Cozy little brunch spot with good service and great food and beverages! I'd definitely recommend making a reservation. It gets crowded even on weekdays. We enjoyed our food - quiche (really unique and delicious!) and falafel croissant. The standouts were the drinks though! I loved my peppermint mocha latte and my friend thoroughly enjoyed her London fog tea latte. I'm knocking a star off because there was a bit of a funky smell when we walked in. Loved my lunch at Matine's Cafe on a sunny Friday afternoon. Adorable interior, pretty patio, pleasant service, and great food--what else could one ask for? The Versailles (grilled chicken, smashed avocado, parmesan, aioli, arugula--I held the truffle oil) sandwich on a French baguette with a side salad (mixed greens with a balsamic drizzle) was absolutely delicious. Eating said meal on the patio in the sunshine (partially under an umbrella) with an iced tea (tea was brewed and then poured over ice) was lovely. P.S. When we were there at newer location, there were virtually no baked goods to choose from, cappuccino was lukewarm, counter woman very nice but floor person harried and distracted. Sandwiches just ok. Parking isn't bad , stay away from the Lafayette especially on a baguette that thing was hard as bricks, that was probably my fault idk why i chose a sandwich that has walnuts and pears in it. Liberal atmosphere, you choose where you sit when you get there. The cups at the table were hella scratched up and felt a disgusted to drink from it, would have been better to just bring us non reusable plastic cups from the dollar tree. Matcha drink tasted terrible, i will say however that staff is friendly and the wait isn't that bad. Maybe spread the seating out a bit and explain what to do with the plates and all that other stuff when done so people don't just sit around confused the whole time. Firstly they moved to Highland Avenue, very nice. Love the pillows! The hot coffee that I ordered was barely warm. I asked for cream and they bought me coffee mate creamers. So I asked do you all have cream? And she bought me some fresh cream. And a new hot cup of coffee. I ordered the butternut squash soup with goat cheese. Terrible. No flavor. Warm at best. I wanted apple pie. They had none left. I arrived at about 3 PM on a Wednesday afternoon. They're doing a lot of business . I wish them well and I will be back. Gave this place a second try since they moved into their new location. Mistake! I came for lunch with a friend visiting from out of town. We decided to sit outside, because I am recovering from an injury and on crutches, so it seemed a bit easier than going in. After a few minutes of 92 degrees with 98 percent humidity, we decided that inside would be more pleasant. My friend went in to scope out a table where I could easily sit with my leg in a resting position and she found a bench. She was approached by waitstaff asking her to order at the counter before sitting and she told her that she would order asap, but could her friend (me) come sit, because of my injured leg and the crutches. She happily said yes of course and so my friend came to fetch me and walk me to the seat she scoped out which felt like a long way on crutches. As we approached, a different waitstaff blocked us with her body and said that the policy is to order first. We asked if I could sit while my friend stood and ordered since I was so close to the table and having to walk back to the counter and then back again to the table would be a bit of a chore. This was my first day out of the house in a month, and I am not quite fluid on crutches yet. She told us that it was policy regardless of injury, crutches, or any disability. We left without ordering anything and I was embarrassed that I brought my friend here. What a terrible way to treat people. read more

Review is a little bit of a roller coaster. I ordered a tea over ice - mango peach ($8ish?) and the smashed avocado tartine($16) and I left a $3 To-Go. 35 minutes goes by and someone asks me if I was waiting for an order, I say "yes, it's been about 30 minutes". She goes and asks the woman who took my order (who passed me at least 4 times while I waited) who then grabs a Togo box that had been sitting by someone's apron for about 25 minutes. I had seen it there cause I went to the cart for sugars. I took a pic after 30 minutes cause I was concerned it was mine. I asked for a remake cause I told them I'd seen it for 25 minutes there at least. Woman goes to back for MAYBE two minutes, and hands me a box. I watched them steep my tea for maybe 2 minutes again. No compensation offered after the 40 minute wait and forgotten order. Not surprising the tea tasted like water. The Tartine was good, but for $16 I got ONE piece of untoasted bread, avocado, greens, drizzle and crumbled cheese. Not worth it in my book. Unsure how authentic location is. Baked goods questionable on freshness. I personally saw them taking macarons out of a sealed plastic wrapped packaging to put on the display so those are definitely not made there. Atmosphere was very loud, but it would be a great conversational place. I'm sure eating there would be a different experience than my order to-go. I went on a Thursday morning and there was a sizable crowd there by the time I left. This location especially "management" is disorganized and rude. Coffee is watered down if you ever get it. And a simple sandwich takes 30 minutes to make. Matines has been a favorite of mine for a long time. I love the servers and fee that the café is comfortable and very friendly. As I am writing this review there about fourteen (prospective) guest waiting for over ten minutes. The ordering process appears to be lengthy and intricate. There is only one space for a cashier. The drinks take a long time to get to the table and, sometimes, I do not have my coffee for my meal. I would say that the wait looks intolerable, which my cause future customers to go elsewhere. This will not change without another cashier taking orders. I want this café to thrive! Came here for a Saturday brunch and it's an adorable spot in Chestnut hill. The inside is small and quaint and there's an outdoor area for seating. There's a full food menu and coffee and also baked goods. There also a small area for shopping misc. french items. The food was delicious and the coconut coffee I ordered was made well where you can taste the coffee and it had a dash of sweetness and coconut goodness. The crepes were the highlight of the meal. Definitely recommend the crepes. They originally didn't get my coffee order correct, it was placed incorrectly. They did quickly fix it and allowed me to keep the vanilla latte . But the vanilla latte was bland and didn't taste flavored. Would love to come here again and try some more items. read more

