The Ellis Medicine complex has proven to be a serious disappointment. The problems are primarily managerial, but there are some disturbing problems with attitude that seem to pervade professional staff. The management problems begin with billing. In part, problems arise because Ellis Medicine doesn't bill promptly. For example, a complex of insurance-company approved tests conducted on in September 2014 was not billed to the insurance comany until December 2014. For various reasons -- some still not clear after several interactions with various Ellis offices -- about 20 percent of the costs that should have been covered were not. Ellis management and support staff appear unable to determine under what circumstances Ellis Hospital and Ellis-affiliated physicians and surgeons are "in network". My wife has insurance through her government workplace; we asked and were told her first-choice physician was "in network" for her insurance. This turned out to be untrue; Ellis is trying to collect several thousand dollars for what was, after all, an annual physical with a routine blood test. Asking the same question of the hospital in another context, I received two different, and mutually exclusive answers. Even in such matters as calling various Ellis offices is made difficult. It is very rare that one will EVER get a person to answer the phone; it is always "leave a name and number and we'll call you back eventually". This is just irksome. Problems of attitude are more subtle, but equally obvious. For example, arranging an appointment for a semi-annual visit, I asked the clerk taking the appointment call (finally...) to have the ubiquitous CBC+blood-chemistry order faxed to me beforehand, so I could have it done and it would be in front of the physician at the time of the examination. The woman hung up on me. I called another branch of the same operation, intending to change doctors, and made the same request. This time, the problem was on-site. I went to the consulting room and sat down. The intake technician (to call such a person whose job is to run a blood-pressure apparatus and a thermometer a "nurse" degrades the profession) proceeded to order me to move from a chair to an examination table, as more convenient for her. The suggestion that I use an available stool (lower, easier for me with my oxygen equipment) was met with a face and a complaint. This sort of attitude reaches into more senior ranking medical staff. For example, I cancelled what should have been a simple surgical procedure for two reasons: On the one hand, the Ellis-affiliated thoracic surgeon wanted carte blanche, including the possibility of dramatically increasing the scope of the surgery on his own authority. He also refused to disclose whether the members of the surgical team were free of HIV, various forms of hepatitis and so on (all quite commonplace in hospital settings -- after all, they are disease-ridden places full of sick people and medical staff are quite commonly infected with chronic and contagious diseases in the course of their work); it would violate their privacy. In short, Ellis Medicine in all its components seems still wedded to an obsolete model of health care. Its staff at all levels seems committed to an agent/patient model of medicine, and that is just plain foolish. I am a senior citizen; I use a range of medical services and this will not decline. My wife is in the same group. I am well insured for these services, and I budget additional funds to go beyond the limits of that coverage. My wife and I are both university teachers by training; we have advanced degrees and we have research experience sufficient to assess what is going on. In short, we are both well able to assume the role now demanded of people seeking medical care, to be effective patrons of the system, not merely patients being treated. I am now seeking medical services elsewhere. read more

This hospital is one to avoid at all costs. I recently had two relatives ages 96 and 91 admitted and the care was horrible. The 96 year old declined sharply while in the Hospital and yet he was forcibly discharged in 2 days. Inspite of having Medicare and a supplement they forced him out the door in 72 hours which made him not eligible for rehab in a nursing home. THe person in charge of decision making, Maureen Brown, is rude, unempathetic and has no concern for the well being of two elderly seniors. I am filing a claim with the NYS Health Department. I was seen here where they took more than several bloodwork a covid and flu test and was told I can call to get my results, when I called I advised them I'm 6 months pregnant and needed to know my results because after being discharged I'm still sick and would like to know what I should do. Well the "charge nurse in the emergency department" didnt even ask my name her main focus was to hang up on me but her exact words was call your ob then dial tone. Very UNPROFESSIONAL to the max I seen them do patients wrong on so many levels but they need to be shut down or get new staff immediately!!! Very long wait. They skipped over us multiple times. Staff was very apologetic, but words only go so far. They were unable to give us any estimate of wait time and when I said that we were being skipped over, that said they were not a Restaurant. Very unprofessional in my opinion. Personable service, terrible business. Knowing we had Tricare, instead of doing their job and communicating with our insurance we were sent to collections with no notification. Terrible business practice and will avoid this hospital or outlying clinics at all costs. Constantly gives the run around when calling "customer service" (on the phone with them for 6 hours) and will tell you that they will handle it with your insurance. They won't. They will wait until they can send it to collections to get their money. Terrible people, terrible practices. Ellis hospital. Get bent. read more

