I'm not sure how this place is in business. The only reason this is 2 stars instead of 1 is because the tamale was good. They had a deal on uber eats for $15 off a $16 spend, in hindsight that was a red flag. Chips stale and salsa bland, the food just had no flavor. Most of our order went to the trash. The rice and beans were edible after adding much needed seasoning. Toppings missing and order notes not followed. Couldn't pay me to eat from here again. read more

Although we have a "go to" Mexican restaurant, I really wanted to like this place. Seated fast, but although plenty Of open tables, we were put in the booth next to a large loud party. While waiting for margaritas we were Given a basket of unsalted chips and a bowl of crushed tomato with a hint of onion. The golden Margaritas arrived but apparently lime juice is not part of their recipe so it was a sweet something with tequila. Fajitas Mexicano for me and enchilada le crema for wife. Fajitas were a lot of food but greasy and only 3 small tortilla Enchiladas were drenched in the sauce, but the chicken was dry. Refried beans had a weird taste, like chipotle added to them. Was friendly when I came in and barely said hi back. We ordered a pitcher of strawberry margaritas which seems like it was premade and taste like total garbage. Terrific mole sauce. Tacos are delicious (pastor and steak). Consistently good food (we've been here at least four times) and the service is always welcoming and attentive ... with personality. Our waiter asked if we wanted dessert and when we said no, he suggested shots of tequila. read more

My wife and I dined here today for the first time. The food was excellent! The dishes we had were very tasty, fresh, and outstanding! My wife had the pollo Jalisco which was very good it was made with chicken, mushrooms, and green peppers. I had the steak burrito bowl, which was also flavorful. It was a steak burrito in a bowl. The salsa was very tasty, not spicy, just very good. The chips were also good. Our waiter was nice and very polite. The restaurant was very clean and every table and booth was full of people. This gave us time to sit by the entrance and review our menus so we would know what we wanted by the time we sat down at our booth. All I can say that this is the place for real Mexican food! Official review of El Sombrero New Lenox. Allow me to start off with... hahaha what a JOKE! First impression walking in. Same 35 year old tile that was in Pizza Hut, nasty grout lines. Spidey senses begin tingling. Second was when they served us complimentary individual servings of marinara sauce for salsa. Each accompanied by a 3- small diced onions and 3 tiny pieces of cilantro, but a single basket of chips. Don't go getting all giddy on me now, it gets even better still. The prices are high. So Senor takes our drink orders, I order my typical. Beam and Coke short no fruit, comes in a beer mug with a lime ‍. The culinary downward spiral continued with the queso fondido they served us so eloquently displayed its soup like viscosity. Amy and I both ordered the Special dinner. Oooh my GOD! in (Chris Farley voice) the single worst dining experience I've ever had!! A tamale, taco, chille rellenos, burrito, chalupa, rice and beans. Alleged tamales, Rock hard not even resembling an authentic tamale. Flavorless ground beef in the chalupa, burrito and taco. Definitely a lower grade of beef than taco hell (bell) Chille rellenos was a joke! Couldn't find a hint of that famous poblano flavor anywhere. Cheese utterly bland. First time at this new restaurant. The interior is new, having been freshly remodeled. The noise level is not bad. The colorful tables and chairs add to the mood. I ate the Carne Tapatìa and it was addictively delicious. My son and daughter had the Burritos Chicago, one had steak and the other chicken. They enjoyed them as well. Service speed is acceptable. I don't understand the mediocre and negative reviews. Sometimes I tend to believe it may be competitors that unscrupulous leave these negative comments. My experience today was excellent. I placed a telephone order for one Burrito Traditional and one Cancun Burrito. The Traditional Burrito was filled with tender delicious steak chunks, great pico de galo and the size of a small football. The Cancun Burrito also the size of a small football was filled with ground beef, chicken,rice, beans pico and sour cream. Both Burritos were outstanding. The order was ready and contained complimentary chips and salsa. Chips were fresh, crisp, contained just the right amount of salt and salsa was mild but tasty. We were greeted after a standard 30 second wait, seated in a booth, received the usual (but unsalted) chips and salsa. After reading the lunch specials, I encouraged my wife to get the enchiladas that had the red sauce. She did, knowing that red sauce on any Mexican dish is her preference. When the food arrived on cold plates (not standard for Mexican establishments), I was a little concerned, but opted to keep silent. My mini-steak burritos were average, but nothing special. My wife's enchiladas were a different story. After taking her first bite, she immediately handed me a bite, anxiously awaiting my opinion. After finishing, she asked "doesn't it taste like the smell of a horse barn?" Unfortunately, she was right. What was prepared was not what we expected, as the enchiladas had a spice in them that might be better used for scaring away unwanted pests. Ordered two different burritos and neither one was eatable. I had chicken in mine and it looked like it was sitting out all day and dried out. Don't listen to the negative reviews and just give this place a try! We came on Saturday around 2 and we were seated immediately, had chips and salsa & drinks on the table within 5 mins. We placed our order and the food was out in about 15-20 minutes. This is as exactly what I was looking for. They have a white cheese sauce that has been impossible for me to find here in the Midwest. Portion sizes are great, location is clean and smells fresh. The aesthetic is bright and beautiful with nice art, painted tables and chairs. As a New Lenox local it is amazing to see this building have new life breathed into it. read more