I'm standing here watching the staff continue to be as careless and distracted as they were when the place opened. Every time I am here I see one or more customers wait forever for an order that was forgotten on a shelf, or has multiple errors because the cashier... multiple cashiers... can't retain more than two instructions. The staff is also off-puttingly brusque, made the more irritating by the reliable incompetence. Everyone is cheerful in line, increasingly grumpy during the wait after paying. I am not complaining on my own behalf, not any more; I have long learned not to engage the kitchen, just to get in and out with pastries. But just now a rather professional looking lady came up to the counter and politely asked about her order, she had to get back to work, and the cashier person actually said "oh, whoops, I bet it's been ready" and checked the shelf where a small box had in fact been waiting. Honestly, if management would ditch this dumb method of kitchen dumping orders on shelf silently to hopefully be noticed by cashier, that would go a long way towards improving how this place works. But no matter, they have discovered one formula to win in Chestnut Hill: coat the operation in a veneer of European sophistication. The croissants are not bad at all though. read more

I got the Lafayette, with turkey, brie, walnuts and pears on a croissant. Fantastic. Had a little side salad with it. Wifey had the Quiche Lorraine and it too was tasty. I order a drink iced, and it comes hot. I order take-out, and it comes on a plate for dine-in. This is a small yet beautiful cafe nestled in Chestnut Hill across the street from a bookstore and some art shops. The cafe itself can get quite crowded but they also have outdoor seating that's cozy and comfortable on a warm and sunny day. The service is relatively fast for how busy it is. My friend and I had brunch at Matines Cafe a few weeks ago when we were in Philadelphia. It's tiny but so charming. We sat outside, which was gorgeous and very comfortable. My friend and I ordered the same thing - their smoked salmon tartine (with cucumber, tzatziki cream, lemon pepper, olive oil, and augula), which was really good - fresh, bright, light, and delicious. We had a couple of coffees as well. There's a small shop at the entrance to the cafe, and the interior of the cafe is as cute as the outside seating area. The service was great. I spent the morning here with my husband to start my birthday and it was lovely and I am so so thrilled to have this business open in our community. They have been building the hype with the Chestnut Hill business district and it's been working because we waited in a line out the door in the pouring rain to have a chance to snag a coveted bistro table inside. We both loved our coffees (he went iced and I went hot) and breakfast sandwiches as well as our pan chocolat which brought us right back to when we got engaged in Paris. This is my 4th visit to Matines. It is a small but vibrant one room Cafe/Restaurant, with an umbrella covered outside eating area. The various coffee drinks have been good to excellent; my last visit it could have been in Paris. The staff has been small but attentive. You can either sit down at a table to order from the menu or wait in a small cafeteria-type line to order. One advantage of the line is you can see what pastries are available. Ambiance is a bit noisy, since it is a small room. You are right next to the next table, and conversation can easily be overheard. On two of my visits we sat outside; table service was fast. The more crowded it is, the service is slower. Inside as you enter there is a French gift area. I recommend that you try it for yourself!!! read more

A bit pricey, but seriously well worth it. My wife has been getting physical therapy just up the street three afternoons a week, so I've been taking advantage of that spare time to treat myself at Martine's. In a word: wonderful. I have celiac, and I am just so grateful that they always have a gluten-free baked goodie on the menu--usually cakey, sweet madeleines. They usually just dust them with powdered sugar, but on occasion they ice them with delicious white chocolate. My go-to these past several weeks has included the madeleines and a generous cup of latte--which I have to say is the best on the Hill. Service can be a bit slow, but worth the wait, while you sit at your little table, backed with comfy throw pillows, listening to tunes in French from the likes of Édith Piaf--or in one case, "My Way," which is even more overwrought in French--over the PA system. Please drop by. Lunch hour can be jammed, so plan accordingly. But later in the afternoon, you'll usually get a table--or you can dine al fresco at a table outside. read more

Parfait is HUGE, and lorraine quiche is fresh, hot, and fluffy (the egg part felt fluffy and soft like Japanese style dessert). I'd definitely come back. The only minor downside is that the tables are tiny, and there isn't a lot of room to put your stuff down (particularly in the winter when you have a giant jacket, scarf, gloves..you get the point). I had the ham and Swiss sandwich with bacon. The crispy bread was amazing and the grilled meats were very tasty. The service is great everyone orders one at a time at a central location so there is not need to deal with a waiter. Service moves quickly. I went in the morning after a meeting so all the moms were there with their 2 year olds. So if you don't mind the patter of little feet you will be fine.
