The good: drip and Americanos are good. They have a decent selection of whole beans for purchase and they give you a free drip coffee when you buy a bag. The beans are good. Staff seems passionate about the different beans they offer and can help you choose. The not-so-good: the breakfast sandwich is probably amongst one of the worst I've tried: texture-wise it's soggy (maybe due to heating methods?) and flavour wise quite boring and bland. Pastries are average. Their nitro cold brew is all head and lacks flavour. I have never had such a bland nitro cold brew. The way staff responded about my complaint, emphasizing that it's nitro, made it seem like this is the only nitro cold brew they've ever known and don't realize there's so much better (more flavourful, with less head) nitro cold brew out in the world. It was probably the most bland nitro cold brew I've had. I'd only ever come back here for the beans, which is actually a pretty good buying experience with the staff offering suggestions and a free drip with purchase. Elysian is tucked away around the corner in the same building as the 5th Avenue Theatre. Good thing Vincent N. told me to give them a try, or I would never have known they exist. And I drive down Burrard all the the time. Parking is available on Burrard, and around the block after 1800. It's interesting that previous reviews complain about the attitude of the baristas. This must be in the past because they were some of the friendliest I have met in a coffee shop in a while. They greeted me the instant I walked in the door, and everyone was smiling. The inside was somewhat trendy, with lots of dark wood. Some trendy upbeat music was playing in the background. Maybe this is the wrong way to describe it, but I would call it a more upscale version of Starbucks, without the coffee chain feel. Even though I only wanted a regular coffee, they made it fresh. Took them 5-10 minutes to grind the coffee and make one individual cup's worth. Nice personal touch. Of course, one can argue that it should be expected, as my cup of Colombia La Loma was $3. Elysian would be a good place to read while enjoying a cup of joe. read more

The interior design of this coffee shop is cozy and contemporary. Their stools and bar tables are made by wood. The ambiance is causal and comfortable. I ordered a mocha. There was only one size. It tasted excellent with a flower design in the beverage. Pricing at this coffee shop is higher overall, but it is alright and worth it as long as the quality is good! One of the two baristas here was quite new who worked here for two months only. Both baristas had great customer service skills. They greeted the customers and chatted with them a little bit. There were outdoor chairs and tables, but due to a cloudy weather, customers just sat inside the coffee shop. I would like to try their latte next time. read more

* My favourite espresso * Yes, I have searched long and hard for the best and most consistent espresso in Vancouver, and I keep returning to old reliable Elysian. I have yet to have a bad shot of espresso here. Some reported baristas with an attitude here, but I have never noticed that at all. They are always friendly, professional, and pull an excellent shot. I absolutely love Elysian but this location just doesn't give the same positive vibe as the one on Broadway. It's tucked away on 5th and Burrard and I only come here when I'm getting my car serviced at the dealership nearby. Most of the clientele are from local business. I ordered my usual Americano on my last visit and told the barista I'll drink it here. He gave it to me in a paper cup thinking I might need it to go. No, no, no Mr. Barista, I need it in a real cup, ceramic all the way! I like to savor my Americano in the purest possible way. And I didn't get a cup of that sparkling water that Elysian is known for; get it together Mr. barista! This guy must be having a bad day but I don't want to knock anybody based on one experience. It was a fine time in Vancouver, discovering the wonderful places to indulge in one of the hidden arts of the bean. I was in java mecca. The bee to the honey. The elixir being the pour, of the perfect cup. My eagerness was dashed faster than Usain Bolt at the Olympics at the Elysian Room. Why? The coffee didn't match the haughtiness, that's why. Mega attitude as my friend and I were snubbed from the moment we walked in. No, we weren't wearing clown suits, or tourist clothes or anything else that would set us apart from the regulars. But we could have been lepers for the reception. It started when I asked a question about the baked goods. Which looked fabulous and well made. And only got worse the longer we stayed. How did we know we weren't wanted? It wasn't the cute bearded dad with the fat chubby cheeked baby. Noooo, he loved it when I played with his new tyke. Proud papa was friendly and neighborly. The music was the clue. It got louder, and weird. Kinda like Elvis meets electronic. And before you think i am paranoid. The biggest clue was when the barista loudly noted that the choice of music and volume was chosen to drive guests away. Well it worked. And by the way, the coffee was NOT up to par with the competition. Shouldn't have to drive away business. The attitude and poor pours will do that job for you. read more

