Yesterday was the 2nd time in the past couple of months that I have bought cakes at Elvira's for wedding celebrations of coworkers at my office. On both occasions I have received rave reviews from the staff of 15 and have even been told "this is the best cake I've ever had". Today's double layer Mocha Tres Leche was sublime with it's dense spongy interior, creamy frosting and fruit decoration. For $40 we fed 15 and the bride had plenty to take home to share with family and friends. A bargain in my book, and certainly not something that I could create at home. While I was there , I also had lunch. The barbacoa quesadilla was also a bargain for $6. A hot off the grill cheesy and meaty mess - and I mean mess in a good way! Lots of marinated beef chunks cooked in seasonings that took the quesadilla to a whole other dimension. With Thanksgiving week on us, I wanna give thanks to Elvira's for always making me look good at work with your amazing bakery and giving us those amazing and traditional Mexican taqueria style dishes from your kitchen. read more

So this was the first time that I've ever tried Tres leches as a cake. The flavor of the cake was amazing. My brother got me the mocha Tres leches cake as a birthday gift. And again the flavor was great but the cake itself was a weird texture that I did not enjoy. In my mind I thought that the trace leches liquid would go into a moist dense cake and it just went into a dry cake so it was leaking all over the bottom. Ordered a large Tres Leches cake and was pleased with it overall. Flavor was good. It had options for a filling with a few flavors to choose from. I prefer no filling but it didn't provide an option on their website when ordering to opt out. I chose a fruit filling and it wasn't overpowering. Cake was moist from the milks and the frosting was tasty. Ordering process was painless other than not being able to pass on a filling. Great spot to indulge in tres leches among other goodies. It's like a bakery combine with a restaurant inside. Who knew?! I love coming here to tried out something new. I had their tres leche cake and their pastries. I like how their sweets are not to sweet like the average American Bakeries. I decided to try their food last night and had their gorditas, elotes, and their tamales. It's all so delicious and their season of their food was spicy yet not too overpowering. They make their food right there so you know it's very authentic. It's very hard to understand the cook/clerk if you don't speak or know spanish well. So brush up on your Spanish skills a little bit and they will be very much helpful to let get what you want. Bought a cake for my son's b-day. I've heard so much about this place I though I'd give it a try. I purchased a Vanilla/Chocolate 3 leches cake .. and sadly have to say .. not buying cakes from them again. I am assuming the food and custom cakes are as delicious as their pan dulce due to the high amount of customers in the store. We had some roofers work on our house.. I asked them what their favorite beer was, and I would have it for them the next day. So, I got it for them and then they offered me some of their tamales. It was like handing me a hidden secret. I asked them where they got them, and they said a store nearby. I didn't push them for the name. I have been looking for excellent tamales for awhile. I had read an article while living in St Louis about the Tamale Kitchen here in KC.. and I finally had Tamale Kitchen's tamales at the Day of the Dead celebration at the Nelson Atkins museum. Their quality was excellent but they lacked some of the flavors I prefer. NOW.. The tamales our roofers handed us.. Were amazing! Family members ate these, and they normally do not like tamales. I texted the contractor and asked him to find out the name of the place where the Tamales came from. Well, It was Elvira's. My hearts on fire! The store had a lot going on. A lot. So be ready to get out of people's way or get right to it. Walk up and just place your order and pay. I saw people walking out with huge bags filled with these tamales. I got 3 types of tamales. Red, Green and a Cheese/Jalapeno. I wasn't sure if there were more, but I would have tried more if they had them. Typically a verde (green) tamale is my favorite but the clear winner was the red tamale. It was filled with shredded beef and was just fantastic. So much flavor. It's not a bland corn cake like you get at some places, this thing was a full flavored tamale. The others were quite good as well, but the red just had a bit more kick. We got one other burrito which had red potatoes in it? It was good too, but not tamale level in my opinion. There are all kinds of baked goods in there too. They all looked great and this place was busy, so that should tell you something. I was just zeroed in on the tamales for this trip. If you're a person who feels uncomfortable in odd places, first off.. I'm sorry, but get over yourself a bit and go in there and get these wonderful tamales. You may make some new friends and you'll definitely have some amazing tamales! read more

