Absolutely horrible service. I moved to Austin 8 years ago and this place is nothing compared to what it once was. Cheese is now lower quality, meat is sub par at best. My friends and I were going to a show at Emo's and wanted a place that was close by for dinner. I knew you placed the order at the counter, but it took a minute to figure out what we wanted since it was our first time. Alma took our order, and she was super nice and sweet through the whole process. There was a bit of a wait for the food, but we didn't mind because we had some margaritas and queso! The queso was creamy and spicy; very good. We got 3 chicken tacos and 6 carnitas tacos with cheese and avocado slices. SUPER TASTY! The meat was moist and the the corn tortillas were thin and light. The salsas are great too. The staff was helpful when we needed to get flour tortillas for two of the orders. After the first round, we realized we needed more...two more chicken tacos and 6 pork tacos. Great on both rounds. read more

I went here one night with my drunk friends. My friend grew up in South Texas in a border town (as did I), so I figured he knew good tacos. These were pretty damn good. I got the taco order with 6 fajita tacos with everything. That was my first time there. I also ordered and agua de tamarindo - delicious! So this past weekend when I went to ACL, I was craving these tacos. It took me all weekend to figure out where these were at! Somebody had to take me here. I got the same thing - taco order, 6 fajita tacos. I ordered agua de horchata and it was good and filling, frijoles a la charra - goodddddd, and my friend's friend ordered grilled onion...it was pretty good too and made the tacos. I just need to stop thinking about tacos now that I'm in dallas. The tacos here don't compare to the food in Austin. Re: the service - get there early. The first time I went on a Sat. night after all the clubs closed down and there was some commotion because two girls were kissing or something...I don't know. Whats better than 2 am tacobell? Well anything really, but this place is wayyyyyyyyy better. These are authentic style meskin tacos. The kind you have tia and abeula making for you when you are visiting and decide to drink to much tequila. The espeical is my favorite. 6 mini tacos made to your liking ( i go bisteck, comes with avocado, cilantro, and queso blanco) top them off with some of their famous green sauce (be careful the burn will sneak up on you, we have a love hate relationship at the moment, ha!) I use to love this place, but sadly something has changed. No longer are they efficient with their two line drive through. Instead they have reverted to an inefficient 1 line system that takes double the time of other drive throughs. One of my main reasons for coming here was the chips. They use to be served warm and greesy with minimal amount of salt. However now they are served room temperature and overly loaded with salt. At the end of the day, this establishment no longer serves anything that makes it worth dealing with the hassle of the drive through. read more

I came in after seeing this place on Eater's list of 24 tacos to try in Austin. I ordered the Barbacoa taco, al pastor taco, and carnitas taco, fully loaded on corn tortillas. The carnitas was juicy, but lacking any real flavor. The Barbacoa was tender and juicy, with just a small hint of flavor. The al pastor was by far the best of the 3, but not in the category of the best in Austin. The dining room was dirty and the salsa was empty. This place is average at best. read more

Do you want some good real MEXICAN food, come here. This place has the best Mexican food by far, unless your driving to Mexico anytime soon. I read a review where someone was unpleased with the topping being on the side, so I just added "toppings inside tacos" and we have no problems! I will be ordering from here again. Ok so the food was really really good! But the service is below average. We all ate our food but my friend's food didn't come out till way after we were all done. We went to ask two times and they said they would have it out soon. we asked another time and the lady said she had been calling the number but we never heard the number being called. Don't get me wrong, my tacos and margarita were great! But the workers were a little rude. I feel like people who speak Spanish were treated differently/better than those who didn't. Ventured to El Taquito after a long night of celebrating a friend's wedding. Someone in the group recommended going and getting, the "especial". Despite the long wait, we were not disappointed. We stopped in on Sunday night after checking Yelp for a good place for a 'late' dinner. There were a couple people in line, and the line took forever to move. There was zero urgency by the cashier to get the line moving. We ordered a fajita and caritas plate. The food took a long time to come out, and when it did, it was warm, but not hot. It's too bad, because it was really good! The reason why I gave three stars was because of the wait time and how dirty the place was. We had to clean our own table. Only a couple tables were occupied, and the rest were covered in plates and cups. I saw there was Pico at the salsa bar, but it was gone when I went over. I realize it was 9:30 and they closed at 10 I believe, but why not put more out while you're still open? It looked like they had plenty of staff in the kitchen who were joking around, it's too bad they didn't send someone out to help clean the place up. read more

