I love the food & service here. I usually order bistec a la mexicana, which is a combination plate. I also tried their tacos and tortas. The torta is huge! so be prepare to share that with a friend. i wasn't able to finish mine alone. The combination plates are about $12, but is huge plate. It's always rubbed me the wrong way when people say, "This [ethnic] restaurant must be good, because I see a lot of [ethnicity] people eating there!" The questionable logic notwithstanding (I've seen plenty of Americans flocking to horrible American restaurants -- maybe foreigners believe that Applebee's must be great) it seems a little weird to be analyzing the racial demographics of your fellow patrons, and drawing conclusions about the quality of the food based on that. And that brings me to El Taquito Mexicano, one of those places that, I've been led to believe, is validated by the perceived racial makeup of its clientele. I cannot confirm or dispute the claims about the people who eat there; on the recent Friday night I went, my gf and I were the only customers (so, for one night anyway, the diners were 100% mixed-race Asian/Caucasian/Sri Lankan/Jewish -- wonder what that says). What I can report is that the food -- which, call me crazy, is how I generally rate a restaurant -- was disappointing. The chips were stale, the salsa tasteless. The tacos? I've had better -- much better. The tortillas were decent but not enough to save the meal. In fairness, El Taquito Mexicano does have a rather impressive selection of traditional Mexican dishes on its menu, and perhaps it excels at some of those plates. On the other hand, we ordered very basic, straightforward meals, and they couldn't get those right. So, you can draw your own conclusions. Frankly, I'd instead recommend Tortilleria Sinaloa down the street for Mexican food. The food is better, and I've seen a lot of Mexican people there -- oh, never mind. read more

I am so excited to have found a legit Mexican food spot! I'm originally from Los Angeles, California where good Mexican food is abundant. If this restaurant were in LA it would be hands down one of my favorites. I loved the carnitas, I guess they only make menudo and carnitas on Sunday. They make a 15 day and a 40 day tepache, which is difficult to find in places. Tepache is a yummy pineapple wine, the 40 day one is less sweet, equally delicious. Let me start by prefacing that the waitress was nice, and the starting chips/salsa were good. However, at the end of the day, I am not one to care much about service aside from water refills and getting the correct order in/out (do you really like being asked how the food is, when the food is still in your mouth?). The place was pretty deserted around 7:00pm; the only people in the restaurant were me, my friend, the cook, the waitress, and her two kids. The burrito that came out was not very good. The al pastor was very sweet (it should be more salty/spicy than anything else). The whole thing was mushy, even though it was a "dry" burrito. I didn't finish my burrito. I tried my friend's tacos that he ordered, and they were okay! Definitely not worth $2.50-$3.00 a pop, but a taco's a taco's a taco. I hail from 4 years in San Diego and take pride in tasty Mexican food. San Diego Mexican food at the taco shops isn't necessarily authentic, but it tastes a heck of a lot better than what I was given here. Even though I'm from Chicago, I'll eat Chicago style pizza outside of Chicago and wish it were as good as my hometown, but it's not heartwrenching. I'll eat New York style pizza outside of New York and wish I could have the real deal, but it doesn't kill me. Something about eating the Mexican food here and being underwhelmed by it did indeed manage to throw a nail in my heart. I guess to save myself the heartbreak, I should avoid tasting Asian food while I'm in Baltimore until I get some real confirmation on the quality. Stopped by here today and had an amazing chicken quesadilla. Also got a tostada that was ok. Loved the spicy salsa with chips as well. A negative was a very long wait time for the food but this may be an anomaly. Overall standard Mexican but the chicken quesadilla is exceptional with really well toasted outer layer. read more

Worst Mexican food I have had in a long time. No guacamole (despite calling first and being assured that they did have it). Got veggie enchiladas that was cheese wrapped in cold tortilla topped with iceberg lettuce. Beans were cold. Stingy with chips. Salsa almost too spicy to eat. The menu here has changed in the past year but the food remains really solid. I'm not sure if there's a new owner or if they just decided to make some changes to what they serve but either way it's still a great place for a cheap, tasty meal. One thing that bummed me out was that I no longer saw mole on the menu. You used to be able to get great mole chicken here but that appears to be gone. I completely agree with Pascal. I haven't been to any of the other Mexican places on Eastern Avenue, mostly because this one is so good! The food is excellent, well-seasoned (and occasionally spicy, which a lot of Mexican places that cater to gringos aren't), and dirt cheap. The salsa verde was particularly good, and I love the chile relleno. The avocado sauce is just that - if you're expecting Tex-Mex guacamole, you will be disappointed, but it's still tasty. Plus, the service is solid, and the staff speak good English, so if you have any questions or requests, you needn't worry. And if you want to brush up on your Spanish, you can always watch the TV Azteca on in the background. read more

