It was done in a week and when I came back, not only did they reupholster the ottoman to perfection, they also made a slip cover with the extra fabric (at no charge), which fits like a glove when you slip it on. We are so, so happy with Edmond's work to reupholster a very sentimental item for us. My grandfather built me a child size arm chair and ottoman when I was young (pictured in red). He was a hobbyist woodworker but not a professional furniture maker or upholsterer. Despite that, Edmond was able to transform the amateur chair into the nicest piece of furniture I own! This review is long overdue. It's been over a year. *update* I wrote that a year ago, now it's been two. Two years and I'm still affected. Even more so because (in a covid pandemic world) my place is not only my abode but my workplace and I am constantly-smoothing-out-puckers on the couches they reupholstered. It sucks. It's a the couch faux pas, care of Elegant Design, and it just bums me out. Back then I got the ball rolling to file in small claims court, but it's taken me this long to write a review, finagling through a court system? Not happening. It still stands, whatever point in time, that they did an awful job on my couches. The LEAST I can do is write a review. My situation may have been an anomaly, there's only one other bad (James H.) review. He didn't actually get work done, though. I did, and can speak to the quality of Elegant Design's work on my couches and to the owner's treatment of me/the situation. Both rotten. To make a looooooong story fly (kinda): I was sold on the reviews and Edmund, he was a charmer. In retrospect, "Don't tell anyone I'm giving you this deal" and "I'm not really making money on this." are key BS words. I know this already, but I wasn't in a car shop, I wasn't thinking. Plus, he and his peeps offered me homemade food as they sat down to lunch. Awwwww. I wasn't crazy about having to pay or get the couches to the shop myself, but whatevs, "he's not making money on this", and I'm excited. I brought them in December, they were done in January. Great! They looked amazing. Great! I did notice the backs (cushions) were a little puckery and mentioned it. He said it just needed to be filled, zipped 'em open and stuffed some (foam?) material in it. Voila! ....fixed? I contacted him a few days later because I noticed that the seat of one of the couches was puckering. He said bring it in. I did. I'm not sure how he convinced me that it was fine, but he did. He ensured me that if I got home and it was still a problem, no problem, let him know. He gave me $20 bucks to cover gas, (awwwww) and sent me and my couch on our way. After sitting with (on) them for a few weeks I noticed that BOTH were puckering. I also noticed hanging threads. The back cushions in earlier question ...were a wee bit warped (that extra stuffing was no fix after all). SO, I let him know. This is where it got ugly. His charm gave way to nasty, condescending, dismissive and, weirdly, a gaslighting sort of approach that just pissed me off. We had quite the screaming match and the two of us were anything but polite. After demanding that I tell HIM how to solve the issue, he rattled off a list of sarcastic and absurd "fixes" and said that repairing the puckers with buttons was all that he could do. Buttons. I did not take my couches back to him. So here I am. I'll search for a place and get them reupholstered again. For now, I smooth out puckers throughout the day and just deal. FYI, the couches are vintage mid century sofas. I had them for fifteen wear and tear years and they NEVER, EVER puckered. They were mighty dirty, but they never knew a pucker. Other couches seem to have come out great for people based on the reviews, but if yours are similar to these... think on it. *These pictures are from when I FIRST got them, so you can imagine. read more

Just came here to clarify. Before bringing my chair, texts and photos were exchanged which is what the price quote was based on. The price negotiation was settled on after I came in to drop off my chair. That said, I would have happily paid more if the cost of labor and time was greater than he anticipated. Edmond never called or texted to communicate that to me in the three weeks he had my chair; he only gripped about it after the fact. So unprofessional. Additionally, as you can see in the photos, the threads were from the stitching, not the fabric. Otherwise, no complaints about the worksmanship. Edmond's clearly got some great guys on his crew. Just beware of the service and attempts at swindling. .... The craftmanship was rather decent, though many loose threads were left behind in the seams, as you can see in the photos. The customer service was truly bizarre and for that, I took my next upholstery projects elsewhere. I spoke with Edmond on the phone, and he quoted me $300-500 for upholstery and the refinishing of an MCM chair. Having called around, I knew this was already high, especially since I was providing my own fabric, but I wanted to get it done quickly, and he was the first person to answer my call. When I came in the shop with my chair, I was asked "How much do you want to pay? 500?" Uhhh... well, I want to pay what is fair, obviously. So I asked about the hourly cost of labor and how long the work would take - not a terribly strange notion? Edmond wouldn't tell