This is the absolute best place if your truly a beginner and trying to learn a new hobby I got my daughter and I enrolled in the beginner courses as she was so discouraged by her fashion class curriculum in highschool. Not only did this class teach us we can learn a new hobby and be proud of our work but it opened doors for so many things for us to make and learn! I'm so happy we found this place my daughter is 15 and I really feel like it boosted her self esteem and instilled confidence In sewing skills! First let me say, Paul's longarm work is wonderful. BUT.....I have never been so poorly treated in my life! I am a novice quilter. I misunderstood the difference between long arming and squaring off a quilt. This world is all new to me. I was made fun off by the owner of this establishment. She actually mocked me for apologizing for my lack of knowledge. I was insulted by the owner of this establishment. She accused me of "pushing her". She didn't mean it physically but somehow my not understanding made her so defensive and totally unpleasant! I didn't blame anyone for my ignorance. I am a work in progress quilter. Do not go to this store! The people are incredibly mean and really ugly to deal with. Once again, Paul's long arm work is wonderful. But I don't see how you can get past the lady in charge! read more

I found this beautiful boutique sewing studio (and community) on a friend's recommendation and I honestly couldn't be happier with the discovery! I came in as a total newbie- I had not really touched a sewing machine since my teens. The sewing studio really focuses on sewing classes, teaching sewing technique and helping sewing enthusiasts of all levels upgrade their skills. The owner, Lana, is not only profoundly experienced with sewing and quilting, but she also has a long history in pedagogy. I started with one-on-one classes with her, and absolutely loved her teaching style. I also just love her- she is a lovely person. I have also greatly enjoyed the group classes that are offered regularly- super fun! The teach things like hemming, small bag projects, etc. The fabrics here are second to none. Lana sources them from all over the world and she has impeccable taste. The colors, the weight, the feel, the patterns.... all are completely dreamy! Be prepared to spend some money, lol! Even though the prices are fair it is impossible not to snap up the gorgeous fabrics. The store also offers a "Sewing Circle" monthly membership that is a win-win. As I member I get a discount on fabrics and classes, as well as access to lovely studio time like the weekly Wednesday night "Sip N Sew," and the studio itself benefits from the regular membership fees. It's a great way to both support a local business AND build your own friend community. The women are amazing- welcoming and sweet and very generous with their knowledge. I love this adorable little fabric shop!! I first found Quilt & Things when I got it into my head to make a quilt, not knowing the first thing about how to do it... Though "Home Ec" sewing classes are available, I jumped right into Beginning Sampler Quilt and in no time at all was making my first and learning all the fundamentals. I've now made five, one of which was a very challenging paper piecing pattern. I've felt encouraged and supported through this entire journey, and I'm confident I'll be making more quilts in the future. The fabrics are so cute, really excellent quality and a rotating selection that's always creatively inspiring. Almost invaluable is the longarm service, the top stitching for quilting, which wasn't something I was going to attempt myself, nor was I interested in. I recently just finished the "whatever happened to home ec?" class with Lana. I had such a great time. I already had a little bit of basic sewing knowledge, but Lana taught me things that my previous teacher had never taught me. I loved that it was a two person class because I felt I got extra attention on my work, and was able to ask more questions than I am able to in larger sewing classes. Even though Darcy was not my teacher, she would also help me out on occasion in between her one on one clients. In only 6 hours of class I felt like I learned so much. I am hoping to take more classes with them in the future. read more

I came across the Quilt'n'Things website after two years of self-teaching attempts to sew my own garments by reading books, watching YouTube tutorials, and even taking online courses. After just one in-person class with Lana, the challenges I was having to work through on my own were quickly answered, and I haven't looked back since! I spend long hours in front of computer screens sifting through data sets as a clinical scientist, with not much room for a creative outlet. Lana is just lovely. I came in one morning with only a quilted top and no idea what to do next. Lana took the time to explain the next steps and helped me pick out backing fabric, thread, etc. She was patient and kind and I really couldn't ask for anyone better. The shop is adorable. It has some carefully curated fabric you can purchase, but most of the shop is dedicated to sewing classes. I like how clean and organized feel of the shop, which has a large window in the front that lets a lot of natural light in. I haven't gotten my long armed quilt back yet, but I'm very exited to see how it turned out. I will also be taking a private class with Lana to help me with the binding. I have never quilted before, and am only a beginning sewer, but the help and assistance I got here helped me boost my confidence. Can't wait for the next project! read more

I've been sewing most of my life, and in the last several years I've gotten deep into Quilting. I visited this shop at the old location a few years ago and and recently took an English Paper Piecing class at the new place. I've had a tough couple of years, but I've been doing better recently, so I took the plunge and signed up for the class. I had a wonderful time. Vicki was a great teacher, the other ladies were fun, and the shop had a great vibe. I felt like my old self again (and I've only put down the project to eat and sleep, basically). During the class, Lana was tending the shop while Vicki taught. This woman walked in with her grandmother (I'm guessing) and picked up a bunch of fabric. She asked for a *lot* of fat quarters to be cut and Lana told her she could either cut them to be picked up later, or call her husband in to cut the fabric, but wasn't able to dedicate the time required to cut three dozen FQs at that exact moment. The woman was pretty rude, so Lana politely asked her to leave. I was impressed. The customer isn't always right and companies should always be empowered to ask people behaving abusively to leave. This is a gem of a shop. I can't wait to take more classes and spend more time here. read more

