We liked Olives so much, we dined here twice in the same week…read more I recently visited the Outer Banks for a week with my wife and we stayed in Manteo. Prior to arriving in town, I had made a reservation for dinner at Olives for later in the week. The day we arrived, after we unpacked and settled into our rental, we decided to take a walk to explore as we were staying in town. We happened to walk past Olives and decided to look at the menu - and that made us want to go there that night as we did not make any plans that evening and didn't want to get back in the car. I spoke with someone at the host stand and made a reservation for us. I figured I could cancel the reservation for later in the week after we had dinner. (Spoiler: We decided to keep the other reservation.) The food and the service were both excellent. The first night, I had the tri-tip souvlaki which was a special and my wife had the chicken souvlaki from the regular menu. We started with an order of the dolmas and they might be my new favorite. We both enjoyed our dinner and a nice booth with a view of the marina. We ordered a piece of the baklava to go. The second visit, we started with the hummus appetizer and I had the Keftedes and my wife ordered the gyro. The keftedes was so delicious with the tomato-based sauce. Luckily I had some pita to dip in that sauce. My wife enjoyed the gyro and I enjoyed the bite I got to try. The restaurant has a few greek wines on their menu but not a lot of selection. The restaurant is on the smaller side but they do have a few tables outside in the courtyard which in the nice weather is a good option and helps with capacity. I do recommend having a reservation, though. Everyone of the staff were friendly and welcoming. Special thanks to Topanga for giving us some great tips on places to visit in the OBX.

We got takeout. Brussels sprouts (without the bacon) were delicious. Also got a mushroom pizza…read morewhich was very flavorful and good though I expected it would have more mushrooms. Would order again and probably try the margherita pizza next time.

The Pretzel was good, no doubt about that. All of the breads were very fresh. Unfortunately, everything got worse after the appetizer pretzel at our table. The hot honey on the New Yorker Down South functioned more like a sticky grease. But if not for the honey, I don't think I would've tasted anything at all. The service wasn't good either. Our waitress appeared to be getting frustrated just by those at our table asking questions. The only time she lit up was when she bragged about the two smash burger ideas she came up with that made the menu. She wasn't terrible, but maybe I'm just being nice considering I felt us being there was an inconvenience to her. When someone at our table asked to add lettuce and tomato to their burger, she replied that this isn't a build your own burger place and that she works at the Lost Colony where you can do that...but not here. It was odd. My family has gluten allergies which sucks...but when we asked if any desserts were gluten free she said the tart was the only one she was aware of. It might have been, but saying "aware of" led me to believe there could possibly be others but she didn't know and wasn't asking. Ok, I convinced myself, the service was bad. In fact, the place was practically empty and they stuck all 7 of us in a booth. My daughter who is extremely gluten sensitive has to cut off a piece of her pizza because the waitress bumped it against mine when she put it on the table. In her defense, we had no room for it. When the waitress brought back my youngest daughters Smash Burger (because they didn't put cheese or mayo on it) she could only fit half the plate on the table. So my 8 year old ate off a plate with half the plate dangling off the side...bizarre. I'm giving 2 stars because I believe the meal could've been better. Living in a family with gluten allergies and having none...I get how it can be frustrating (apologies to those gluten free...I get that it's way more frustrating for you). I'd probably stick with a pretzel, order a standard smash burger & do the beer sampler. If you're driving over 15 minutes to get here, probably safest to try somewhere else.

It has always been good, and we definitely won't let this deter us from returning. Ms T had her usual Shrimp basket lunch. The issue was that the shrimp were not cooked through. They were still translucent. We totally understand not wanting to overcook shrimp, but these were not quite done. On the bright side she commented on how good the slaw was. I have been on a kick to try barbecue at restaurants that are not barbecue joints per se, to see if I can find some hidden gems. For example, both Sam & Omie's and Wanchese Marina serve a good barbecue sandwich. Black Pelican, at least on this day, does not. I must say, the serving was huge. This was more than enough for two meals for me. The barbecue was dry and not well flavored. The texture and flavor was more like dried out beef that has been over-roasted. This is not something I would order again here. All that being said, I am leaving the rating for Black Pelican as it is because we have always had good meals here. I accept that it can't be 100% perfect every time and sooner or later we will run into something that is less than stellar. We will continue to return. I just know this not where I will have barbecue and we are sure the shrimp thing was just a one timer.

This was one of the few places that when we called around, didn't have a crazy long wait time so we ended up going here for dinner. The risotto was really good! The flavors were excellent and the seafood tasty. The portions were decent and I can see why it's one of their best selling dishes. I would totally get this again. The woodfired pizza was good but nothing to rave about. I got the Aloha one with pineapples, chicken, scallions and a white sauce. We got the bruschetta as an appetizer and that was really good - it also came out pretty fast. The rest of the food took a while to come out. The service was also not very fast. I might recommend this place from an ambience and historical perspective and maybe the food, but definitely not the service.