I always, always, always use Elvira's for my baking necessities! It's a bakery and restaurant combined so it's super convenient. Do you want cake or tamales? No worries, make one stop here! They have delicious champurrado and their green tamales are to die for! Personally, I do not like tres leches cake, however most people do and Elviras' are great! I always get vanilla bread with either pineapple or strawberry filling for my cakes because I'm just a strawberry and pineapple type of girl :) Their mocha cake is also very good! They also sell sweet bread, piñatas, decor for baby showers, quinceañeras and a variety of other miscellaneous items. I'm telling you, you'll find most of what you're looking for here. I like Elvira's. Their specialty is various desserts, but they also offer savory items. The tamales are what appears to be the hot item here. The selection of pastries is amazing. As we were checking out all of the different things available, Victor came over to restock. I asked him what his favorite was and he selected the creme filled cone thing. I knew from that moment I needed to listen to Victor because that is my favorite too. We asked about another pastry and after describing it, Victor allowed us to taste one. How awesome is that? And it was pretty awesome, kind of a bread pudding type pastry that is pretty amazing. After selecting our pastries, Victor recommended some tamales. We weren't really planning on more than pastries here after many tacos along Independence, but I couldn't turn down Victor. I am so glad I did get a tamale, and a little disappointed I didn't bring home more. The pork tamale is delicious! Perfectly seasoned, tender pork, surrounded by some of the best masa. Before leaving Victor told me Elvira's is my new home. I think he may be right. I will be back to give the rest of the menu a try! read more

We were super excited to try this place given my predeliction for tres leches since my New Haven days. So confident was I in the reviews, that I had my dad pick up a full size chocolate tres leches cake. The only options were ones with a fruit filling as well. He picked strawberry. I'm not sure why they don't serve up fruit free options. I like my tres leches straight up. The cake was overly grainy and the leches was a little lacking. Flavor was sweet more than anything else. I'll give them another shot with a plain tres leches slice sometime and revise my review. Maybe that was my mistake, going with the chocolate. There is someplace around here that serves up an amazing chocolate tres leches. Someone brought it over once. I just don't know where it came from. read more

I had no idea that cakes and pastries are such a big deal in hispanic culture. Elvira's has a bigger variety of sweet stuff than any place I can think of; the entire front wall is pastries from floor to ceiling! They're all beautiful, and delicious! Then along the back wall is another case of decorated cakes, and a counter serving hot food. I narrowed it down to a doughnut with chocolate frosting and what looked like Oreo crumbs and a square of dense, sweet cake that I can best describe as fruitcake without all the nasty candied fruit. A sweet older gentleman named Victor gave us a tour of the pastry case and a taste of that cake. It was so good that even Yelper Daughter, who hates fruitcake, loved it and ate more than her share. The texture of the raised doughnut was different-more spongy than I'm used to, and not as sweet. But the more I ate, the more I liked it. We were almost ready to pay for our treats and leave, when Victor decided we needed to know about the tamales, too. So I walked out with one of each, pork, chicken, cheese & chile, and a sweet one I haven't tried yet. They were all great, even without any chili or sauce over them; one word of warning, they don't remove the seeds from the chile pepper, so it's HOT! I didn't see any prices on the pastries, but I walked out of the place spending less than $10. I liked everything about Elvira's; Victor alone is worth another visit, not to mention so many good things to eat. read more

Let me start off by saying their cakes and pastries are amazing. I did run into a bit of an issue with them recently when I ordered a cake. I originally wanted a two-tiered tres leches cake and the man at the counter insisted that a tres leches cake can only be only one tier because if they put one on top of the other, it will make the one underneath it soggy, etc etc. He even mentioned how people always try to get him to do it but he always refuses to do it. That seemed reasonable so I went ahead and ordered a one tier tres leches cake with the design I wanted. Fast forward a week later when I go pick up my cake, lo and behold they come out with a two tiered tres leches cake! I was shocked because that's what I originally wanted but a two tier wasn't in my budget anymore. I let them know that I can only pay for one cake and I had already been told they couldn't do two tiers. The workers had a five minute conversation behind the counter with some laughing involved and then they bring out my corrected cake. I had to wait an extra 20 minutes for it and I wasn't too happy that the purple was so dark and the flowers didn't really match. Not super happy with this experience but I just hope it doesn't happen again. I drove all the way from Overland Park to kcmo just because I love the taste of their cakes. read more

Love this sweet place! Best pan dulce,I compare everything to my grandmothers and although to me nothing will ever be as good, Elvira's is solid. It's tasty, lots of varieties and it stays soft!
