Front desk is RUDE! If I could give zero stars I would. Do not make an appointment here. If you do not jump through the exact hoops, the very NASTY and RUDE lady at the desk wants you to jump through she will cancel your appointment. I showed up early for an appointment that I made and has an email confirmation of. They did not have me on the schedule because she chose to cancel it without telling me. She had my email address and could reach me but did not attempt to do through any method other than phone, which did not get through to me. I have been going to Dr. Tekle for over 2 years and have recommended her numerous times. The office is located in the medical office on musgrove rd across from the larger Verizon building. It's just off ICC. The office itself is not one of those modern, sparkling places that jack up their prices just because of the office environment. Her service is excellent, as well as her attentive staff. I originally went to Dr. Tekle for a 2nd opinion on a crown I needed. I paid 65% less I was quoted in a Rockville dentist. When she had to numb my gums she did so with such ease and as little discomfort as possible. All in all that first experience kept me coming back over and over again. I always get called for an appointment reminder and receive a text too. For as dreadful as the dentist can be, going to Dr. Tekle makes it that much more desirable. read more

Dr. Abate is a great dentist and is the only reason why I have remained coming here. The customer service from the front end staff is HORRIBLE. Her attitude is unpleasant and distasteful, you're able to hear how she doesn't want to be there through the phone. My multiple interactions with her have been horrible and she constantly has an attitude or an "I don't care" tone. it's like family!!! I have always kept up with my regular dental appointments, until two years ago when I had to undergo multiple surgeries due to cancer. I had to put my teeth on hold until I was at a point to get my dental care started again. I searched for a new dentist because I didn't like my previous one. my insurance gave me five choices and I looked through them, did a little searching and decided with Dr. Tekle (Tech-lee). OMG! Highly unprofessional! My first visit to Dr. Tekle's office was in February, seeking braces/Invisalign consultation. To date, I have spent $869 and 6 months, and still WITHOUT clear treatment plan. Dr. Tekle's services are highly unprofessional and blatantly ignorant of customers' satisfaction. Each visit, you leave feeling more confused than ever before! Today, after calling ahead of time and specifically requesting to have Dr. Tekle explain her treatment plans to me, I was simply told to reschedule for a later date upon arrival. This has happened TWICE. She clearly does not value the time and business her patients bring, especially new patients. It's evident from the other comments and my own experience that she prioritize money over her due diligence...MORE IMPORTANTLY, it was very clear to me that she could care less on what you think about her services! Dr. Tekle is the dentist who took over Dr. Elliot Shapiro's practice 15 years or so ago. He'd been in Silver Spring for decades, first on Alaska Avenue, NW, then to Silver Spring offices. Dr. Tekle learned office practice from the best. Dr. Tekle is knowledgeable and interested. She teaches the dental patient, explaining carefully both procedures and outcomes. Each and everyone been who has ever assisted in the office is knowledgeable, and interested in top-notch patient care, It is how they have been trained. Cleanliness is of utmost importance in this practice, it's greatly appreciated. Great care is taken to be sure that everything is sterile, tools that come in contact with the patient well-covered. I use the gas anesthesia--- even for cleaning. It's totally worth extra cost to me to be utterly relaxed, yet awake. While it has never been widely popular, it seems increasingly unavailable in dentists' offices, I've called around for a friend who has dental insurance---not many dentists use it. I simply don't understand--I guess they are using pills for sedation. Why involve your liver and stomach to get yourself relaxed for a dental session? ..dunno.... I have been using the gas for forty-three years, it is wonderful. Dr. Tekle employs state of the art equipment---there is a camera at the end of a probe, you can see the inside of your mouth on a tv screen. As with her predecessor, Dr. Tekle is willing to make longer appointments. The patient can have more work done, which eliminates frequent appointments. Combined with her exam that involves checking neck and glands, a patient feels that a full dental health evaluation is made with each visit, including when one only has a hygienist appointment. Dr. Tekle has a wonderful chairside manner. She is a compassionate dentist and a willing teacher. She agrees with me--as maddening as it is----a dentist will send you to the doctor, but HAVE YOU EVER HEARD of a doctor who will send someone to a dentist??? It is now known that lack of dental care leads to infection and inflammation that can effect the heart. Does any doctor make Routine the questions as to oral health when they see a patient??? ******Here's an Update for even more superb work by Dr. Tekle....in 2011 she did extensive cosmetic dentistry for me. The sessions are long and involved, I keep apologizing for taking up so much of her time. The impressions and molds, the file-ing and fitting, the adjustments, it is all laborious and involved in the extreme. No minus' at all. Not even the ---gulp---cost. It is costly, but I knew that I would need it eventually. It is costly, but so is home renovation. It is costly, but the results are beautiful. It is costly, but I was able to use my Medical Savings Account because I paid one-half late in the year. Dr. Tekle kindly worked with that schedule so that some of the work would flow to January and I could pick up the second -half of the well-worth-it expense for 2012. Now would you tell me--- why didn't I get it done before this????? Of course, it was the cash and my inability to set aside money....but I was FIVE years before I started my medical savings plan---what part of dumb, is