El Sombrero is your standard Tex-Mex spot that is located off of Charlotte Pike in a small shopping plaza alongside Wayback Burgers, WingStop and Little Caesars that sits in front of Walmart/Lowes. We live nearby, so this has become one of our go-to neighborhood spots and so far we have never been disappointed. El Sombrero has an extensive menu of multiple pages of classics, specialties, combinations and cocktails...definitely something for everyone! Additionally, they have great happy hour specials for their drinks...that Sangria hits the table every time we dine here! We always start with the classic queso. It has good texture and is decent, but it's not the best or most flavorful. I definitely coat my chip in the queso and then the salsa to get the best bite. For dinner I usually go for the Pollo Toluca, which is grilled chicken topped with chorizo and queso sided with rice and served with warm tortillas. I am usually a #1 guy, but this dish has me converted here! The chicken is always well grilled, juicy and plentiful topped with well cooked chorizo and you can't go wrong having anything smothered in queso. Drink wise we always order a 32 oz beer and sangria, as they are always on special! Service wise, we usually have a great experience as there is one waitress there that is phenomenal and we ask for her section at this point. Sadly our latest visit was on a night she was not in and it showed. Our server was less than attentive or friendly. Not the best showing for them. Overall, we enjoy El Sombrero for what it is...a local neighborhood Tex Mex spot with solid food, good drinks and decent prices! As long as we are in this area, we will certainly be back! read more

El Sombrero is pretty much your standard Mexican and Tex-Mex spot. This is not meant to be a disparaging comment, but rather a simple fact. The location is in a strip mall with a few other restaurants and offers what you would expect on the menu in a restaurant much like this. The staff here is extremely friendly and professional and the food is good. I would recommend what I had, which was a burrito. I'm a huge fan of Mexican food and this place did not let me down. All in all, it was a relatively positive experience and I would definitely recommend El Sombrero if you are in the neighborhood and looking for good Mexican food. read more

Walked in with 3 co workers to get our orders sat there for 10 minutes while the employees just stared at us waiting for someone to come and help. When we finally did get help they walked away after each of us as if more people weren't standing in line waiting for their food as well. There's nothing like good inauthentic Mexican food. I absolutely love it. Except this was only inauthentic. There wasn't really a whole lot of flavor going on, but the waitstaff was very nice, and the inside was cheerful for a gloomy day. I came for the vet first time the happy hour specials which included a $9.95 jumbo margarita. my friend ordered a beef taco and side of rice, and i ordered shredded chicken burrito and a jumbo margarita. when they brought out our food, my friend was given a shedded chicken taco, and i was given a grilled chicken burrito and what i thought to be a jumbo margarita. we didn't say anything about the meat being incorrect and continued eating. when our checks were brough out, they were completely wrong and charged me $30 for a margarita pitcher. i talked to the waiter and said that is not what i ordered, and that i had no idea what the jumbo margarita was supposed to be. he said because i drank it i had to pay for it, even tho there's no specific oz on what the "jumbo" is. this place took forever and the food after being messed up was fine at best. no thanks read more

We come here often. Typically come during the day and the service is always great. Food is served fairly quick. However, we decided to it around dinner time and the overall experience was sad and disappointing to say the least. Horrible service. Waited for almost an hour for food. Not sure about the reviews claiming that this place is authentic it it's good for what it is: Nashville Mexican food. I had the burrito California. I have no clue what makes it California. It wasn't the queso covering it or the lettuce inside. The salsa they serve with the chips was likely a close relative of the bottle of ketchup also found on the table but if you ask for the hot salsa you're in for a very spicy treat. It was really good and I couldn't get enough despite the burn. I would go back if the desire for a queso covered burrito hit while I was in the area but it won't be a destination. read more

