Had to come to the emergency room post tonsillectomy for dehydration (probably) and tachycardia - once I was registered (within 5 minutes), and then went up to talk about my symptoms, they WHISKED me in and within 1 minute I had blood drawn and was on an EKG machine. After they determined my tachycardia was just related to dehydration, the nurse and the doctor came and explained things to me and chatted. I had to wait for my labs to be returned for about an hour, but to be fair, it was a Sunday and the ER beds seemed pretty full! Nothing but good experiences with them! read more

From my first interaction with the reception area,to the person who wheeled me out the door, I received kind,warm,caring and professional attention. The past reputation of this hospital caused me to hesitate to utilize its services over the years. Recently my doctor, who is associate with hospital, felt I needed a procedure done and I acquiesced to have it at Emerson. Each and every nurse greeted me with professionalism and empathy. When I expressed my anxiety the anesthesiologist and pre-op nurses assuage my fears with their reassurance and gentle words. Each medical intervention the nurses needed to do they attended with explanation and skilled interpersonal interaction. Post surgical care also surpassed my expectations. They treated each patient as if each was the most important person there. I sensed these nurses enjoy their job and enjoy working with each other and the feeling trickles down to the patients and makes it a much more pleasant experience. They answered all my questions with smiles on their faces and kindness in their heart. When I called a few days later about a few concerns,I received the same amount of caring and friendliness, which impressed me. Called 8 minutes before arriving because my mother was having severe pain in her abdominal area and asked for a wheelchair to greet my car. When I got there 8 minutes later, there was no chair and someone proceeded to yell at me that I could not park by ER door. I told her I called ahead for wheelchair assistance and she said "if they aren't out here to meet me it's because they are inside working on patients". We waited a few moments and then drove away in search of another hospital that was interested in treating my mother. There was NO Place to park close enough for me to assist my mother inside. Lucky for us Nashoba Hospital was 21 minutes away and they are working on her now. They have an Ambulance door and a second one for patient drop offs and a wheelchair waiting for me WITHOUT having to call ahead. Skip Emerson and drive to Ayer! How Ridiculous!! read more

After a trip to ER... We got the bill for the typical co-payment $100. We paid it as soon as the bill came, not cash, with a credit card (meaning, there is a record in both our account and their account, basic accounting)... Then, we started getting these letters that we never paid. My wife had to go above and beyond to prove that we paid already. When everything seem resolved, we got a collections notice a few months later saying we owe the $100. And now, we need to fight with a collection agency about the charged. This is beyond ridiculous. Seriously disappointed with their billing department. I paid my bill for my insurance deductible, in full. Confirmed with the billing department that my bill was paid. Despite my billing account showing that this bill was paid in full, and despite the fact that I confirmed with the billings department that it was paid, my account was still SENT TO A COLLECTIONS AGENCY. So now, I have to deal with a collections agency over an issue that is NOT my fault. They had one job and completely and utterly failed to do it. read more

When I was growing up, there were two hospitals you could go to-- Nashoba Deaconess, which seemed to be a glorified veterinary clinic, or Emerson-- the "good hospital". With that in mind, when I needed emergency care on a Saturday, I made sure to go to Emerson. I showed up with strange symptoms-- weakness, confusion, difficulty speaking and walking, agitation, extremely high blood pressure and heart palpitations. I was registered and triaged quickly, then sent to the waiting room to wait. I was then called back to registration with questions about my insurance. During the time between when I was triaged and when I went back to registration, my condition got worse-- I was more agitated and confused than before, to the point that I couldn't recall my name, address, or the year. I was then asked to wait in the waiting room for over an hour. Two hours after first getting to the hospital, I finally saw a nurse. She sent the doctor, who asked a few questions that, due to my illness, I was unable to answer, performed a cursory exam, and left the room within three minutes. In briefly reviewing my medical history (which he insisted I deliver myself, despite my MedicAlert membership and my inability to remember my own name), he chose to fixate on a prior diagnosis unrelated to what I had presented with that day. This concern was addressed via the nurse, who said she would speak to the doctor. Eventually the nurse let us know that the doctor thought I was dehydrated-- implausible, given that my water intake is over half a gallon per day-- and that I would be released as soon as my IV was finished. Given the set of symptoms and my medical history, we were left with the impression that my case was, at best, mismanaged and asked to speak to the doctor again, who again dismissed my concerns. Over the next week, when my symptoms did not improve (in fact, only getting worse), I was given a handful of potential diagnoses ranging from stroke to allergic reaction before finally being told I had had a potentially life-threatening, easily diagnosed condition related to medication that I was taking, that we had told the doctor about, and that every ER doctor SHOULD know about. To add insult to injury, they failed to bill my insurance, although I had provided the information, and they stuck me with a bill for nearly $5k. I have told their billing department multiple times to contact the insurance company but they turned the account over to collections and they continue to harass me for the hospital's mistake. read more

