After receiving a total of 5 quotes for 3 large windows in my living room area I decided on Elizabeth Shutters for a few reasons: 1.) David Hirsch was professional and understood that I wanted to match EXACTLY what I had in the room immediately next to my living room. (I was not being "sold" on why plastic was better than the wood I wanted as I was with the other sales people) 2.) ES could match EXACTLY my current style and color 3.) Price was fair 4.) CAUTION-MULTIPLE REFURBISHMENTS REQUIRED This is a summary of my frustrations with Elizabeth Shutters I ordered 4 door openings (8 panels) at a cost of about $8,400. The doors look great in photos at the presentation and the sample that is shown in home. The salesman is an experienced guy in the Southern California market. I gave him a 50% deposit when he wrote up the order. I was excited to get the doors delivered but immediately saw numerous paint flaws (see photos) - debris baked into the paint or painted over. Dust in the paint. Rough edges. Nail holes in the side of the doors. Dents in numerous spots. I rejected the first order. Given all the inherent defects I asked for a refund. The response was that paint defects are inherent to wood products. The salesman said that I was looking for "microscopic" issues but the paint defects were immediately visible across multiple panels. The doors were refurbished and redelivered. Once again, the doors had debris stuck to the door panels and painted over. The salesman told me that I had been right to reject the first order but questioned rejecting the second delivery. I sent more photos to the company with the defects circled. On follow up, the salesman said that "you shouldn't expect perfection" and that the doors, including the dust dirt and debris in the paint met "industry standards." The office told me that I needed to stand back 6-feet to look at the doors so I would not see the defects: "Another common test is to stand back four to six feet to determine whether a flaw is visible to the naked eye." Trust me, I could see some flaws from 10 feet. When I pushed back on the door defects they went a bit legalistic and quoted the CSLB: "The doors are a custom-ordered/made product. We spent all of the deposit and much of the remaining balance producing and (attempting to) install the doors. Barring a failure to meet contractual or regulatory standards, they are not returnable or refundable. We believe the doors were manufactured to the standards dictated in our contract and by the CSLB." Basically, they pee on your leg and tell you its raining. I was repeatedly told that I was just seeing things and my standards were too high then suggested I was just trying to get out of the order: "We are uncertain at this point whether your expectations for your doors are unrealistic, or if the bigger issue is that some time before delivery you decided you no longer want them." On the third delivery once again there was dust and debris in the painted door surfaces. This time I had the salesman on site to show him these issues. I questions why after 2 refurbishments of the original doors that there was still dust, dirt and debris in the paint. He assured me that once the doors were installed, that the installer would patch and touch up/paint the doors. I questioned how we were going to get a uniform finish when they are painting doors that had been sprayed on site. He said that they paint the doors at the factory in a paint booth but that dust dirt and debris getting in the paint is an inherent part of the process and that California air quality regulations made it very hard to keep dust out of the paint. The bottom line is that you can't look close at the doors when they are delivered to your house because according to the company that is the process and "you can't expect perfection." If you point out problems they will tell you "it's a tree, and it won't be perfect..." When I pointed out that the problems have everything to do with their paint process, they say essentially "tough luck" and "stand back 6 feet. The salesman at the install today told me that he was going to show me the sample panel that he showed me on day 1 to show how it too would have paint defects and imperfections. I would have never given him a deposit if he had showed me a sample with all the problems that have been part of this process. I was excited to get these doors. I hope that the install today finally solves these problems. However, if the salesman had stood in my kitchen and told me that I would get 3 deliveries of defectively painted and refurbished doors it would have been unlikely I would have used Elizabeth Shutters. read more

Welp, a nightmare so far. We placed the order to get all our interior doors replaced in June. After 2 visits for measurements over as many months, we finally got an installation date after zero communication for 2 months. The doors arrived, but with only one person to do the installation. There was no way he could it done in a single day -- but that didn't matter since the openings cut out for the door hardware were in the wrong place for almost all of the doors. Those doors had to go back and now we're waiting for another couple of weeks (they say) to get the doors redone. We'll see if the doors get installed before Christmas (SIX months after the order). Be warned-this business is a joke, and will frustrate you to no end with unqualified installers and poor product My husband is a contractor but too old to make and install plantation shutters. When their installers arrived my husband had to tell one of their guys how to do a tricky install in our den They tore off paint in some rooms, left big nail holes open, did not go bacK and fill in. They did not deliver all the shutters ordered as their truck was too small. Said they would have to return the next day, an inconvenience for us! We called to complain to the designer, she could care less about our problems. Called factory to express our disappointment, to be told we were complaining over items that were of no consequence. They were scheduled the next day to finish the job. We had resigned ourselves that the ruined paint and huge nail holes would have to be fixed by ourselves. To our utter disbelief they did not return with the balance of the order, and told us over the phone we were the type of customer that usually does not pay the balance of a job. I was in the process of redecorating and looking for sand blasted shutters. A family member had recommended Elizabeth Shutters, but unfortunately they did not carry this type of shutter finish, so I went with another vendor. Long story short, I waited three months, was told the product was in production, and in the end I no shutters. I turned to Elizabeth Shutters. Though I couldn't get the sand blasted finish, I did get beautiful plantation shutters for my bedroom, a guest bedroom and a bathroom. The process went very smoothly. I was kept informed every step of the way, and, as promised, the shutters were installed six weeks to the day of my ordering them. I had a great experience with ordering shutters for my house on two separate occasions. I loved the