I can't comment on the food since I didn't get any. Service was slow from the beginning. I waited to be waited on, waited for iced tea, waited to order meal, (meantime, chips were crispy and salsa was tasty), then waited and waited while one couple that had arrived after me and then a second late-arriving couple were served their meals, then I left. Both appeared to be regular customers. but my one crispy taco? Really? In my 40 minutes there, four other meals were served promptly. It was our first time here. I ordered chicken puffy taco but they brought me beef which I ended up eating because the server didn't come back. My husband ordered crunchy tacos with no tomatoes, but they had tomatoes. He tried to remove them but 90% of the cheese came off with them. It was decent but not sure we'll be back. So I read some reviews and surprised that people mentioned how great their burger was. I decided to try it and agree it's delicious! I got the deluxe burger which had guacamole, bacon and cheese. It was so well prepared, with fresh toppings, savory, and large. Their fries were also so delicious. I had a margarita one the rocks. It was great, made with a strong pour and minimal ice. They have a nice outdoor area to enjoy when temperatures are right. read more

First .. food was good, Stop by for my lunch break and had the enchilada plate that was the plate of the day. Was the first in the restaurant and it almost took 25 minutes to get my plate. $15 for a two enchilada plate also they charge my credit card twice so with tip I ended up paying like $36.00. Located down-river from the square on Water Steeet, El Sol de Mexico is a great find for this Fresericksburg resident. The salsa is good (pico de gallo style) and the plates are thoughtfully prepared. The staples (e.g. rice, beans, beef tacos, enchiladas) are all of good quality. They serve cerveza and the fresh brewed iced tea is above average. Service is excellent and despite a bit of divyness (in a good way), the restaurant is very clean. Highly Recomended! read more

We decided to try this little place as we were looking for somewhere not too crowded with a patio. While the service was good, you can't make a place work without good food. I'm just going to be blunt. Not sure where people have been eating before to place this in the "must eat here" category, but you need to expand your horizons. First off, I've never had such a bad frozen margarita like I had here. It tasted like very watery strawberry water. I took both back. Their solution was to load one up with extra tequila and sweet & sour. That just made that one worse. They remade the second one, and as I watched, I realized, they had no clue how to properly make a frozen strawberry margarita. Kinda hard to mess these up. And when you ask for a Corona, dressed, you don't expect it to come back with chili salt on it. Now on to the food - the only thing good was the salsa and guacamole. None of our food had any seasoning on it whatsoever. Bland is too nice of a word to use. Not sure about the Chili Relleno. It was covered in what appeared to be pancake batter. My beef fajitas had no taste to them. Son's puffy tacos....again no flavor. There are many other Mexican Food places in Kerrville, and they are by far way better. I may be a bit jaded, as I live in a bigger city known for great Tex Mex. Really tried to like this place. Paid the bill, left the food and went to a better place closer to Ingram. Stopped here for a quick lunch. Due to dietary restrictions we needed something as close to vegetarian as possible. They were very accommodating. We were able to modify the fajita plate for two by adding potatoes, carrots, and zucchini. The handmade corn tortillas were amazing. The service was fast and friendly. Actual rating: 3.5 This little place has had many incarnations over the years--a gas station, a garage, a coffee shop and another Mexican restaurant. I've driven by it a number of times over the years so it was time to try it. As tiny as the place is, it didn't feel all that cramped inside; the downside was that my friend and I could hardly hear each other across the table and no one in the place was speaking particularly loud. Sometimes acoustics are just about impossible to fix and that's the case here. First came the usual tortilla chips and salsa. Neither were run-of-the-mill. Although not spicy hot, the salsa had a crisp, clean, balanced flavor; had it been thicker it would be closest to a salsa cruda. The chips were room temperature but were not greasy and had a bold corn flavor; they were a bit thicker than most. My friend and I both ordered the "Poquito de Todo"--a little of everything--plate. Two cheese enchiladas with gravy, a puffy beef taco, a chalupa with beans and piccadillo, and for sides, rice and refried beans. Of everything on the plate, the chalupa stood out. It had nice balance between the beans and piccadillo, just enough lettuce without being intrusive. There was the typical grated cheddar cheese but bonus points awarded for a sprinkling of cojita cheese which made a huge difference. The puffy taco looked great but sadly was just so-so. The piccadillo was lacking flavor and the tortilla had evidently been fried beforehand as it was cool to the touch and a bit tough. Rice and beans were standard issue as were the enchiladas although the gravy was quite tasty. The service was very friendly but with only the owner/manager as waiter, service suffered when the place began to fill. As for our table, we had no complaints. read more