I wish I could give Emerson a better rating--the majority of the employees and staff who work there are kind and wonderful--but I'm giving it low rating because of the dangerous care I received from one attending physician back in November, "care" being used loosely here. My experience was similar to the one the lady with the stroke had. I was brought to Emerson in an ambulance because after weeks of increasing lower back pain, one morning I woke up and could not get out of bed. Every time I moved, I almost passed out from excruciating pain radiating out from my lower back down into my left leg. In the ER, doctors took my patient history, vitals, and x-rays, and told me they suspected a herniated disc. Because I couldn't walk or move, they admitted me for pain management. The first attending physician also concurred that it looked like a herniated disc, so he started me on heavy duty meds to alleviate the pain. He was only on for a few more hours ... Enter the Incompetent Doctor. She came in the next morning, asking me how my pulled muscle/sprain was. Pulled muscle? Sprain? I again told her what happened, that this pain had been developing for weeks and only the day before it got so bad I couldn't move. She wouldn't listen. She was seemingly focused on something I had told a doctor upon arriving, that I had stood on a ladder the day before and felt pain when I stepped off. I was like, "Yeah, that was one of the times. I also felt pain on my bike, when I climbed the stairs, etc., etc." but she was deaf to all that. She INSISTED I must have hurt my back on the ladder. A young PT came in to evaluate me the next day. He, too, was under the impression (after talking to doctor) that I had a sprain. He told me, "OK, get out of bed." That first day, I couldn't move, never mind get out of bed so it dawned on him there might be more than a sprain. Meanwhile because I couldn't move, I was stuck in bed. What are doctors supposed to do when a patient can't move? Put preventative measures in place so that the patient doesn't develop DVT, or blood clots. Did this doctor do that? No. Because again, I only had "a sprain." Finally, the day I'm to be released. I was horrified when the doctor cheerfully announced she was discharging me with no follow-up referral to my own doctor OR physical therapy. When I questioned her on that, she snapped at me that a back sprain would mend on its own. However, the hospital had a protocol that a PT had to check me over before I was discharged. It was a different PT from the one who saw me the day before. When SHE examined me and saw the signs of nerve damage, I could see by the look on her face she was doubting the doctor's diagnosis. She even told me the doctor had told her I had a back sprain and no further treatment would be necessary. The PT agreed I had something more going on, and bless her, she refused to sign my release papers until the doctor wrote up orders for further PT care. The doctor became even more irate and actually pitched a fit in front of me and a couple of nurses (one who rolled his eyes at me as if to intimate, "It's business as usual around here"). Fast forward several days later. Remember the lack of preventative DVT measures? I have a visiting PT in my home who's helping me learn how to get out of bed again when I tell her I have pain in my calf. She takes one look, calls the hospital, then asks me how soon we can get there. They rush me into radiology where the radiologist (extremely nice lady) tells me I'm the first patient she's seen that day with DVT ... my calf is almost completely blocked with clots! If it weren't for the PT who came to my house -- the same PT that damn attending physician didn't want me to see -- I'd be a dead woman. Three months of blood thinners, not to mention self-injected blood thinning shots into my stomach, and I was back to normal. Subsequent visits to specialists gave me a diagnosis of a significantly herniated disc, which, knock wood, I've been able to treat through pain medication, PT, exercise, and lifestyle changes. I'm left with some permanent nerve damage in my left thigh, but I can live with that. If I ever get admitted to Emerson again, I'll insist they follow protocol on preventative DVT measures. And if that attending physician is on my floor again, I'll drag myself out of bed to get away from her if I have to because I'm convinced her "care" could be lethal. read more

