First off, to address the past reviews of bad service from, arguably, sketchy accounts--my husband and I are both Filipino. We had Amada and a few others who dropped off food, but Amada and her coworkers were nothing but attentive and kind to us. Now onto the drinks and food! FYI we found out the hard way 1 order of tacos has 4 pieces. We had: -Michelada; the drink has an option to add shrimp. I really wanted to love this place but the music is so loud, it made me want to run away before I even ordered my meal. Who likes to be screamed at while enjoying yummy tacos? Not me. The food itself was fine... not the worst I've had and not the best. Steak was a bit dry and could use flavor boosters. The cheeses were ok. The chips would be great if warmed. Beware!!!! Horrible service, and they are CROOKS!! visited for the first time on a Monday @ 715pm or so. Ordered appetizer and 2 drinks from the Happy hour menu $8 each until 8pm. Received our food which by the way was very bland and cold, so we asked them to warm it up - red flag #1 When it was time for the check around 8:35pm, we noticed they didn't add the prices to the items so we asked for itemized receipt. The waitress comes back with prices and they upcharged the drinks to $14 each. When we ask about the drink price, they had the nerve to say that it was past 8pm. We then told them yes it's past 8pm now that we've ate but when we placed our order it was well before 8pm. They then proceeded to say that they will have the manager look at the video camera to see the time we arrived and ordered - what a disgrace! Never again, this is why it's hard to casually support small business's. Next time we will stick to our usual place - Puerto Vallarta further down on Bergen Blvd, food is much tastier and fresh, drinks are amazing and staff are friendly. El Tio Taco has been our favorite tacos spot for the past few years. The menu has a range of different foods. Anyone can pick what they're in the mood for a delicious meal. Horchata here is in the biggest glass I have ordered compared to other places. There is a lot of ice in it. If you want less of it, let your server know. It's delicious and light, you can taste the cinnamon and make for a great drink. Tacos are where it's at here. I always order chicken, other company I have been with love lengua and other menu options. Each meal is packed with so much on your plate. It's awesome. The homemade chips with the sauces are all fresh, too. The restaurant is super inviting with the fun colors and Art. Service is always friendly, and parking is available around the neighborhood. All forms of payment are accepted. The only con is how loud the music can get in the restaurant. We have been fine with it. You will likely find yourself speaking louder. I learned a while ago that it'll always be busy on cico de mayo. Otherwise, always plenty of seats available. Until next time when we're craving tacos again. read more

It used to be a nice place to hang out with friends, but there is a recurring issue with the man behind the counter, whose name is Pablo. He is often seen standing and watching others, laughing when customers have had a bit too much to drink. The main concern is that he does not assist customers at all because he is "not a waiter." This means I have to wait until another staff member is available, even when the team is clearly working hard. Pablo does not step in to help--not even to bring the bill to a table. This is not the first time I have experienced this. I also feel uncomfortable when he observes customers enjoying themselves, as he seems to make fun of them rather than provide service. read more

