Absolutely delicious food, the queso with chorizo was perfect. I ordered caldo de pollo which was small and pretty average, hubs got the lunch fajitas which were very tasty, homemade tortillas and although our server was friendly they were packed and way under-staffed which I knocked a star off for. Last night we visited El Sombrero #6 in Flowery Branch, for dinner. The Service was great - Fast, Hot & Delicious. The portions were large and there was deff value in the plate. Our server was Kayling and she was amazing. She was soft spoken, kind, attentive, and helpful. During our visit I watched her interact with customers... some that were indecisive, some that were disabled, some that had small children... and there was even a moment where her tray of supplies was accidentally knocked from her hands by a guest in an isle way. She was kind and gracious - reassuring the guest that is was no big deal - all as she continued smiling, sweeping up, asking that guest if they were ok or needed anything ... AND handling her tables as if nothing happened. She was fast, very attentive to all her tables needs and she was by far the light of the room. Stopped in on a business trip because it was next to my hotel it was not great. Rice was hard and crispy, chile relleno was just a pile of ground hamburgers with 3 strips of bell pepper under melted cheese that was flavorless. I've come to El Hat ( Sombreo) since it opened , and in gainesville . Std mexican restaurant, sporting teams often here because its cheap, get a speedy with rice and a beer and some chips. With this location, they are slow, don;t seem to care too much , no rush, most servers are gone or texting or something. I'll come here for a mexican fix on a week night as not to have any rush and it's fine. Come Fridays or when large crowds are here, plan to wait, food quality is not really there and long wait for the check. Chips have been hit and miss- like em hot, and freshly made which i've missed last few times. Will continue to come once a year but need to boost up the attitude and willingness to show customers a good time. read more

This place has gone downhill SERIOUSLY. I believe its a local chain as there are 3 other open "El Sombreo's" in the area on yelp. None of the 4 are "claimed". I often think of that as a measure of how much management cares. There are also 2 more locations that show closed in the area. I have eaten there in the past but not for several months. It was average for the region then. Yesterday however I got served something horrible. More like VOMIT on a PLATE, photo added. It was the lunch special #1 Chili Relleno, Taco, rice, beans guacamole and salad. The guacamole wasnt fresh and tasted like ashes. The taco was basic and way over salted. Probably had 10 times the salt it needed. The main reason I went as I was going down the highway craving a Chili Relleno. What came was a plate that was nothing but unidentifiable liquids. Beans I guess were refried and very runny. The rice was to be seen nowhere. The chili relleno also could be seen nowhere. They took whatever and blended it to smitherines and poured it on the plate and that was a Chili Relleno and rice?? Nothing was visible except goo with some melted cheese on top. I tasted the goop and yes there was a hint of chili in there. It too was way oversalted and tasted like the taco. Evidently what they use to fill a taco also makes this dish! There was no piece of anything to be found other than the goop. Normally with a chili relleno you get a fair size poblano chili with white cheese inside battered and then friend. You ALWAYS should be able to see it! This was absolutely horrible. I live lived in GA/NC 23 years and the quality of Mexican restaurants here is poor overall but this tops them all off as the VERY WORST Mexican food I've yet to encounter. When the waitress dropped the dish she came up from behind, dropped it so fast over my shoulder and was gone like lightning. She was a Latina. She had to know it was horrible. I thought about making it known how horrible it was but hate to ruin other diners lunch. I paid and left. I thought maybe a manager would read a yelp review and that would satisfy me, but NO, it's unclaimed. This restaurant and Yelp have been here for some years so that shows how much they care. I try to be balanced in my reviews considering overly harsh reviews can hurt a business and subsequently the employees. That being said, this place is a solid two and this is my 2nd visit. The 1st was bland. The food was a C+ at best and the waitstaff looks and treats you as though you're bothering them and they'd rather be elsewhere. I sincerely felt as though I walked into someone's home and asked them to prepare me a meal for free. They were not rude; but darn close. The 2nd visit was on a Sunday afternoon and I sat for an hour before receiving my meal and the waiter offered nothing remotely close to an apology. He was robotic and indifferent through out. With the pandemic I understand business may be short handed. But not even offering an apology for crappy service is unacceptable. I won't come back. I'm done. . read more