I came here for dinner Friday night. He wanted Mexican and I wanted to try a new place so this was the compromise. Anyway, food came out about a minute after we ordered. Staff was very professional and efficient. I had the Tacos de Pastor - pork/onions/pineapple in 3 mid size tortillas (a little bigger than the "street taco"). I normally like my entrees more salty but I enjoyed it. He ordered some combo dish... and he really liked it too. Like Mat W. mentioned, their happy hours are from 3 to close Sunday thru Thursday. I had thought I finally found a decent Mexican restaurant in my area when I received my delivery here and enjoyed some pretty solid guacamole, but the entrees I received made me depressed about having to renew my search all over again and I guess it doesn't say much because guacamole is pretty tough to ruin. The chips that came with the meal were fresh and crispy, however the salsa was another salty stewed tomatoes deal that all the Mexican restaurants in Nashville probably buy from the same supplier, and I highly doubt it's made fresh in house. I ate here twice, since I was hopeful after the first attempt that the rather dry and tough chicken in the Entomatadas was a one-time mistake. I am too naive it appears, as the vegetarian enchiladas i received on my second attempt were even more disappointing. The main issue was that nowhere in the description of the dish (on doordash anyway) was it indicated that the enchiladas would come smothered in cheese sauce yet they arrived simply drowning in it. Since I have a pretty intense aversion to liquid cheese, I was unable to even sample the enchiladas and was only able to eat the bland rice and canned refried beans that weren't touched by the white goo. I really wish I could like this stuff, but I just don't and I'm sure I'm not alone in this. It's just really bad practice for a restaurant to add ingredients to a dish that aren't listed and can render a meal inedible for people with allergies or picky eaters like myself. It's easy enough to edit the text to say "covered in cheese sauce" so it's just unacceptable that this happened. Will someone please open a decent authentic Mexican restaurant in Nashville? Met my friend Anna here for lunch one weekday, and we basically had the place to ourselves. I like it when the food is good, the servers are attentive but don't bug you, and you can actually have a conversation and hear each other. All three were the case here. We had the chunky guacamole appetizer - yum. It's super chunky, not like a typical smashed up guacamole at all. Because of my spice-wimp factor, the japs were on the side, which even super spicy fan Anna was happy about because they are in season and were super hot. I had a California Burrito - really good. Covered the oversize plate hugeness draped in yummy queso... what more could anyone ask for? Nice chicken to other goodies ratio, and I think I even detected some celery in there... that was a first. (And yes, I ate it all. The diet can start tomorrow!) The restaurant is quite clean, furnishings and decor are typical Mexican place, but again on the cleaner side. I ordered two tostadas. They brought me a tostada and part of another tostada. They asked me how everything was I said not great and I didn't get a whole tostada. He went back to the kitchen and came back. He said that the chef said I was wrong. Excuse me. I'm paying for it and he's calling me a liar. I wouldn't go back to any of those restaurants. One of those mediocre Mexican restaurants that you keep coming back to. Let's be real. It's hard to find phenomenal, authentic Mexican restaurants in Nashville. El Sombrero isn't any different - it's honestly pretty predictable. But this place is good for what it is and they do it at exceptionally low prices. When a restaurant has countless specials on frozen margaritas and tacos, it's hard to resist! The carne asada plate was a typical carne asada plate - very filling and each ingredient being perfectly compatible with one another. This may counteract some of the previous reviews but everything came out decently fresh during my experience. While eating, my friend and I kept looking up at each other intermittently mumbling, "This is actually pretty good" and would laugh. Easy parking. No crowds. Full tummies for very little cost. 4 stars is the average review for El Sombrero and I would say that is pretty accurate. First off, if you think the only good Mexican restaurant is an "authentic" one where there is no cheese on anything and they serve nothing but grilled fish tacos, El Somb is not the place for you. This is a greasy Tex Mex style restaurant, and it excels at being one, but snobby Southern California Mexican food it is not (thank god). Chips and Salsa- Pretty good, chips are medium thickness, served warm. The salsa is chunky, not spicy at all, and generally refreshing. Cheese Dip- lots of options here, I went with the chorizo one and it was really good. A few other people in their reviews didn't like the plain cheese dip (communists) but given you have the option of getting cheese dip with meat in it and they foreclosed this option to get just cheese tells you everything you need to know about their judgement, or lack thereof-SLAMMED Fajitas- I got the mixed fajitas that come with BEEF RIB. Yes you read that correctly, Beef rib fajitas. Coming from Las Vegas, the literal desert of Mexican food, I had already gorged myself like a Lion on chips and cheese and then got an enormous plate of fajitas presented to me. I ate until I almost exploded, took a break, and then ate some more. The little plate of accouterments that comes with the Fajitas was pretty meh but as a wise man once said- you don't make friends with salad. I ate until i thought I was going to die, until I was seeing light spots in my field of vision, until I considered going to the bathroom and throwing up so I could eat more, I ate for hours and then looked down at my plate... I had only eaten like 1/3rd of the fajitas. Jesus. Take me now- it can only go downhill from this point Price- very reasonable. I would say the price per lb of food I consumed was like 6-7 cents. Service- ok so this was a little lackluster. Drink refills could of been more timely, and when we asked for random things like some lime or cilantro they took their time bringing it- hence the 4 stars. In closing, beef rib fajitas. read more

Cheese dip was meh; not a fan. It was too bland. Margarita was not very good either. Ordered chicken taco & cheese quesadilla. The taco was cold and the quesadilla was decent. We waited about 15 minutes on food and mine came out wrong and then cold. :( My husband ordered a chicken and shrimp dish and he said it was decent but not impressed. Won't be going back. Clean and on point! Many times when you go to a Mexican restaurant it can seem dirty with old furnishings and a dilapidated exterior/interior. Not this place! It's a medium sized place, but it reeks of quality and professionalism. Friendly staff and awesome Happy Hour (3PM TO CLOSE) with $3 margaritas and $1.35 draft beer. I ordered the California Burritos and holy cow that's a monster. Awesome flavor and great value for the price. Also, the enchiladas are pretty legit. Great patio! Only downside is it's located as a part of an outdoor shopping mall. You can hear cars driving by constantly one that patio. This is the only thing keeping it from 5 stars in my opinion. read more

Favorite Mexican restaurant. Consistently good food and friendly staff. My favorite dish is the Pollo Chipotle because they actually have chipotle peppers here. Other restaurants around the city have the same menu item but no chipotle peppers somehow. We're regulars because it's always good - and it's close to home. We get cheese dip every time. I really enjoy their shrimp Acapulco and their veggie quesadilla. Husband gets the pollo fundido. This is part of the Camino Real family of restaurants -- probably some of the best Mexican food in this area with lots of Murfreesboro locations. We just moved into Hillwood/Bellevue from Murfreesboro so we're bummed we had to find a new go-to -- until we stumbled into El Sombrero and saw it was a Camino!! We went here ordered our food, it came out cold. Couldn't find our server, had to ask a different server to find him for us. He came back acted offended that we wanted our food redone. Wouldn't refill our drinks. Our food never came back out. He dropped our checks off like a thief in the night avoiding any eye contact and scurrying away. We asked for a manager he said there was none. We asked where our redone food was he said we couldn't get it because there was only one cook in the kitchen meanwhile the rest of the restaurant had food still coming out and they continued to seat.
