The bathrooms are as original as they can make them, while addressing the need to be ADA compliant, and updated where necessary, and the furnishings are "period" from the 1950's or earlier. Please remember, this is a retro motel. There are no TV's, there is no pool, the is no "free breakfast". What you will get is a safe, clean comfortable room and a good night's sleep just like grandma and grandpa when they were traveling across country in their DeSoto. The 1930's-40's vintage sign is a work in progress, so despite what it says, there is no Color TV, there is however one concession they have allowed for; there is Wi-Fi.

We enjoyed the indoor and outdoor water slides, something you won't find hardly ever. We played putt putt golf after. The entire perimeter of the property is dedicated to fun activities for kids. You can tell it is family owned and they take pride in it. From the fully stocked pool towels, the spotless rooms, the clean fresh scent everywhere, and the well maintained facilities and amenities - nothing here has been allowed to slide. Everything is open longer than other hotels, the service is fast and friendly, outside is well lit and spotless. Chain hotels around here charge more, and offer much less. I highly recommend!

They also had the softest sheets I've ever seen at a hotel. This place is right on the water and across from a gas station and dollar general. It is 5-7 mins from Coconuts for your bar/partying needs. Very close to several small bars and restaurants. Great location. They have boats and kayaks to rent if you'd like! Also the woman at the desk offered to pick us up if we couldn't find a ride and drank too much. I am not sure where to begin with this place. Unfortunately, we don't have any other options but to stay here when we are in town visiting family. The woman who runs this hotel is BEYOND rude! If there were any competition in this city she would be out of business. On a positive side, the grounds of the property are nicely groomed, nothing fancy but cute! They offer a few different rentals, BBQ pits, and a nice sun dock. The rooms themselves are fairly clean (beyond a few hairs) but again nothing special. Our room had a very musty smell, loud air-conditioner, lack of towels, low functioning shower, and to top it off a fly swatter hanging in the bathroom! Positives in the room were a fridge and a nice TV. The worst part about this location is the woman who runs it- absolutely rude, inconsiderate, and down right nasty! We were in the main part of the lodge this time. People were constantly lingering on the stairs. The door to our suite didn't even feel secure or safe, it jiggled on the hinges even when locked and bolted. We could hear every single noise coming from the hallway at all hours of the night. The lodge has SO MUCH POTENTIAL and incredible views, but it is straight-up out of the 70s/80s and not in a fun or nostalgic way. The bed was comfy, I will give them that. And there is a lot of stuff to do around the lodge campus; pools, spa, golf, restaurants, live music, and movies. We didn't partake because we honestly didn't expect much. So, it may be surprisingly glorious... but we didn't take a chance. We checked out 2 nights early from our weeks stay. Because we paid in advance, we did not get any sort of refund. I guess this is okay, we just went to stay with family, so it was all good. We had so totally hoped for a better experience. Sadly, we had a worse one. Please fix this place up! But once you get to know the people and history, you find the heart of a town that is so warm, kind and real. We love the vibe of this Iron Horse Hotel. It's so charming, unique, historic and is a one-of-a-kind find. Nichole was so friendly and helpful and puts a lot of love and care into this hotel. It's not your typical hotel--it's truly a unique old-town experience. The ceilings are high, the furniture is antique and the details are divine. Other than an occasional train (which is part of the history) it's so quiet and peaceful. We enjoyed our stay and if we are ever in the area again, we'd definitely stay here! After having dinner with friends in Columbia, we came back expecting to just chill at the Iron Horse but stumbled across a fun group at Dapper Daq. We had so much fun with them! In the morning when we checked out, we visited Christina's for breakfast and she made a wonderful spread. We left Blackwater feeling like we escaped the rush of highways, business chains and everyday life. Disclosure: there is no tv or shower--only a claw-foot bathtub. Now I have to dispute the charge. Don't book on line. The room stunk, the door doesn't seal when fully shut. You can hear everyone around you because it's poorly insulated and just a dirty property. I would never stay again, very disappointing for the 1st time at Lake of the Ozarks.
