It was late and I was in town on business and staying at Hampton Inn just off I20. I was hungry and not wanting to go anywhere and there was El Taco was right out front so I Yelped them and they had decent reviews. Side note about reviews, when I see a bunch of 1 stars, I take a look at those reviews to see what was the problem and who the reviewer is. If you do reviews only when something doesn't go your way, that holds very little weight in my opinion. In the other hand, if the 1stars are coming from Elite members, then there maybe a problem. Anyway, back to the review. I checked out the online menu and decided I'd go with their #2 most popular dish, Crazy Rice. I got the one with all the meats. It comes with chips n salsa. Order was ready in about 15 minutes and 1st thing I noticed when I picked up the bag was it was heavy. Got back to the room and found out why. The large tin container was packed full of rice with queso and shrimp and grilled chicken and beef fajitas. I was packed. More of an appetizer, and maybe it is/was. I was able to eat about 1/4 of it using the chips as a spoon. I put the leftover in the frig for later. Not going to waist for sure. So next time I'm in Marshall, I know what I'm getting. My family and I came to visit family in Marshall and stumbled upon El Taco. Unfortunately, our experience was awful from the moment we walked in. When we entered, we asked a server who walked past us if we could place a to-go order. She simply pointed at someone else and kept walking without saying a word. After that, we found another employee and asked for menus. We said, "Oh, we want tacos," and the guy immediately responded, "Tacos? I mean, we obviously have tacos. You have to be specific." We just looked at each other and continued looking through the menu. Once we were ready, we let him know. He walked over to the computer to take our order. My man placed his order, then I said I wanted nachos and read the ones I wanted. After he explained that the beef was ground beef and not actual chunks of meat, I continued looking through the menu and ordered a different order of nachos that came with the meat I wanted. I asked how much it would cost to add sour cream and lettuce since the first nachos I wanted already came with those toppings. He replied, "Two dollars for the sour cream." We then told him never mind on the sour cream and lettuce. He immediately turned and said, "I mean, you just asked me to add it, and now you're telling me to take it off," with a very rude attitude. We explained that we asked for the price first because we wanted to know the cost before deciding whether to add it. Instead of simply removing it, he became very aggressive and hostile. At that point, I told my man, "Let's just leave." I walked out carrying our 3-month-old baby while my man stayed behind and asked to speak to a manager. The employee claimed he was the manager and then told my man to get out. The fact that he chose to become aggressive while I was standing there holding my 3-month-old baby made the situation even more disrespectful. I honestly have a hard time believing he was the manager because he is nowhere to be found on any of their social media, lol. The entire interaction felt very uncomfortable from the beginning. Based on the looks we received and the attitude we were met with from the moment we walked in, it honestly felt like there may have been a racial bias. I'm a Hispanic woman with a biracial 3-month-old daughter, and the way we were treated was completely unacceptable. Instead of wasting your time here, just go to Jalapeño Tree down the street--it's not even five minutes away. The food was really good. I ordered the Three Meat Nachos, my man got a burrito that came with two sides, free chips and salsa which the green salsa was a 10 out of 10 btw and it was still cheaper than what we would have paid at El Taco. This place is very busy in the middle of the week. There was live music. And, they looked like they were taking requests. My order was taken as soon as I walked in the door. The prices are reasonable. I ordered the single fajitas (chicken) to go. Once I received my order I was outside when I realized that I had not paid. I went back in to pay and the young lady who had taken my order had not realized that I had paid and was glad I came back. When I finally sat down to eat, I saw they gave me everything but the actual fajita tortillas. The portion were okay but there was a huge lack of seasoning, especially on the chicken. This place is a mediocre Tex mex with awful service. My boys wanted to take their mom out for Mother's Day and she got the worst experience. To put it short she canceled her quesadillas after she got them. They were soggy and looked like they fried the tortilla. We ordered taco salad and that was soggy. Will not be eating there anymore. We showed up here at 9pm on Labor Day. After spending 5 1/2 hours on the side of the road waiting for a tow truck for our trailer, my husband and I wanted a drink and some food that wasn't fast. The staff were super nice and seated us quickly. Our waitress was so sweet and helpful. My husband was delirious from hunger and the heat of the day and the waitress was so patient with him. The inside feels exactly as I would want a Mexican restaurant to feel. Cute place, good food and absolutely friendly staff. I recommend and would come back should I find myself in Marshall, TX again. read more

If I were rating on the chips and salsa and soda only, I would be giving 5 stars. The salsa had a great fresh flavor and the chips were perfectly crispy. The diet Coke was well above average. However, when the meal and check came things went a little off the rails. I ordered the "Make it your own" combo. I got a cheese enchilada with onions, the ground beef burrito, and the ground beef taco. I wish I had gotten the chicken burrito because the ground beef was very under seasoned. The red sauce on the burrito and enchilada was also lacking in flavor. Adding the excellent salsa helped a bit. I asked for double beans and no rice, but was given rice, which I tasted but could not eat due to the lack of flavor and, well I didn't even want it to begin with. I asked for onions on the enchilada and for a small side of lettuce to put over the top of the enchilada and burrito. I was charged an additional 0.50 for the few little pieces of onion added in my cheese enchilada and an extra $1.25 for about a 1/4 cup of lettuce, which is funny, because it seems that they just throw it carelessly onto the tacos and as a garnish with some plates. The place seemed clean, and the waitress was pleasant and attentive. I might stop in again if in the area and wanted to avoid traffic, but would not seek it out intentionally. read more