Up until this morning I had never discovered the delights of Elysian Coffee. I'm an early bird, and usually demand my Saturday morning coffee at an unreasonably early hour. Elysian Coffee in Kits opens at 10am on Saturdays, and while this may be a painfully long wait for your first cup of the day, it's well worth it. We arrived at 11 and the place was packed. We managed to find a table, but there was a lineup of people waiting for a spot and another line hurriedly nabbing takeout. Who knew this was such a neighborhood hot spot! Their selection of baked goods was great; something for every diet and tastebud. Oat free, wheat free, gluten free, butter laden, low calorie, high calorie - you name it they have it. I especially loved their tinier treats. There were lots of options for those who wanted something rich and decadent, albeit in smaller portions. While my americano may not have had the same wow-factor as their art adorned lattes, it most certainly hit the spot! It was thick, rich, and complex. The high ceilings, large windows, and a soothing cozy atmosphere is what I like about this place. Their menu is simple and short: coffee, Americano, espresso, macchiato, chai, loose leaf teas. There's only one size for their drinks. They also have fresh baked goods, as well as sandwiches. (The turkey & brie sandwich looked so good.) We got macchiatos, and took a seat at one of their small tables indoors. The barista actually brought us both glasses of water, right to our table. (That's a first!) The macchiato came in this nice ceramic cups, complete with a nice pattern on the foam. Mmmm, this was delicious! Smooth, aromatic...I succumbed to getting a Scottish shortbread. I just couldn't resist. Soft, sweet, buttery....with a sprinkle of salt on the top. Sip the macchiato, then a bite of the shortbread. Heaven. read more

They offer, skim, soy and almond milk. I chose almond milk and it actually tasted really good. The latte doesn't need sugar and is drinkable right away. Stopped into The Elysian Room after exploring Granville Island. I enjoyed several aspects about The Elysian Room: 1. Wide variety of pastries and desserts - e.g., scones, cookies, muffins, shortbread. However, their cheddar scone (?) had a bit too much dill for my taste. Good, moist texture though. 2. Still and sparkling water on tap! For free. I'm addicted to seltzer so it's a huge plus. 3. Thoughtfully crafted sandwiches - had a menu of five or six sandwiches. I actually ordered the veggie sandwich to eat there and the turkey and cheddar on a croissant to go. I appreciated the uniqueness of the veggie sandwich as some of the ingredients included pecans, beets, and apple. Had a nice crunch to it. 4. Customer service - really polite and friendly. 5. Solid coffee - although they don't have syrups, my latte was good and didn't really need the extra flavoring. Bonus points - being open on BC Day. Even if it was shortened hours. Came here with my bf on a Friday afternoon. I know they have more than one location which Broadway would of been my go to option but this was the most convenient location for my bf to find parking within the area.This location was quite smaller than the one in Broadway but we still managed to find seats since it was a Friday. My bf ordered an iced mocha with soy milk while I had a regular drip coffee with a chocolate walnut cookie to share. My bf's iced mocha was pretty good because it wasn't too sweet. The chocolate walnut cookie was very good. I really liked how the chocolate chips were melting because it made the cookie very moist and soft. It was also very chocolaty and sweet but the walnuts helped cut the sweetness and provided texture (my bf didn't like it). The only thing I didn't like was the cookie was quite oily. It left this oily residue on the napkin and on my fingers which I didn't like. Overall, staff were super friendly and coffee was quite good. I would come back here but at there other locations. I also liked that they have sparkling water as an option to regular tap water. read more

Yikes, what did I miss? After hearing / reading such great things about Elysian, I was stoked to finally get the opportunity to check it out. Stepping in was like walking through a time-warp -- baristas that look like they came straight out of Portlandia, and a 90s 'coffee-is-all-the-rage' interior to match, I was a bit taken off guard. But I read Sassy magazine as a teenager, I get the riot grrrl thing, I can dig it. But what I couldn't get into was the attitude. So faced with a long ride today, I mapped my route ensuring there'd be enough time to for a to go americano from Elysian. I was in luck. Beautiful but pricey, and quite cramped. This little coffee spot is tucked away off Burrard and has an unassuming exterior. The inside is very pretty and inviting with lots of wood. It's a small place with only a few seats - there are a couple of booths and a couple of tables if you're lucky, but unfortunately when we were there most of those were taken up by single people with laptops. We ended up seating ourselves on their heavy wooden stools, which were a little unwieldy, but relatively comfortable. We ordered tea which at $3 a pop was pretty pricey, in my opinion. After all, it's a bag in hot water. My peppermint was very good and both teas came in a pot already brewing. The staff were very friendly and I really appreciated their asking if we wanted a glass of water right off the bat - usually I have to ask. I noticed that the guy asked everyone, which is a nice touch. The Elysian Room is cute, and I think my rating would be different if I'd been able to sit at a booth, but as it is unless I'm walking right by it again I probably won't go out of my way to return. Update on my review. The coffee here is good. The croissants are decent. The almond milk is grainy and not good. The staff I once thought of as just stiff or stoic, have since become rude. I literally got aggressively waved out of the shop like I was some hooligan neighborhood kid about to destroy a garden gnome, when I walked in and they were apparently closing. I can understand if you're closing and you haven't gotten around to taking in the sign or closing the door, you don't have to shoo me out like I'm a raccoon. Just say, "oh we're closing for today," like a person. Unnecessarily rude. Coffee is too expensive for me to make concessions in service. read more