This place doesn't suck in the sense it's offensive or anything but wow. I'll start off with the staff (the 2 FOH running the place). Both of them were really nice. The salsa as mentioned was delicious and after that, it kind of ended there. Our waiter was also the bartender and I think maybe his 40-ish-old son was the cashier. On drinks, my wife got a bloody Mary and said she liked it. I had the absolute worst margarita I've ever had in my life at the place. Made in a blender by someone that doesn't know how to make one in a blender (most restaurants have a machine even if it's small to not blend ice into a drink over freezing the actual drink). It tasted like country-time lemonade blended with some cheap tequila. First time I have ever not finished a margarita and I've made a few bad ones myself at home, LOL. I was already drunk though when I made a lousy one. The food was super mediocre. No seasoning and just super bland. I think this is a place the older crowd goes to because they don't like spice in their food. Basically, a senior citizen hangout run by senior citizens. Full bar though and if I had gotten there before the table next to me ordered a double Crown and coke, I might have enjoyed it more. We took over half of our plates back to our place, not sure if we are going to eat the leftovers. There are too many great Mexican restaurants in Kerrville, this is just not one of them. You try a new place and learn. I'll end it with this place is quaint in an old-timey small-town restaurant kind of way and they had good music playing. Chips and salsa are fantastic and this would probably be good to get some drinks except for crap margaritas and some nachos or something. Heard good things about this place. My friend said it was the best salsa in the area. She was right! Excellent flavored salsa with the perfect warmth--not too hot with fresh cilantro in it. Very homemade tasting. Came with excellent fresh chips. I ordered the mini tacos al pastor. Everything came out promptly. My tacos had a nice flavor, great accompaniments and the refried bean side was excellent. Our waiter was pleasant and just the right amount of attentive. The decor was charming. First off, what restaurants charge for extra chips & an empty plate for sharing?! ($2 for extra chips, $5.99 for sharing plate). The chips were baked, and the salsa was more liquidy than other tex-mex restaurants, but it was still pretty good. My boyfriend and I ordered small guacamole bowl and tacos al pastor. Guacamole bowl: 3/5, it was pretty average. Guac with the regular pico, nothing really stood out. Tacos al pastor: 4/5, these are 4 pork tacos on corn tortillas. It comes with cilantro, grilled and raw white onions, and guac. The pork is seasoned very well. Ask for limes to put on the tacos! This plate was $7.99, not too pricy for the amount of food you receive. We were stopping by while driving through Kerrville. Let me start by saying we had a large party (14) people and we arrived about 45 minutes before they closed. But there were only 3 other tables being serviced at the time. They quickly put together several tables and made room for us. We sat there at least 15 minutes before chips & salsa were brought out and we did ask for them right away. BUT I was told by someone in the party that a "Authentic" Mexican restaurant doesn't serve Queso... so I happily anticipated the delicious food that should be coming. We ordered a guacamole was was almost $8, I think. It came in a big bowl - but was "spread" out along the sides and there was hardly enough to make it a small bowl. It was only avocado and tomato, no onions, jalapeños, salt|pepper or lemon. Very disappointing. The tortillas are homemade and delicious. The food was just ok - definitely not something to write home about. They made my daughters- soft shredded chicken tacos wrong - 2 times!! It wasn't hard - 2 soft flour tacos - shredded chicken only - nothing else in them and double rice. 1st attempt hard shell corn tortillas with ground beef lettuce tomato and cheese - rice & beans. BACK. 2nd - hard shell corn tortillas with carne asada - no veggies - rice only. BACK. 3rd attempt - was right! The chicken was very bland - she said it had no flavor at all and the meat was tough. But it shouldn't have been that hard!! My enchiladas were fine - beef was better than the cheese. Rice was tasty and the refried beans tasted like they came from a can. My friends and I were pleasantly surprised by the wonderful food at El Sol de Mexico. Everything was absolutely fresh and delicious. They have wonderful puffy tacos and the best cheese enchiladas I've ever eaten. Their chips are fresh made and the salsa was divine. The mini tacos and refried beans were also great. I came here with my family; the chips and salsa came out immediately, and the salsa was fresh and delicious. We had a large order of guacamole, which was tasty and generous. I got puffy tacos and a tamale. The tacos were pretty good, spicier meat would have been even better, but there was salsa for that. The beans were exceptionally good, well seasoned and creamy.
