Probably my favorite sentimental ,since I was a kid , restaurant ...... my favorite Mexican food ever ...... love everything about this place from the chips and salsa ( whole fried corn tortillas ) , the carne asada cooked crispy , the enchilada sauce , the ground beef , the beans and rice , the service ........ I will admit that this place is a local favorite , we locals live this place , but people from out of the area are not as crazy about it as we are ....... the enchilada sauce is a very sweet red sauce which is unusual to most people , the beans and rice are not necessarily authentic straight from old Mexico , but still the best I've ever had ..... and I don't like chili relleno , but the ones here are completely unique from Any you ever had .... Most people don't like Them unless they grew up here ....... basically they do some unique things that we locals love and people from out of town don't care for ..... I could care less .... I moved away for 10 yrs and missed this place like crazy , now that I'm Back I eat here once a week and i never get tired of it read more

This is a really popular joint, yet the staff never get used to it, or at least that's how it seems. Depending on the day, it could be difficult to get anyone's attention to take your order or to bring refills. The chicken burrito is quite dry as it's essentially just meat without anything else. The shrimp cocktail tastes like they used rotting shrimp. The enchiladas, chiles rellenos & just about most things are covered in a disgusting red sauce. Authentic mexican food??? Not at this place! But the food is super tasty. Their tostada chips and yummy salsa is totally addicting! Their enchilada ("mole") sauce is AMAZING! Their classic margarita is pre mixed but the price of the bottled beer isn't bad and it's a better deal :) The atmosphere is why I'm sure most Portervillians come here :) I no longer live in The Ville, but everytime I'm here I always run into old friends, ex-boyfriends, etc.. I have been eating here my whole life and always make it a point to visit when I am in town. The day after Christmas my sister commented that she was hungry. I said, "El Tap"? She grabbed the phone to call and make sure they were open. Amazingly I still know the phone number by heart. Amazingly it took Miss O's review to let me in on the secret that El Tapatio has potacos. Sadly I have yet to try them because I have a hard time straying from my usual #8 dinner order of a barbacoa taco, rice, beans and an order of flour tortillas. Sometimes I mix it up and do the combination plate that includes the cheese enchiladas in red sauce. The red sauce is kind of like a mole because it has chocolate in it, which makes it a little sweet. If that's not your style, their green sauce is delicious too. El Tapatio is a Porterville tradtion so if you happen to be in town, it's a must visit. read more

I don't even know where to begin with this review.. This place doesn't even deserve to be called a Mexican restaurant. They put Mexican restaurants to shame!! The food is disgusting. I tried to order a simple super burrito with carne asada. They said any meat other than ground beef is an additional charge, being that the burrito was ALREADY over $10, I just went with the ground beef. That was a mistake, it tasted and even looked fake. This so called "super" burrito Didn't come with avocado or sour cream. The only thing that made it different than a normal burrito was this red sauce they dumped on it. Now usually red sauce on a burrito is red enchilada sauce but this was legit tomato sauce....on my burrito.. Wtf. Not even the chips and salsa were good. This is the kind of food you'd get at a gas station. I've never been more disappointed. Please don't waste your money here. read more

I'm from Porterville, and this was my first time going to El Tap. All my friends and family said this was the place to go for great Mexican food. Boy were they right. I had the beef enchiladas; the sauce had a unique sweetness to it, and was very delicious. Their chips are whole fried corn tortillas, which you break off into pieces, to dip in their phenomenal salsa. Oh and the service was outstanding. We were seated promptly, even though they were crowded; it only took 15 minutes to get seated. read more

I dont know how this place has good reviews. They are overly priced, food was horrible and the service was the worst. I ordered the fajitas, the shrimp was chewy and had no flavor. Didn't even come on a sizzling plater. Server never came to ask for refills or to bring the extra plate i asked for. This is the place I judge all other Mexican restaurants by. I grew up eating the food here and I love everything on their menu. The chips and salsa are perfect and have a slight kick. I love the barbacoa tacos, chile rellanos and enchiladas. Ask for cheese on your rice and then mix the enchilada sauce with a fork full of beans, rice and cheese. Yummy! A tip for preventing your tacos from getting soggy. Add a tortilla chip underneath your tacos until you eat them. All the juices will go under the tortilla chip and your tacos will stay perfect. Overpriced and flavorless. We ordered guacamole to start off and it was disappointing. It looked like something that came out of a container. As for the price, it wasn't worth it. Yes, the food portions are huge but the price definitely isn't worth it. My boyfriend and I ordered enchiladas, his was chicken and mine were cheese. The rice was flavorless, the enchilada sauce was too sweet, and the beans were okay. I've had better tasting Mexican food. By far the BEST mexican food around! We make the drive all the way from Visalia just to eat here. I highly recommend the chicken fajitas, flautas, and enchiladas. Never Again! If you're Mexican don't come here. You will be extremely disappointed. Enchiladas taste like they are made of 95% ketchup. Chile relleno is no chile relleno. It's an omelet that seems to be made of the same fake folded egg they put on McDonalds breakfast sanchwitches. There is a tiny piece of anaheim chile which isn't meant to be breaded in egg. Not even the rice was good. It is flavorless or should I say bad flavor. The only passable thing is the Salsa which by the way was a bit salty. The chips/tostadas were dripping in grease. This restaurant is a total disaster. I can't believe I'm going to say this, but the buffet would have been a better bet. My advise of any Mexican restaurant is to pay attention who's eating there...if 95% of customers aren't Mexican then don't bother and go somewhere else. read more

What can I say, this place has my heart and is my favorite Mexican Restaurant. I've frequented "El Tap" since I was little and will dine here 2-3 times a month with friends or family. First, let me say that I love their food. It's always amazing. However, their prices have skyrocketed. The junior super deluxe has been 8 bucks, which it even shows here, but I just went there and paid 14.32 for a junior super deluxe to go. That's 6.32 more after tax and almost twice as much as their menu here shows. I grew up eating there and have loved it for the last 18 years, but I wouldn't spend that much on a burrito. Either their prices have skyrocketed or I was ripped off. It's unfortunate to say but a burrito at that price in Porterville is too much, so I can't go any longer. read more

El Tap is my favorite Mexican restaurant by far. It owned locally by such great family that is extremely friendly and caring, their customer service is always great! I have been there countless times and have never had a problem. Their food is always spot on and the pries are great! I highly recommend trying this restaurant whenever in Porterville. read more