that??? The OTHER plus of medical savings accounts is that it allows for big expenditures, you don't need to rob the cookie jar or wait to develop some financial management skills. Yes, this was way--- way- worth- it.. I wish I had treated myself earlier to something that I knew, and Dr. Tekle knew, I would someday need....Crowns are covered by medical savings accounts, cosmetic dentistry is not. For the reviewer here who had a dental insurance problem, I can feel your pain, but we have to know, things can change on a monthly basis. I wouldn't trust only the Insurer, or only its website, and certainly not trust a providers' office staff to give the most current information. It's confusing when you try to compare the plans, how could office staff keep up. When you have a written confirmation from the Insurer itself, you'd have an action if the Insurer gave you wrong information. With the Affordable Care Act, we can put an end to chaos and start putting professional healthcare on the front burner----billing chaos can end. *******I would recommend this practice to anyone. I called Dr. Tekle's office to schedule appointments for my parents (who are older and require assistance with this) and was told by the staff that their UHC Community plan was accepted. It's really hard to find good doctors that take the MD Medicaid dental insurance and it was a bonus that Dr. Tekle has a similar language/cultural background as my parents (who sometimes have trouble communicating in English). When they returned from the appointment, they were extremely upset and emotional by the experience they had. From what I was told, Dr. Tekle made the experience very uncomfortable for them both and her condescension towards my parents was very palpable (not sure if it's because my parents have state medicaid dental insurance or what...inexcusable regardless). They ended up leaving without any work being done, not only because she made it clear their dental coverage would be insufficient for all their dental work (at the least, she could've done the requisite covered dental cleanings), but that she came across very insulting. My parents are proud people and would've paid for reasonably priced care even above the insurance, had they had a good experience. Ultimately, they only needed a cleaning and I guess that and good customer service were too much to ask...unless you have what she considers is good dental insurance wherein she can hike up your costs unnecessarily. Please make sure you get an estimate from her before starting dental work and check it with another provider. The quote she provided my parents for dental work was much more expensive than other dental providers. PS. Check some of the Google reviews, it seems she has a history of prioritizing money above her due diligence to providing quality care & customer service. I have been seeing Dr. Elsabet Tekle as my dentist for several years now and I just love her and her staff. You walk in the office and they make you feel like family. When Dr. Tekle or one of her staff is working on my teeth, I just want to fall asleep. They are so gentle with you and they explain everything that they are doing to you. Also, the fees are very reasonable. If you are looking for a dentist who will treat you right and who really cares about you, then this is the dentist to go to. The first time I went to Dr. Tekle's office I had a decent experience, so I scheduled a second appointment a few weeks later to have an old filling redone. I asked Dr. Tekle how long she thought the second appointment would take, so I could schedule it at an appropriate time When I arrived for my second appointment, the receptionist told me to have a seat, and that someone would be with me shortly. After waiting for 45 minutes, I told the receptionist that I needed to reschedule. Dr. Tekle immediately came out, and tried to convince me to stay. When I told her that I no longer had enough time, she said she could do the procedure in less than half of her originally quoted time. I said the thought of her rushing the procedure made me uncomfortable, but she wouldn't relent. It took 10 minutes of this back and forth before I was finally allowed to reschedule. Two days before my rescheduled appointment, I received a text confirming the time of the appointment. Sometime in between this text and when I arrived for my appointment, her office changed my appointment time without telling me. When I showed up 10 minutes early, I was chastised for being half an hour late. Even after I showed the receptionist my confirmation text, she still insisted that I was wrong and that I was late. Against my better judgement, I went ahead and went back for the appointment. After I was in the chair, I was told that before Dr. Tekle would work on my filling, one of her assistants was going to give me a brushing demonstration. A woman came in, began berating me for not brushing "properly," and began brushing, not my teeth, but my gums. She brushed them so hard that they bled, and I was left with visible cuts on my gums that lasted for over a week. For the next week, I couldn't brush my teeth (even incredibly gently), without reopening the cuts, bleeding, and crying. Needless to say, I didn't stick around after this to let Dr. Tekle work on my filling. I simply paid what I owed and left. Now her office continues to harrass me about making another appointment, even though I've asked countless times to be removed from their list. I've explained that I have a different dentist now, and won't be coming back, but they won't stop calling and emailing me. read more

