During that time she was fed home made food and was really shown a lot of love by the staff. Last year Mom turned 105 years old. Yes, 105 is not a misprint. Maria put together a party for my mom which I will never forget. If you are looking for a truly superior environment for your loved one to spend their remaining years, this is as good as it gets.

The amazing views, even from her small, but very comfortable private room, were spectacular, and with gracious covered patios on three sides of the home, she spent a great deal of time out in the fresh air, watching all the birds that flocked to the many bird feeders, enjoying the vast vistas (you can see for 20 miles in every direction), and doing activities on the large outdoor table. Maria and her staff always celebrated birthdays and holidays with lots of fanfare, and my mom received personal attention, like getting her nails painted or makeup done. Visiting her there was always comfortable and inviting. We were very lucky to find such a loving and beautiful place for my mother, once we could no longer care for her ourselves.

My mom was elderly, immunocompromised, and recovering from surgery. During her stay, she developed an infection and was clearly becoming increasingly ill. Despite her worsening condition, we felt that her decline was not taken seriously enough and that there was a lack of urgency in getting her the medical attention she needed. When her surgeon identified an infection at her post-op appointment, my mom was sent back to rehab rather than immediately being transferred to the ER. She then had to wait more than a week for a CT scan to determine what was causing the infection. During that time, we watched her health deteriorate drastically. We repeatedly witnessed how sick and weak she was becoming, and as her family, we felt helpless. She needed someone to recognize how serious her condition was and advocate for her before she became even more critically ill. My mom ultimately passed away. There are no words to describe how heartbreaking it is to know that someone you love was so sick and vulnerable, yet you felt like the urgency of her condition wasn't recognized or acted upon quickly enough. We trusted this facility to care for my mom when she was at one of the most vulnerable points in her life, and we feel that she deserved a much higher level of attention, monitoring, communication, and advocacy. She was placed in a wheel chair to receive a CT scan the morning I came to pick her up. Couldn't open her eyes, barely communicate, and the nurse said nothing to me. Just went about things like nothing was wrong with my mom. Our family will live with this loss forever. We only wish that our concerns had been taken more seriously and that more had been done when there was still time.

Beyond that, the large outdoor patio space is park-like toward the back, and perfect for our weekly get-togethers, EVERY time we are there, more than one of the staff will help us, or stop by to say hello. Since Loucinda has been MCD the building has improved tremendously. My experience at Vista del Lago has truly been beautiful and inspiring. I first started off as a caregiver but almost immediately was promoted to Med-tech. Being med tech and lead has made me realize my dream is to become a nurse because I love helping others. I applaud Loucinda and Marie because I know that being on the floor is already so difficulty and I can only imagine what goes on behind the scenes. Not only do they both work hard to ensure staff and residents are taken care of but they continually help on the floor when needed. I appreciate Loucinda for allowing me to grow as much as I have and continue to do so. I have learned so many lessons and skills I will carry for years to come in next opportunities. Although some days are very difficult, most days are very rewarding. Working in a setting like this it's almost as if you have 50 grandmas and 50 grandpas and that is truly incredible but challenging at the same time. You can tell all staff in the building truly care for the residents with there whole heart. Working with dementia definitely comes with its difficulties mentally and physically but our directors ensure staff are always cared for. Whether that's leaving their offices open with open ears and arms or buying staff coffee, boba or meals.

The place is clean and there seems to be a lot of activities available. I've eaten at their dining hall a few times, and it's pretty good. Smaller portions. You can always order more food. It's not located in a sketchy part of Escondido, but it's also next to a busy street. Staff members seem to know everyone's name by heart.
