Basic greasy, unhealthy, Mexican fast food. Nothing to be excited about. Incredibly rude drive-through people. Instead of politely asking me to repeat myself as he couldn't hear me, he says "I can't hear you." So I drive up to the "weeeendow" and he has the order completely put together. So all that rudeness was totally unnecessary. He did hear me. So bizarre. No water or ice available. Resistance shown to more napkins. Salsa was a project, trying to get some. The order weighs a ton due to hefty (either unhealthy seed oil or pork grease) grease presence. Now that I know the secrets of the -Bertos restaurants, I have to stop by any that I see. First up on my recent Utah/Colorado road trip: Los Jilbertos in Grand Junction. Driving up to the storefront, I knew I would be in for a treat, with the smell of charred meat wafting through the front door and a long line of cars in the drive-through line, wrapping all the way around the store. The parking lot steadily filled up between when I arrived and left the restaurant. Even with how busy they were, the food came out quickly and we were digging in soon afterwards. Adobada Taco ($4.50) - My first impression upon seeing my to go order - why is this taco in such a large takeout container? When I opened it, I quickly figured out why - the tacos Los Jilbertos serves are gigantic! The taco includes two 6-inch corn tortillas, topped with a mountain of meat, onion, cilantro, and a drizzle of green avocado sauce. The meat is fried very well to create a crispy exterior. It doesn't have the most flavorful marinade - definitely missing a bit of fruitiness or sweetness that other places tend to add to adobada marinade, but it's serviceable for the taco, being salty and savory. It's not as oily as other places might tend towards. The onion is pungent but refreshing, and the cilantro adds a nice herbal quality. The fry on the meat dries it out a bit and unfortunately the green sauce isn't added in a large enough amount to influence much. This taco practically begs for the addition of salsa for moisture, but it's overall very pleasing to eat. (4/5) Carnitas Burrito ($9) - This is fairly similar in composition to the taco, but consisting of meat, pico, and green sauce, all rolled into a single larger, pliable flour tortilla. After assembly, the burrito measures about 3 inches by 8 inches, smaller than the average burrito that I'm used to, which means they need to roll up the tortilla several layers deep, enhancing the dryness of the interior. Again, the meat is fried well, nice and crisp, with a good texture, but on the dry side, and the pico and scant amount of green sauce, doesn't contribute enough moisture. There is a ton of flavor here though. This burrito almost requires the addition of salsa, or perhaps sour cream or guac. (4/5) I love the salsa bar here - They have red salsa, which is sour, very smoky, almost overwhelmingly pungent, and isn't spicy even though it's an angry red color. There's green, which is a classic tomatillo salsa, a bit spicy, tangy, and very fresh. There's pickled onion/carrot/pepper, and finally pico. I love how they give plastic 2 oz cups with lids to pack up the salsa, and even sandwich bags to take more of the pickles and pico. Los Jilbertos is certainly a solid -Berto's restaurant. I love that they fry the meats hard, creating texture and additional flavor, but this creates a great need for additional elements to add moisture to the food. The amount of green sauce they add is enough for meat that's not fried as long, but not enough for what Los Jilbertos serves, at least in my non-expert opinion! At one time this was my go to restaurant for good Mexican food, but the quality of the food has gone down in my opinion. Their rolled tacos used to be really good, but now you get taquitos that you can buy a box of at Walmart for the same price. The last 2 times I've been there, the food tasted bland and devoid of flavor, and today it wasn't even hot. I'll have to find another place for good Mexican food as I won't be back here. read more

Los Jilbertos - Yummy shrimp tacos - Mexican Near Me - Grand Junction, Colorado

Los Jilbertos is our new favorite spot for mexican food in the state of Colorado. Coming from San Diego its actually impossible to find good mexican food in CO. All of this smothered garbage and goopy cheesy crap is a sad excuse for mexican food. Finding a quality taco, burrito, torta, dilla, or menudo is virtually impossible. Thankfully Los Jilbertos delivers on all fronts. I'd literally invest money for Los Jilbertos to open a location in the south Denver suburbs. We came to Grand Junction as a stop over on a trip to Unaweep Canyon for 4th of July. Needless to say we have since been back twice and plan on returning a third time before heading back to Denver. We are even going to buy extra burritos to bring home and freeze. I know, we have a problem. We had the beef quesadilla, carnitas burrito, adobada and carne tacos, bean and cheese burrito, and conga burrito. They even made us a bean and cheese quesadilla. All of it was god damn brilliance. From the moment we laid eyes on Los Jilbertos bright amarillo colored building to its perfect smell of frijoles and grilled carne to the gorgeous salsa bar with spicy carrots and salsa roja y salsa verde i was in heaven. Where else can you find a burrito chalk full of cabeza? There's a price for perfection and Los Jilbertos prices are unbeatable. We'll stopping by anytime we're rolling through Grand Junction. I'm from San Diego, and like others have said, we know our Mexican food and this place is authentic. We ordered take out and the food was ready very quickly. I had the adobada burrito, which was excellent (and big!). They had two massive bowls of red and green sauce at the salsa bar and the usual pickled carrots/jalapeños. All very tasty. The red sauce was a little watery for my liking but the heat level was perfect. For a night visiting family when we couldn't decide what to eat, this place was a nice surprise. I have been coming to Los J's regularly for 7 years. They have NEVER gotten my order wrong. The food is CONSISTENT and GOOD. Tacos, burritos, super fries, always a generous portion with lots of meat. Came here on a recommendation from a local 10 years ago while driving through, and try to stop by every time I'm driving across the 70- it's not an easy/quick off and back on the freeway, but worth it. The breakfast burritos meet the So Cal expectation of deliciousness. This morning, they pre-split two breakfast burritos for us so we could both try bacon and sausage. I had the carnitas, chicken and beef tacos. The carnitas was in a corn tortilla, chicken in a hard shell and the beef in a fluffy shell. Start with the sad part, the beef was bland. End with the good stuff, the chicken was succulent and flavorful. The carnitas had crispy parts and was fabulous. We were looking for someplace that was open after 10 pm on a Sunday in Grand Junction, and let me tell you, I was pleasantly surprised. We went thru the drive-thru, and we were able to find delicious, authentic Mexican food, fast and for a reasonable price. The tacos, rolled tacos, and green salsa were amazing. I finally tried this place after driving by frequently and seeing how packed it is all the time. I ordered the combination taco plate and I ordered an extra taco I was expecting street style tacos that's why I ordered an extra one but the tacos were crispy and had lettuce and cheese they were stuffed! It was not the tacos I wanted but they were so delicious and the salsa is good! I quickly regretted getting the extra taco cuz it was too much food but I was not disappointed at all! I ordered breakfast burritos and was able to half them and eat them throughout the week. Their salsas have great flavor and HEAT. Both of which are hard to find on the Western Slope.