This is the first poor review I write but it needed to be done after my husband and I had an awful experience with this doctor. We were new to the area and based on her reviews here I scheduled us both for the new patient appt/cleaning. I went first and I would like to praise Mayumi (hygienist) for her excellent work and bedside manner. I was surprised to receive the cleaning before even meeting the doctor. After a very thorough cleaning, I saw Dr. Tekle for about 5 mins total since there wasn't much going on in my mouth. I went with my husband and same thing happened the cleaning and Mayumi went to schedule him for 6 months later while Dr. Tekle came in, took a look at his xrays and decided that what he had needed and received was not a regular cleaning but a "debridement" and that he would need to return to continue what had been started. She disappeared into her office and even though it was evident we had many question and concerns she just let the front desk lady deal with us. The front desk lady told us the debridement was anywhere from ~$97-170 and our insurance would probably not cover the debridement and we would be billed. Concerns: 1) Shouldn't we be aware of a procedure along with its cost before it starts and agree to having it done? We had made the appt for a new patient exam and cleaning alone 2) Shouldn't the doctor see the patient first to make some kind of treatment plan? 3) Mayumi had done the exact same thing she did on me as she did on my husband involving her: ultrasonic, some hand scalers, polish and floss! I tried to explain this to the front desk that we would not like to proceed with the debridement but would like to be charged for what we came for/received. She was rude and insisted that he had had further work done. When we got home we emailed Dr. Tekle to voice our concerns. She responded with something not even addressing what we had written and ended by saying Prisca (front desk) would be happy to refer us to a periodontist. We responded and we never received another email from her. When we started receiving bills from her office even though we had stated not wanting to proceed with the debridement, we decided to just go through with it since we were being billed and then end our account with them never to come back. I called Prisca and explained that to her and she set the next appt for about a month later. After confirming several times via text & email we arrive at the appt. When we get there Prisca told us the appt had been CANCELLED via email this morning. We did not receive any email from the office and I thought it was so unprofessional! When we had our first visit we signed paperwork that said if we cancel our appt within I think 24 hrs we have to pay something like $50 yet here they are not even giving us a courtesy call but cancelling via an email (that we never received) the same day! My husband had taken time off from work for this, time = money. When I asked the reason for the cancellation she said based off the emails we had exchanged she wanted to refer us to another doctor = a doctor's way of getting rid of a patient! HOW RUDE! We insisted on speaking to the doctor while there but the doctor had no interest and apparently "had patients" during our appt time. VERY DISAPPOINTED!!! p.s. during the 15 mins total we had with the doctor during our appts she seemed very cold, impersonal with no sense of humor. read more

This was my first visit to this office. Front desk staff were very friendly and welcoming. The waiting area is beautifully decorated and clean. I didn't have to wait no more then 5 minutes before I was called to the back. Dental tech and dentist were very nice, very detailed throughout the process. Dr. Tekle has consistently amazed me with her gifts as a "painless" dentist..she's sooo good with the needles, and she always shows more concern with my level of pain than with hurrying me through. Let me start by saying that Elsabet Tekle is a FANTASTIC dentist. If I could recommend anyone, it would be her. However, my last visit left me feeling very bitter. I scheduled an appointment and asked if they took DentaQuest. The receptionist said they did, so I gave her my card (for Aetna as well as DentaQuest) since my information was different from the last time I had visited. She DID NOT mention whether or not I was "in network", and even came up during my appointment to say that she had sent in the new paperwork. Now, I understand that times are tight...but if you knew anything about a network then something should have been mentioned...or at least checked. I had trusted her to give me the right information...and now I have a $200 bill. As it turns out, I'm not "in-network". Sadly enough, I went on the website and looked her up...and she's not covered under DentaQuest. Why wasn't this mentioned when I called the office to make an appointment? Or when I physically came in for it? As a receptionist, you should be more careful with handling patients. If they're handing you an insurance card...chances are they can't afford to pay out of pocket. Now, I should have gone online to check beforehand...but I made the mistake of calling the office to ask. This may be my fault, but perhaps the receptionist could have double-checked BEFORE my appointment started so we could avoid this situation. I trusted her to give me accurate information...but obviously she can't be trusted. It's sad that such an AMAZING dentist (let me reiterate, FANTASTIC dentist) has such a horrible receptionist. I've heard of medical professionals who swindle money like it's their job, but never in a million years did I think it would happen there. She wasn't even that friendly when she called...and I specifically asked to have Tekle call me back. My advice? Find out all the information for yourself, and don't ask the receptionist anything. I've been going to this dental practice for close to 30 years. First with Dr Elliott Shapiro who took a long gone time to find the right dentist to transition his practice to. Dr Teckle is passionate about providing her patients with an informed diagnosis and thoughtful recommendation based on their needs. Comfort is always her first concern and she offers nitrous oxide as a option. I always feel very comfortable recommending her to my friends. I'm a real dentalphobe who started using her after she got good reviews on my list serv. I've been three times and I'm very pleased thus far. She is constructive, uncritical, positive, patient, thorough and very attentive to helping me stay relaxed throughout the appointment. She seems very knowledgeable and is current in her equipment. I used gas twice because I thought I couldn't get through without it, but by the third session I decided to go without and found she was so gentle during the novacaine shot (which I dreaded most) that it was a success, thus sparing me the $50 extra charge for the anesthesia. read more
