This is a nice place to get a fresh meal. We dropped in for lunch. The interior is sprinkled with the work of local artists which you can buy. There are books to read (and you can drop some off too), games to play, and good food. We arrived and took a minute to take in the extensive menu. I had their Courthouse Blues, which is Roast Beef with Cheddar with some blue cheese on it - hot, and my wife had their breakfast bagel with sausage, egg and cheese. Once you order, you find a place to sit and they bring the food out to you. Fountain drinks and regular coffee get refills as long as you are there (if you leave no refills, which surprised me that they had to post a sign saying that, since it's pretty much the rule). Service was prompt and pleasant, the food was very good, and it's such a nice location with parking available in a lot to the west. What's not to love? read more

I tried Cessaroni's two days. Didn't like it cause the coffee was not good. Came to Shawn's today and had a ham egg n cheese croissant with coffee. Sandwich was delicious. I think this place has the potential to be good, but they fell short for me. My family and I had just wrapped up lunch around the corner, and we needed some coffee for an afternoon pick-me-up. I love coffee, but when I walked in, I lowered my expectations when I saw the bags and bags of different non-natural flavored coffee. I also lowered my expectations when the employee side-eyed me while she was cleaning up. As a note, I avoid swooping in just before closing. They were still open for 45 more minutes, so I thought I was safe. I ordered three lattes, all hot. I knew we were doomed when the employee that took my order asked the employee cleaning up to make the coffee. There was a communication breakdown, and I was handed three iced lattes. I generally do not like cold coffee, so I said something. As she returned to make new drinks, I realized she was not cleaning the steam wand on the espresso machine after each drink. I did not say anything because this order was already not going well. On a positive note, they gave us a free muffin for the order mix-up. I took one sip of my latte and felt the goober-like clump of overcooked milk floating on top. Then, I ended up tossing out my coffee. This could be a cool little place, but they must work on some things. read more

Came here with my girlfriend while visiting town for a friend's baby shower. She had been before and recommended it and I'm always game to try a new coffee shop, especially if they have good bagels! We stopped for breakfast on Saturday morning and it was busier than I would have expected for such a small town.They kept the line moving and our bagels came out quickly! I got an everything bagel with bacon cheddar cream cheese which was delicious! They didn't skimp on the cream cheese which I appreciated! My girlfriend ordered a cinnamon roll coffee that she said was amazing. I ordered an iced mocha which, the baristas forgot to make. By the time we finished eating I went back up to check on my latte and they made it immediately. With covid19 or without the bathroom had no soap 1rst time in upon arrival to wash hands so employees don't either? 2nd time in a obviously old soft soap bottle looked like it came from $store with just a little pink substance of soap at the very bottom of that lil bottle. The partition walls & soap incident had me turned off at the get-go, but I was meeting a longtime friend there so I suffered my way through a not that good a bagel. While there the rolling mechanism toaster started burning they stopped it so to me that is testimony the crumb remnants are hardly cleaned out. Always a nice change of atmosphere to go to a genuine coffee shop and get away from the commercial stuff. I love my coffee and Shawn's is a great example of a family owned bistro style restaurant that hasn't been taken over by a Starbucks. I have eaten lunch here before and it was great but I tend to stop in for a coffee in the morning, sometimes grab a muffin. They have a flavor of the day which is usually something interesting. Today it was S'mores flavored coffee. It tends to get a little pricey sometimes for certain things, but it's whatevs. Not a huge deal. Usually looks like younger adults and high schoolers that work here which is great to see some good work ethic. They're always super polite and make your order quickly. Have not found a better bagel anywhere. Bagels are light and crisp when toasted because I wouldn't have them any other way. I love a savory bagel and Shawns has a great variety of savory and sweet. My son ordered the choc chop cream cheese and I ordered the tomato basil. Bagel and cream cheese are the perfect pair here! They Do It right!!!! Oh and don't even get me started on the coffee!..... I was in the area for a class and stopped in the first time with some classmates for a sweet. The peanut butter rice crispy treat is big enough to delight about 5 people so be ready to share. The second visit included my husband, where we chowed down for breakfast. I had the oatmeal and Colombian coffee and he had the bacon and egg sandwhich. The oatmeal with pecans was absolutely awesome, due to the suspected butter add-in. Sneaky! And the coffee was okay. The location is great if you're in the downtown Sycamore area. Coffee and menu are awesome. The problem is he employees. They always seem confused and if your not a regular, good luck! I ordered a breakfast sandwich one morning. The woman started making a coffee drink. I just patiently watched. She paused to wait for a regular to walk in and hand them the drink. She turned to me and asked 'what was it that you wanted?'. Next visit was third in line, after almost 5 min my order had not been taken. Had to just walk out so I wasn't late for work. My wife has had similar experiences, so I know my incidents aren't isolated. If you patient person and can tolerate poor service, give Shawn's a try. read more

I live a few blocks from Shawn's. I enjoy the fact that this little coffee shop is in our neighborhood. When the Farmer's Market is in town it's the perfect place to go after a stroll through the aisles of vegetables, jams and home baked goods. Nestled in downtown Sycamore, it's a cozy spot to have a muffin, coffee or get a great Bagel sandwich. They also have coffee beans for purchase. I like the feel of a local coffee shop but I feel something is lacking with Shawn's. The decor inside is a little dated and often the extra seating room is closed early before closing time, which is also early. Shawn's would to better to update their decor and extend hours. They need to get some fluffy couches in there and hire someone to do an open mic night. read more

I stopped by for a cup of coffee and breakfast. The multigrain bagel looked good, and sounded healthy. In afterthought, I have no idea what makes up a multigrain bagel. Regardless, sounded like the better option than a plain bagel. Seemed like a local spot for Sycamore and DeKalb folks to meet up and shoot the breeze. Cops, and a couple of good ole boys were sipping on their morning joe when I stopped in. Young ladies running the register and preparing the food and drinks were very kind and talkative. It's a quaint little sandwich & coffee place. They offer a whole lot of different sandwiches. I ordered the turkey club. It was good, but nothing to write home about. The lady who brought our sandwiches to our table mixed them up, but we very quickly figured it out. Then later, another lady almost brought someone else's order to our table! Don't be thrown by the 3-star review. This is more like a 3.5-star review. I like Shawn's. I just haven't had that many items there, and feel like this is an under-informed review. I've had muffins, good without being super-sweet. I've had a couple different sandwiches, nice and fresh, nothing too unusual for the most part. Might seem a little pricey compared to Subway, not too far off from Panera though. Have shared some coffee drinks with my wife, nice stuff, but i don't drink coffee regularly so you'll have to judge for yourself. The staff is warm and friendly, the location is convenient and accessible in downtown Sycamore with street and lot parking nearby. This is a nice place to have for a neighborhood, casual, friendly, things worth buying and eating. I would definitely recommend Shawn's, it's more for locals though, not to show off for visitors. read more

The various coffee beverages here are not only the best in the area, but among the best I've had. Even the regular decaf is great, which at other places tends to be bland and made infrequently. Also, the coffee beans they sell for homebrew are awesome, too. The food here is great as well. I am partial to the breakfast sandwhich, which is made with a real egg. The bagels and deli meat are quality, and make for outstanding standwhiches. I tend to go on weekends, and I don't know if Shawn is usually there then. But, he runs a pretty good operation because the kids that work the counter are on top of things. I recommend this place for breakfast, lunch, or just coffee. read more