The food at El Taco has been good every time I've gone. Quesadillas, Nachos, Street Tacos and more. They have one of my favorite salsas for places here in town. There's that authentic feel in the restaurant with all the decor. All the staff is always nice. For those that enjoy adult beverages, they have happy hour from 5-close every day. read more

The restaurant offers dine-in, takeout, and since it's inside a completely remodeled former Wendy's, they kept the drive through. The restaurant also includes a large, covered outdoor patio for dining. The extensive menu includes tacos, fajitas, steaks, chicken, and shrimp. There are also lunch specials, appetizers, salads and sandwiches. For the first visit, I stuck with the basics: An order of crispy beef tacos. The were freshly prepared and arrived on a piping hot plate. Although the food had great temperature and texture, the ground beef was rather bland. So was the white cheese garnishing the tacos. And so was the complementary red salsa. Just bland. The most lively thing I had on this visit was an order of Tomatillo sauce ($1.99). Finally, some flavor! It goes great with the tacos and complementary chips. This spicy salsa should be offered complementary, as other local restaurants do. read more

The service was very slow and the food was subpar at best. The waiters were not friendly and the manager was too busy laughing with the help to take care of customers. Upon paying, my card was not returned to me, which was discovered an hour later after being on the road to return home. Upon calling El Taco, the manager said he was too busy to deal with it and call back on Monday (this was a Saturday). Upon calling back on Monday to have the card mailed back, the manager still didn't want to deal with mailing my card back and told me I should just cancel it. I stated I wanted my card returned and he gave me his number to text my address to for return. This has now been over 2 weeks and still no sign of my card. We stopped over in Marshall on a road trip and needed something quick for lunch. We were really pleasantly surprised by El Taco! The food itself was very good, not greasy, and very fast! We had the 1/2 Fajita Nachos and the Chimichanga, and both compared very favorably to what we're used to in the Houston area. We ate here for a Monday lunch a few weeks ago. It is a relatively new place and looks nothing like the old Wendy's that was here for so long. Inside seating is mainly booths with some tables. We liked the outdoor front patio far more with its 2 large fans and 4 TV's. Chips and red sauce are good....above average. We chose entrees from the more Tex Mex part of the menu with the Steak Quesadillas and the Enchiladas Rancheras. It was J's second time to get the Enchiladas Rancheras so he likes that item a lot. My Steak Quesadillas were good but I would try something else next time. Overall, it was a good lunch in a good setting with friendly service. They have a huge menu to choose from. Another restaurant that needs to be rated 3 1/2 stars. The food is pretty good, and I always confess up front that Mexican food is far from my favorite cuisine. But most dishes here are slightly better than the avaerage small town Mexican place. Salsa is good and the chips are usually hot. Beef fajitas are good enough, but not outstanding. Best dishes I've had are the chicken enchiladas. Beef tacos are also pretty good. Service is freindly and very attentive. One reason I can report on this business despite it only opening recently is that they do have outdoor dining. Six or seven tables out fron under a roof, but open on three sides. The staff is very conscientious about mask wearing and ample hand sanitizers are place around the restaurant. read more

I was picking up an order for my mom. Recently moved back and wanted to see if this was a place to go. They will not receive my business at all. Went to the pick up a call in order through the drive up pick up option. The lady did not see an order. She went to get this guy that advised that he is the only one that was taking the order and there was no order. So I called my mom on the phone and she said did a Mexican guy took the order I advised him of that he told "Me this is a Mexican restaurant do you know how many Mexicans are here". The reason I advised him of this is because he stated he was the only one that took the order well he was Mexican. Sorry if I should have said Hispanic but he wasn't of any other race so what should I have said. He was very rude. Well to say all this Left highly dissatisfied with the customer service. My mom then called back hit redial because I wanted to make sure she called the correct place. She did and he goes on to tell her she must have called the wrong number because no order. She said she hit redial then he goes on to apologize and say it must have been someone else. Wow this is l several things that went wrong with this interaction with my mom and myself. Can't review the food just the customer service. I will just go somewhere else. I review several places good and bad and it's been a while but seems that definitely deserved a review. They have lost more than just my business best believe. Stayed at hotel next to El Taco. I am a big fan of basic Texmex and I thought I would give this a try. My wife and I walked thru the door and we were immediately waited on and had drink order taken. Menu was extensive and our order was quickly taken by friendly waitress. Food came promptly along with the 2 for 1 margaritas. Food was very good although I would recommend avoiding the Caesar salad which was made with kale (waitress ended up removing the charge for the salad). read more

Deliciously grilled steak and nice side of bean and rice with chips and salsa. Beans and rice went great eaten with the chips. Food was served hot and was delicious. Would recommend.
