A strong four stars. This bookmark proved to be worth the drive on a Sunday afternoon where we enjoyed $5 any flavor margaritas during their Sunday through Thursday Happy Hour! I enjoyed the spicy watermelon margarita while my dining companion went with a traditional one. We tried four tacos. I'll list them in order of preference: Red Skull - No notes. This is a well thought out combo. Get this for sure. Surf Ninja - A little light on the shrimp, but delicious. Whippersnapper - Nice flavor combo, but ask for extra passion fruit slaw or pineapple to step up the pow a bit! Island Boy - Too spicy, but kinda in a nice way. It was yummy but also a little too much on the tongue. Chips were hot and fresh. Complimentary salsa was chunky and maybe not worth the space in my tummy. Service was top notch. Parking was easy. I'm not from the area, and I was in a Mexican feeling. I spontaneously picked this place to satisfy my palette. I arrived at 8:30, and the place was empty. It looked like they were closing for the day even though they are open until 10pm. The chips and salsa were nothing too extraordinary, for the chips were flakey, flimsy, but firm. Zap! has some unique taco selections that definitely stray from the traditional Mexican staples found at countless of other restaurants scattered throughout the city and burbs. I remember when I was a kid, when the first Taco Bell opened in our neighborhood (yes, I'm that old), and that was everyone's first exposure to "Mexican Food". Well, we've come a long way since then, and I've learned the difference between traditional tacos, and what is often referred to as "Gringo Tacos" (lettuce, cheese & tomatoes). I would say that Zap! Taco House has elevated the gringo taco to the next level, but sometimes more variety isn't always better variety. The Red Skull & Vigilante tacos were both very good, with the Red Skull taco being the only one I would make a return trip for. The John Popper and Hot Honey Crispy Shrimp tacos were very ordinary, for lack of a better word. Not bad, just not as exciting as their descriptions suggested. The chips and salsa were fine. The margaritas were fine. There was nothing wrong with anything during our experience... the service was prompt and friendly. The place was really cool inside - with a whole comic book vibe that was well executed and really fun. I think the main issue with Zap! is that the menu descriptions and the overall cool vibe kind of overshadowed the actual taste of the food and drinks.... I really wanted the food to be as good as the place looked, and as the menu described, and it wasn't bad - per se - but it was just fine. DELICIOUS!!! Oh my GOD!! Our waitress was super friendly and patient with my mom (who asks a lot to questions). And I just can't get over the FOOD!! I'm sad to write this review because we have been coming here for so long but the service is unacceptable. They seem to always be 2-3 people short every time we come in. Waiting 40 minutes for a drink order doesn't work. The staff is very friendly but obviously too busy to do anything about the time and accuracy issues with orders. The food is great but not so much when they don't bring it out when it's ready because they are understaffed. It's been a while since we went to Zap but so glad we went back to satisfy a taco craving! My husband got the Motown Philly and talked about it all the way to the parking lot. And then again some home. I went with what I felt was "basic" but the Whippersnapper shrimp tacos are THE best! I love shrimp tacos and order them wherever I can, and these by far are some of the best I've had. The amount of actual shrimp in a serving is amazing and the toppings are so flavorful. We walked in and was seated right away. Staff was very friendly and welcoming. Food was great! I had the red skull taco and a shrimp and hot honey taco. Also I had an elote. I've been here twice for lunch I really like it. You get a basket of homemade chips with salsa on the house. Very delicious. The fact that they have an extensive menu with different tacos and flavors is cool. Very tasty. I've had tacos and a bowl. My only complaint was in the bowl I was supposed to have charred corn but it wasn't charred but plain corn is fine. The restaurant has that bar/restaurant feel. Both times I was there there were two waitresses for the lunch crowd so you may have to wait a bit to be waited on but that's ok. You can also eat at the bar. The artwork is fun too. I would come here 1x a week for the past several years and the past few months the salsa hasn't been consistent, they've been out of chips many times, out of guac atleast 2 times and churros too. My husband refuses to go back because 1. Out of chips and 2. The most recent time he was there we waited 40+ mins for 4 tacos...there was only 3 other tables and 1 take out and she waited almost an hour. I'm not sure what's going on but it's upsetting. This restaurant just outside of downtown Mokena is outstanding . I love the old original Batman vibe from the 60's. They even have the original Batman series on one of their TV's. The main reason I love this place is their food. They have a wide variety of different style Tacos with crazy names. I love the skirt steak and Philly taco. The large margarita is huge. I had a frozen strawberry and friends/family had the lime on the rocks. Everyone enjoyed them. Well made and free chips and delicious salsa complimentary. The outside has a nice sitting area in a quiet part of the "downtown" Mokena area. Inside was chilly but that's what the alcohol helps with, right? TVs have sports and the 1967-1968 television Batman series playing starring Adam West. Apparently the restaurant name comes from one of those on screen exclamations the show was famous for: ZAP!!! Been here a couple of times and have to say it doesn't disappoint! First is the theming: it is comic book themed! The walls have murals of all things geeky which I love. One of the TVs always have the Batman TV series with Adam West. And the bar has pages from