El Viejo Yaya is a local Park Slope Brooklyn restaurant that serves very good Latin cuisine. They have a generous menu served in a homey family vibe. I ate their mixed mofongo which definitely filled me up. I also had fried tostones served with a garlic sauce on the side. This is the type of restaurant which you can have something different at least twice a week for a month or longer. Our server was gracious and friendly. I made a quick stop for dinner takeout. The place was packed and very busy. What I really enjoy about this place, is that they have SO many options for food!! Their menu is hugeeee! I ordered the traditional mofongo and longaniza mofongo. I also ordered a few pasteles and mondongo (tripe soup). Stop in for a quick lunch. Food was good for quick lunch standards. I had breaded chicken with yellow rice and red beans. I asked for onions, and I received deliciously seasoned onion. I don't know if they were pickled or what but they were delicious. The rice was a little too clumpy for me, i tend to like my grains more individualized. However, it did taste ok. The breaded chicken and beans were ok, not great. Service was great, very attentive. Ambiance was lacking, but I mean for it isn't that type of party. I had another craving for Dominican food. II'll try to do justice and describe how good the meal is. The mofongo comes w this amazing sauce. I call it MAGIC sauce. It makes everything I dip in it sooo good. I had my favorite bistec empanizado, this time it was thinly pounded and breaded n fried to perfection. Add garlic in oil on top. Crispy, crunchy, beefy & juicy. I got i w tostones. Omg My mouth is watering just thinking about how good it was. The chicken chicharones perfectly cooked as well. My partner and I had a craving for paella and this popped up during my google search. I've walked by many times over my 30 years in the hood but never stepped in. Man this place needs an update. This is our second visit here, this time for my Mrs' birthday and our daughters were with us. Food and drinks were excellent. Yayo Oasis, Blue Hawaiian, Cabernet Sauvignon and a Cosmopolitan were truly amazing and recommended. The paella was very well stocked, lots of fresh seafood and very flavorful. Surf and Turf, steak was delicious but for a NY Strip the quality of the cut could be a little better. The surf part of the meal was excellent, the calamari and shrimp were delicious. The chicken mofongo was well received and enjoyed. And our little one enjoyed her chicken strips and fresh cut french fries. Service was excellent, especially when we requested a table instead of a booth for better comfort. The ambiance was pretty mellow, loved the giant clock on the wall. Prices are moderate and you get a nice serving. Was pretty quiet and we enjoyed the music playing, not ridiculously loud but enjoyable and watching some Olympic Games on the TV. Came to NY to visit my grandpops we stopped by Yayo, had the ceviche, i got the arrow con pollo and we got a side of sweet plantains. All of the food was great, environment was good wish i stayed longer so i could go again. It's giving eh. Bleh. Meh. Eh. A very average, at this point in my life, below average eating experience. I ordered the soup and "Dominican cake". An odd mix but don't judge me! I'm sick with a sweet that can't be helped and definitely wasn't quenched through this experience! Also, quotation marks are absolutely necessary in the case of this "Dominican cake" because it was unlike any I'd ever encountered. Not in good way either. The Dominican cake is definitely pound cake. I was actually shocked when it came as I ordered two pieces and it was literally just a simple pound cake. It was soft and delicious but pound cake nonetheless, and that's not what I ordered. It also came in a box akin to Chinese take out? Very confusing for sure. Clearly no care was taken in presentation for sure. The soup was okay. It's definitely not the best Spanish soup I've ever had. Far from it actually. Some of my yucca wasn't cooked thoroughly and was a little hard. I just ate around it. Broth was okay. Nothing to write home about. Eh. This place is eh. Again, for me at least, below eh. The cappuccino was warm and delicious. I'd probably only come here for that and the POUND CAKE which is what it should be called because that's what it is. Sometimes the allure of free delivery causes me to stray from the righteous path. Such was the case today, when I ordered a cubano sandwich and sweet plantains from El Viejo Yayo. First problem: late delivery. My order showed up after the estimated delivery window. While the food was still warm, it seemed to have been just sitting around for a while. The sandwich in particular showed its age. As for the quality of the food, also not great. The plantains were fine, sure, but that's an easy one. The sandwich was mediocre. Perhaps I've been spoiled by the cubano over at My Cuban Spot, but this one was too small, without enough meat on it. There are a great many restaurants in the abundant pastures of GrubHub. I really like it here, in terms of authenticity, potions, prices, service, it's all pretty darn good. This is my second time here, I came years ago and loved it but never had the chance to get back. I have been coming to this restaurant for years their excellent Spanish delish food created with fresh ingredients with their personal touch. Love It Today I ordered my lunch out l was in mad rush I had The bacalao with salad it was awesome. I usually get their fresh juice selection but as stated I was in crazy rush. We were craving for some Dominican food and we were passing by this restaurant so we decided to give it a try. Our mistake was not to read the reviews and leave since we notice how old looks inside. We were seated in sticky tables almost dirty. Waitress took our order and when the food came out we felt like if we were in prison the food was all over the place, the cook didn't even have time to clean the side of the plates. (We were the only people in the restaurant) The food was tasteless. My wife order a burger which was horrible and the French fries same thing. When we complain about the burger the waitress told us I'm sorry I can't change it or refund you, because my boss gets mad. After 15 minutes that she went inside and discuss it with her boss finally they decided to take it off the bill. After that the waitress ignored us completely. We tried to eat something from the tasteless food but we left almost everything. Such a waste of money and time. As others customers said it, his establishment doesn't match with the quality of restaurants in park slope. Great Latin food at a decent price. My first time here I had "Pollo a la francés" with white rice, and plátanos maduros. My husband had white rice and beans with pork chops. We tried their sangria as well. All the food was served hot, and tasted delicious. With the exception of the pork chops, which were still good but lacked traditional flavor. The sangria was awesome. It was very berry-like. If that's not your thing (you prefer fruity over berry) maybe it's not for you. But I liked it a lot. :) I also loved the complimentary hot bread with garlic served prior to our meal arriving. Our server was delightful. She checked on us regularly, and brought napkins before we had to ask (which is huge, nowadays....) she was also accommodating to our carriage. She was great. I would definitely come again. Aside from the condescending attitude of the hostess. They probably should update the prices on their menu. Chicken and rice on the website is listed as $12 but in reality it's $16. It's not my fault that the menu on your site is from 5 years ago (Maybe) . The respectful thing to do is at least apologize and let me get the meal for the price that's listed.
