We were looking forward to the pool and hot tub, especially based on the pictures we were provided, but both were really gross. The pool was filled with dirt our entire stay. This building looks like it was a luxury building at one point, but has slowly started to not be maintained. The HVAC system inside the unit made us pretty sick, so I'm unsure the last time it was cleaned and guessing it is moldy. The views from our unit were amazing, so that was a plus. It was also in walking distance to the conference center and a few restaurants. For $400+ a night, I wouldn't stay again.

The boxes have my name and unit number on them, yet they still "disposed" of them (in quotations because some of my items have AirTags on them and I see them in West Town). Instead of looking out for their tenants and putting them first, they care more about $50/month charge on a storage unit (compared to my $5k rent). What makes this whole situation worst is they don't even know their own storage unit numbers and ask you to do their work when you are the paying customer. I will not be renewing my lease here. Great apartment, highly recommend…read more It's about a 30min drive to major Chicago neighborhoods and 20min to North Chicago, making a good spot for commuting. Target is about 5-8min away. Other big grocery stores are ~30 min away. Management was always very responsive to concerns -- we often got concerns addressed the same day. The apartment itself was very clean and spacious. Everyone gets 2 parking spots and there's also separate visitor parking (for free). The package receiving room is big and well organized - often boxes would be on the floor because of overflow but it's all in a locked building. Decent gym as well. One concern is that the water quality is really bad. If we came back after the weekend the water would be yellow, and you could feel the poor quality in your hair. Maintenance flushed out the shower a few times but it didn't solve the issue. We also wish there was an in-unit washer/dryer but there are plenty of W/D throughout the floor ($5 per W/D cycle). The walls are quite thin as well throughout the building. It often felt like people outside were in your room. Also between our two rooms, you could hear what people were saying in the other room clearly (feel like there was some insulation issue between the window/wall). Overall though it was a decent, affordable apartment with good amenities and good service.

To start, the apartment was not cleaned for my roommates and I before moving in; there were brown stains/spills on the mattresses, in the fridge, and in several kitchen cabinets. There was also black mildew in the bathroom shower, along with many other unhygienic issues that made it clear that a cleaning clew had not visited the apartment. Of the four of us living there, three (including me) were new tenants, our fourth roommate had been living there for two years in bedroom 'A2'. For some odd reason, management thought she had moved out during 2020, and leased her bedroom to someone else from May 2022 to July 2022. None of us were aware of this until the new girl all but showed up at our door, forcing us to scramble to make space for her. Additionally, the 'security' staff is extremely rude and unwelcoming. I had friends over and gave them my keys so that they could go buy something from the 7/11 next door. The 'security' guard took the keys from their hand and would not allow them re-entry to the building. When I went to the lobby to clear up the situation, she refused to give me MY KEYS back until my friend bought her black and mild cigars, trying to blackmail us by saying she would report us to management (I should be allowed to do what I want with my own keys, mind you, I was paying rent to live there). On one occasion, a 'security' guard went as far as to curse at my father because he asked to be exempt from the 3 person guest policy and allowed entry, considering one of the guests was my SEVEN year old brother. Another one of my friends was forced to wait outside in the middle of winter until I came down to sign her in. Given the weather conditions, she should have been allowed to wait in the lobby. I would also often come off the elevator to hear two of the 'security' guards loudly talking bad about me, but I never reported them for their extremely hostile behavior because I was afraid they might retaliate and become physically aggressive (there were times I honestly believed they would put their hands on me). I thought maybe they just disliked me, but after reading these reviews, it's clear others have received the same treatment as well. Despite the borderline tyrannical guest policy in place, someone managed to break into a resident's apartment my first month living there, constituting a police intervention. In addition, the management team never once replied to my emails during the entire year I lived there. At one point, I was going to be out of town for a week, so I personally asked the staff to not unlock my bedroom door for my roommates. I was assured that a photo ID was needed to unlock any doors for identity confirmation. Less than 3 hours after I left, a staff member unlocked my bedroom door at my roommates request. I never received a response to my email questioning why that was done. Going back to the disgusting state the apartment was given to us in, while moving out (yes, my 4 roommates and I all moved out at the same time because this place was so awful) we spent the entire weekend trying to make the apartment presentable, and we did reasonably accomplish that. Yet, two months after moving out, we received an email saying that we owe $150/each for the condition we left the apartment in, after already being sent a final bill one month after we moved out! These people are nothing more than scam artists and leaches, presenting under the false pretense of a high end, student friendly apartment company. Unless there have been drastic changes within management -- DO NOT live here.

We were model tenants, paid rent on time for every single month we lived there, not a bunch of noise and only called upon them to fix problems that we couldn't fix ourselves. You would think that they would want to keep tenants like us around but it seemed as though they wanted us to move out every single time that our lease was up (we eventually bought a house in the suburbs for the same amount of money they wanted for rent but three times the size). If you see the attached pictures, there were always problems in the building and the management company dragged its feet to rectify them. Also, when we moved in originally we had front door staff almost 24/7 but after a couple years the desk was empty except for a couple hours during the weekend where a great guy named Marcus manned it. Workout room and equipment is antiquated, trash shoot and recycling room were clogged/dirty way too often, elevators would be out of service for extended periods of time (it's a pretty old building), etc. Now I see that they are trying to rent the place we occupied for over $2200?! In my opinion, there are better values in the city if you're going to pay that much for rent There are more problems but you get the gist, I would not recommend Somerset Place