This is a cute, hole-in-the-wall type place. Not fancy, but very down-to-earth, just the way I like it. The food was delicious, and felt authentic. The waitress seemed to speak minimal English, but the menu listed the items in both English and Spanish. They serve complimentary chips with different types of spicy dip before the meal. Prices for the meal ranged from 7$-12$. I got a steak platter and it was delicious. This was such a fantastic surprise! My husband and I stumbled upon it after passing up another little restaurant a couple doors down that we found to be overpriced. We had a delicious Pozole Blanco and the most complex, smoky red salsa . Wish I could have bought a jar of it. After eating at Tortilleria Sinaloa and trying this place, I would rate this place above Tortilleria Sinaloa. Not only is the food more flavorful, but they have plenty of table seating and they accept credit cards. As for the food, it was incredibly flavorful and well spiced. We had the tacos for dinner and the chicken al pastore, the chorizo, and the carne asada were incredibly tender and fully flavored. The chicken al pastore were my absolute favorite. They were mind blowingly savory and juicy. The tacos were stuffed to the brim and ordering the guacamole sauce was almost not necessary, but not to be regretted either. The meal also came with some radish, grilled pepper, and fried spring onion accoutrements. These were great little palate cleansers from the meat and even better vessels for the leftover bits of guacamole. While we were waiting, he offered their complimentary drink, a fermented juice made from pineapple skin that was much less sweet than real pineapple juice. It was incredibly refreshing and a great contrast to some of their spicier foods during our meal. Overall, a cozy and great little hole in the wall! You can tell the owner takes pride in the food and he wants you to savor all the flavors in his food. If we had questions about the food, he was more than happy to explain the types of seasoning. Between 6 tacos, 2 drinks, and an appetizer of thick tortilla chips, our meal was only $20 and overall awesome!!! read more

It doesn't taste like anything, it has a strange cheese in it, and it's not even in a tortilla, but some sort of thick dough thing with a strange texture. I will NEVER set foot there again. This place is great. You can always judge the quality of a Mexican restaurant based upon the number of Mexican and latino customers in the dining room. If the place is full of gringos, chances are it isn't very good. This place is the real deal. The Chips and guacamole are great and dirt cheap $3.50, maybe less. The guac is more of an avocado sauce, smooth and tangy but perfect. It comes with a generous side of delicious tomatillo sauce as well. Chips are refilled on the house. I love the tacos con frijoles y queso. (beans and cheese) Served with cilantro, onions, incredible smoky homemade habanero chipoltle hot sauce as well as the aforementioned tomatillo sauce. Excellent. The refried beans are extremely flavorful and rich. I'm sure its because of lard, so if you are a strict vegetarian you are S.O.L. ... My wife has ordered the Bistec Mexicano which is divine. A very thin piece of lightly seasoned beef served with an amazing spicy tomato sauce with hints of cumin and oregano, white onions , beans, rice and tortillas. The rice leaves a little to be desired but all else is good. I don't generally like beef but I had to taste this because it looked and smelled so good, and it was. I have also had the sopas, which are thick, soft homemade corn tortillas served with beans, or meat. Topped with lettuce, radish, sour cream, mexican cheese and sides of hot sauce, both red and green. Fantastic. The tostadas are excellent as well, served just like the sopas, only on top of a deep fried traditional corn tortilla. Awesome. The roasted chicken with red chile sauce is also extremely delicious. Its a quarter chicken perfectly roasted with a simple and full flavored home made red chile sauce. I am a big fan of red chile sauce and El Taquito has a got theirs down. Its spicy, smoky, robust and comforting. Also comes with beans,rice and corn tortillas. My kids go for the chicken tacos. I find the shredded chicken to be a little bland and greasy at times. Sometimes its dry and crusty, so beware. They like it though. I would avoid ordering Enchiladas with Mole. I love mole, but both times I ordered it here it was very oily, and bitter. It didn't taste fresh or clean and it was a disappointment. I tried the Enchiladas with verde but they weren't memorable. I haven't tried the soups, but every time I go I see customers with either the tripe soup or Pozole on the table. They look and smell fantastic, and due to their popularity I'm sure they are good. I also see a lot of people order the fried chicken platter. It looks like a boneless breast of chicken pounded thin, battered and deep fried served with lettuce, radish, lime wedges, beans and rice with homemade hot sauce. Looks and smells good, too. If fried chicken is your thing I would not hesitate to order it. Its popular for a reason. The menu features Rabbit, Liver, and various other authentic Mexican Specialties. All in all its good. This is our go-to dining place for quick, cheap but always so satisfying bite. We tried almost everything and they are all excellent. This is very authentic place with some seriously hot salsa. I waited for like 25 mins. The customers that stood in line behind me and ordered their food got their food. This was a great lazy Sunday brunch spot. I say lazy because our food was slooow coming out, but if you have a relaxed group the food pay off is worth it.