A mostly-forgettable dining experience. But first, their biggest positive: wonderfully decorated interior in which you feel transported to Mexico. Well done! We had our first bizarre moment was when we were given menus with no prices. After asking where the prices were, the young waitress quickly switched them out for other menues with prices written on sticky notes and added next to the meal description. We asked for water and were brought two Poland Spring bottles of water. Figuring we were going to be charged for those, we asked for just simple tap water, and we're given two cups of water. Our waitress definitely had trouble understanding our request, so another waitress came over and we asked her and she seemed to immediately understand what we meant. As for our order: our pork tacos were pedestrian at best, with the pork lightly seasoned and a tough, chewy consistency. I had expected a softer, melt-in-your-mouth type pork. The pork burrito was a better choice and a very healthy-sized portion, as the photo shows. The "Tio Taco" written in sauce is a nice addition. The pork included the burrito seemed better, perhaps because of the addition and flavor influence of the rice and beans. Bizarre moment part two: the bill. It was presented as being $31 (before tax) and we discussed amongst ourselves how that could be. We both thought we remembered the taco were either $12 or 14, and the burrito was $13. So how did it equal $31? We asked to speak to anyone who explain it. We then saw the two ladies who had served us discussing the bill with a male waiter. Finally, he came over and told us the two meals were each $14, the water was $1 each and the to-go contrainer was $1. I said we had returned the water bottles since we didn't want to be charged for water, and had asked for just tap water. He replied that they had opened the bottles and poured them into the cups, which we were served. Not what we asked for, but...the language barrier might be to blame. Then he adds, "And the to-go container was $1." Now that is a first for me, being charged for the plastic to-go container. I work in travel and dine in hundreds of restaurants each year and had never been charged for a to-go container. It's like being taxed for taking the food you bought home...talk about leaving a bad taste in a diner's mouth as they exit . I got n order of El Pastor tacos which included 4 tacos. They also gave me chips with various salsas/sauces. WARNING : stay away from that red hot sauce! WOW!! It's the funniest thing that this amazing taco palace only has 3 stars on yelp. I've been living in Fairview for 3 years now and this is my go to Mex spot. Open late and the food is always slamming. Firstly, the service was the worst I have ever received in my life! If you are any other race besides hispanic they ignore you and that is coming from a hispanic! My family and I only waited about 10 minutes to be seated. Once the waitress arrived at our table (20 minutes later) and took our order we waited over 30 minutes for our drinks and another 50 minutes for our food. As I took a look around I saw that all the table with only hispanic people we getting serviced in a quick manner. The other tables and it was only a hand full that were a mix of ethnicity waited just as long a we did! I'll preface my review with the fact that I have been to Mexico many times and have built a strong love for Al Pastor street tacos. If a taco spot has Al Pastor tacos on the menu I always try them as my baseline to judge how good a place is. I drove by this spot while heading to home depot in north bergen and decided to stop in with my buddy on the way home and man was I impressed with their tacos. Not only do they know how to do Al Pastor tacos properly with the grilled pineapple, but all the other tacos we ordered were super on point. We like all the weird organ meats so we ordered the cow tongue, pig ear, and cow stomach variants as well and they were all super pleasing to eat. Great seasoning on all the meats and cooked perfectly. I also ordered some carnitas tostada's and they were also very very good. Nicely loaded with all the authentic ingredients and flavors. Im pretty certain they make all their salsas in house as they were all very good and quite spicy if you like it that way. Im super stoked to finally have a great taco spot close to home! The service is horrible went with my mother in law who is Puerto Rican and my wife and her sister who is half black and half Puerto Rican. I myself am half black and half Korean. That night there was 1 other table that was African American male with his children waiting like we were for over 2 hours as we watched others get served. I watched a whole movie as the manager gave my family complimentary margaritas as we waited for tacos and other dishes to come out. The table next to me (Hispanic) laughed with me saying I'm going to eat before you as his family sat down got their drinks right away and had their food brought to them in a timely manner. My mother in law was in shock to see not only me a disabled veteran treated this way but her own mixed daughter treated this way by people who are her own. This really shocked her deeply. It's too bad to see everyone but the black people get served in a timely manner. They only served us because we wouldn't go away. Both the single father with the kids. What a shame I only live a few blocks away was suppose to be my wife's new taco spot. read more

First time eating inside since they opened, but had ordered take out twice. Its definitely better to eat in. As we approached the entrance the outdoor host was super welcoming and thats exactly what a restaurant needs. He was great! He showed us to our table and sat us inside. There a waitress brought us chips and salsa(s) 4 to be precise. Their menu is large but we ordered tacos de carne asada and some carne & pollo quesadillas. The quesadillas are HUGE and come in a order of 3, tacos come in 4 and you can mix and match! The service was good, it was an early dinner, so I advice to be patient if you go at a busy time. I have been to this place a total of 3 times . The 1st time there the food was excellent and the service was great. I went back with my family and it was terrible . I ordered a mixed fajita thinking it was chicken and beef - was not.. it had shrimp - when I asked the waitress she said - look at the picture - no where in the description of the fajita was there mention of shrimp - I paid for it and took it home for my dogs. My mom ordered a shrimp cocktail - she ended up with a shrimp soup of some sort. We were very disappointed on this visit . Decided to go back a 3rd time to give it another try - now the prices went up , service was terrible despite their overstaffing and the food took forever to come. So disappointed with this place after we had such a great experience the 1st time. It's a shame. Whatever they decided to do and chang in the last month was definitely not a good decision . I am a big fan of El Tio Taco and I often visit the one on 51st Bergenline Ave but when we found out about this new location, we decided to try it out... At first it looks very spacious (something the other location lacks) and they both have similar colors. The waitresses here are very friendly and attentive (just like the other one) but what I do notice here is the food doesnt taste as fresh as the other location... We've been here a total of 4 times already (compared to at least 50 times the other location) and twice I've notice the meat tasted sour/expired. I dont know if it's that they transport the food from the other location to here but it obvious it's either not properly stored or just expired meat... Last night was the second time I noticed something off with the meat but we has already arrived to our home in NYC. (Yes, we come from NYC to NJ just for El Tio Taco) And what I also noticed with this Bergen Blvd location is there is no hot water in the women's bathroom!! I thought it was a a plumbing issue that was going to be resolved quickly but for the last 3 times we've been there in a 3 month period, its still not fixed! Not only is it painful to wash in freezing cold water, it is not the most hygienic especially in these times where we're fighting off a new virus. It makes me wonder about the staff and how clean their hands are. While we love El Tio Taco and we dont mind the extra wait time on most of our visits, driving from NYC or paying tolls but the funny tasting meat and no cold water makes me not want to come back. I hope for the sake of this restaurant's reputation they fix these problems ASAP. read more