My experience with Emerson Hospital has been hit or miss over the course of several years - starting with the care that my father received as a cancer patient. I can say that the ER department misdiagnosed the HUGE tumor on my father's neck as a "sinus infection" and sent him home back in 1999. We immediately took him to another hospital where they looked at the massive lump and diagnosed it appropriately. The ER tends to rush patients in and out as fast as they can. My second experience was directly with my care. During one of my foot surgeries ( I am under 30 years old) a very rude nurse entered the prep room and yanked off my hospital gown revealing my breasts to the medical personal in the room. I instantly pulled it back and the nurse proceeded to scold me for covering myself and told me that I would have to expose my breast in order to do a EKG. During my post op with my surgeon, I asked him why he ordered an EKG on me and he informed me that he never ordered the EKG and that one wouldn't normally be done on someone under the age of 50. Not only was the WRONG procedure preformed on me, but the nurse failed to check her attitude and bed-side manners at the curtain. My third experience has had to do with billing. After making several months of payments on a large "patient balance" my account was sent to the collections agency. I called Emerson Hospital where the customer service rep. told me it was my fault for being delinquent on my bill. I informed him that I had been paying $50 a month and my bill was down to only owing $100.00. The customer service rep REFUSED to hear why their lack of communication failed to inform me that paying monthly did not count as actually paying. I was unaware that I was required to call and set up payment plans on the bill. No where did the bill state that I was supposed to do this. Up to this point I was making monthly payments which the customer service rep said was not good enough. I had to ask him to stop interrupting me while I was explaining. He refused and commandeered the conversation repeating that it was my fault. I will not go back to Emerson Hospital. I would not recommend the day-surgery team if my life depended on it. Horrible! Waited 3 hours in er without any notice ahead of time about the wait. When asked they said twenty minutes top. Staff was rude and unprofessional. Waiting room was cramped and uncomfortably warm. Never go here!!! Ever!! My doctor went out of town and never left an emergency contact do I had to come here to see a doctor that took literally 3 minutes to get the prescription that I knew I needed before even seeing the doctor. Medically, no complaints. I was hospitalized there for a week and received excellent medical and nursing care. Administratively, it's a totally different story. I received very bad information concerning my insurance coverage from hospital staff, which added about $1000.00 to my bill. Also, be aware that their billing department is basically incompetent. Take extraordinary care in monitoring bills and whether your payments are being correctly recorded. From a business oint of view, they are not dishonest in any way shape or form-just incapable and disinterested in improving their systems. read more

I have had two horrible experiences at the Emerson ER. Both have been emergencies (I don't go to the ER unless they are). Parking is a serious issue -- the last time, I was driving my seriously ill toddler and had to park at the far side of the visitor parking lot and walk up the hill carrying her. I can't imagine that many people are driving themselves to the ER, and people accompanying patients can move their cars to the visitor lot, can't they? Anyway, this place is obviously severely short staffed. My latest visit took the cake. Understanding that I needed to get to the nearest ER to make sure my daughter was stable, I stopped at Emerson. She was bleeding after a tonsillectomy (a rare, but extremely serious complication -- especially in a 2 year old). We were registered, then sent to wait in the waiting area for 20 minutes before the triage nurse took a look at her. She's two and came in with a mouth full of blood and we waited 20 minutes!!! The triage nurse took her vitals, asked what had happened, looked in her throat and sent us back out to the waiting area for another 15 minutes. We were finally taken to a room by a "technician" who said he "helps the nurses." He never asked us what the issue was, a nurse never came in to talk with us. The doctor finally came in after another 20 minutes. After I explained why we were there, he said "she probably just popped a stitch." Ummm, okay, but they DID NOT use stitches for her surgery. He looked and didn't see any active bleeding and said he was going to send us home. I insisted he call her ENT and gave him her name and number. He came back in after just a few minutes and explained that we needed to head to the Children's ER and that my daughter's ENT wanted her observed for 24 hours. EXACTLY! We finally saw the nurse when we were discharged. Headed to Children's and were immediately taken to a room in the ER there. read more