I had an awful experience at the Ellis ER yesterday. I went in with sever abdominal pain and headache. I've had neurosurgery previously as well. They refused to call Neuro to see me in the ER. Send me home in the same pain and said call the clinic for an appointment. A physician from The Neuro Science Center is who referred me for neurosurgery in NYC which I had done. The doctor however left the practice and the hospital dropped the ball and I've been unable to get any follow up with the Neuro clinic since my surgery downstate. They were even unresponsive to the doctors and nurses from Mt. Sinai who were trying to coordinate my care for when I returned upstate. I'm very disappointed in the care or lack there of that I've received. There was a time where I felt the care they provided was exceptional. They've changed!!! I don't recommend! If you're in chronic pain. Go elsewhere. read more

We brought our daughter to Ellis Hospital were they put her in a room for most of the day. A doctor never saw her, no tests were run. So basically our insurance was charged plus a hefty $70 copay to ha g out in a room for an afternoon. read more

I was sent to Ellis by my doctor for tests in Radiology. First, the Radiology Dept. was fine. I had similar tests a couple years ago at another hospital and this test experience was the same. The time in the waiting room was short. I waited about the same time in the Radiology waiting room at another hospital I've been to and much much longer at another. All of the staff in Radiology were pleasant and considerate. I would be happy to be tested there again. However, when I arrived at the hospital to check in with the receptionist and register, they couldn't find any record of my appointment. My appointment had been made about a month before by my doctor and Ellis Hospital had called me at home TWICE to confirm the appointment. I knew the department I was going to, the name of the person who called me to confirm, and the time of my appointment but they couldn't find anything and they even had to search around to find the name and number of the person to call. The Radiology Dept. is the first door on the left from the Reception desk and they didn't know who to call? I only had to wait a few minutes to register and the actual registration for the test took about 5 or 6 minutes, about the same as most hospitals I've been to for tests and much shorter than one other hospital. read more

Unfortunately I've had to spend more time here in the last few months than I would like. There are some positive things - the folks who work in intensive care - the medical staff - are wonderful. However the non-medical staff (receptionist) was a real pain in the ass and considering she is dealing with people who are extremely ill or visiting a critically ill family member -- the attitude is just inappropriate. She should be transferred to another department IMHO. read more

Definitely not the place to go if you have an emergency. The attendants/nurses/doctors would not listen to me, dragged me around the hospital for four hours, then discharged me. Nothing got done, the problem still remained. They told me to make an appointment with a specific doctor on Monday, but come Monday, the doctor was not at Ellis that day (he was in Saratoga) and he wasn't taking patients. Frustrating to say the least. Don 't go to Ellis Hospital ER on Nott Street unless you absolutely have to. read more

