First off I just wanna say I rarely leave reviews for businesses but I wanted to share my experience with el Sobrante Cyclery. I'm from Omaha and was visiting the Bay Area with family and really wanted to go to a legitimate bike shop in CA. Admittedly, I was intimidated going because I've never been to CA and wasn't sure what to expect. Sometimes, in my experience, dudes can be rude and condescending to anyone who has basic or little knowledge about all that goes into BMX. However, that was not the case with el Sobrante. I went in and was immediately impressed with the handlebar selection, stems, sprockets, tires, bar grips and even hella compete bikes for sale. Plenty of great brands to choose from (my only suggestion would be to stock less GT, unless it sells it Cali which it probs does so ignore me). I ended up getting a set of Rant cranks and some Shadow Vultus SG bars. Both in chrome. Very stoked. Chatted with the First Gentleman that helped me for a bit and even got a YouTube channel to one of his buddies...then it was time to come back home to NE. Went to pack up my bars and realized they weren't gonna fit. No matter what. I went back in and they couldn't refund me bc I lost my receipt some how (however, the 2nd gentleman that helped me tried many, many ways to refund me and help me, we simply ran out of options) so I exchanged my cranks and bars for a set of Stevie's from Primo. Unfortunately they are 24mm spindle and I was provided a 22mm and didn't realize it until I was back home. I called them up expecting them to tell me "tough luck" bc I was back in NE and they could have easily said "eh, oh well" but instead I explained what happened and was told they'd need to talk to the boss and they'd call me back. So I waited 5 business days and after not hearing anything back, went ahead and just bought my own 24mm bracket from S&M...wish I woulda waited a little longer bc they did end up calling me back today 7/24 and are sending out a new 24mm bracket for free Although, the first time I bought the primo cranks, they should have came with 24mm primo BB, not sure why it didn't? Also, I had to pay for the incorrect 22mm BB they incorrectly gave me, so I've bought 2 Bottom Brackets and now have a "free" one coming. I spent $80 when I didn't need to in the end. I guess, the more I think of it, I intended this review to be mainly positive, as they did do what they said they'd do in the end and did try to help me the best we knew how. I guess I was just frustrated I couldn't use the cranks I over paid for when I got home and bought a bracket the same. day they called to tell me one was gonna be sent haha. But all in all I'd recommend for sure. Great dudes, really nice and easy to work with and I want to support them. It was a weird situation with my cranks and I'm happy it's all worked out. just bought myself a sweet ass stranger spitfire BMX bike here, bro. You need to go here if you wanna get something cool and go to a sweet ass bike shop that's clean and has a proprietor that knows what's up and oh my God I walked into it the first time and the smell of just clean rubber tires hit me and it smelled like a real BMX bike shop or just a real bike shop. I loved it. Oh my God can the proprietor was so awesome and his helpers like Rodrigo and shit were awesome dude hook me up he'll do the same for you. I'm sure you will not regret making the trip out to L to Brontë. It's not that far away like from Berkeley and stuff which is where I'm at man love this place. Bought some pads here too. They were sweet. I can't go on enough about this stuff they just treated me right the prices were right. Each and every time the staff (I think one of them may be the owner) has been very helpful, not to mention selection and pricing are always great. I purchased a new helmet today and made a comment on how great the price was. The gentleman behind the counter said "well we got a really good deal when purchasing all those helmets so we like to pass that savings down to our customers". What a novel idea! Looking for a bike or wanting to repair one due to our newfound explorations during COVID? Well don't come here! I cannot even make up the ridiculous twists and turns with dealing with this place. About three weeks ago my bf dropped off two old bikes belonging to his father to get repaired. A couple days go over the specified date and the person over the phone seems to have "lost the paperwork" and would call us back when they find it. Next day, owner calls and says he was not there when the incident happened but a worker of his GAVE AWAY A BIKE WE DROPPED OFF TO GET TUNED UP TO ANOTHER ANGRY CUSTOMER (what sense does that make, I have no idea). Ok we can deal with a sincere mistake but how they chose compensate us was unacceptable. They give us a bike from the shop, two weeks in it gave out. We go to the peddler down the street and they tell us: THE BIKE'S FRAME IS 20 YEARS OLD and the hydraulics were all busted. Basically compensated us with trash to make us go away and hope we wouldn't catch on. I'm writing this as I sit out the car, it doesn't even matter what they do now (fix it or give us financial compensation). I'm so disappointed because I wanted to like this place but it's not worth the headache. read more