I imagine it can't be easy working in the Health Care field with all the obstacles put up by the the insurance companies but if you dont want to work with peole, change your field. I spoke with the Director of Behavioral Health, Tony Piro, he was a nightmare! He was aggresive from the start of the call to the end of the call. He wasn't willing to listen to what I said and at one point called me a liar. I was advised to call him per the insurance provider and he was just down right rude. He wasn't even willing to give options, it was his way or nothing. I'm shocked this man is the Director of Behavioral Health because he couldnt even keep his composure on a phone call. read more

First of all the ER facilities are in need of repair. Disgusting. Today 12/3 my 94 year old dad sat in the ER on a cot in the isle way where all ambulance units bring their patients through. It was cold. My dad sat in that hallway for 8plus hours as others walking In were provided with private rooms. He's incontinent so had to use portable urinal in the middle of everyone all day. They didn't care. They gave me a chair next to my dad and all the nurses in their pit so to speak and for hours I listen to them talk about everything including in general "men's gunk" this place is ridiculous. They need to focus on health care. When my brother came in to see how dad was we were asked to leave the area as it was where emergency patients were coming in. So disrespectful to people concerned for a dads care but focused on the drama of their personal lives. I was born at Emerson 56 years ago. Luckily I don't use that hospital. I use Milford Hospital where the ER is new, state of the art, as are the medical staff. An Affluent community like concord should have better care.!!!! read more

So personally I don't recommend this hospital. We checked in a 7am for my dads surgery and each and every nurse that i have spoken with today has been rude and non helpful except for one and her name is Joanne . Nobody has answered any of my questions I had today besides Joanne who was only my dads nurse for pre op . His post op nurse was rude and had no answers for me about what was going on . She was rude in the recovery room and escorted me out without answering anything i had asked her and proceeded to tell me I can see him in an hour and 1/2 with still no answers . I don't appreciate how me and my dads fiancé were treated today when all we were trying to do was figure out what was going on considering my dads life was in your hands . To give this hospital a single star would be to too dramatically discredit the full staff, people like the surgeon we worked with at Emerson. However, if I could rate the emergency room staff and administrators alone, I would without hesitation offer one (1) star. Like Alan G., my wife eventually received proper medical treatment (emergency surgery for gall bladder) but not until after two (2) trips to the hospital in shrieking pain/sick and two (2) entries to the emergency room and initial missed diagnosis, prolonging by approximately 24 hours the pain and suffering. But believe you me, all the bills (including BOTH emergency room entrances!) were completed to the fullest with every possible cost. Classic. This review is not about the medical care at Emerson Hospital but about a negative experience I recently had while being seen at the ER. I have lived in Concord for over 35 years so am very familiar with Emerson - it is a wonderful medical facility. However, as I was waiting in one of the ER treatment rooms for the Doctor or Nurse to return, and while I was wearing a hospital "johnnie", and had an IV tube in my arm (and my wife was in the room with me), a female employee suddenly entered the room and promptly and forcefully announced that she was there to collect my $150 co-pay - while I was in the middle of being treated. I refused to pay the co-pay at that time. My wife and I found this to be unprofessional, inappropriate, offensive and outrageous. And then I look over and there is a dead cock roach on the floor. -- I look again is this DT's/ NOPE I scope it up with there Emersopn guide to compassionate care -- and this is the best part .. The Head RN on the floor says. No problem it's been long dead. And I was like Umm no not really why are "long dead" cock roaches still in my room? The staff didn't seem to have an answer for that but they also didn't seem surprised... My buddy that retrieved me said hey man I sleep on the ground all the time. Our preemie twins spent 3 weeks in the NICU and received wonderful care. My wife was allowed to stay in a nicely appointed maternity room (as long as it wasn't required) and could get room service. Can't say enough good things about the nursing staff and physicians. They made us feel very comfortable during this extremely trying time. I have been a patient myself at Emerson twice. Once in the ED after an automobile crash and once as an inpatient for abdominal surgery. Both times I received excellent care. Although this is a community hospital, they have state-of-the-art equipment and place patient care as their highest priority. The hospital does have it's limitations, you probably don't want to get treatment for rare conditions or complicated surgery/neurosurgery here, there are top notch tertiary care hospitals down route 2 for that. Any hospital will have patients who have a poor outcome or experience for various reasons, and EDs generally have more than their share of disatisfied customers that's simply the nature of the beast. In the end, if you are looking for a really good community hospital which provides excellent care, Emerson is hard to beat. read more

Waited over an hour for a scheduled ultrasound. Plus they messed up the time for the appointment.