brought my daughter here from malta emergcare because they couldn't figure out what's wrong with her we came to Ellis. she is in severe stabing pain on the left side of her lower stomach radiating to her back. the pain is excruciating everytime they give her morphine 1/2 later the pain is back. terrible service she throwing up an moaning in pain in the waiting room so they leave her in waiting room like this. people are making comments about why don't they help her. theres no rooms they said. It had a review in it from a woman in Esperance NY who says she had medical issues and no one helped until she changed " Doctors" and was sent to Ellis hospital. She was happy with the care she got at Ellis and is well now I hope. One problem is that in the article they name Melissa J. Becker Kaplanowski as the woman's "Doctor". ***FIRST OF ALL SHE IS NOT A DOCTOR even though she leads people to believe she is. She may be a "Family practitioner" but shes only a NURSE PRACTITIONER. ***Second: Melbee Family Practices in Middleburg NY as with any medical office has an affiliation with a certain hospital. Their affiliation is Ellis. So when a patent needs hospital care their first referral is Ellis. They HAVE TO SEND PATIENTS TO ELLIS FIRST unless the patient requests a different hospital they then and only then send them to that hospital. ***Third: Melissa J. Becker Kaplanowski almost cost me my life when I wound up in the hospital with Serotonin Syndrome (thats when a ll of your meds go on overload at once and you crash and burn with uncontrollable symptoms).. Thanks to her lack of proper medical care, follow up and knowledge of my case and what medications she was prescribing me. i had been seeing Dr. Weitz before her when he left I was stuck with her. She got sloppy, lazy and didn't seem to be informed from one appointment to the next. She didn't know what medications I was on even though she was prescribing them and I constantly had to bring in Med lists for her, constantly had to call and ask for blood work results, call and ask for Mamogram scrips etc..She didn't order these things unless I specifically asked for the scrips myself, She told me I didn't need to test my blood sugar that they would do an A!-C in the office every 3 months and that was enough, Even though my A1-C remained over 6.5 and higher for months. I finally went to a specialist myself when she didn't take my Type 2 diabetes seriously. When I hurt my knee she prescribed oxycodone for the pain. She sent me to Ellis to a specialist but after that NEVER ONCE ASKED ME HOW MY KNEE WAS DOING after that one appointment for it but she kept giving me the Oxycodone for over a year. I thou ht I was taking it for fibromyalgia pain and Rheumatoid Arthritis pain not for my knee. Until one day she calls my house and states "I can not treat you anymore because you are getting controlled substances from another doctor and did not tell me". !! IM LIKE WHAT?? FIRST- she received information from all of my doctors. SECOND-: I told her at the next appointment after it was prescribed. SHE KNEW!!! She actually told me she didn't like that doctor prescribing that medication without checking with her first. Yet she does not treat me for nor does she have anything to do with my care from that DOCTOR!!. She can stop writing a prescription any time she wants!! She was just covering her ass way to late I must say!!! Then she calls me into the office for an appointment and actually blamed me for the controlled substance prescriptions SHE WAS WRITING for my care. IM NOT A DOCTOR OR A NP. She tried to say that I was irresponsible and that she was suspicious of what I was doing with the medication because it did not appear in a urine test. Well most meds do not stay in your system long. So if you skip a day or two or more or take it when needed it would not show up in a urine test. Also the pharmacy automatically calls the NP or Doctor who prescribed the medication when a refill is needed the patient does not always know if it was the pharmacy who ordered it or the physician or NP. ABSOLUTELY A PHYSICIAN IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE PRESCRIPTIONS THEY WRITE AND THE FOLLOW UP OF THE PATIENTS CONDITION TO DETERMINE IF THE MEDICATION IS NEEDED OR NOT. When I was hospitalized for the Serotonin Syndrome I was sent to Ellis Hospital from the emergency room at Bassett Hospital. It was their Doctors that told me to absolutely under no circumstances go back to the medical care provider I was seeing and to find another health care provider that was an actual DOCTOR!!! ALTHOUGH THERE ARE MANY PRACTICING NP'S OUT THERE THEY ARE NOT DOCTORS AND DO NOT HAVE A DOCTORS DEGREE. THEY DO NOT HAVE THE SAME EDUCATION AS A DOCTOR. Brought an elderly woman in to Ellis ER with vague stomach pains. We were hesitant to go since we didn't know if it was important enough for the Emergency Room, but several calls to her doctor were not returned, pain was increasing, and well, she is not the type of person to overreact. Still, we went there rather hesitantly. After one x ray, the ER team swung into quick action which was so impressive, we will never forget it. From the technicians, to the aides, to the nurses , to the surgeon, to the anesthesiologist , to the operating room staff, everyone was seamlessly tied together preparing for efficient action. Within two hours she was in the operating room having a surgery that saved her life. When quick action counts, Ellis ER cannot be beat. read more