I have been to this restaurant many times. You never know what to expect. The food can be horrible but you can decent food sometimes. The salsa is sometimes good but can be tomato water at times. I've watched this place go down hill over the years. The service is as bad as the food. The only reason I've been there many times is the convenience of the location. I stopped by for a late lunch this afternoon around 1:30pm. The restaurant was pretty empty and I was instructed to seat myself. Lunch menus were already at each table so I started perusing through the offerings. Lunch items ranged from $5.95-$7.50. Fountain drinks are $1.99 with free refills. I really wanted to try a tamale but it was only offered on Special #8, served with a burrito and choice of rice or beans. I didn't want the burrito so I opted for Special #7 ($6.25) - one chalupa, one Chile relleno, and rice. Service was a bit slow, especially since I was the first of 3 single diners that came in. I ordered before the other 2 diners arrived. I was the last to receive my food. I understand some things take longer than others but I just don't see Tex-Mex taking that long. But then again, I got a Chile relleno and those bad boys are fried so more time is understandable. I don't typically eat all the chips and salsa that's provided for a party of 1 because my entree comes out before I get to the bottom of the tray but I'm getting pretty close to it. My food finally arrives! I have about 5 chips left. I look at my plate and I can see: rice, chalupa and beans covers in cheese. Wait. What? Where's my deep-fried cheese stuffed pepper?! I'm looking around for my server as I dig around the cheese/bean mixture and I stumble upon....a pepper! I'm too hungry to say anything as I assume this is the establishment's version of a chile relleno. The chalupa was a chalupa. Can't go wrong with that. The rice was a bit dry and not very flavorful. And my cheese and beans? It was ok. There was a subtle kick to it, probably provided by the little piece of pepper that was hidden within it. Service was on par with other establishments of this nature but the food....very far off. Don't think I'll venture in here again anytime soon. read more

Very disappointed in the food quality and presentation. The chili relleno was a pile of cheese with maybe some sauce mixed in and one tiny chunk of the end of a pepper. The beef was salty and horrible tasting. They were out of Sol. The beans were basically what you would warm up out of a can from the supermarket. The salsa was quite tasty, but the chips were average. The guacamole salad was a bit of shredded ice burg with some diced tomatoes and a tablespoon of guacamole. If this is the food you want, save yourself some money and go to Taco Bell. The results will be the same.o read more

Please do not waste your time or money at this location. Out of all the locations in GA and I have ate at all of them, this location is the worst one in service, food and management. They are always slow. This last experience, I placed an order to go. I was very specific about wanting only rice with my meal. I also ordered beef nachos for my wife. When I got my meal home, I had beans with my meal. The nachos tasted old. I called the restaurant and try to explain the situation to the person who answered the phone but I was handed off to another person who started to take my order. When I finally made her understand that I needed to talk to a manager about my meal. The lady manager just wanted to argue with me and told me to "hold it right there. Nothing is old and beans were not in your order!!!" She kept talking how wrong I was and would not get a word in edgewise. After I stayed quite, she said, "well if you have a problem with the food, bring it back and I will have it remade." My question to her is why would I bring it back if you believe you did no wrong? To have them remake it wrong again and get old nachos? While I was waiting for the initial order, she and a co-worker were talking about customers in Spanish. We have eaten here several times over the years and the food is good. Tonight however, we arrived at 10:15 and they close at 10:30. The manager gave the server the cut throat and us a scowl. The food runner stood toe tapping next to the table the whole time we ate. If a place is open until a certain time it should be open. If not then close earlier. Dont take it out on the customer. The food here is horrible. I came here for lunch on a weekend day and ordered chilaquiles. I ordered green salsa chilaquiles and they brought me red salsa chilaquiles, but who cares right?! The meal was spicy but had no flavor whatsoever. I ordered them with two eggs on top and those were burnt. The one star is for the service cause it was cordial and efficient. It's not the worst El Som location but it's still pretty horrid. I went in today with my gf and I thought I was just gonna get something hard to mess up. Boy was I wrong. Taco Bell employees even understand not to do this. So I ordered 3 hard tacos. The first thing I felt after biting in was liquid pouring out. I'm not exactly sure as to what it was. Anyway I kept eating. By the time I got to the third all the liquid from the first two had leaked onto the plate. The taco shell was so soggy i couldn't bear to eat it. If you know what to order, this place could be your go-to Mexican restaurant. The choriqueso dip is to die for. Its Mexican cheese and sausage mixed together with fried chips on the side, and an extra side of heart attack. They have tex-mex AND real Mexican food options for the experienced foodies, or natives. I've noticed some others mention the service. True, the staff is not chirpy and won't give you fake smiles, but they will come to your table when needed. They pay close attention to a head nod or a hand signal, and the food comes out pretty quickly. The bathrooms are clean, but could use a little attention during peak times. Decided to try this place.....should have just moved on. The food is sub par at best. The good is not fresh when it comes out. The service is almost as bad as the food. Carne Asada came out and was barely warm. The meat had no flavor and tastes like it was on sale when purchased. No quality. The Taquitos Mexicanos were also lacking in flavor. For Tex Mex its fair. The ambiance is worn but entertaining. The service is great and the food comes out fast. On this evening we arrived 15 minutes prior to closing. The female manager was not only rude, she was embarrassing. I have never felt so uncomfortable about arriving later in the evening at a restaurant in my life.
