The first time…read moreI went (like 10 years ago!) there was a sign about mountain lion sightings so I didn't hike. I was there very early and alone. The second time John was with me but we didn't go very far. This time we planned on hiking half way because it was an unplanned trip and we didn't have our normal hiking equipment (the right shoes, clothes, water bladder, etc). However, just two miles in is enough to show how amazing this trail is! The views are out of this world. Like heaven on earth. We encountered tons of wildflowers and Tule Elk. They were so close to us that we had to wait for them to move so that we could continue on the trail. When we got to our planned two mile mark, we both wanted to keep going. Despite the steep inclines in a few parts, the trail is quite easy--at least for the first two miles in. But we decided to turn around and promised we would return and finally complete this amazing trail. Now I know why this trail is one of the top most popular trails in the Bay Area.

Gorgeous out and back hike along the spine of Tomales Point!…read more I have been recommended this hike for years and am so psyched I finally got to experience it! Accessing this hike takes some finesse - parking is limited alongside the Pierce Point Ranch, so aim to arrive earlier in the day, as parking packs up quickly! The trailhead is located within the Tule Elk reserve, so dogs are not allowed. The road leading to the trail passes through Point Reyes Station before winding through Inverness and up a pitted farm road until it ends at the trailhead. I started my hike at 10am and though the morning was clear and warm, the trail itself was a bit squidgey from spring rains earlier that week- come prepared with a change of shoes and a towel to wipe off any mud. The trail itself meanders through a low lying brush with sweeping views of both the Pacific ocean and Tomales bay. There is a fair amount of rolling elevation change, but plenty of gorgeous spots to stop and catch your breath For me, the highlight was seeing the tule elk basking in the sun overlooking the ocean! Definitely worth the trek and the hype.

It is incredibly scenic and peaceful, with long stretches along a high bluff overlooking Tomales Bay and out toward Bodega Bay. The views are wide open and hard to get tired of. The trail starts off flat from the parking area for about ten minutes, then climbs gently for a short stretch. After that, it levels out before rolling up and down toward the end. It is a comfortable hike with just enough variation to keep it interesting. You will likely see Tule elk along the way, sometimes with full antlers depending on the season. Bird Rock is also an early highlight, and to the west you have the endless Pacific Ocean. We have done this hike several times over the past couple of years, and it still feels just as impressive each time.

I guess they were famous for their butter. Gee, maybe they could've set up a butter shop here to entice visitors to come here. Like a Casa de Butter versus a Casa De Fruta (review: https://bit.ly/3GpsrmS). Instead, there are interpretive signs which describe the history and function of the various buildings in the ranch complex. But let's get real. The only reason I came here was that it serves as the starting point for the Tomales Point Trail (review: https://bit.ly/3GpsrmS). The ranch just doesn't have enough to be an attraction on its own. We ordered the Coastal Tacos (rock cod) and Fried Chicken Sandwich. At first we were concerned that it might not be enough for us, but when the food came, we realized our worries were for naught. Both the tacos and the sandwich were quite large and also quite messy, but if a taco or fried chicken sandwich is not a little messy, it's probably not very good! The decor retains the flavor of the building's roots. I seem to recall reading that it was a stage coach stop (or railroad stop?) during an earlier life, which is completely believable since it was built in 1864. Rustic, but with some modern touches. We plan to stay at the Valley Ford Hotel again, and when we do, we'll wander down the stairs to Rocker's Roadhouse for dinner. I hope there's oyster Po' Boys on the menu by then!

Somewhere along the line yelp reviews for Rocker Oysterfeller in Valley Ford became yelp reviews for Rocker's Roadhouse prompting this update. Ages ago I happily awarded 5-stars to Rocker Oysterfeller but when I came to Rocker's Roadhouse for lunch on a recent Monday afternoon things were decidedly not 5-star. The bar area that one enters first had no patrons despite a table of dirty dishes remaining. When we announced we'd like to stay for lunch we were asked to wait while a table in the dining room was cleared. That's exactly what was cleared: one table in the dining room. There were two other tables of customers in the dining room and now a single clean table. Every other customer-free table in that room was stacked with dirty dishes left by previous customers. This wasn't just unappetizing. It was disgusting and we opted not to stay for lunch. I'm hoping this was some sort of aberrant situation as opposed to standard operating procedure. C'mon Rocker's Roadhouse, get your act together.

In my opinion, one of the most beautiful places in all of California and if it is low tide, there will be many starfish visible on the rock formations on shore lower section which is normally submerged! If you get a good sunset, this place cannot be beat for photos overlooking the water with those rock formations.
