken lots of co-workers and everyone says "nice call!" The staff are lovely. We came in for breakfast as the restaurant was opening. The food and service were fantastic. We ordered the mole enchiladas, and the mole was delicious and rich, but not too sweet. We also ordered the pancita / menudo, which was some of the best I've had. The waitress was also incredibly nice. I splattered some menudo on my (old gym) shirt. Everything seemed right, including the quality of the ingredients, the presentation, and the service. Cliffnotes: 4.5/5 steadily becoming my favorite taco spot . Though on the pricier side, their Tinga tacos or Tinga anything just hits the spot for me. They don't skimp the meat and I'll pay the cost every-time. Service: 5/5 I've order from this place twice, both through the stores own delivery service. Oddly, I'm not sure if they charged me a delivery fee but on Uber I think it's free after a certain amount. They have bilingual servers and if the takeout server doesn't speak English they certainly understand and we communicate through our range of understanding each other's tongue. Haha. The food has always come as I've asked and relatively fast! Food: 5/5 both times I ordered 3 Tinga tacos and a quesadilla. the portions of my tacos fillings hasn't been cheap yet! My boyfriend and I come here every year for cinco de mayo as that is the anniversary of our first date. We have always enjoyed the food except for the fajitas. The guacamole is fresh and tasty but don't be fooled, whether you ask for the guac mild, medium or hot, it is always spicy. My favorite to eat is the bistec encebollado with rice and black beans. My boyfriend likes the tacos and the torta with chicken. For dessert we have the tres leche for the first time and it was amazing! For drinks we loved the horchata and the sangria was divine. Strong in the best way. The only complaints we have are that the staff isn't so friendly and it always takes a while to get your food since they are short staffed. The South Bronx has quite a few excellent Mexican spots, and it's hard to figure out which is best. I used to favor Mexicocina, but a few years ago, this place updated it's decor (it used to be a bit dark and divey) and really upped their chiles rellenos game. I'm vegetarian, so I can't speak for the meat, but all my omnivorous friends have given great reviews. My favorites are the flor de calabaza taco, flor de calabaza quesadilla (great hand made tortilla!) and the chiles rellenos. A warning: if you get anything with the hand made tortillas for take out, you'll be missing out on how great it tastes fresh. It's still good, but just know that you need to sit down to get the real quality experience. The decor is bright, and they always have music going on the jukebox and football on the TV. The space is NYC small, but they have extended it with some mirrors. They have a bar, but it usually seems to be more occupied by take-out orders than sitting patrons. The prices are great too. Generally, paying $10-$15 here on food will get your stomach full and give you leftovers for tomorrow. They have the usual beer selection you'd expect at a Mexican place, and the Micheladas are great. Not sure if they'll keep it up after COVID restrictions are down, but they have a booth outside that gives pretty good privacy, well separated tables, and has some of the usual decor. read more

I don't know if they switched owners but after I went back after many years, the food and service was horrible. First of all, the tacos were pretty bland. My fiancé ordered chicken tacos and they tasted very plain. I ordered green enchiladas, which was ok.but I noticed my plate had red sauce and that wasn't my food since I ordered green enchiladas. I was turned off by that. Also, the horchatas were way too powdery. I'm not sure how that happened. Service? The waitress was rude and not friendly at all. I stopped by here as part of the Bronx leg of one of my NYC food tours, and I ordered Chorizo Taco. After all, who doesn't want some hot, salty Mexican sausage in their mouths? Am I right? The tacos were excellent. Some of the best I've found in NYC, and certainly my favourite that I've had in the Bronx. Don't be fooled by the rocks that I've got, I still, I still food tour in the Bronx. Used to eat a little, now I eat a lot. No matter where I go you know I love Chorizo. My fave Mexican in The Bronx is over at El Atoradero, but this place is right up there, and for tacos, I wouldn't recommend anywhere in the area more highly. I popped a lot of cherries this week with my visit to Xochimilco in the South Bronx. First ride on the 2 train, pretty fast! First visit to the Bronx solo. A bustling neighborhood of discount stores and bodegas greeted me on my walk up Melrose avenue. My baggy sweatpants were definitely welcome on site! And finally....some authentic Mexican food, baby this was no taco bell Xochimilco is the real thing! Intrigued by Baron Ambrosia's adventures on the show Bronx Flavor (google it, it's an entertaining program!), I headed up to this south Bronx resto in search of good eats. It's a small family run operation, clean and hospitable with a jukebox blaring away Mexican pop in the corner. Perusing the colorful menu, I settled on a trio of tacos: chorizo, tongue and carnitas. What struck me most about the tacos was the quality of the corn tortillas employed: fresh, hot and a tad sweet, they were the perfect vehicle to shoulder the large amount of filling inside. The tongue was steamed and tender although it could have used a little more seasoning. Ditto for the carnitas, though crispy and moist, it seemed a bit bland. However, the best of the bunch was the chorizo, nicely charred crumbles of savory sausage-a seductive layer of meat mixing in beautifully with the queso blanco and salsa. For dessert, I take an order of fried bananas with whipped cream a request that causes some concern in my server as I barely managed to finish my ginormous tacos. Ahh well, life's short might as well eat. They come several minutes later, expertly flash fried. They are soft and sweet, the perfect ending to a good meal. But wait-it doesn't end there. I also take home a breaded chicken cutlet cemita ($6) for lunch the next day. It comes in a fluffy toasted sesame bun brushed with a spicy chipotle sauce. The innards consist of a thin chicken cutlet, avocado, onions, tomatoes, fresh cheese and papalo. The papalo is the key money ingredient, it's minty coriander type herb that lends a sharp coolness to the sandwich. I'm converted as a fan of cemitas forever! So if you're in the area or if you're looking for some off the beaten path eats, consider Xochimilco. There's lots of variety on the menu, their squash blossom and huitlacoche quesadillas have piqued my interest for future visits. I have one problem about the pricing, the tacos while hefty are featured on the menu as $2.50 yet when I was settling my bill I noticed that they were priced at $3 a pop. The server's response was that this was due to the the added cilantro and onions. Whoa! Was I just the victim of some gringo tax? read more