I see there are a lot of complaints about their billing practices. Here is another one. They billed under the wrong BCBS number and, surprise, the claim was denied. They sent me a bill for several thousand dollars. I checked with BCBS, who confirmed that no claim had been filed. I called Emerson and was helped by a nice person from patient accounts, and we figured it out. They agreed to bill under the correct number. Three months later I was still receiving increasingly threatening letters, and five months later I received a letter from a collection agency. I never did receive a corrected bill from Emerson. During this time I had spoken to Emerson several times and had been reassured there was no problem. Even now, they do not apologize but say only that it takes time (5 months?) to correct their mistakes read more

I was rushed by ambulance here after a motorcycle accident. I was reporting a headache but they never checked for a head injury. They gave me a prescription for my pain but ended up putting it in my husband's file and neglecting to tell me they prescribed me medication. They also neglected to inform my husband that if he did not get surgery on the bones he had broken (reported that there were only two broken bones but the surgeon at a different hospital found 3), there would be serious damage and he would not be able to use his hand any longer. read more

I recently had a colonoscopy at Emerson Hospital and it was so well handled. The nursing staff was fabulous! The intake person was fabulous. My doctor, Maureen Day MD was wonderful. No one want to have this procedure but at Emerson Hospital it was a great experience and far better than my last experience at the famed MGH. I'll take Emerson any day for this kind of care. Ok maybe I was lucky. It was Saturday morning and not a lot of traffic, but I've been here before when they've been busy and my experience has been consistently outstanding. They were fast, efficient and professional with great bedside manner. I had vital signs evaluation, doctor consult, x-rays, diagnosis and prescription in under 90 minutes. But the efficiency was not the half of it. Everyone knew so well what they were doing. Nurse was great taking vitals quickly. Doctor arrived in a timely way, thoroughly discussed the situation, recommended x-rays and came in and out as needed. x-ray tech perfect. Cannot recommend this crew highly enough...especially compared to some of the other options near me (I live in Lexington.) read more

Zero Stars! Emerson knows nothing about the brain and neuropsychiatric research with brain tumors or the latest testing equipment to detect them. In 2003, they knew nothing about bacterial meningitis and deadly sepsis either until it was brought to their attention. Christine Schuster sweeps this medical malpractice with a failure to diagnose, pharmacy errors, misdiagnosis, under the proverbial rug waiting for a lawsuit or licensing complaints on her 1-star doctors. A breast surgeon keeps feral cats in her office. Ridiculous that this is allowed when there are allergies and disease. An orthopedic surgeon watched me in seizures after surgery and allowed me to drive from his office while his staff was horrified which could have caused an accident. All this and more at a suburban hospital that won't admit from their ER with UTI, URI, pneumonia, dehydration, malnutrition, head trauma according to the police and no social worker assigned about domestic violence. The allergist covered up the chopped up Keppra drug in his exam room. Emerson deserves to lose any standing with the AMA. Keep driving and go to another medical facility and learn from just one patient. read more

I delivered my first baby at Clough Birthing Center at Emerson last September. My husband and I had the most wonderful experience. The nurses who tended to us and our baby with care and affection made the whole experience as calm and smooth as could it could be. They work so well with my doctors from my obgyn and helped me order my breast pump from a supply company to be brought over before I left. The amenities are also great, the food so so but expected at a hospital. Will definitely recommend to family and friends!!! read more

It really sucked that I had to pay for parking for the 2 days I came in for my scan. It would've been nice if they validated my parking ticket at least since I had to take precious time off from work to be there. The first technician I encountered copped an attitude -- somebody pooed in her cherios since it was about 7:30am. The second day I came in for a follow up there was a different technician who was super sweet. The care itself wasn't bad. I didn't have to wait long in the waiting room and I got what I needed done in not a whole lot of time so I'll give them that. Just the other variables keep me from giving 5 stars. read more