Being a hospital, you never know who will come in with more severe problems and what not. However, the ER wait time is ridiculous almost every time I have gone. There seems to be a 1:100000 doctor to patient ratio in every department and I always expect to be in the ER for extremely long. Despite my many bad experiences, I recently was surprised with a very nice doctor, and short wait time. We had been in around 330 pm and left around 6 pm. I couldn't believe it. All in all, I guess it really depends on what time you get there, and who is working. My experiences have been more bad times than good, though. read more

The care that I received was unacceptable. After spending 4 hours in the recovery room, because staff had messed up on my bed I was finally taken to A3. When I was taken into the room, the transport aide and tech attempted to use a slide board to slide me from the stretcher to the hospital bed. I was not on the board at all and told them and they argued with me, yet when they attempted to slide me the board slid out from under me. I refused to let them try this again and after a full on abdominoplasty transferred myself from stretcher to bed with no assistance, as they just stared at me. After I transferred myself, the Transport Aide said "Oh Shit" and locked the hospital bed, which was unlocked when they were attempting to transfer me. The nurse that evening was nowhere to be found. I was not supposed to be walking on my own, but had to numerous times in order to use the bathroom because no staff member responded to the call button. Luckily, my wife stayed the night and acted as my nurse. She unhooked my from the machines and unplugged my IV to take me to the bathroom. On two separate occasions, I almost passed out. I was on the toilet, ears ringing, blurred vision, sweat dripping off me, grabbing the toilet bars to avoid falling face first onto the floor. We pulled the cord and noone came. My wife ran out into the hallway and to a different nurses station in order to get assistance After 15 minutes my nurse came in, but only after my wife ran frantically down the hall for assistance. The nurses were not even aware of what surgery that I had and what my restrictions were. Upon discharge the nurse gave me wrong instructions, which I already knew from reviewing with the nurse at my pre-admission testing. This whole thing was unacceptable and I will never got to ellis again. I paid for this out of my pocket and was not provided appropriate care. Ellis Billing Office is the worse.. There's no communication and every representative tell a completely different tail about your billing account. Somehow they got my bills mixed up, which cause me to over pay, so now they owed me a credit.. Even tho they owed me a credit, that didn't stop them from sending my new bill to collections, rather than using my credit to cover the bill. I called several times for them to mail me a check for the credit they owed me, they never did. Spoke to several supervisors, who made empty promises to send me my check of 108$.. I finally gave up and left it. Now months later, I got a bill for a recent visit, so I called them to use my credit to cover the bill.. what do you know, they can't find records of my credit.. they advise me that they see that I have a 23$ credit with Overton and Russell (which they sent to Overton and Russell, why are they sending my credit to Overton instead of me?)but they advise me that they can't use that money to cover my new bills either. I did call Overton to find out about this credit, which they have no idea what I'm talking about!! Many times it takes several calls to actually speak with someone, forget leaving a message because you won't be getting a call back. The representatives (I finally spoke to several) has no customer service skills or communication skills. They cut you off, put you on hold without advising you, they're argumentative and defensive.. Absolutely disgraceful Business. I despise Ellis Medicine so much, their process and going around is circles is frustrating! They do have a few doctors here with beautiful souls, who goes above and beyond, however the company itself is disappointing and disgraceful. read more

Our elderly uncle has received care in both the ER, the cardiac care and ICU over the past month. Ellis medical group and hospital has provided outstanding care. The ER visit had him in front of a dr within 20 minutes. The cardiac care and ICU is filled with caring professionals who not only rendered great care to him but also treated our family with exceptional kindness and guidance. It's a shame that a few employees (discharge nurses) can ruin what otherwise would have been a very caring experience. From the admittance staff to the morning ER shift. The orderlies to the amazing dialysis team. They all were above and beyond in kindness, compassion and professionalism. Only wanting what was best for their patient. It was only after a 11 hour hospital visit did the experience turn for the worse. After waiting nearly an hour to be discharged we asked to sign out. That's when the rudeness came. Including a comment stating "well we are not a drive through" to an elderly patient along with other rude comments and attitude. I don't expect it but if the hospital would want the names of the two nurses that need to work on their bed side manners, I would be more than happy to provide them. read more