Heard a lot of good things about this new place. We ordered take out on Saturday. Ordered on-line and there were so many great choices. On-line order process was pretty easy. My wife and son both had Enchiladas Mazatlan which was seafood enchiladas. They both loved it and I sampled as well and it was very good. I had 3 item combination with burrito, Chile rellenos and shrimp taco. Steak burrito was smaller than most burritos but the steak was very good and the combo was way more than enough to eat. Chile rellenos and shrimp taco were outstanding. Place was rocking at 7p on Saturday and they looked to be fully staffed. Everything tasted great and it was a good value. Will definitely be back hopefully to dine in but it's a great option for takeout as well. read more

We got there and it was not very busy. Ordered drinks and our food, an hour later 2 of our 3 plates came out and were cold. Then the waiter told my son they didn't have what he ordered. I asked the waiter why it took an hour to let him know they didn't have his food and mentioned our food was cold. All he said was ok, I told him we didn't want the cold food. Someone else came over and asked what was going on so I explained and he said ok, order canceled, grabbed our plates and walked away and put the 2 full meals in the bin with the dirty dishes. This was my first time getting food from El Sombrero. We picked up the food and when I got home and opened my box of enchiladas verdes... I was slightly shocked. It looked like dog food. I have never seen enchiladas made like this. It appeared to be a soggy tortilla with cheese on the bottom with meat on the top. I guess if you just wanted a mush of meat it would be good, but this definitely did not meet my expectations. My husband asked for no tomato and no sour cream, which was put on his burrito and he compared it to a Taco Bell burrito. We will not be returning as there are numerous better Mexican places in new Lenox to eat at. I gave two star bc the guac was good and the chicken was seasoned well. read more

I thought this might be related to the one in Fox River Grove that I reviewed earlier but it's not. Went in at 4pm and they were mopping the floor so heavy smell of Pine Sol. After waiter mopped the floor, I asked him for a Dos Equis Amber and he brought a Lager, so corrected him and he brought the Amber with no glass. So interrupted his conversation with two of his coworkers to ask for a glass. He brought over a frosted mug which was appreciated, but wondered why he wouldn't bring it in the first place if they had them? He brought chips and salsa; the first small dish of salsa was not chunky but mostly liquid but got another which was a lot more chunky, so if too watery then try asking for another. Wanted a steak fajita burrito (with onions and peppers instead of lettuce) but none on the menu. Only had pork but not called fajita but something else. When it came it was so loosely wrapped that if I picked it up it would completely fall apart, so just opened the tortilla and ate it from the inside with a fork. Food was OK but nothing special. Waiter needs to bring napkins with the food so no need to ask for them and provide frosted mug with the beer. read more

We have ate at this place at least 3 times giving them a chance. First time was when they first opened, we ordered our dinner there and only got 2 appetizers, nachos and shrimp cocktail asked for limes they had none, understood for a place that just opened. Paid and left , second time carry out order I called on way home from work , got there and nothing they said I never called. I said yes I did I spoke to you he said we lost your order, so instead of calling me back right away had to wait for them to make the meal. Got meal home it was just okay seemed like it was just thrown together all over the place. Very last time ever was a few days ago , went in and ordered a carry out meal in person to give them a chance to do it right, had an out of town guest staying with us, ordered a chimichanga and wanted to make sure it had no cheese of course whole meal had cheese on it. I couldn't call back because they were closed so I called the next day and they issued me a refund of only a meal, I said no I don't want a meal I would like my money back, I picked up my money at the restaurant he was so upset he just tossed it at me with no apology my meal was screwed up.