I wanted to pick up sewing and found this shop! Lana is a wonderful instructor. she taught me the basics of how to use a machine and then guided me on how to make place mats and a tote bag. It really made me appreciate my clothes a lot more and the work that people put into them. Even though Lana's store front shop for the sewing studio has been closed for coronavirus since the middle of March she is still a neighborhood beacon. She is selling fabric, masks and mask kits through her Etsy shop - or just fabric and other kits to sew while at home. We bought 2 adult masks and 1 kid mask. They are great - 180 thread count with organic fabric and natural dyes. They're super cute and fit well. My sister out of state also bought a mask and a mask kit and she was impressed that they arrived very quickly. Lana also has programs to pick up free donated fabric, sew masks for hospital workers and drop them back off to be donated. If you don't sew (like me) she has a few hospitals that have requested her surgical caps so you can donate the cost of a cap and she and her team will sew it and donate it to hospitals. Way to step up and be a local neighborhood gem! read more

This is a sweet, warm quilt and knitting store nestled in a quaint old town part of Montrose. The Owner greeted me upon entry with enthusiasm and graciousness that made me feel right at home. I went in specifically to purchase fabric from V and Co. and they had the entire line that I wanted. I was very impressed with the selections she had for fabric. Cotton and Steel some Tula Pink and lovely Japanese imports, as well as your standard Kona cottons. Oh yes and she also has quite a bit of Liberty of London cottons, just so pretty!! The staff was also very informative and helped me make my cutting choices according to a imagined idea I'm working on. I will be back as soon as I can get there. It's worth the drive and after you can walk around the quaint area lots to explore. read more

I just got off the phone with Lana inquiring about setting up an appointment to possibly buy fabric from her. I told her that I had already viewed her website so I had some idea of what I wanted, along with wanting to look at some Nani Iro fabric (if you know anything about Nani Iro fabric, you know it's not cheap.) She told me that in order to be let in the shop, I had to guarantee that I'd buy at least $25 worth of fabric. I explained that I was looking for a specific weight of fabric and that I'm very tactile and didn't feel comfortable "guranteeing" that I'd find $25 worth of fabric, but would like to come and see what she had. She explained that she's struggling, I told her, "That's why I'm trying to buy from you instead of going somewhere else." She said that I could buy a gift card if I didn't find fabric. I also explained that I too have to be conscience of where/how I spend my money. She told me that I don't understand how small businesses work. FYI, Lana, my husband owns a small business, I know exactly how they work, and again, this is exactly why I was trying to buy from her - to help her business. Lana was rude to me when she had her shop in Altadena but I gave her another chance a few months ago. I've now realized that she's just rude. I probably would have spent around $30-70, but she preferred to be rude and lose a sale and a potential customer. read more

My experience at Quilt n Things is a testament of why it's better to shop small instead of at larger chain stores. Every time I've gone to Michael's or Joanne's, the employees are sullen and unhelpful, and I have a hard time making sure I get everything I need. For this reason, I actively sought out small sewing shops to help me start a new craft, which led me to Quilt n Things. I was greeted immediately by a few women, one of whom was Lana, the owner. I explained to Lana what I was looking to do (beginner's embroidery) and she helped me get all the materials I needed, explained to me what I needed and why, and answered all of my questions. She easily spent 20 minutes or more with me, even as the shop was closing. I was introduced to another women, Carlyn, who does amazing traditional indigo dyeing and Sachiko embroidery, and she was also sweet and helpful. What a great experience! The shop is well stocked with materials for all your fiber art crafts, and they offer group classes (like a monthly stitch and sip) as well as 1:1 classes. The fabric selection was amazing! So many cute patterns and colors! It made me wish I could sew so I could do something cool with all of that fabric. The prices are reasonable too! Shop small, shop local. I first shopped at this shop around ten years ago. The previous owners were not very nice (unless they knew you were just about to drop a ton of cash). I was in my early twenties and was ignored when I walked in, as I shopped, and was rushed out when I paid. All they offered on fabrics were dark "prairie" colors, civil war reproduction type prints and a couple of novelty prints. I stopped shopping there. Fast forward to this afternoon. I heard there was a new owner and that the new shop was better. I walked in this afternoon and it was night and day. This shop is much brighter, warmer and everyone was super friendly. Lana, the new owner, was there and was super nice. The fabrics now lean to a much more modern aesthetic (YAY!!) but with enough traditional fabric that this store caters to both traditional and modern quilters. They even have ethically made organic cotton fabrics. Last but not least you can now get wool felt and roving as well as a great selection of yarns (including hand dyed organic cotton). The change in this store is night and day for the better. This store now has a new loyal customer :) read more

This is such a great local shop! They carry amazing lines from designers all over who do their best to make their work stand out. The shop is vibrant and there are always new items for sale. Quilt N Things Fiber Arts is more than a fabric store. They will long arm quilts and they also have classes by Mary Ellen who has a great eye for color among other textile talents. The parking is right in front and there are many events throughout the year hosted by the shop. They have a Sew Local Membership club too! I initially reached out to Quilt n Things inquiring about done-for-you projects since I wanted to transform some t-shirts into a quilt. After talking with Lana on the phone, she encouraged me to take a few private lessons so that I could learn to make T-shirt quilt myself and have the knowledge to make more in the future!
