The three-year-old class had ballet bars set up in the center of the room at the perfect height for those little girls. The class size was small (about 7) with two teachers. Each girl received individual attention while the instructors worked on their steps. Parents remained outside the room with only a small, one-way mirror to observe the class. Even during shoe changes, we weren't allowed in. I was way okay with that! The instructors made sure the girls had their tap shoes on and tied before starting the second half of class. Along with cute foam circles to make sure each girl had her own spot along the bar or along the side of the room and personal instruction, there was a time for some free dance with the lights dimmed and small sparkly tree branches to hold and twirl. It was awesome! You can tell Jennifer Hansen is serious about her academy and her dancers. We are loving it!

Observing how the studio runs from enrollment and class evaluations to the recital and opportunities for dancers for the last year and a half has been a TREAT. Each faculty member truly LOVES what they do and LOVES these kids. There is loving professionalism that permeates each classroom. Unfortunately, not all girls are made of sugar and spice and bullying became such an issue that we brought it to the attention of the director. To my understanding though, these girls come from families that support the center, so the director decided to not address the issue. So after 10 years of ballet, this is how it ends. They have multiple classes for adults at varying levels. The instructors are very nice, knowledgable, and will work with you at whatever level you're at. I've been to a few adult classes at different studios. For the beginning class here, I wouldnt say it's the best. I believe in the beginning class you should be working on technique and the instructor should be helping you and correcting you more. This is more of a for fun class to get you started in dancing. It's not as serious as the other levels which some people might like. The other level classes after the beginning level are much better. Here they focus on your form and everything else. The instructors are paying attention to your lines more and offer more constructive critism. These classes I think are better if you want to learn more, work on strength and flexibility, and do more dancing.

Salt Lake City Ballet is a great studio for adult ballet students. They offer classes at every…read morelevel and even offer a Truly Beginning Ballet class. This class is great for newbies who (watched a few episodes of Breaking Pointe or SYTYCD and) are curious about ballet and want a welcoming environment where they'll feel comfortable dipping their toe in the water. I've studied ballet at an advanced level and I've been able to find a challenge in each of the classes I've attended--from beginning/intermediate to intermediate/advanced. The instructors I've experienced (Hillary, Patricia, and Amy) are top-notch and friendly with their feedback while being constructive. Similar classes at RDT will run you $12 (plus downtown parking is a nightmare). The classes at SLC Ballet are $10 drop-in rate or you can purchase a punch-card that brings the classes down to $8 per 1.5 hour class (and parking is a dream so you don't have to worry if you're running late). I've been able to build up my strength, stamina, and flexibility again, and I'm looking forward to advancing these skills even further with the adult classes at SLC Ballet. I highly recommend it. The first class is complimentary, so you don't have to take my word for it; you can try it out for yourself.

I had recently moved to the area from California and didn't know anyone or of any activities to put my kids in (I have twins boy/girl and they had just turned 2). With us not knowing anyone, I wanted to get them involved in different things to find out what they enjoyed and hopefully find their "niche". My daughter started when she was 2 (just turned 2) and her very first day, my husband took her because I was at work still. The owner, Tammy, explained to my husband the nitty gritty of the studio and the option for her to compete at one competition as well as the end of year (they also do Christmas but she joined after). Of course like most husbands, they listen and retain the information but don't always do the best job of relaying the information and I'm the type of mom that has a lot of questions and is not afraid to ask. I figure the more I know the less chance to get frustrated/confused down the road...but again, that's me. Tammy was more than helpful-- I was blown away and have never forgotten that day. She talked about the competition at Lagoon and I had (obviously) never heard of that and had no idea where it was. She helped explain where it was, the distance, what it would be like -- and this was my daughter's first day at this studio -- and she was 2...TWO! My daughter was on the shy side so I really wanted her to interact with other kids her age besides her brother and this studio was a perfect fit -- so it didn't matter to me that we drive 30-40 minutes ONE WAY once a week. The following year, I signed my son up as well -- to be honest, I was less interested in him learning "dance" and more interested in him getting involved. While he wasn't shy -- he was shy when he was put in something out of his element. This year my twins had a teacher named Erin. To say that she is patient is the most understated compliment I could give her. While my son was not the fun-loving 3 year old that would run around class being silly - he didn't want to be there and he kicked and screamed (literally) and Erin just kept talking to him as if he was acting like the most obedient kid in the class. Tammy (the owner) was so amazing and told me that it would get better. Let me be clear -- it didn't make me sad or hurt me in any way that he was acting like that - he was embarrassing me a little because of his anger and uncooperative attitude. Let's fast forward...my son LOVES Erin still to this day. She never gave up on him and I think that created a very very special bond. She also has an amazing bond with my daughter. I cannot even describe what that feels like as a mother. Now, this year...they are 4. They have yet another amazing teacher, Nery, who pushes them to develop their skills more because they're getting older and they understand things a little more. She's fun with them but she is amazing at keeping them focused. As a parent, you want to know that your kids like who they are with when they are not with you. I have had nothing but a wonderful experience with that. So...so far owner (Tammy) = A+; Teachers = A+++. Oh, they also have cameras so you can watch your kids while in the waiting room...so you can see how your kid(s) are behaving even when you are not right there! If you are the type of parent who is just looking for a break from your kid for 45mins -1hr - this may not be the place for you. Now, if you want a break from your child AND want them to get SOMETHING out of this - whether it be social skills, learning dance skills or just learning to be a good human - THIS is an amazing place. Kickin'it ALWAYS does well in competition so there's a sense of pride having your kid dance here as opposed to other studios. Fees are reasonable and they offer multiple options depending on how much involvement your child wants with their programs. It's a big commitment in time, effort and expense if your kid wants to go down this path but it's no different than soccer, snowboarding or whatever else you decide to support your child in. I don't care for the beauty pageant feel of the competitions. It's a culture that I haven't been exposed to before but I suppose it boils down to different strokes for different folks. I'm just as different but in a drab and dowdy sort of way...

Some people like the African dance more which is more of an interactive class with live drums. The moves are more basic than Bollywood which is more choreography based. Love the instructors! The price is similar to other dance classes (10 punch card for $100, unlimited time!). The only thing I found difficult is finding parking since it's downtown. I had to pay $8 for a parking lot nearby. So not sure what the parking solution there is but I love the studio!

The studio is beautiful and has a professional dance floor which feels great on my (older dance) body. The live percussionists made the experience complete. This was my first African class and I'm addicted! Class prices are so affordable compared to other adult offerings in the area. $12 drop in for a 1.5 hour class. Other studios charge as much as $17 - $20 for a single hour! The only criticism I have is that the class actually started 10 minutes late. There is no designated receptionist or administrator to take payments so it looks very stressful for the teachers to try and keep track of everything all at once, especially when students swipe their own card for class payments. The credit card machine didn't like some of our cards so I was forced to pay cash. The cash I had on me was for something else. Overall, good experience, I would go back but knowing that check in is a nightmare.