me that though, and said it would be more if he calculated it that way. Ok fine. That didn't seem particularly credible at this point, but I wasn't about to go through the hassle of packing up my chair again. The bizarre attitude also happened when I picked up my chair. He mumbled about how much more work the chair was than he thought (ok... sorry? Isn't that what I asked about in the first place?) and then when I asked getting a price quote for the cost of redoing my couches (I'm working on my quarantine to-do list), which I had already purchased upholstery for from modernfabrics.com, his response - "Why did you buy fabric?" Because, I did? That's also not what I asked you... Why does it even matter at this point? I already bought fabric, and was not looking to be upsold. I know these are stressful times, and some people have bad days. As you can see from my profile I'm not someone that typically uses Yelp, but a little respect goes a long way when keeping your business going. read more

EDMOND IS INCREDIBLE. Based on yelp reviews I stopped in to his store to get a custom quote for kitchen bench cushions. We both wore masks and there was no one else in the store. He pulled out books and books of Sunbrella fabric and others for no sun fading and easy cleanup. He explained in great detail the options, and what he recommended. There were so many versions of gray fabric he graciously gave me samples to match some kitchen chairs. Edmond kept in contact with the building process including stopping by to make sure his patterns matched up. Final installation took no time at all. I've had a mid century danish Magnus Olesen chair that needed work for about five years. This year I did my research regarding profile look, fabrics and sizing of cushions. I then shopped around for an upholstery shop around my area. I found a few but hesitated to give them this job, since the chair was 70 years old and very expensive. Finally I found Edmond through Google and yelp. I called him up and he set me up with an appointment. Edmond gave me an A+ experience and attention. The appointment was basically a private appointment between him and I. He makes sure to give all his attention to detail as you meet with him. Works with your budget and what you want out of the final product. The chair came out exceptionally well done. Profile and quality of workmanship is of the highest quality. He even redid the wood for me and made an extra cushion over my springs to spread the impact evenly when one sits on the chair. I never asked for this but this is what type of artisan Edmond is. My own work is in Architecture, specifically the luxury residential development sector. So I know a good subcontractor committed to their craft when I see them and Edmond is exactly that! Since these chairs are so special to me and my family, I wanted to put them in the hands of a real professional, a real artist. I'm so glad that I found Edmond's shop because his work is brilliant! He refurbished and reupholstered these chairs with the upmost perfection! He put up with the complicated piping around the edges, all the twists and turns, and he did it for a reasonable price too! I wish I could give 50 stars, because once again, Edmond has rescued and restored our furniture. Our 20+ year old couch had been destroyed by our dogs. I wasn't sure if was worth saving. Edmond skillfully replaced the padding and the fabric and now it looks and feels like a very expensive new couch. There aren't enough superlatives to adequately describe Edmond's craftsmanship. I could not be more disappointed. I cannot speak of the quality of the work because he lost my business in two minutes. I walked in to an empty office. A man wanders in from the back with a confused look on his face. The first thing he says is, "Will you close the door, it's windy." So, I have to walk to the front of the store, and close his broken door. Then, with his brow wrinkled in concern, he asks, 'What do you need?' I show him the massage chair that I need reupholstered. He stammers his words while looking back to where he came from. I stop him and ask if he is alright. He says, "I have a lot to do in the back, can I give you a card?' No, you can't give me a card. You can learn from this review that the reason you have a business is to serve the customer. Will never return. read more

He goes out of his way to be specific, fair, transparent, and honest. This is my second FANTASTIC experience working with Edmond Shabani of Elegant Design. Five years back we brought some custom made chairs to him to be reupholstered and refurbished. He made them beyond good as new with the most beautiful velvet and top notch refinishing on the wooden parts. Even though they are in a sunny room and get daily use they still look fresh out of the shop. This month, we had a small project, a junky chair that looked like it should be tossed on the curb, but it had good bones and I saw potential. I took it to Edmond and he took as much time and care picking upholstery as if I'd come in with an entire house full of expensive remodeling. Thank you to Edmond and his team and the beautiful work they did restoring my grandparent's 100+ old antique chairs. I was passed down a table and 6 chairs that my grandparents used for every holiday dinner, birthday and important event. The dining set had been in the Bay Area and