We all are suffering with inflation, so when we spend money on food, we want it right. My boyfriend and I went to check out El Sarape. They served salsa and chips. The salsa was just tomato sauce with a pinch of red pepper. We didn't like it. We asked for Verde sauce. The waitress gave us a ketchup bottle of Verde sauce. The Verde tasted terrible. It tasted like paint thinner with pepper. We asked for a red pepper sauce. Again, provided a trashy ketchup bottle with pepper sauce. Tasted terrible. Our meal came. I ordered 3 taco dinner. Steak. The meat was so chewy, I could not enjoy it. The beans were canned beans without doctoring up. The rice had no taste. The entire meal for both of us was terrible. Will never eat there. read more

El Sarape is my go to place for Mexican. I have been their numerous times and their food is consistantly good. I have had the enchiladas, burrito, fajita, and quesadilla, all veggie of course, and all are good. At many Mexican restaurants if you order veggie fajitas they are usually dry and flavorless. I've been here several times, I've heard them use the microwave before (noise of microwave beeping and slam of microwave noise) and when I receive my rice and beans they are piping hot. I did not hear the microwave the last time though. Flavor: NOT MEXICAN authentic food. The ranchero salsa taste like tomatoes and it's very watery or watered down. The cheese they use is not Mexican. It tastes like cheap low fat mozzarella freezer burned cheese. On the beans they add American style cheese on top, not American slice cheese, but Orange and white cheese mixture something I've never seen in Mexico or Mexican restaurants. Very bland overall. Chips and salsa are free, they are warm and fresh but wasn't a fan of it. Our family won't be back. read more

Just had dinner from El Sarape for 9 people and it was delicious! We had chicken tacos, taco salad, cheese dip, cheese quesadilla, Mexican corn (off the cob), chicken quesadilla and several other things. As a fan of Mexican food I will say this was some of my favorite especially the different types of cheese dip. I highly recommend this restaurant and will no doubt be coming back here next year when I make my way through. read more

I ordered food for delivery via Uber eats, ordered shrimp cocktails, orchata and the cocktails came with saltines, all of these were spoiled and stale, tasted disgusting, expensive food to have to throw away, this place obviously do not care about the customers safety, how can you serve spoiled food and risking poisoning, food obviously not fresh, stay away from this place, no safe to eat here, can't rate negative stars cause they r not available read more

First time there !!! margaritas are good I had a carne a la tampiquena was good especially those potatoes they add I didn't really like the enchilada that was added. I wish I had read their reviews before going there. Will not be returning. First, I came in alone and with a book (hint hint), and even though there are only 5 tables in use, the girl seats me next to the table with 8-10 people, and a crying baby. Needless to say, I didn't get much studying done. The salsa is not very flavorful, and the pico de gallo is 75% onion. Not good. I ordered the Tamales plate, which means 4 of the driest tamales I have ever eaten, and a plate of dry rice and beans. The tamales were so dry that not even the husks were wet/moist anywhere. I had to put the pico de gallo juice on it, just to give them some texture to tamales. And finally, for flan, it's like hard jello. Not creamy, not tasty, not good. Awesome lunch buffet. I was a skeptic at first, but yes - Mexican on a buffet can be good. A nice variety of fillings and shells/tortillas. Don's miss their chicken tenders - wonderful breading, all white meat. The best chicken fingers ever! And the little fruit filled desserts melt in your mouth! I went in for the lunch buffet, and with the exception of the enchiladas, was very unhappy. Other reviewers hit the nail on the head when they said bland. Even the chips and salsa didn't have any flavor. The meat on the buffet was tasteless and the beans were like water. I went there a year ago and thought it was great. This is Wisconsin Mexican. It's edible, and probably a step above Taco Bell. Big appetites will appreciate the lunch buffet, which includes several styles of meat (beef, chicken, and pork), enchiladas, and desserts. Tortillas are warmed and served table side. My favorite from the buffet was probably the dessert taquitos--flour tortillas filled with apple pie filling and deep fried. Beverages- They apparently have a full bar. My mom and I ordered margaritas, which were quite obviously from a mix and weren't strong at all. Last I checked, lime juice isn't neon green. I probably wouldn't return on my own, but it's nice to know that Wisconsin is expanding their horizons. read more

