Another visit to the original El Som, aka "The Hat", and an even better experience. This is a staple for me when coming to the 'Boro. We got a great server this time and the lunch portions of food were way more than enough to satisfy! The salsa was also perfect! I was shocked to see that our entire meal was less than $35 for fajitas, chicken nachos and two big drinks. I don't know how someone could rate this place low. My husband took me to this location for a weekend dinner. I ordered the carne asada and mango margarita. The carne asada was incredibly tender and flavorful. Came to Statesboro for a college football game- got into town late- got dark early around 6 pm. Drove from hotel & found this Mexican restaurant that was hopping. Like many others around smaller towns & cities, this restaurant stuck out as being a little unique. Similar to many I've eaten at in So. Cal., New Mexico, Utah, N.Fla., etc The food was really good. The chicken rice nachos (without the chips) was delicious. Use the fresh chips from table instead. The rice soaks in the flavor of the sauce. Our waitress was awesome- Andrea- very helpful & sweet. El Sombrero, or "the hat", is a great place to start off your night in Stateboro. I used to frequent this location at least 2-3 times a week for their drink specials, which were always very cheap, so there was usually an abundance of college kids hanging out in the bar area. Normally in any other town El Sombrero would be a great place to take a family; however, in this town I would not recommend anyone with kids to take their family in here at any hour of the day except for an early lunch. If you plan on going any time after lunch you might have your children be exposed to massive amounts of drinking and cigarette smoking if they catch a glimpse of the GSU students in action. I actually went to this location to start off a night of celebration for my 21st birthday party. Needless to say, all of my friends ordered me a copious amount of shots like the "Flaming Dr. Pepper" and the "4 Horsemen." I know what your thinking, and my answer is yes, those shots looked as frightening as they tasted. The food is typical of any other Mexican restaurant that anyone has ever eaten at. It is a little heavy on the stomach though, and may cause an unpleasant night if you eat here before going out on the town. read more

I had a female bartender serving me and she was so nice and genuine. She kept my water full and was asking several times how things were. Very attentive. Literally my favorite place to eat! I probably eat here 5 out of the 7 days a week and have been for years. Sometimes it's hit or miss but its never usually with the food sometimes the server might just not do to good lol, but overall, I have never had an experience or a meal that made me not want to return. Large space which meant an empty-feeling atmosphere as we were there for a late lunch, which is probably quite pleasant if you enjoy a bigger crowd of people and come at the right time. Weird... Definitely a first for me. The Queso tasted like burnt plastic. No lie, it had a taste of liquid smoke or possibly the bottom of a pot was burnt? I couldn't eat more than one chip. I've never, ever had "bad queso dip" before. Wasn't sure this was even possible to screw up. I will forever think of this restaurant whenever I smell burnt plastic. The Jalopeno poppers were LAUGHABLE. They were obviously frozen and had clumped together in the fryer. Some were still frozen in the middle (gross!). That's not the worst part. The lettuce/salsa/sour cream looked like it was second hand, meaning, I think another table finished their app and the kitchen just loaded new poppers on this setting and sent them out. One bite and I was too grossed out to keep eating. I'd probably pay maybe $2 for these in the frozen aisle at Walmart and they were charging $7. Joke. I feared for what the entrees might taste like. After waiting 45 mins for our food, I asked for a manager and asked to pay for what we had eaten so we could leave. He handled the situation like a champ, apologized and told us not to worry about paying. He even offered to box our food up for us to go. I'd rather go hungry than eat their food, even if it was free. I had only told him about how long it was taking and that the baby was getting antsy (try keeping a toddler still for an hour...) but I wish I said something about the queso dip and poppers. That was some foul stuff right there. Side note: My toddler spilled some water on the floor and their staff dumped a very strong smelling cleaning liquid all over the floor - it was unbearable. No "watch your step/caution wet floor" sign came out. I assumed the staff had nonslip shoes, but this definitely wasn't the case. People were sliding all over the floor, which made me really nervous because the high chair would've been right in the path of someone falling. read more

I am both a Statesboro local and a senior GSU student and I have seen the evolution of El Sombrero in this area. The demand has grown so great that there are now three in Statesboro alone. El Sombrero has fantastic Mexican food (although, I would venture to say it's not likely to be authentic and more Americanized) for more than reasonable prices. I can usually eat, including a drink, for around $6. I also can't say that they are the cleanest, but for the food and the price I can't complain. The first El Sombrero in town, also the smallest of the three, is on Hwy. 80 tucked into a shopping center that used to house a Publix. All of the locals know this is the one for the best food, but it lacks a bar of any real size. Therefore the one near the college on Fair Road and the new restaurant get more business from college students. So, if you're looking for food, not drinks, definitely visit the older one. read more

This has been one of the worst experiences that I have had in Statesboro for the past five years that I have lived here. We had a server by the name of Elizabeth who has the worst customer service attitude I have ever experienced. Even when we sat down her attitude was already off as if we had done something to her. There was a miscommunication about an error made on an order and instead of offering a solution to what happened she insisted on getting the manager involved without first figuring out how she could help the situation. The manager was very little help in understanding the concern that we had & backed up the waitress. When she brought the bill, she expected to be provided a tip but with the horrible experience that we had no tip it was warranted. She even declined to bring a to go cup of ice and stated "I don't work for free". I'll NEVER return this location. read more

El som is a Boro staple. There are 3 locations around town and every local has an opinion on which one is best. This one is my personal favorite. My family comes here every Saturday for lunch, and has been for as many years as I can remember. In fact, it's the only Mexican restaurant my grandfather will eat at, period. The food's really good. My personal favorites are the chilles poblanos and their quesadillas. They don't have the best rice and beans in town, but this place is really more about traditional tortillas prepared in various ways stuffed with meat and melty goat cheese. They also specialize in fajita and nacho dishes that are unmatched among the other Mexican restaurants in town. Their drink specials make this a great place for grabbing some grub with friends! I shouldn't like El Som, really, as I've aged out of their core audience, but I can't help it. Here are some things you need to know about the Hat: drinks are cheap and plentiful, it's noisy and filled with undergrads, this location feels like an undergrad restaurant, the food is great. It's dark and a little dingy, with a weird green neon light running the interior, but it works. Quick take: The food isn't as good as El Rinconcito, but they have a liquor license. I usually order the same thing every time I go (enchiladas rancheras) but I recently discovered their made-tableside guacamole. It is heavenly and it's really entertaining to watch the guac being made at your table. They move so quickly! The free salsa and chips are delicious, too. read more