stored in plastic for the last 10 years. I recently received them from my mom who passed them down to me. We brought them to L.A. and this is how I decided to find Edmond to help restore them. As you can imagine the chairs are very important to me and the family so finding someone who we trusted was very important. I found Edmond through Yelp and I'm so glad I did. Edmond was very busy, but he took the time to reassure me he'd help me to make the chairs look nice and strengthen them for people to sit on and enjoy again. I spent time looking at patterns in Edmond's shop and he helped me by letting me take samples home to show my family. Since I was not in a hurry and didn't need the chairs by a particular time I dropped all the chairs off and when I made a decision on the pattern Edmond said he would take care of it. We agreed it would just be new seat cushions and strengthening to the chairs that needed it. He would keep the original patina that had occurred over the years and help to preserve our family history. After two months I checked in with Edmond via email and he said they would be done by end of week. When they were complete I received another email with photos of the chairs. They were beautiful. The amount was a little more than Edmond and I agreed upon. However, as he explained 5 out of the 6 chairs needed strengthening and he did the work he knew I would appreciate. After Edmond explained his process I agreed it was needed. My only suggestion was that I wish I would have been informed during the process so I was not surprised at the end of the the cost being a couple hundred dollars more than we thought. But, on a positive note, I know Edmond and his team put care into my family heirloom and I appreciate them doing that for me and my family. I would go back to Edmond and his team again. I had such an amazing experience working with Edmond to have my beloved 20 year old chair reupholstered. I first contacted him over Yelp based on his reviews. He responded within hours. I told him I was looking for a light green color and he responded with images of swatches that were what I was looking for. Due to the pandemic, in person visits are by appointment. Which I was very happy with. When I arrived both he and his wife put masks on. Once inside, Edmond pulled every swatch he had in the range of what I was looking for. He also gave me a tour of where he works (onsite) and showed me some of his current projects. I decided on a fabric that was slightly more than I had wanted to spend, but that was on me. I also wanted the foam/padding replaced. I had the chair for 20 years and I want to have it for 20 more so I was willing to spend the money needed for this. Edmond was also able to arrange for pick up and delivery of my chair for a reasonable fee. He ordered the fabric without even taking a deposit from me before he even had my chair. He's an honest guy who does top notch work. My chair was ready only a few days after it was estimated to be done. Sure, I could've bought a brand new chair for the price but I wanted this chair! I've been going to Elegant Designs for years, and am ashamed I haven't written a review until now. I pulled up to ask Edmond a question about Sunbrella fabric and the storefront was empty! Panicked, I read the note on the door that said they'd moved across the street to a larger space. Phew! Every experience I've had with them is great. They can match colors and textures of fabrics exactly (new puppy tore one cushion of my sofa completely to bits) and you can always swing a deal if you order more -- Edmond can get fabrics for less if you order a bunch and so eventually once my puppy became a dog and didn't eat sofas anymore, I had the entire living room set slipcovered (with individual cushions so it looks like a normal couch) with piping on the borders, and the old window seat cushion which was covered in a blanket got the same treatment. Pulled the room together nicely. The following summer I had them put Sunbrella cushions on my Target outdoor sectional set so that it looks like part of the Crate and Barrel patio set it lives with ... offwhite with black piping. Edmond asked me to bring in one of the Crate & Barrel cushions so he could match the color and piping dimensions exactly and even suggested we leave off the velcro stays on the bottom so as not to "waste a side" (who among us hasn't flipped cushions over to expose a clean side when company's coming?) all of which have held up for years with repeated washings, thanks to the hidden zippers expertly sewn in. Last time I was in there I saw Edmond in the middle of refinishing some beautiful Mission style chairs with a heavy putty-colored paint that looked terrible.. he saw my face and pointed to one that was already done: "look, it dries clear like this..." exposing its wood grain under shiny lacquer but protected as if painted in steel. It was one of dozens rotated out of a famous museum for refurbishment that regularly visits his shop. He's plenty busy in there, but always manages to finish ahead of schedule and always sends a text or two with questions or progress to make sure he's doing it exactly like you want. If you're thinking about getting a new sofa or patio set, look again ... it may just need a makeover! They can do it all and if they can't (leather car seat? hmmmm) they know who can. read more
