A friend of mine has been telling me that gold is an important investment vehicle as a hedge against a future weak dollar, for various reasons, so I decided to investigate what the value of a piece of jewelry might be, if I were to sell it. At first I did not know how to even buy or sell gold. I went to several other establishments, including a big box American jewelry store, a couple of other small jewelry stores and a coin store that advertises that they buy every kind of gold and silver. The owner of Amber Jewelers gave me the best price for my necklace, almost 50% more than the lowest price, and spent time explaining to me in detail how he calculated the price when I asked. The big box store asked me to put my gold in the mail to some facility far far away! and many other jewelers don't even buy back gold at all. Sorry, but mailing gold seems like a pretty bad idea. Another store scratched my item against a rock in order to do a chemical test without asking me, which was shocking. This guy could tell from experience what he was looking at. This is something that I never considered before about buying gold. From now on, I will never buy gold jewelry from anyone who treats it as merely a product and not like the standard of currency that it should be.
