Black Pelican - Wednesday Special - Fried Chicken lunch

It has always been good, and we definitely won't let this deter us from returning. Ms T had her usual Shrimp basket lunch. The issue was that the shrimp were not cooked through. They were still translucent. We totally understand not wanting to overcook shrimp, but these were not quite done. On the bright side she commented on how good the slaw was. I have been on a kick to try barbecue at restaurants that are not barbecue joints per se, to see if I can find some hidden gems. For example, both Sam & Omie's and Wanchese Marina serve a good barbecue sandwich. Black Pelican, at least on this day, does not. I must say, the serving was huge. This was more than enough for two meals for me. The barbecue was dry and not well flavored. The texture and flavor was more like dried out beef that has been over-roasted. This is not something I would order again here. All that being said, I am leaving the rating for Black Pelican as it is because we have always had good meals here. I accept that it can't be 100% perfect every time and sooner or later we will run into something that is less than stellar. We will continue to return. I just know this not where I will have barbecue and we are sure the shrimp thing was just a one timer.

We beat the crowds and got a table on the upstairs patio. It technically looks out over the ocean, though from our spot, it was mostly a view of the sand! We ordered their famous recommended dish and said it was amazing. My Salmon was great too! The only downside? The service really went downhill after the food arrived. Despite being the only ones on the patio, our waiter never checked back in. A couple of waitresses were just hanging out by the bar on their phones, too. Eventually, one of them noticed our cleared plates, asked about dessert, and just brought the bill. No "how was everything?" or "can I get you anything else?"--which was a bummer for such a highly recommended spot!

Rigoletto reminds me of bakeries and delis back in New Jersey. Their food is always fresh. Today I…read morehad Spinach Ravioli and it was amazing. Lots of fresh spinach sauteed in olive oil and garlic with pillowy ravioli filled with a smooth cheese filling, I had sfogliatelle for dessert. The sfogliatelle (shell-shaped pastry) is worth a trip from Kempsville. In addition to the great food, I have to send a shoutout to Erin. I was meeting a friend, she was late, not reachable by text or phone, which is highly unusual for her. After a half hour wait I was convinced my friend was having a health issue. I thanked Erin, explained the situation to her, and left to drive to my friend's house. Needless to say, five minutes later (still in the parking lot), I got a message through Messenger that my friend was safe inside the restaurant. Erin volunteered her personal phone to help us out and was very kind through the whole debacle. Almost needed a daytime glass of wine to recover! (no go - driving) The restaurant is very cozy and welcoming. But I get distracted on my way to the table by the amazing pastry display! And they're not just pretty, they back it up with good taste.

The chicken parm is awesome, as are the mozzarella sticks, cannoli, and calamari. Sorry not pictures we devoured it. Portions are large! I'm going to have to make a stop for a meal. Highly recommend!

I thoroughly enjoyed the food and atmosphere at Vino. This is a great spot to take a date for a slightly fancier italian vibe and some good wine! They have booths, tables, and bar seating. The restaurant is open concept so you can see everything that's going on! The foods are served with such beautiful presentation and they taste very good too. We had the burrata for the appetizer and capellini pomodoro with meatball add-ons. Both were very delicious. The pomodoro sauce was nice and tangy but not overly acidic. And the meatballs were full of flavor and just the right saltiness for me. But if you're the type to add more seasoning, the tables come with pepper and salt so you can season to taste! The waitress we had was super friendly. Checked in on us only on occasion which was nice because my friend and I were able to chat at length without interruptions! :)

Once while dining in we had the arancini ball and it was ice cold in the middle, other times our food tasted just luke warm. Today we gave it another shot and ordered delivery after a long travel day and we were so disappointed, paid $10 for a ceaser salad and it was very small with 5 croutons and looked like the lettuce was just poured out of a bag you'd buy at the grocery store. The pastas were okay but nothing impressive. Expensive for what we got. I don't love leaving bad reviews but now that this has happened a few times here I feel the review was warranted.
