*** DO NOT USE ELLESON'S BAKERY, SYCAMORE *** I ordered a cake on Tuesday, for pickup on Sunday. I called back on Thursday to cancel the order. They told me the cake was already made and that they would still charge me for it. I told them that they could not have possibly made a cake 4 days in advance and expect it to be acceptable. They said the cake was already made and they would still charge me for it. I told them to cancel the order. I called back today because I saw the charge on my statement. I reiterated the conversation to the manager, she said she had to talk to the owner. She called me back to advise me the owner confirmed that they would NOT refund my money because the cake was a special order. I said it was a yellow cake, how was that special? Because of the filling, I was told. So now you are telling me that you put the strawberry filling in the cake FOUR DAYS before it's to be picked up?!?!?! I don't know about you, but I think that's disgusting. 96 hours notice should be sufficient time to cancel an order!!! Especially when nothing is said about a cancellation policy!!! Shame on you Elleson's....BAD business read more

Seems like a solid place based upon first impressions. Specifically reviewing their donuts. Got there at about 6:30 and got my donuts without problems; staff were patient with my indecision and went about their business until I was ready. Got two donuts for $1.91, one cream filled chocolate frosted, one glazed cake with sprinkles. Basing their yeast donuts on the cream filled, they seem to have a slight bit more chew than other donuts, whether that is something you enjoy or not. Nothing to comment on for taste. It's a donut, that's it! Alright, I really liked the cake donut. Maybe because I'm a sucker for cake donuts, or maybe because they're doing something right. Seemed larger than a normal cake donut. Maybe it was just today, but I was disappointed to see NO chocolate cake donuts, my favorite. They had an absolute motherlode of different cinnamon roll kinds which I'm eager to try, though. The donuts are just fresh (at least early on), period. A pleasant aroma wafts out of the bag when you have it around. BOTTOM LINE: These are some dang good local donuts if you're not willing to take the journey to larger cities like Aurora or Rockford. EDIT: Got more donuts. The standard glazed yeast donuts are extremely solid, which tells me this is probably a good place. Their cinnamon rolls are very good, but I wouldn't recommend the maple frosted ones, personally. It clashes with the roll rather than blending flavors. I'll definitely keep coming back. read more

The quality of the bakery items here is quite good, but the employees have always been somewhat unfriendly and impatient.

The donuts and fritters were amazing, service was super friendly, and everything was reasonably priced. It is definitely one of my favorites places whenever I am in the area. I highly recommend this place. read more

One Saturday morning I decided to do some pre-dawn exploring. Sycamore has a really nice downtown area and I thought while the streets were empty I would drive around on my motorbike and make a list of places to check out later. To my surprise and delight I found Elleson's Bakery and they were open. Not only that, but they actually had seating available inside and out. I treated myself to a cream filled chocolate long john and a frosted sugar cookie. While I'm frequently disappointed with bakery sugar cookies I am always tempted to try them (perhaps it's just the images on them), but the one I had from Elleson's is probably the best I've had. I'm a big fan of trying to support smaller local business, so I can definitely see myself getting doughnuts from Elleson's in the future. They also offer other pastries and breads. Woman at the counter with bangs smells like cigarettes, and is extremely rude and short with customers. I greeted her and her response was "what can I get you". Horrible service, she made me feel rushed even though it was empty. I've since read reviews about this place and most bad reviews seem to be about her too. I keep promising myself I will bike there from DeKalb and earn myself a doughnut. Someday... meanwhile, I will continue to enjoy my unearned doughnuts from this great hometown bakery where they really know the word "quality." My favorite item is the cinnamon bread: it's a spiral log of cinnamon sugary sweetbread that makes a great treat for co-workers. This is a great family bakery. We always go there for donuts. They are excellent. Some people have commented about the staff but I have always found them to be very pleasant and I am not a regular. We have never been disappointed with anything we have gotten here. read more

I agree that the doughnuts are quite good. The service is horrific and plenty others have said the same; so the only conclusion I can come to is that they just don't care. I also cannot take an extra trip to an ATM for cash because you cannot get out of the Stone Age and accept credit/debit from your customers; yet another sign of your indifference to your customers. Since my stomach doesn't settle well with preservatives and additives, I have to make my own donuts. Which means Dunkin' Donuts is out of the question. If you like Boston Creme Pie type doughnuts, try the maple custard filled doughnut. It's ridiculous. Kinda wish they accepted credit cards, but the cash only counter gives it a more ma and pa feel I suppose. read more