There are times in this city when going to a new restaurant feels like you're traveling to a foreign land. My recent journey to Xochomilco felt like such a time. Located in the South Bronx (aka Sur Del Bronx), Xochomilco is named after the famed floating market in Mexico City (DF) but it specializes in comida (cuisine) from the region of Puebla, Mexico. In true Yelp fashion, I heard about this place from my amiga Deanna W., a BC native who knows good food and wrote the first and only other review for this joint. It was a Sunday afternoon when I arrived, and the place was busy but not packed. I was the only gringo in the house -- here was a place where I can easily practice my espanol without feeling self-conscious. As it was my first visit to Xocho, I was tempted to try the mole enchiladas. The mole of Puebla is renowned, and I can only imagine how tasty the version of Xochomilco is. But I am like a crack addict when it comes to tacos, so I ordered tres, mi amigos: carne asada, al pastor and chorizo. Ahhh, perfecto. Hay buenesimo, muy delicioso. The steak taco was perfectly spiced, the al pastor had the juicy sweetness, and the chorizo enticed with its smoky flavor. Oh man, these were the best tacos I've had in the city. I loved them all like equally, as if they were my bambinos. While I enjoyed my meal, an overhead TV tuned into a Yankees game (the Stadium is only a few blocks away), and one of the cute waitresses started playing some tunes on the vintage jukebox: songs of love and passion, Mexican melodies from the heart. Songs about my torta to go. As I sipped on a cold Bohemia, I thought back to similar meals that I've enjoyed in places like Oaxaca or Zihuatenejo. After growing up in California, I've lived in New York for 17 years. In that time I've looked for good Mexican food all over New York, yet not until last night, when we went to Xochimilco Family Restaurant did I discover throughly great, California worthy, Mexican food. Let's start with the guacamole. I asked for the guacamole to be spicy, really spicy. And boy did they deliver! The perfect blend of creamy and chunky, spicy guacamole was quickly served with awesome chips on the side. Paired with a great glass of Horchata and I was in heaven. But this review doesn't stop there. We also ordered Nachos con Pollo and bistec tacos. A mounding plate of nachos arrived, with toppings throughout. Similarly, the bistec tacos were generously filled on double corn tortillas, topped with onions and cilantro. Two salsas are brought to your table. I only had a chance to use the red one, well spiced but not so much to overwhelm the food. Very clearly they use fresh, quality ingredients. I had eaten so much by this point I wanted to say no to dessert, but decided to go for it. Unfortunately they were out of flan, and fortunately they were out of flan, because I tried a dessert new to me, Tres Leches. One bite in I had a new favorite and was suddenly hungry again. I love this place but yesterdays order was a mess. I'm not sure if it was the staff working yesterday or what went wrong. First my order was placed 20 minutes before picking up and when my husband got there they said the order just came in and that we only had called 5 minutes ago so we waited awhile. Then my order was missing 1 rice and 2 beans. The lady called me saying she messed up the orders and I could go pick them up again. By this time I was already far so I chose not to pick it up. Then I got home and opened the order and the chicken flautas had absolutely nothing on them. They were plain chicken flautas - missing the lettuce, sour cream, cheese, onions. Started with the freshly made--you can choose how spicy you want it--guacamole and chips: perfectly ripe and flavorsome avocados, prepared just right so that they're chunky but with just enough mash to make a nice thick sauce. Medium spicy chicken mole poblano was rich, but the sauce had a faint medicinal undertone and the chicken was a bit overcooked. Not bad, probably authentic flavor-wise, but won't order again. Came with ok yellow rice and tortillas, and tasty black beans. Will return for the guacamole and to try some other dishes. My second visit decided to go for something light: the Caldo de pollo =chicken soup which came with chunks of chayote and one solitary piece of potato. The clear broth was good, the meat-- again--overcooked. The guacamole that I had this time around was tasty but didn't have the same textural variation: it had a smoother consistency and fewer pieces of tomato. Guess the avocado was riper. On this visit I decided that the chips here are a bit greasy and the tortillas bitter. Oh well. read more

We had the barbacoa de chivo, cabeza and lengua tacos, guacamole and a chicken dish with green sauce and pumpkin seeds -- all were amazing. For those citing "gringo taxes," call us skeptical. The first time we were here (I am Asian-American, my husband is white), we ordered take-out, and the son told us that his mother wanted us to try their lentil soup. They gave us a large container for free. The menu lists $2.50 tacos, but if you want them with cheese, lettuce, crema and tomatoes, they are $3.00.
