This taco food truck knows exactly what it's doing. Although their menu is minimal, the food is great. The birria tacos (birriongos) were perfectly crispy on the outside, loaded with tender, slow-cooked shredded beef, and had just the right amount of melty cheese. But the star of the show was the rich, aromatic consomé for dipping. It was so flavorful that I could have happily had a bowl of it on its own. We also tried the asada and tacos, they delicious too. The plate came with all the necessary fixings: fresh onions, cilantro, salsa, and a lime wedge to cut through the richness. I was waiting in line with about three people ahead of me. When it was finally my turn, the worker chose to help the person behind me instead, simply because he had called in his order. That person was allowed to cut ahead, pay, and pick up his food while I was skipped. There is only one line, so it should not matter whether someone is ordering or just picking up, everyone should be served in the order they arrived. Honestly very disappointed I was excited to see a taco truck in Simi and the line of people waiting must have meant it was good, but I didn't love it or even like it. The asada was not "asada" (grilled) it tasted almost like boiled sweaty meaty and it wasn't the traditional cut of meat used for asada (ranchera aka flank) It was desmillo, not only that but the birria tacos just came on a tortilla that hadn't been griddled, didnt have cheese, wasn't served with a dipping sauce it was just very bland very boring. Found this place by chance, and will be returning many more times by desire. I don't even know where to start. The food was great! My boyfriend and I tried every kind of taco (including the birriango - hope I spelled it right) and my favorite was the asada! My least favorite was the tripa (intestine) but even though I'm not an organ kinda gal I think it would've been bomb to someone who could appreciate it! Don't even get me started on the raspada tho. I saw Yelp reviews about it, had 0 idea what it was except for it getting great praise, and I was not let down! It's a shaved ice / slush drink, and I asked Joana what flavor to get and she recommended mixing guava and vanilla. Dude the guava in it was SO tasty and definitely a new favorite treat of mine. For a Simi Valley food truck, very good! After hearing the hype and living so close, decided to check out El Tacon snuggled between Ralph's and 76. I tried the birriongo, chicken, al pastor and carne asada tacos with a Guava drink. I was looking forward most to the birria tacos but were nothing special admittedly. Decent flavor but I have had better birria tacos in the valley and LA. The tacos were good with chicken and carne asada being my favorite. The al pastor seemed off and needed more flavors. They all ware pretty good, they took their time to prepare but it was worth the wait, I only could mean fresh made. The asada(steak) tacos and torta were yummy, but what really stole the show was the birria burrito, rich in flavor. Overall pretty good food for a quick bite. Their raspados do not look like the typical mexican raspados that you get in other places, their raspados look more like a shave ice, maybe after trying raspados from other places my expectations are a little to high for a raspado. Since I've moved to Simi last year I have not found a spot to get decent tacos. I started seeing this truck at night when going on grocery trips and finally decided to give them a try tonight. I'm soooo glad I did!! Finally a spot in Simi with delicious tacos and salsa!! I was skeptical at first by the look of the salsas but after trying them I loved them! The red salsa ACTUALLY has a kick to it. Something other spots in this area definitely lack. The green salsa had a subtle kick & delicious flavor. Tacos we ordered were asada, pastor and birria with cheese. All of them were delicious. Meat portions were generous so no skimpy tacos here. I'll definitely be going back soon and will get a raspado next time! They looked delicious. So happy this truck is here now. We would literally drive all the way to SFV to get tacos. Sure the hype gets you there, but oftentimes the kitchen cannot keep up with the demand and you end up with food that's presented poorly and lacks flavor. Then you find that the really good trucks to be in shady parts of town so you don't go there after dark. Ahh the dilemma of finding that balanced street taco. So, along comes El Tacon 118. Honestly, I didn't have high expectations. For one it's in Simi. Let's be honest this town isn't known to be open to food trucks much less one serving anything beyond burgers or perhaps a breakfast burrito. Nonetheless, this truck serves out some honest and authentic flavors. Keep in mind they aren't the fastest around, but that's how you know they're actually cooking your dish not just slapping it in like Chipotle. Speaking of which bring your tuned up taste buds because they are in for a real treat. And go big with the Birria and burrito because plain Jane tacos is not what's up. The taco was juicy and tasty maybe could have used a bit more crunch. While the burrito was packed with flavor. Keep in mind, this isn't for the feint of heart weight watchers crowd. This is full on legit heavy weight burritos so come hungry and treat your tummy to a tasty dish. All in all, I'd say this trip was worth it. Save yourself from going to the Valley and getting jacked.