Since Summer 2020, I started biking again and that became my primary form of workouts, especially during the pandemic. Paul and the rest of the team were always friendly and efficient with their service and advice. I've brought my Cinelli here twice and both times I received exceptional service. I purchased a $1700 bike at The Pedaler Bike Shop, just a half mile from El Sobrante Cyclery, and have been back there multiple times to purchase accessories and for repairs. Yesterday I went in hoping for a quick lesson (we're talking two minutes) on how to get my tire off of the rim (for some reason it was super tight and I couldn't get it off to change a flat). The tech who greeted me immediately went on a bit of a rant explaining, three times, that they were way too busy to give a "tutorial" and that it wasn't going to happen today. Said he could charge me to fix the flat but, again for the 3rd time told me, that they were way too busy to sit down and give a step-by-step tutorial (he must have viewed me as a total idiot to even say that to me). At any rate, after waiting about 10 minutes I realized that this guy wanted nothing to do with me so I drove a half mile away to El Sobrante Cyclery and a tech dropped what he was doing and in literally two minutes showed me that because there was still a bit of air left in the tube, that was what made it so difficult to get the tire off the rim. Mind you, I've never been in this shop before and never spent a dime there ... but they helped me with a smile. What a gem of a cyclery. I purchased a bike here since I need the exercise to strengthen these old legs. The person, I think it was Ken, was just extremely nice and helpful. After I purchased the bike I realized I needed a tow hitch and a bike rack. Tim an extremely nice and knowledgeable sales person told me I could easily get a tow hitch installed at U-Haul. So I got my tow hitch installed by U-Haul and purchased a two bike rack online that I'd been eyeing. But because I'm an older female in her 60s I didn't want to fool with all the heavy parts, screws and mechanics involved so I brought the unassembled rack over to the El Sobrante Cyclery and Tim was kind enough to put it together and install it for me. He showed me exactly how to put it together and showed me a tow hitch lock and also a lock to lock my bike to the rack. These gentle souls were very kind and helpful. In the future when my bike needs a tuneup or repairs I know I can easily bring it to the El Sobronti Cyclery in the hands of knowledgeable and trusting people. Can't say enough good things about El Sobrante Cyclery and their fine staff. I bought an old Schwinn Varsity 10 speed (1970s) on Nextdoor cause it looked cool, complete, but was pretty beat up. I called around for a shop to give it a tune up and new tires. The few I called never got back to me, and a another shop I visited we're hesitant to take on the project. Found El Sobrante Cyclery via Google, called them and explained my needs. They said no problem, we can handle it, bring it in, we've been Schwinn dealers since 1957. They called me back the next day, all done and for a reasonable price. Just came back from the first bike ride, WOW, rides like a dream! STAY AWAY!!! I was a customer here for many years. No more. I am an avid cyclist for a very long time. I am a retired professional in my 70s. I am short and slightly built. I went to the bike shop last week because my tire was flat. While I was there 2 young men, about 25 years old came in. One of them had a lot of tatoos and a shaved head. While I was talking to the owner who was not Ken, I mentioned that I was 72 years old. The young guy laughed at me and started verbally abusing me. He said "Hey, Grandpa, you don't belong in a bike shop. Go home", "Hey old man, it's past your bedtime. Get out of the bike shop." "You are going to be dead soon". "Hey old man, you aren't riding in BMX". I said "What is BMX?" He then started laughing hysterically at me. This went on and on and on for about 5 minutes. with him continually berating me and laughing at me. Constant ridicule. He said to the owner about how I shouldn't be in the bike shop and mocking my age. He then approached me and stood about 2 feet in front of me menacingly and staring me hard in the eyes. I was scared. Meanwhile, the owner who was not Ken stood about 3 feet away and heard and saw everything. He said and did nothing. I made eye contact with Ken, who also said and nothing at all. This is just disgraceful. I am an old man who was repeatedly harassed and verbally abused by someone who was young enough to be my grandson. He just did not stop for about 5 minutes. Ken could have said something like "Don't bother my customer" or "Leave him alone" or something similar. He did nothing to diffuse this. Please don't go here. Both Ken and the other owner allowed an old man to be menaced and repeatedly verbally abused. INCREDIBLY LOW CLASS PLACE WITH OWNERS WHO DON'T MIND TO HAVE A LONG TIME ELDERLY CUTOMER REPEATEDLY VERBALLY ABUSED AND MENACED. THEY DID NOTHING AT ALL TO PROTECT ME. GO SOMEWHERE ELSE! read more

Very cool joint. You aren't going to find as involved a BMX place locally as here; you'll have to drive a bit otherwise. The guys there chill and down to earth, but willing to talk shop all you want.They know their stuff and seem to stay pretty busy. Things to know - if you're looking for the ever-popular (right now at least) SE Racing bikes, good luck. They never seem to know when bikes are coming in (fault - SE's for poor communication with their client stores). If and when they get some in, the bikes disappear instantly. Second - parking is a nightmare here, so be careful trying to manage the business traffic out front and the construction nearby. And third - they need to do a better job responding to social media queries. If you can post pics of what you've built or worked on, answer people when they ask you questions. Aside from that, get on into El Sobrante Cyclery, they'll treat you right. read more

Wow - I can't believe it. I've been a El Sobrante client for years. Just called up to get information about getting my bike repaired. And was totally insulted by the guy who answered, even though I has mentioned I was a long time customer. The guy on the phone told me they could give an estimate - and I explained that their hours of operation were difficult for me as I work everyday. I asked if I could drop my bike off at the end of the day, and have it looked at the next day. (He explained they only repair 5 bikes a day. I asked if I could be the 'first bike of the next day' since I explained again, my schedule is tight.) He replied "What you're trying to do is 'BEAT THE SYSTEM', and that 'He works too". Must be nice to be in a position during COVID 19 to rudely turn away customers. As I read other reviews I see I am not by far, the only person this has happened to . Stay away ! I normally don't write reviews but this place had horrible customer service. I was standing there next in line and they didn't even acknowledge me. I don't know if it was because I am an African American female and the customers they were interacting with were young male bikers. Guess I didn't fit the description. My husband called right before I left the house to make sure it was okay to bring his bike and the guy said yes but when I got there less than 10 minutes from the time my husband called and he said he couldn't take it because he already had 5 bikes for the day. They open at 12 and I got there at 12:45pm and I couldn't drop the bike off. This is the second time we've came here and I will NEVER COME BACK! I don't recommend this place to anyone. read more

The selection isn't the biggest but they have what you need to get riding today! Also, open on Sundays! Not even car mechanics are open Sundays.
