The salsa bar is incredible! They have a great huge menu. I love everything I have gotten. My mother said the beef steak was tough. She is an old lady though. Just kidding, she is great. This is best Mexican food I've had in my entire life. They don't use ground beef or cheddar cheese. It's the real deal. I had the Chili Relleno Burrito (probably not the exact name). Yup, deep fried pepper nestled inside a smothered burrito. And washed it down with a tall glass of Harchata. Taqueria El Trompito is a great neighborhood Mexican restaurant. They're beans are actually really good and their salsa bar always has a really good selection. I recommend their carnitas tacos, they don't skimp and two are usually plenty for me. I highly recommend it. read more

This place used to be our favorite hangover place until they had some staff changes. The lady taking our order was distracted, didn't get our drinks until after we ate and had many tables full of dirty dishes while she stood around and complained. We had 4 dinner plates. Carne asada and the chicken mole. My friends liked the carne asada and I thought the mole was about average quality. The pieces of chicken were tiny and the sauce didn't taste that fresh. Although, my friends did like the carne asada plates. We also liked the salsa bar. We all did agree that to pay over $ 50.00 for 4 people, for this meal was too pricey. Now if the hype would have corresponded with reality, then......maybe it would have been worth it. Pricey and not worth it. Have had better food at a roadside taco stand. Went into the ice cream shop on other side of establishment and ordered 6 ice cream cones. My daughter took a lick and the ball of ice cream on the cone went to the floor, I cleaned it up. The lady behind the counter saw the whole thing happen so I asked if she could give her a new scoop for her cone which was still in her hand, she said sure but I will have to charge her. All over central Mexico, the weekend is when you go out with your family and feast on Barbacoa de Borrego. (Braised Lamb) Unfortunatley, the Mexican people in Denver are mainly from northern Mexico where this tradition is not very strong. In Denver, there are only a few placed where you can find good Barbacoa de Borrego. Most notably, "Carboncitos" and "Fritangas- La Pili". So it was with great delight that I discovered "Taqueria El Tompito". I am pleased to report their Barbacoa de Borrego is a solid effort. Maybe not as good as the Barbacoa made in a stone lined pit in my father's home town but nevertheless, pretty solid. The people who own "Taqueria El Trompito" are from Mexico City and it is obvious that they are experienced restauranteurs. Everything about the food, the decor and service showed these restauranteurs are professionals. So the next time, you get a craving for Mixotes de Barbacoa, this is your place. One of the best places for authentic Mexican food! Try it, you'll love it! We had a burrito and 5 tacos, we were soooo stuffed! We ate it all, that's how good it was even though we were full after the burrito and a taco each (just my wife and I). The only bad thing I can say is that the wait was damn near 30 min to get our food! But the food made up for that. My advise is order it to go, but order it well in advance. Oh, and next door is a ice cream shop so if you do decide to dine in, save some room for dessert! read more

I'm Californian so a taqueria is life. I love the authentic food and you know it's authentic when your the only white person there and the cashier pretty much only speaks Spanish. I'm frequently in the area had previously checked the rating looking for tacos, since El trompito seemed to be what I have been looking for and had good rating I figured I'd give it a try. To start out as soon as I came in thought the prices seemed little high compared to other restaurants; I don't mind paying or waiting f the taste makes up for it. I ordered 4 tacos to sample, one was suadero, barbacoa, lengua and cabeza. At first I thought the lengua was little cold, bland and hard to chew. After the 3rd tacos I realiezed that my first tacos was either cabeza or suadero which should not been an issue distinguishing. (not sure what happened there). I would say the Lengua was one of their best tacos I would give it a 3.5-4 stars. The barbacoa was also not bad but I would give it a 3.5 max. Now the other two tacos which ever one or the other was, think the cabeza was the more grinded meat and 3rd taste wise. Didn't taste like I was expecting. The worst if i'm not mistaken was chopped in chunks like many places dice lengua..must of been the suadero. Was really bland and not fully warmed/heated. I was expecting much more being that the menu and restaurant seemed clean and well organized. Sometime it's better to focus on fewer items. It was also not busy either. read more