look so much when we first purchased for living room and bed rooms, that we then ordered for family room. These are expensive, well made shutters. I ordered the large slat style shutter...which to me has a "cleaner" look. Deb was a pro, and so were the installers. I had estimates from 2 other companies. One was costco. I've had my shutters now for several months, and they're beautiful. The installation was professional, clean and fast. I had one problem, but I caused it. I was cleaning one of the windows before the installers came. I broke the glass as I was cleaning it. This disrupted the installation on one window until I could get the window repaired. I offered to pay for the installers to come out a second time to finish the installation, but I wasn't charged. Elizabeth was very kind about helping out. We recently had shutters installed/built by Elizabeth Shutters and I was extremely pleased with the finish and the installation. We looked at two other companies and Elizabeth Shutters was able to match the lowest bid. Elizabeth Shutters is also the only one that can do a shellac finish and this was important in our decision. The stain that they matched turned out beautiful, although the first sample wasn't to our liking, E.S. wanted to make sure we were completely happy and they ended up sending us a perfect match. I was looking for some shutters for a patio slider and found this company in one of those mailers we all get where companies advertise their services. I called for an estimate and they came out within a couple of weeks. The sales person was friendly and arrived on time. She gave me a quote that I thought was waaay too high; actually more than the sliding door cost me. I politely declined and called a different company. The other company came out and gave me a price that was 3x higher than Elizabeth Shutters, so I guess their prices were not that bad. I tend to over-analyze and thus over learn before purchasing what I consider an investment that we will have for years. You will see the shutters every day, and you will want them done right. I shopped the "big" competitors and the "gee-whiz I'm a local guy you can trust." Who knew there was so much to learn about shutters? Some key points. Custom shutters vs. standard size shutters. Do not go with "off the standard shelve size" shutters. If you hear that, show them the door. Any contractor will tell you there are standard size windows, but after the windows are installed, the box around the windows is different sizes. Unless you want the windows or shutters to look strange, you need custom shutters. I could go on about materials and the building of shutters. Did you know the type and depth of the connection from the rod that opens the shutters to the shutters make a huge difference? I also wanted to go with a company that has been around through the tough years, 2007-2010, so their "Lifetime guarantee has teeth. Finally, and most important was customer service. They did what they said they would do and when they would do it. They kept us informed along the way with an estimated time frame and updated actual time frame. By the way, it had to pass my wife's standard of looking gorgeous, and they do. You can not beat Elizabeth Shutters for the quality and price. read more

Sorry that I can not echo previous reviews. Bottom line is our experience with Elizabeth Shutters has been one of the poorest experiences we've ever had when it comes to work on our house. They are about to come out to our house for the fifth time since the installation to repair their shutters. It hasn't cost us money for the repairs but my feeling is their product is shoddy and the person who came out to do the measurements has no clue. I would never use them again and told them to remove us from any list of references in the event they gain new customers by referrals. If you feel like reading what I believe are valid "gripes," see below: 1) The little piece of wood at the bottom of the windows which contains the "clips" to close and secure the shutters are so high up on the sill, it makes it impossible to pull out the windows. In essence, when we clean the windows, we need to unscrew the wood to get them out.Note at the original installation, they permanently secured the bottom wood. The repair guy had to come out to make the screw visible so I can pull them out. It is a pain in the neck and, heaven forbid, if we need to get out of the house quickly thru the window, our only option would be to smash the window out. Too bad I noticed it the day after they left. Even the repair man said it was a poor design choice. 2) The "accordion" shutters that open over our 12-foot sliding glass door have needed to be repaired several times. They fall off the "runner" at the top just about every time we use them. 3) The shutters, when you flip them up to keep the light out, keep falling back down. 4) The sun is not kept out as good as it with heavy duty drapes. Expect any rooms facing east to be drenched with light no matter how closed the shutters are. I admit the shutters do look nice which is how we got suckered into this. But I would never, ever do business with this company again. I would tell my worst enemy to bypass this company. Update: June-2012 The company eventually came out to do all the fixes we required. Had a bump in the road when we got a call the morning of the first appointment saying the repairman had to cancel. It was an inconvenience but fortunately, the repairman who came out for the rescheduled appointment, took care of a couple things we did not originally request be done. We hear great things about this company and did have our shutters done with them . then just couple of weeks ago my husband called and told them that the shutter was cracking and needed to be looked at and repaired. Well for some reason they wanted a picture send to them and said it was water damage and it would cost 200 dollars. It was strange because there was no water damage and we told them this . They finally did send a man to come and repair and it was not water damage and it was just falling apart . It is not even two years old and we asked WHY? The repair person called the office told them it was not and to not charge a fee. The man did and after about two weeks we get a bill in the mail and they said the man was new and that it was to be paid for and then changed the story to moisture.. The man was not new and did know what he was doing. My husband called them back and as the story goes the lady wanted half of the money due because of the travel time and still said the man was new. I do not like companies that are back and forth on there word. The man fixed some other issue on the shutter and my husband agreed to paid 100 dollars as to shut her up and not make more out of this problem as to cause us a problem. I would never recommend them and go back to them. I like people who come to look first and then speak and not cry about the money. Bad firm and just watch out if you need a repair job on any of their products. So far the rest of them are holding and would really hate to have them repair anymore if needed to. read more
