I am so grateful to Casco Bay EyeCare! Last Spring, I had an accident with one of my eyes while…read moreshaving. It was scary, I thought I might lose my vision which was getting blurry and deteriorating in just a couple of weeks. Since I was on Cape Cod dog sitting, I drove up to the Mass Eye and Ear emergency room in Boston. What a shocking disappointment, their ancient equipment looked left over from the Civil War and their ER doctors were literally running from room to room. After that strange appointment, I was more anxious about my vision. Then I thought to call and make an appointment with Casco Bay EyeCare in Portland. I'm a long time independent Medicare agent and have lots of Maine clients who are happy patients there. A week later, with little sleep and stressed out, I drove over three hours for an appointment with Dr. Amy Cyr. I entered their beautiful Old Port offices, hopeless and exhausted. I asked one of the front desk gals for a hug. Dr. Cyr led me into her office which was so clean, her equipment looked brand new and as up to date as could be. Dr. Cyr put me at ease right away and said she could help me. She spent over an hour examining my eyes from every angle, with the latest equipment that Mass Eye and Ear ER did not have! I had one of the worst cases of dry eye Dr. Cyr had ever seen, my eyes were a mess with irritation and thus the blurriness. I left the appointment with hope restored and deep gratitude. I immediately began a daily regimen of preservative-free eye drops in both eyes several times a day, which I continue to this day. My eyes retuned to normal within a week of my appointment with Dr. Cyr. On a follow up visit a few weeks later, I brought a bouquet of flowers for my eye hero, Dr. Amy Cyr and the good gals at the front desk. To me, the team at Casco Bay EyeCare in the Old Port, are eye angels. Thank you, above all, Dr. Cyr and also Kaylin, Liz and Debbie. Thank you.

After some convincing they begrudgingly agreed. They did my two kids, but when they got to me, I noticed they held the PD machine at a strange angle and the measurement came back much different than my previous PD. I asked if they were sure they did it right and they responded with a very curt 'I know how to do my job' I got a more recent eye exam at a different place and they confirmed my PD measurement never changed and that the people at Casco Bay had botched the measurement purposely because I wasn't buying their glasses.

She was so professional and thorough making sure I understood everything. The techs were also great. Engaging and funny and very knowledgeable as well. What could have been stressful, was easy. Dr. Turrisi brought her small dog into my appointment without my permission. The dog had just come from the vet's office for some sort of procedure and was heavily medicated. Dr. Turrisi was very focused on the dog (as a pet owner I would have been too, which is also why I noted the unprofessionalism as odd but let it go). We got through the exam, and I asked about contact lenses. She advised me to where my glasses for a bit and then call back if I am still interested in contact lenses. She did not advise on a timeline and in retrospect I should have asked. I moved on and ordered my new glasses. After a few months, I decided I was still interested in contact lenses, so I called to set up the necessary appointment. I was told that I did not call back within 3 months so I would need another exam out of pocket. It was a few days over that allotted time. (To be clear this is their policy, which I understand as prescriptions do change but most insurance companies only pay for one exam a year). I am not upset about the policy, I am upset about the communication and lack of professionalism that followed. I was told she would check but it should be fine and I will receive a text message confirming my appointment. She quoted me for the fitting and the prescription at $155 with some help for my insurance. 10 days later I receive a text message letting me know I am scheduled for the exam and the other necessary items and that I will have to pay an additional $185 for an exam. I again called and was told, oh no the exam is not necessary since its is only a few days past that 3 months in our policy. I was also told that the person sending the text message works from home and she just doesn't see what we see here in the office. That was good enough for me. Today was supposed to be my appointment. I received a text at 9:30 saying my appointment was a half hour later than my original appointment. I was confused , so I yet again called and was told, my exam is first and then that is my second appointment for the fitting. I went back and forth with the receptionist who I know was just doing her job but was not helpful. When I stated that it just seemed like that were trying to get more money from me, she got upset with me and asked me to stop talking to her like that. I then spoke to the office manager who checked with the doctor who said she would see me but still would charge an additional $55 for a refraction which was necessary for the prescription. I am not an eye doctor and I am sure it would be necessary but it wasn't about the additional $55 or even the $185. The whole experience was pretty negative. I am fortunate enough to have health insurance and really the contact lenses are just a want and not a need. There really seems to be break down in communication in their office and the need to make money and their own personal lives seems to be more important than the care of their patients.

Despite feeling like I had no issues with my vision, I realized that given I pay for this insurance coverage (and have for the past nearly 6 years) I might as well go to make sure there are no concerns. I looked at my insurance and found Maine Family Eye Care as an in-network provider and in close proximity to my residence. I requested an appointment online and received a phone call a couple business days later to set up an appointment. Luckily, I was able to get an appointment the following day which was extremely convenient. The location itself is super cute and modern. It has a nice bright, open space which is very welcoming. As I walked into the office, I was kindly greeted by the receptionist who happily checked me in and walked me through the paperwork that I had to complete. After completing my paperwork, I was almost instantly called into the back. The woman who took me back assisted in performing a variety of tests which were to be provided to the doctor. The woman was extremely kind and made feel very comfortable and educated about the tests she was performing. After completing several tests, she brought me back to the waiting room to wait for the doctor as they were running behind on this specific day. I was in the waiting room for about another 15 minutes before being brought back to see the doctor. Dr. Elkinson was awesome. He was extremely friendly like the rest of his staff and provided me with a lot of education and tips to help ensure continued good vision in my future. Through my evaluation with the doctor I found out that I had exceptional (20/15) vision. After my evaluation, I had my eyes dilated and was sent back to the waiting room while the solution "did its thing". Unfortunately, my left eye was supper stubborn and required several drops which lengthened my waiting and stay. However, once it finally dilated, I saw Dr. Elkinson one last time and then was sent on my way. Given my exceptional vision, I was told that I probably don't have to come back for another 2-3 years! However, if I ever have any vision issues I will certainly be coming back to Mr. Elkinson as his staff and service was fantastic.

The selection of frames is great they aren't your run of the mill frames that are just cheaply made they are brand name well-made and fashionable glasses. The equipment used to measure your face for the perfect fit is awesome very high tech so you know you are getting the best and Josh is extremely knowledgeable in your vision plan and gives you several options. Dr. Elkinson was great as well, explains everything that he is doing while examining your eyes, VERY VERY thorough, and I could go on and on and on but it's definitely the best Optometrist office I've EVER been to.