New day. Different Location. Different Barista. Totally different experience. After having an unpleasantly bitter espresso the day before at the Broadway location, I sought some type of validation for the high number of stars that Elysian has received for both of it's locations. Contrary to other Yelp reports of churlish, aloof employees, I found the female barista very pleasant and informative, explaining to me the possible reasons for the mishap with the previous days drink. As I suspected, it more than likely was barista error. She, in turn, pulled a lovely espresso with a rich, full flavor and a nice chocolatey finish using the same type of bean that was used the previous day at Broadway. I'm as about impressed with Elysian Coffee as they were with me as a customer. Which is to say, not much. Too-cool-for-you staff made me a lukewarm mocha - with no whip either. Not even a hint of foam. $5 with tax, screw you tip jar. As I continued on down the street, off the beaten track where Elysian hides out, I did actually find myself enjoying the coffee. I wish I could make something this good so I could be a miserable git to everyone who asked for one, and maybe even have them come back for more. The Elysian Room is a great little spot. I've never been to it's sister cafe on Broadway, though, so I'm not judging it against that like some others. Anyway, I stop at this cafe a few times a week, as it's just around the corner from my place of employment, and I'd rather go here than wander further down West 4th into the yuppie abyss of (even more) overpriced everything. It's got lovely little booths to sip a morning cappuccino (and the coffee is really, really smooth. yum!), and I've never had a bad experience with the staff. Love the high ceilings too! I'm not sure if I'd go out of my way to come here, because it's not anything out-of-the-ordinary amazing, but it's a great little place and as long as I work in the area, they'll continue to have my patronage. read more

I am a sucker for a good cup of french press coffee and no one does it better than Elysian. However, the real silver lining is the wonderful Mixed-berry Scones. This place has a surprisingly nice bathroom. It's strange that that's the first thing that comes to mind when I think back on my visits to the Elysian. But I just remember being oddly impressed by the sleek sink and the fact that it's extremely well kept. Huh. Gold stars on that front! I've long been a big fan of Fifth Avenue Cinema. If it weren't for that theatre, I dare say I would never have found the Elysian. Nothing is more lovely then grabbing a nice cappuccino and seeing a good flick; it's a fine way to spend an afternoon. Up until recently, that's all the Elysian was to me. A quick stop on the way to something else. I never gave it much notice, which I suppose means their coffee is pretty darn good, but not truly memorable either way. However finding myself parked across the street with an hour to kill a week or so back, I decided to pop my head in the door and have a proper look around. One - it's lovely and quiet, without having the ominous "gallery" quiet of say, Coco et Olive. It's a comfortable room that's not trying too hard. I like that. Plus they have wifi. And few little tables outside. Though, I couldn't see the appeal of sitting out with all that traffic zooming by. But I could definitely see myself curling up here for work on any given day of the week. Maybe reward myself with a movie afterwards? Heck... i'm going to do that next week! So though I like the room, and drink the coffee - the beverages and food haven't jumped out enough at me to form a cheering squad one way or another. If you're in Vancouver, you should definitely visit this place. It is a small little coffee place with very few tables inside and outside. Lady luck was on my side that afternoon and I was able to find a table outside. It was just perfect to spend a nice chilly autumn afternoon outside, sipping on a nice cup of hot chai tea latte while admiring the beautiful leaves that were changing colors. I thought my hot chai tea latte was made just right. It was very smooth, light, and had the perfect amount of froth. I would definitely come back here the next time I'm in town! read more

One of the underrated coffee places, especially if you dig the contemporary setting and clientele. Lots of white decor. No suits here. Nice corner locale with lots of glass and natural light. Nothing better than working on the laptop by the window bar seating and enjoying their signature cheese scones with shallots inside. But they usually sell out of these by 11am... I am writing this as I sit at the bar in the Elysian Room, looking out onto the street after working until 3am last night. It's a perfect place to sit and read the paper and people watch. The interior is modern and understated, the staff is super knowledgeable and friendly; I always ask them for advice when I'm buying beans. Beans are their own, but are roasted at 49th Parallel. Free wireless is also available. The first thing I think about in the morning is their cappucino; the perfectly rich, velvety foam (with a heart swirled in) served over smooth, dark espresso in a cute little ceramic cup. They offer you a glass of sparkling water with your coffee and their baked goods are made in-house every morning. I am in love with their cranberry pecan muffin. I'm not usually into coffee shop baked goods. Muffins especially are often overmixed in commercial mixers, resulting in heavy, overbeaten, and rubbery behemoths of flour and sugar. Not these. So good. I have not been here while in a rush, but if you want a grande venti something something extra super hot with no whatevz, starbucks is down the street. read more

I have been to this small shop multiple times now. The coffee has been good and the americanos have treated me well. They have, however, been nothing to warrant the pompous attitude that I was treated with on my most recent visit. Seeking something a little more caffeinated then my usual coffee or americano, I apparently made the "mistake" of asking for a shot-in-the-dark. I was promptly told that no, they would not make what I had asked for on the grounds that I was asking them to "take two great things and turn them into one mediocre thing." I told the barista that this was simply his opinion. The response was that it was the opinion of the shop. This attitude of the staff being the experts and the customers being wrong if they have a differing opinion is absurd. Especially when it concerns something as subjective as taste. The customer service industry is about the customer, not the staff's ego. If you don't like the simple facts of your profession, find a new one. There is no reason to give Elysian my patronage when there are so many friendly, high quality alternatives in this city. read more