First thing I will say, all hospitals seem to get a lot of bad yelp reviews as you might expect. I would suggest looking at hospitalsafetygrade.org for objective grades with lots of detail. In Boston Emerson Hospital gets some of the highest marks, straight A's. With all that said, I have been going to emerson for years. My wife delivered 3 kids here that are all older than 20 now, and we both have our PCP here. I have been hospitalized with a serious issue and looked like a stroke at the time. They took me in immediately in emergency and did a good job identifying a different issue. My wife had a kidney issue and was taken care of promptly and effectively. I recently went into emergency for a non life threatening issue and was seen promptly. I think the time to get into emergency obviously varies based on the folks waiting in the waiting room at the time. There were only several folks. Overall this place is a good solid local hospital. I have spent a good amount of time with geriatric parents in hospital care and you couldn't get me to anywhere near Mass general, that filthy mess of a hospital. They made 2 major mistakes on my family members there. It's a mill. Emerson at least cares and follows up after you are there in the ER. I noticed someone actually responds to the reviews here from the hospital. Not on the reviews from the other big mills in Boston! Would I want Cardiac surgery here, no. I would want all my other regular lesser hospital needs here for sure. They care read more

Came to the emergency room at 5pm. Had a chest x-ray and EKG by 6pm. Waited for two hours and the nurse said that the doctor wanted to draw blood for test for my heart. When I confronted the nurse about why are they doing a blood test now he left the room. And then returned 5 to 10 minutes later and said oh it was a mistake the doctor meant to order it for another patient and accidentally ordered it for me! Then the doctor came in to finally see by told that I have slight case of pneumonia. Need three new prescriptions and told can go home. Waited another 90 minutes to get discharge paperwork. Nursing staff doesn't responds to call buttons until after five minutes. Had to tell nurse that I am leaving. The nurse proceeded to say that they would mail the prescriptions that the doctor told me that they would call into my pharmacy. Then the nurse told me that I only had bronchitis when the doctor told me that I had a touch of pneumonia. Plus the room that I was in was filthy. The floor hadn't been washed and there was wrist band from the previous patient on the floor. If you value your life, do not go to the Emerson Hospital emergency room!!!!!!! read more

The staff that I've met and had experience with were all great, both in their competence and level of concern/bedside manner. I went to the ER in Emerson Hospital with a broken back. I lay strapped on a gurney for over an hour. When they wheeled me into x-ray they told me I had to position myself onto the x-ray table - they "couldn't" help me. Obviously moving without assistance with a broken back was excruciating to the point of tears. They offered me a kleenex for my tears - how kind of them! I wouldn't take a dog to Emerson! Emerson Hospital is an amazing place. I have had several recent surgeries here for breast cancer and the preop and postop nurses are incredible. They are detail oriented, kind, are great at what they do and really easy to talk to! The surgeons and doctors are also fantastic. Dr Costas is very talented and makes you feel so comfortable. He has got to be one of the best plastic surgeons around. I am so grateful for this hospital and its staff!! read more

I am unsure how Emerson Hospital received such negative reviews as I've had nothing but positive experiences here (over a period of a year) and I've made more than 10 visits up to this point. Everyone here is nice, and if you are like me (kind of aloof and confused) you always get someone to direct you to your final destination. I am giving this 5 stars based on my visits to the ER, AFA OB, and the Clough Surgical. You get professionals who will work hard on your issues, and offer the best guidance a person could possibly get. I transferred (due to a move) from a renowned hospital from Boston to the outskirts of Boston, and I am very happy to be here because of several reasons: 1) parking is cheaper than in Boston, 2) home town feeling, 3) altruistic and kindness towards everyone equally (no feeling of being treated differently because I am a minority, and 4) I don't have to drive an hour away to deal with traffic in Boston. The phone call thing that some ppl. complain about happened to me, however I made one phone call and they changed the whole thing around... they just need to know whether it was acceptable to call you or not... a simply call to administration and then you will be all set. read more

Sad to see all these awful reviews. Maybe we were lucky, but we took our 3 year old here with a broken arm and were treated with great compassion and care by all staff and Drs. People took the time to explain things to us and were very attentive. I've also had an extended stay with my daughter in the nicu and only have glowing reviews of our time there. read more

