I had a crispy chili rellanos, first one ever made that way, was absolutely delicious! I think this would have been 3.5 stars except that we had a rather taciturn waiter, because the food and drink was really pretty good. Ambience was nice, not fancy but not grungy. The $6.50 house margs completely trounced the $10+ margs we had at Dos Hombres earlier in the week. My chipotle chicken burritto was not too shabby and my wife's fish tacos were reportedly not bad (although still not hitting the spot like those that our former fave, Juanita's in Boulder used to offer). Not yet feeling the 4-5 star love that other reviewers are, but we'd definitely go back. read more

Excellent family run restaurant. So-so location surrounded by fast food on each side but this is a winner. Nice feeling inside with good Mexican decorations, high backed booths and very . The margaritas are good sized, tasty and fairly strong. Excellent presentation. Chicken fajitas were large enough to feet two people. Chips were fresh with too mild salsa. Excellent staff. Came back several times to check on our meals. Restaurant and restrooms clean. Good off street parking. A very popular restaurant. Good spot to spend an evening at. Amazing service, delicious meals, generous servings! My family and I are passing through from Texas and after a long day of exploring today, we were super hungry and tired. I found El Tapatilo on Yelp and the pictures looked like the Mexican food we get back home so we decided to give it a try. The staff was so friendly and accommodating, we ordered a lot of food and were told it would be about 20 minutes. It was less than 15 minutes later that our food was being brought out to us in our car. When we sat down in our RV to eat, we were so surprised at how much food you get in your meals, it was enough for 2 meals! Everything was packaged so well and we were given plenty of utensils and salsa. We all agreed that the food was so well flavored and prepared. My nachos supreme were so tasty and had lots of fresh ingredients. Exactly the way nachos should be. We were very pleased! The tapatilo special my dad had was worth every penny he said, and the shrimp wrapped in bacon is genius, I'm definitely going to try and make it at home now! This is amazing Mexican. I only detract a star for the higher price point. This is easily one of the best quesadillas I've ever eaten. Great Mexican food and extensive menu. We had carryout and it was packed with care. Large oval platter wrapped in foil and then covered with another oval platter and the whole covered in foil again. By the time we arrived at hotel, checked in,took bags to room, changed clothes, the food was still warm and delicious. huge amount of salsa and chips given on carry out order. I had Burrito Frajitas with steak and loved it. My friend had mole enchiladas and were really deliciuos. We went there and were treated very poorly. We have been going to this restaurant for 13 years, & we will never return! The manager has been rude to me before when I found a curly chest hair inside my burrito, this was about 5 years ago. It was nasty and she didn't believe me and said it was my hair! So last night we walked in (all wearing masks) and I had to go to the bathroom. I dropped my purse off with 2 people in my party at the table & booked it the bathroom with my other daughter. While we were in the bathroom, supposedly someone sitting in a table close to us told the manager they were upset that the 2 at our table took off their masks (at the table) OH! & we were served chips, salsa and beans, but couldn't eat them! I'm still in the bathroom. My 16 year old comes in and tells me her and boyfriend were harassed and they were going to the car. I left the bathroom and immediately asked for a manager, as I walked by 8 tables and no one was wearing a mask! I found the manager and interrupted her and said, "There isn't one single table in here that has their masks on & I'll be dammed if you are going to harass my kids and treat them differently than other people here." I pointed right at her nose and said "we aren't wearing them!" And walked to the table. She followed me with 3 other workers. Meanwhile my husband arrived and went to the bathroom. I sit down and she tells me to put on my mask until our drinks arive.... I said No, no way. She said I can get fined 15k and I said "and I can sue you for making the 5 of us wear a mask at a dinner table with food in front of us, 3 of us have asthma, and the other 40 people in here aren't wearing a mask!" I said I come here all the time and spend a shit ton of money. They just stared at me. So I grabbed my purse dumped the chips all over the table and said, "We'll never eat here again." She deserved it. Their chips and salsa are good, but that manager is an idiot! read more

Customer service left much to be desired. We saw our server for our order, a fast stop after the first bite and then we only saw her backside as she was chatting it up with the table across from us for the rest of our meal. The ambiance was definitely more authentic than most Mexican restaurant chains. The carne asada was excellent. Very tasty & carne asada is my favorite Mexican dish. The margaritas are great for the price. My husbands meal, the tapatio grande (3 item combo platter) was large but was not very seasoned. We stopped here on our way back from Telluride to Denver. After reading the reviews, we were excited to try this place. We were, however, disappointed. The service was extremely slow, they forgot to bring out our guacamole and ended up getting it mid-meal. The chicken had curious bits of gristle and was very unappetizing. My friend had the seafood enchilada with imitation crab and real shrimp. The crab was extremely fishy and the sauce drizzled over the top was bland and not good. Some of the best Mexican I have ever had! Loved the salsa, chips and slaw!! I had pork stomach taco, enchilada cheese and onion red, tamale, rice and beans! All excellent, if I had to drop an item it would have been the tamale. My buddy had two carnitas tacos and we both agreed excellent! Tapatio's is evidence that even as far north as Grand Junction there can be some decent Mexican food. I was only passing through, and can barely remember what I ate that day, but that's more of the effect of the extraordinary amount of driving than a testament to the food itself. Because the food was good - I think it was one of the signature combo meals, and there may be a tostada involved, but I do remember they gave me a squeeze tube full of salsa, and by the end of the meal, it was only half full. I have visited this place a couple times and wasn't blown away by much. The salsa is bland and the entrees are just ok. The service is probably the best part of the place. Orders are always fast and correct in my experience. It is a nice cheap change up from going downtown, but the quality of lacking in a few different areas. Looking for excellent Mexican food in Grand Junction. Even though I am from Texas, I needed a Mexican fix after travelling to Grand Junction. What a great surprise! Fresh homemade salsa plus an unusual cabbage salsa were complementary. They had a large selection of Mexican seafood dishes. The portions were very large and the quality was high.