I have been in twice recently for donuts, each time around 7:00 am. The first time, I took my 4 year old son with me. All I can say is RUDE! Whoever was working the counter, I didn't get her name, was incredibly rude and terribly unfriendly. Walking in, I said good morning to the lady at the counter, and told them that I wanted to purchase a half dozen. No response, just a very short "what can I get for you." I never thought that I would be so rushed to pick out donuts. My son was a little indecisive on what donuts he wanted, and it was obvious that the lady was not happy with it. Really?! He's a little boy, trying to pick out donuts. But again, it was painfully obvious that she had better things to do. After my son finally made his choices, she rang up our order. As I opened my wallet (to pull out CASH, since they still don't take credit or debit), I was immediately told "well we don't take cards." I replied "that's fine, I have cash." So I paid and left. That was visit #1. Giving people the benefit of the doubt, and thinking that maybe she was just having a bad day, I went back this morning after coming off of shift. I drove out of my way to stop here, as there are plenty of excellent bakeries to stop at along my drive from Joliet to Genoa. So in I went again, and wouldn't you know it, same thing! Unfriendly, rude, rushed service. I can't say it enough. RUDE, RUDE, RUDE! If I didn't have my doughnut selection chosen within 50 milliseconds, the woman was put-off and irritable. At least this time they didn't assume I didn't have cash, but probably because I had it out before she even rang up my order. Long story short, we won't be going back, ever. I've told family and friends to avoid this place like the plague and chose another local bakery that offers a friendly atmosphere, patient staff, and quality products. Especially with kids. After looking through other online reviews, I see that complaints about their unfriendly service go back over 4 years...obviously nothing has changed, nor will it change. And there never is any acknowledgement from Elleson's on any of their reviews, including Facebook. Hmm...makes me think that they really don't care about customers who come in and only spend $15-20 on doughnuts. I don't care how long you've been in business, how you're an 'icon' in the Sycamore area, or about the quality of the product; if you're rude, unfriendly, and rush your customers, then perhaps you should consider a different line of work. It's beyond ridiculous, and I'm beyond frustrated. I'll stick to Latsis Bakery in Genoa and other places on my route home. At least when I go in there I am greeted with friendly people who actually value their repeat customers and don't treat them like just another number in line of people. read more

very limited range of products, was looking for high end sweets. service was slow and RUDE. there were 4 women behind the counter, (one continually stroking her hair without gloves, one touching money without gloves) and the one who "waited" on me seemed as though i was bothering her despite the fact that i was purchasing $20 worth of cookies & cupcakes. the appearance of the products were comparable to JEWEL cupcakes/cookies, not "specialty bakery" items, and when i finally tasted them after getting home, wished i hadnt bought them at all. they were stale and hard! someone referred me to sweet dreams, where i was VERY pleased with the service, selection, quality and price. read more

On a recent visit, I followed the recommendation of the staff and got an eclair, cinnamon bread, and a chocolate long john. The long john was filled with sweet buttercream (may be too sweet for some) and the dough had a good bite and flavor. The eclair was filled with custard and had a slightly different bite to it than the doughnut. There was a perfect balance of the thick schmear of chocolate frosting, cream, and dough. Now, for the world famous cinnamon bread: I've had similar, but it is definitely not something I've had before. Once again, Elleson's hit the nail on the head with a good balance of flavors: cinnamon, granulated sugar, and baked bread. Not too anything (i.e. salty, sweet, etc.); just very good. I can see why some local diners use this bread for French toast. Overall, I was pleasantly surprised to find such a great bakery in Sycamore. It's worth dropping by if you are in the NIU/Dekalb area. Cannot believe I got turned away. I went in on a Saturday morning to order a cake for an upcoming party. I was told that they couldn't take my order because the "cake people" don't like them to take orders on the weekend...I am assuming that maybe the weekend crew didn't get all necessary info a time or two and now the cake people won't let them take orders...That being said... Grow Up and get over it. Figure out how to work together to best serve the customer. How ridiculous. I got told to come back Monday after 8 o'clock. UUHH.. I work. that's why I went there on a Saturday. Why don't the cake people come up with a spreadsheet for the weekend crew to go over with the customers to take orders. If something is missing, then CALL the customer to clarify. Don't turn them away. I said, "No problem." I went to Hyvee instead. Girl at Hyvee very helpful and within two minutes and a few questions I had my cake ordered. Shame on Elleson's for letting customers walk out the door. They do have great donuts but poor customer service will keep me away. read more