Speaking of the Birthing Center only, we were very satisfied with Emerson Hospital. Every visit we made was pleasant and the staff was very nice and helpful. We visited three times for non-stress tests and every visit was a good one. When it came to delivering our baby, the staff was extremely knowledgeable and helpful. The facilities provided the options we needed to facilitate the delivery of our baby. The maternity ward was even better. The staff there were above reproach! The room was clean and they were very supportive of allowing my husband to remain with me throughout my stay. We really liked the nurses that attended me. Our baby was well taken care of and the security features they have in place allowed us to feel safe when she was taken out of the room. Over the last several years I have had to take a family member of mine there for 2 issues. The first time it was because this family member had a head in jury which resulted in a concussion and was showing signs of confusion and was repeating themselves within a span of 5mins. One top of this my family member has a history of drug abuse and they wanted Emerson to admit her so she could be put in a rehab. I took them to the hospital. They did nothing for them. She couldn't tell when they sustained the head injury or even remember what time it was. On top of doing NOTHING for their concussion they told them that because they weren't high or in detox that there was nothing they could do to help get into a program to help her treat her drug addiction. Basically go get high come back and we can help you. The next day this person in my family member overdosed in the back of my grandmother's car on the way to Newton-Wellesley Hospital. Luckily they survived no thanks to Emerson and they were able to get the treatment they needed for both their head injury and drug abuse Fast forward to September 2014, this same family member is sick so we went to Emerson because that's where this family member wanted to go and it is the closest hospital. They had red blotchy spots all over them, hives, sores on the inside of their mouth and swollen checks. First visit: it looks like a reaction to something. Keep taking the meds you're on and add Benadryl for the hives the doctor says. Ok fine. But the next day this relative was worse so we went back. Second Visit: it could be foot and mouth disease. OK fine what can be done? Nothing; gives them comfort meds and sends us on our way. The next day my relatives face is even more swollen and eating is almost impossible. So off we go again to the hospital Third visit: At this point my relative and I are beyond frustrated because nothing is helping and their condition is only getting worse. After 2 hours in the ER at Emerson this time they briefly mentioned something about Strawberry tongue which was never addressed because they then told my relative that if all they wanted was Pain medications then they could leave. I'm sorry what?!?!? All we wanted was to know what was wrong and how to go about treating whatever was going on in with my relative. I eventually ended at the Beth Israel Deaconess in Boston, where someone listened to my relative and didn't accuse them of trying to get high and figured out that she was having a sever reaction to one of the medications she was taking. I strongly encouraged those needing medical attention to go to a different hospital. This hospital will only hear what they want to hear and what will get you out the door the fastest instead of actually treating what's wrong with you. read more

This is the absolute worst hospital I've ever encountered. I have instructed anyone close to us to do all possible before ever taking myself or my children here ever. it's in my children's records at school that they are NOT to go to emerson unless it's beyond their control. First visit was myself and 2 year old son when i was 37 weeks pregnant. i told them several times i thought we had the flu but because we both had been vaccinated they kept blowing it off. They discharged my son and after hours they finally swabbed me. The doc came in baffled that i had type a influenza. good thing they didn't listen to me and sent my two year old son home with the flu. my next experience was when my dad was visiting from florida and went to the ER as he had fallen ill and lost 10lbs in a week. they did an X-ray and he waited for a bit. a doc finally came in and TOLD HIM HE HAD PANCREATIC CANCER. no further testings, no "we think" but an insistent you have cancer and put him in touch with a follow up doctor. after 4 days of waiting for his follow up appt the doctor was shocked he was given that diagnosis. glad they don't do their due diligence before giving someone a death sentence. last but finally not least, i went in this year for abdominal pain. after an ultrasound they told me i had an ovarian cyst. when i asked what type/kind etc they had no answers. they told me they'd send my scans to my doc....and they didn't. between my doc office and myself we had too make several calls to get my records back to my doctor....i ended up having to do another ultrasound to get appropriate answers. the worst part is they entered my insurance information wrong. i called the first time i received a notice in the mail and the super nice woman realized that my name was wrong in the system and said she'd take care of it. then another notice a few weeks later.....i call again.....same conversation "but we'll take care of it"......GROUNDHOG DAY. i have now had 5 phone calls and today for the first time someone tells me i need to fax a copy of my license in order to update this properly....the notice in my hand is the final before collections. now i'm going to deal with this headache because of yet another mistake by emerson. why wasn't i told this the first time? DO NOT GO HERE. I am totally shocked that a hospital this close to boston could be so careless on so many levels. read more