My quest for Kenoshas best burrito took me here. It was not an authentic tasting Mexican burrito. American version of a burrito to appeal to the masses is more like it. My fiance and I came in for lunch hoping to vet some good Mexican food as all the rating were good. BUT the food was horrible I ordered the flautitas and the beef was nasty, the guacamole on top was tasteless. He ordered steak tacos and the steak was over cooked and had no seasoning and the beans were tasteless, you could tell they came out of a can...the green sauce tasted just like jalapeño juice, way too hot and I wasn't warned, the red sauce tasted like medicine according to him. My original go to for good Mexican food. You can find lots of locals here having dinner which says a lot. The food is good here and the menu is big. There's something for everyone! I find the food can be inconsistent visit to visit. Wait staff are quite competent but not friendly, even though we go there frequently. They have 2 kinds of salsa and their guacamole is good, but not fantastic. The rice is flat boring, and the beans are - well, refried beans. I can't even begin to explain how horrible this place is! When I walked in they were so unorganized! Chaos everyone like they couldn't handle orders. Worse food ever! Worst customer service ever! When I asked to check my order the front desk lady said no that everything is right that she packed it! So we get home and the order was completely wrong. I called to inform them and they wanted me to bring the 10 tacos back. I told her that I wasn't going to bring food back and forth and that I was just letting them know that this could have been fixed when I was there if they would have let me checked it. The front desk lady hung up on me when giving a attitude when I finally got to speak with the owner she was interrupting me when I was talking to me and said it's not her issue. Busy place. The atmosphere of a little loud but that's to be expected as busy as they were. Johanna my server was friendly and fast and took really good care of me. I had the chicken enchiladas with the mole' sauce. Probably the best mole' sauce I've ever had. Most tend to be a bit watery, but this one was thick and flavorful with a bite to it. My personal favorite is their beef tongue tacos with sliced lime, cilantro, and onions. Simple and delicious. On a few occasions I have sampled their enchiladas and mole which were both great as well. They also make their own hot sauce available by request only, which is a wonderful. I had queso fundido and a peach margarita. The margarita wasn't even stirred through because the juice was warm in the middle and all the liquor was on the sides, wow, lazy. As a family, we used to frequent this restaurant at least twice a week. The food from the kitchen is wonderful. We haven't been there for at least 6 - 8 months now. The place just does not feel clean anymore. The woven placemats are dirty from other people. The chip baskets don't seem clean. The tortilla baskets are dirty. The real clincher though was the lunch buffet. Kids were running around and sticking their bare hands in the food at the serving tables. They were grabbing out food, eating and reaching back in with their bare hands. Gross. We told our server and their parents -- and no one seemed to care. We haven't been back since. The owner is really nice and so are some of the servers. We might go back sometime and order from the menu. We will NEVER eat from the buffet again. YUK!! Food ordered from the menu has always been very good. We have problems with the cleanliness of the restaurant overall though. Today I called at least 5 times, every couple minutes just like the voicemail asks and no one ever answered. Okay, so the phones are busy. The voicemail also says they are available on door dash, so I check door dash, and door dash is disabled. Okay, maybe they don't wanna deal with all the online traffic. The voicemail also says they offer online ordering on their website. Great, so I check that, and lo and freakin behold that feature has also been disabled. Pretty good for a Mexican place ! Great service which is always a plus. I ordered pork tacos (median style ) , they were pretty good, a bit on the dry side though. (Like pork wasn't moist ). My BF had the biztek ranchero. It had good flavor. One kid has chicken quesadilla. Was good. Other kid had Cesar salad. Also pretty good.