comic books in it. Super cool theme! The service is also really good. Water is filled which is my go to barometer for attentive staff and a gentleman came by and asked us if everything was good. The food is delicious as well! All the menu item names are also comic book themed. Last time I was here I got the Whippersnapper (shrimp) and Vigilante (skirt steak). Both were absolutely delicious. The second time I came here, I got the Aqua Taco (fish) and Red Skull (korean bbq ribeye). Those two were probably my favorite! It is a little pricey but since I don't eat too much, I thought the portion were good for thr price but that's up for debate. Overall, great theme, great food and great staff! First basket of chips and salsa is on the house. Chips were crispy and crunchy. Salsa tasted like they opened a can of stewed tomatoes, blended them and poured it in the bowl. No spice, no heat, no flavor. Ordered a Vigilante and All American taco. Vigilante had quite a bit of flavor but was ice cold. The All American was very good. Seasoned well and warm. My husband and I were so excited to try this place out. First, there was nobody at the door greeting us and there wasn't a sign to tell us to sit or wait to be seated so we stood there not knowing for a few minutes until a sever yelled from the other side of the restaurant to go ahead and sit down. We got drinks and ordered our tacos (4 total) we waited a really long time and she told us 2 times our food would be right out that the kitchen was backed up, meanwjile she didnt offer and refills on our chips and salsa or drinks. 2 tables came in each having 3 people, they all got there food before we did so finally we told her we dont want the food anymore we have somewhere to be, this was at the 45-50 minute mark..She says "oh ok" Then goes to kitchen and tells another server about our table and he walks over with our food, we told him we gott a go weve been here for an hour! They never explained to us what was happening and why it took an hour to get FOUR tacos so they took it off the bill, she waitress never came over to apologize and the other server never said sorry either. Went here last night with friends. We tried several tacos, they were all good. The margaritas were great--and huge! All in all, a decent time. Feedback for management: For the chips and salsa---put the salsa on the side--and not in the basket with the chips. While waiting for our tacos, we were given the complimentary chips/salsa. The chips were really tasty and the salsa was good too. The salsa was in a decent-sized bowl. It was placed in the basket--and took up almost 1/2 of the basket. There were not a lot of chips. We were 3 people....there were probably 18-20 chips in the basket with this kind of placement. We ran out of chips, and still had plenty of salsa left---so we asked if we could have more. I was shocked we got charged almost $5 for it. And we weren't told we'd be charged for a second basket. While it's a nice gesture to offer free chips/salsa---at the very least---fill the basket up--and put the salsa bowl on the side. read more

We have eaten here a ton of times and had great food. Unfortunately today that was not the case. I ordered one of their bowls and it was missing ingredients from the menu and they had replaced the Romain lettuce with iceberg lettuce. Half the bowl was lettuce. It was bland and when I asked when they changed the bowl I was told it's the same. I sent it back and yet the waitress decided it was still OK to charge us for the bowl. We asked for it to be taken off of the bill because it didn't even match what was listed on the menu and with an attitude, she turned around without a response or apology. Food--4.5 Service--1 This was our first time here. I really wanted to like it more, I really did. 1. When you walk in, it is unclear whether you are to seat yourself or wait to be seated. There is no hostess stand and no signage. Eventually, an older gentleman (bartender? manager?) asked how many and pointed us to a table. 2. The table had one menu on it. That was it. For 4 of us. No one ever brought any more. 3. The aforementioned bartender came over to get our drink order. We were still passing around the one menu to decide. We gave him our orders. A few minutes later, he came back to ask us for our drink order again because he forgot. 4. Drinks and chips and salsa eventually arrive, sans the water I asked for. Still have no napkins or anything else. 5. A server eventually shows up a good 15mins later and all she says is "Are you ready to order some food?" Doesn't say hi, doesn't introduce herself, doesn't ask us how we're doing. Nothing. She is one of two servers in the whole place, minus the bartender, and they both look like they are patrons--just wear hoodies/street clothes. Nothing that tells me they work there. 6. We proceed to try to order and they are out of a couple tacos, which is okay, but they are also out of RICE. How, as a taco joint, are you actually out of RICE AT 4pm on a Sunday? So all we ordered was tacos. Would have loved some rice and beans. 7. The chips to salsa ratio is way off. Need double the chips for the dish of salsa they give you. I asked for more chips and she took the salsa away with the basket, too. 8. We had to ask for EVERYTHING. Had to ask for silverware, napkins, water, soda refills for my kids, chip refills. These are things that are BASIC SERVICE. No one every came back to check on anything. We had to flag our server down every single time. 9. The only shining light here--the food, what we managed to order, at least, was good. They were very generous with the taco fillings and honestly I could have used two tortillas with my Red Skull taco. The Vigilante was also very good. However, what we didn't have was any silverware or chips to eat the taco filling that fell onto our plates. My son was literally eating his with his hands. 10. Had four tacos and two out of the four were great! The Nashville chicken was by far the favorite. The ambience is nice, and the salsa was great.