Found my way here with a big group of friends on a Saturday night after most of our food options on Rainey Street had closed (it was around 2am). Man, were we relieved that this taco joint was open until 3! Although the ratings were good, I was concerned that they may have been skewed by the drunken late-night population (whose standards are substantially lower). I was pleasantly surprised that these tacos really were delicious! I actually think they were the best tacos I enjoyed during my entire visit to Austin, and I wasn't even drunk or very hungry when I had them. The menu looked so appetizing that I couldn't decide between 4-5 options (and my plan to only get one taco quickly expanded into two). Fortunately, the extremely friendly staff guy behind the cash register was happy to offer his recommendations. I ended up getting the fajita beef and the pollo asado, both of which were very tasty. They also have a fun unlimited salsa bar. Bonus!! I only wish that they had labeled some of the salsa that were hard to identify (e.g. the bins other than pico de gallo, cilantro, avocado, etc.) so I didn't have to try them all to know which ones to get for my tacos. It gets a bit packed between 2-3am with drunk people, but that's to be expected from any place open that late! Also, it seems like it would be hard to get here without driving or taking a cab. Overall though, I've found their meals to be fairly inconsistent - the things I remember being good from last time are not, and the things that I am trying again despite my recollections because they still _sound_ good, end up being than last time. The employees mostly speak Spanish so If you don't know Spanish, don't throw a for because they had a hard time understanding you. That's the beauty of this place. The service is very slow. I went on a Friday night, very late. Few patrons, lots of workers. I ordered 2 tacos and a agua fresca, the tacos took like 40-45 minutes to come out. Everyone,s food was taking a long time and I saw some patrons fall asleep while waiting and i saw a guy at a large table get his order last, all his friends were almost done with their food. i don't think they are operating very efficiently in the kitchen. Absolutely delicious. I regret not finding this place until the last day in Austin. I was so happy with the prices of everything I ordered. Their chips and extensive salsa selection was amazing. Stopped by to grab some dinner to go. The wait was about 10 minutes for 3 tacos. I got a Fajitas "Originales", Pollo Asado, and one with Carnitas. I really liked the first. The latter two were respectable, which does mean that they were delicious. I got corn tortillas, which I have to mention did not immediately fall to pieces as soon as any salsa juice got in there. This I am extremely thankful for. They have an open salsa bar for you to top your items as you wish. I tried a couple of them and they were really good. The tacos were good, but you gotta put something else in them to really get the best experience. The bill came out to 5.55. It was enough food. But not the full I'm used to. The tacos here are good but not amazing. I usually get the fajitas originales with cilantro, onion, and avocado. I haven't tried the rice and beans with the plates, but two of my coworkers said they weren't very good. The staff always seems confused and unorganized and getting your food is pretty slow for a place that basically just makes tacos and queso. Overall the food is on par with most taco trucks but you have a place to sit inside and eat lunch. The 6 mini taco combo is always good for lunch. I would have definitely given them at least 4 stars if they didn't stop serving breakfast at 11 AM. I used to frequent the breakfast tacos for lunch, but stopping at 11 killed that. Based on the reviews here - we probably would have fared better had we ordered only tacos. The fajitas and al carbon were dry, dry, dry. The tortillas were very definitely store bought flavor. Can't describe it - a little plasticky maybe? Enchilada impact from our friend: "Meh. I've had better." All the salsas were delicious. Try them all! The dining area was very odd. Some high bar style seating around the perimeter and then several low tables. A bit cramped. The metal seats were weird, lightweight and awkward. We sat one of the high bar tables because the low tables were taken and we found ourselves too close to the people behind us. For the price, I guess this place is just alright? I lived in the Riverside area for 3 years while I went to college at UT, and I can say that the best Mexican food I've ever had, came from this restaurant. I got introduced to Al Pastor tacos when coming here, and they are now my favorite type of taco! You have to get it with pineapples, onions, and cilantro in order to create the perfect taco. Their bistek and chicken fajita tacos are really good too. And don't get me started on the horchata. I've never had horchata before coming to El Taquito, but now I ask for it whenever I go to a Mexican restaurant. It's that good! One last thing, if you're a fan of salsa, you have to try the bright, vibrant red salsa in the salsa bar. I have no idea what kind of salsa it is, but it's the best salsa I've ever had. Seriously.