Been to Ellis for lab work and xrays. Out Patient registration was busy but move along smoothly the staff drawing blood was pleasant and Radiology was extremely busy but didn't wait very long and as before staff very pleasant and caring. As for E.R. I can't say anything bad sure I waited in waiting room for some times but feel the triage was fair considering ambulances were constantly pulling in and others in waiting room seemed worse off than me. I would NEVER recommend Ellis Hospital to anyone. My father has been there on several occasions and received the worst care. He would ring the bell for the nurse and had to wait over 20 minutes for someone to answer. But when I would go to look for someone, I would always find them standing and talking around the nurses station. Even though they saw the light on they would come when they felt like it. Never saw a doctor either. My Dad also needed help with his meals and for the most part by the time they got around to him the food was cold. Really BAD food, tastes horrible. read more

I never thought I would be writing a yelp review on a hospital, but this place is more of a business than a place where people are healed/cared for anyway. I've been going to Ellis since I was born and just recently I've decided that Ellis is now my last resort if I or my family and friends need medical care. The lab is very unorganized. I've had urine samples lost and mislabeled within weeks of providing the samples. I've been sent to the wrong campus for an ultrasound of my kidneys and bladder and had to wait over an hour to be seen for an appointment that required me to have a full bladder (2 1/2 hours until I was relieved of a full bladder!!). Ellis is also known for understaffing their floors. Worst of all, a close friend of mine went to the ER and the nurse did not know how to stick an IV!! She was stuck more than 5 Times with an IV needle. She asked for the IV team, the team that is specialized in IVs to prevent this very issue, and she was told they were "unavailable." In actuality, Ellis hospital abolished the IV team. Patients now should expect multiple, PAINFUL sticks with needles if they have tricky veins. Ellis hospital is no longer concerned for patient care, they clearly only care about how much money they're making. I highly suggest you and your loved ones go ANYWHERE else if you're in need of medical attention. This 'hospital' is not here for you, they're here for money and should only be used as a last resort. read more

I'm a medical professional and have been for 24 years.. had the misfortune of bringing an injured family member here as the next closest hospital 30 minutes away in Albany- will never go there again. I live in northern New Jersey, and my daughter and son-in-law live in Schenectady, New York. Recently, I drove to their home to babysit my two beautiful grandsons so my daughter and son-in-law could attend a wedding. After they had arrived home for the evening, we all went to bed. As soon as I layed my head on the pillow, I became terribly ill and was rushed to Ellis Hospital's ER where I was met by Dr. Castillo. Feeling so sick and being away from home made me extremely nervous; however, the care I received that evening from the ER staff and Dr. Castillo was outstanding. Dr. Castillo has a phenomenal bedside manner which greatly eased my fears. I cannot praise this hospital, staff, and doctor enough for their kindness, thoroughness, and caring. I am back home in New Jersey and have followed up with my PCP regarding my health issues. It's comforting to know that when visiting my family in Schenectady, I have such a wonderful doctor and hospital to reach out to should I ever need emergency care in the future. I would highly recommend Dr. Castillo to my entire family and all of my friends. He is an excellent physician! read more

