Went here on accident one night with a party of 10 (on a Friday at 7 PM!) because the restaurant we had reservations at lost electricity somehow. We were sat within 10 minutes. Our service was amazing. Our food came out hot and super quick. The chips were even warm! So yummy. I got the enchiladas and my brother got the fajitas. I will be back for sure. First, a little background... I'm a Director of Food and Beverage, and have been for years. First in restaurants, then hotels, and more recently country clubs. Born and raised in Medina, I've spent the last 35 years in Texas; Austin then Houston, respectively. Before I give my opinion, let me be very fair and note though I've experienced true, authentic tex-mex, I wouldn't expect the recipes and menu here in Wooster, Ohio to be true to form due to the varying tastes of people here compared to Texas. Specifically, I wouldn't expect people here in Wooster to like their food nearly as spicy as folks in Texas. With that in mind, I STILL have to give them a failing grade. "Authentic" is what they claim to be, and their menu says they cook from scratch. Not. We started with the "Queso." I put it in quotes because what we got was room-temperature (it should be at the very least warm, most always hot (not to be confused with spicy). It was runny like 2% milk and wouldn't even stick to a chip. Speaking of the chips, they were straight from the bag from the vendor. We sent it right back and ordered the "Flameado" queso, which is traditionally a very thick cheese served in an iron skillet heated under a salamander so the cheese caramelizes. What we got back 5 minutes later was the exact same runny cheese, but this time it had chorizo in it. They tried to fool the wrong people, which is why they are getting a very bad review. For an entree I ordered the Diablo Shrimp, which was supposed to be a very spicy sauce. It was nothing but a water, mildly-spicy "sauce" with 8 shrimp on the platter. I asked for corn tortillas, which were clearly store-bought. The girlfriend got chicken which was very-lightly salted but had no flavor. We both got Mexican rice which had a very weird spice. The salsa which they served was clearly house-made (which is a positive) but it was so watery, unseasoned, and bland (remember, I like spicy) that it tasted like nothing. We both got a good laugh out of the menu, which had options such items as "All items now available with Mozzarella cheese for an extra $1.50" Hehehe. I realize this is a regional thing, as they'd never offer that kind of cheese in Texas! :) I've also never seen fajitas served with "Pepper and onion stir-fry." The service was quick and the drinks refilled, but don't be fooled...if you want "authentic" and "scratch" Tex-Mex, go somewhere else. If you want something akin to fresh Taco Bell, this may be your place. read more

I am originally from San Diego and I had fantastic Mexican food but I never thought I would find anything closer to what I am used to in Ohio. This place is decent and the flavors are very good. I will recommend chimmichangas, tamales and enchiladas here for sure. read more

I keep going back to El Tapatio, I prefer the décor and the atmosphere to the other Mexican restaurant in town. Their pop and cheese dip is far better as well, however, I am just not a fan of their entrees. They use some seasoning that I just don't like at all. I eat here several times a week, sometimes with other family members. I can NOT say enough good about this place! The tasty food is more than reasonably priced; the portions generous: But the staff is absolutely gets a 10 Star rating from me!! I have repeatedly observed Nancy efficiently going table-to-table; expertly taking care of all customers; she's personable, with genuine solicitousness to her customers. - ALL of the staff is like this. Never have been a fan of this place. El campesino is way better and for about the same or less money. They use a weird seasoning on their food that I don't care for. Also, if I have to salt my Mexican food, it's not quality. This place does not salt anything at all, I don't think. I try not to go here. The only reason I've ever come is because I was in a group. Really wanted to give a 2.5 star review, but yelp isn't that precise. First, the saving grace for this restaurant is the wait staff. Very professional, not too intrusive, and always kept my drink topped off. The food, however, is a tad mediocre for my taste. I grew up around flavorful TexMex, and that is where El Tapatio's falls short. Food looks amazing, but is bland. Their house salsa is short on flavor and kick. My wife and I got the bean dip, which was super runny, but tasted ok. For our entree, I opted for the Enchiladas Supremas. It tasted very store bought, lacked any seasoning and I was disappointed. My wife chose the Chimichangas, one shrimp, one steak. I tasted the steak and you could tell that the shrimp was cooked right beside it, which is not my preference. The upside was that the Chimichangas were very crisp, not overly large, and in general, ok. Again though, they lacked seasoning. Having traveled through out the Midwest, south and southeast, this comes off to me as appealing to the Midwest pallet, which in general is bland. If you want big flavor, this isn't your place. If you want Mexican light, this is definitely for you. read more

Totally agree, best Mexican in Wooster. In fact, we have dined at Mexican restaurants in the Cleveland area and find that nothing compares to this place. My biggest problem? The salsa is AMAZING and i fill up on so much of it I can't eat my meal. Definitely recommend this place. Did i mention that the staff is super attentive and the service is super fast?? Visited for the first time on Saturday evening. The food was good, not spectacular, but not bad either. The margarita however, was very good and a pitcher for $13 (Saturday special) is a steal. So many places make margaritas with that overly sweet, fake mix. This place uses real, fresh lime juice and it makes a world of difference. read more

This is kind of a hidden gem in Wooster. It is on the north side of the city. Four of us went and we had 4 different dinners. While we waited we were provided with baskets of fresh hot tortilla chips and salsa from a friendly wait-staff. The dinners came piping hot and were all quite delicious. The frozen margaritas are wonderful and well worth the entire experience. Overall, we were very impressed and hope to make a return visit soon. read more

Ordered the Seafood chipolte when the food arrived I was surprised that only two scallops were on the plate along with a good amount of shrimp and rice. when I brought it to their attention that the dish was lacking my favorite part ( the scallops) She said it was because they were so large LOL for a 13.00 dish I was very dissapointed!!!