It is possible that Ellis Medicine ER is one of the worst things to happen in this area. I had my one family member there there, then had to drive my other family member in...when my first family was brought there after having a severe medical emergency the staff took way too long (about four hours) to get to him even though he was driven by ambulance. The tests that were performed had little evidence on their diagnosis. After reviewing the numbers myself and consulting with another doctor, there was no way the diagnosis was correct. That same night, I had to bring in my second family member. No one was at the front ER desk to sign anyone in. The security had said we need to wait about 15 minutes for the person's break to be done. I am sorry...this is an Emergency Room but it is run as if slow and steady wins the race. With medicine, that is not always the case...especially in emergent situations. So I drove my second family member up to a much better and more clean emergicare facility. Furthermore, the CNAs in the ER have poor tact when it comes to dealing with patients and seemingly need a refresher course in how to bathe and turn patients. They could also use bedside manner assistance. The staff, while patients wait in their ER rooms, sits or stands chatting with each other as if the persons in the rooms cannot hear them. News for them, we can. No, they were not chatting about work-related items, nor about patient care plans...but rather about what they were doing when they were off. Really? I can't stress the importance of professionalism in a hospital, and Ellis Hospital has none. St. Claire's was a great hospital, great ER, and treated everyone top notch. Ellis treats everyone as if they could not care less about the patient's prognosis. I get it, hospitals are not hotels. I work in healthcare, I know how awful the hours can be. But that gives you no reason to not be tending to patients when you are not busy, to not be at the front desk in the ER, and to not give the right diagnosis. Lastly, their billing department is horrendous. No one is ever there during call hours...I had tried three days in a row, left messages, calling about five times a day. No one answered. I write on their Facebook wall and someone tells me to call them. Are you serious? Schenectady should boycott Ellis for their ER and billing. However, their neuroscience doctors are phenomenal...or the two that we have had were. Still, the hospital feels gross, unclean, old, and broken. For the money they get, for the poor staff they have, for the unprofessional atmosphere, I give this hospital a one star. Granted, it is our only option around this area. If I had the money, I would make my own hospital. Watch out, Ellis. You can't have a monopoly for too long...a competitor has to come along at some point. At a recent emergency room visit. I received prompt care, except I was missed diagnose .they sent me home with medication for someone that has a severe cold, I was still very sick 2 days later, worse in fact. I saw my primary and she told me I had Bronchitis. Which requires a antibiotic to get well.So this cost me more lost time from work.Also I don't recall them taking my blood pressure and temperature.Thank you so much Ellis. read more

I went to the emergency room with agonizing stomach pain. I was left writhing in pain for 4 hours before anything was done. They did a cat scan and said nothing was wrong with me. They pumped me with morphine and sent me home. 8 hours later the pain was back. I went to Saratoga hospital and the difference in how I was treated was like night and day. Turns out it is gall stones. The doctor and nurses at Saratoga were amazing. Kind, caring, and just wonderful. The doctor at Ellis and the nurses were none of the above. If you have an emergency stay away from Ellis hospital. read more

If I could give 0 stars, I would. Doctors stating my grandmother was hooked up to heart monitors and machines, lies. Nurse unable to take blood multiple times. No iv with fluids for someone who is vomiting, no way to replenish fluids. I am baffled by the incompetency of this ER. Do NOT bring your loved ones to this emergency room. read more

Had to go to Ellis ER at 2 am one morning because of ongoing pain and cramping in my right leg. Cramps were bad and I only got a few minutes respite between each one - they made me cry and whimper. I've never had any pain like that in my life, and I've had three children. The receptionist's attitude was cold and she acted like I was really bothering her. Her look said, "don't care if you drop dead." Checked in with her and waited an hour just to get triaged by a nurse who took my bp and said she'd try to get me in. The waiting room was absolutely filthy, I almost sat in cough syrup. About another hour later they called me in, and I noticed the same cough syrup that was on a chair in the waiting room was also spilled on the floor at the triage station, no one even bothered to wipe it up. In the meantime another patient came out who had been waiting with me, he said, "Don't bother. You have to wait another three hours in there." I went in anyway. A tech came and took another bp. No nurse. No gown to change into. No one came even when another bout with the pain made me cry. It was a room that was beyond filthy - large chunks of wallboard had been peeled off of two walls. Lots of clutter. The bathroom I went to was so dirty I can't even describe it. We waited two hours - when I finally decided to leave on the way out, I saw with my own eyes, nurses sitting around talking and doing paperwork. Really? When I told them I wanted to leave, one said "I'm sorry we are so backed up." But really, I didn't see anyone going into any rooms so if they are backed up in my opinion it was them not doing their jobs. I left. About an hour after I got home, I had a spasm that made my foot and lower leg cold and numb. I was scared of a blood clot or something life-threatening, so my husband drove me to St. Peter's which is in Albany but only about 10 minutes away from us.
